This chain is the ONLYYYY place I'll get tteokbokki from. I don't know what magic they use in their sauce base but it's perfectly spicy and savory with just the slightest bit of sugar. The other places are half sugar/half gochujang and it gets so cloyingly sweet and thick I hate it. But I never have that problem here and it's soo soooooo good!! Here you choose your choice of rice cake + spice level and then add whatever toppings you'd like. It already comes preset with a good level of rice cakes, fish cakes, veggies and a boiled egg. I added sausage (+$3.50 for 6 pieces) and jjolmyun noodles (+$3.50). After adding those my total came to $22 for the tteokbokki (base price $15). The sausage I'd get again but the noodles were ehhh. They got soggy kind of quickly so I'll just get regular ramen next time. For type of rice cake just trust me and get the garaetteok!! It's made with rice flour and is the BEEEEST TEXTURE! Plus the name in Korean translates to "grandmas garae tteokbokki" so you have to order what they're known for! It comes in 3 long strips and they have scissors on the side for you to cut it up yourself. The texture is so perfectly soft and chewy. I cannot explain. It is simply the best like frozen regular rice/wheat ones cannot compete. For spice level, level 2 (out of 3) was perfect where it's slightly spicy but it builds the more you eat it and ends at a good medium-high. By the end I was like oooooh it's kicking in. But any less would be too mild and I feel like level 3 it'd be too spicy for me to finish it all and have a good time. Rice balls ($6)-- Comes in a big bowl with a pair of gloves and you mix and make your own rice balls. It's good! Good change of pace from the tteokbokki and helps with spice. It's not the mayo kind, just sesame oil and soy sauce or something but it's still good!! Gimmari ($4.50)-- Kind of tempura, glass noodle wrapped in seaweed. It's good but.... there's only 4 little pieces ????? It's so expensive. Like baby pieces. In comparison that whole rice ball bowl was only $6 so I just can't justify this pricing. Overall the flavor is AMAZINGGGG and price really isn't that bad if you order tteokbokki + rice balls. The fried stuff is expensive. I went on a Saturday the place was full of Korean families so it's like yk.. good sign that the place is good and authentic. They also sell fried chicken but I didn't order any. We got the garea tteok and it was soft, chewy, and felt fresh. Spice level 2 was my perfect; they said it's a bit spicier than shin ramen. The fries were solid, freshly fried per order. The negatives: the chicken. We got the original and spicy soy but they were both disappointing. The spicy soy was literally drenched in this syrup "sauce". It was disgustingly sweet. A little spicy as advertised but holy it was basically candied wings. A dessert wing if you will. The original fried wing was better but a little bland. I ordered a variety of dishes... but overall, the food was alright. The first dish that came out was the fried octopus but that was already bad. As you can see in the photo, it was overly fried and did not look like what the menu photo shows. Tbh it was too hard to finish it. The soondae was a bit dry. It was better when you dipped it in the tteokbokki sauce. The only thing good out of all the dishes was the tteokbokki. Server recommended garaedduk which was a great choice. We ordered their plain wings (no sauce/powder seasoning) with a side of soy garlic sauce and the rose tteokbbokgi. I personally enjoyed the ttteokbbokgi as it came in a little variety of other toppings (we did not add additional toppings) and ordered in the lowest spice level and I thought it was just right for my husband who cannot eat spicy food. The wings on the other end was a let down for both of us. You can't help but compare to other korean chicken places - I get it, it's a lot of competition. However the wings itself were rather plain and at times slightly dry. I usually enjoy fried chicken plain because it's good on its own, but this place was not it. I think the lack of seasoning was on purpose because of the options to be tossed in sauce or seasoned powder. We had to dunk the wings in the soy garlic sauce that we had ordered to get the seasoning right. Everything feels super clean and new, with TVs playing K-pop--giving off the vibe of a cute Korean bar/finger-food spot. We started with the mayak kimbap, which came with a horseradish dipping sauce. Each piece was rolled with veggies, fishcake, and radish, then lightly glazed with sesame oil for a deep, savory flavor. Definitely an appetizer rather than a full meal, especially since the next dish takes a bit longer. About 15 minutes later, the rose tteokbokki with garae tteok came out--and the sauce was amazing. Unlike some places where rose sauce can be overly creamy, this one was bold, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. I noticed what looked like minced meat or bacon mixed in, which probably gives the sauce that extra richness. On the other hand, my husband didn't care too much for the sauce because he not a fan of rose sauces in general. The dish came with one egg and some veggies, and we added extra of both. Even though we ordered extra veggies, the amount still felt pretty sparse--maybe because the plate itself was quite large, making it look emptier than expected. My husband and I decided to go boneless, and got 3-order with sauce mixed, soy garlic and honey butter. Honey butter surprised us the most! Dry rub and was really easy to keep eating. Also liked the sauce mixed with its spicy kick. Soy garlic was good initially but was hard to eat a lot of. I was underwhelmed by the lack of crunch. I've loved the food we did takeout, but eating in was disappointing.. :( There were four servers, but only one was actually taking orders, cleaning up, etc. The other three were mostly chatting or focused on to-go orders. So hard to get their attentions! We ordered tempura and tteokbokki, and the tempura came out first... then we waited about 15 minutes for the tteokbokki. Sad looking tempura getting cold by the time tteokbokki was ready. Wonder they not know koreans love dipping tempura in the tteokbokki sauce! We ended up ordering another tempura... which was sad yakimandu ..just a little glass noodle inside; picture attached. Chicken wings were sold out on the weekend around 4 pm.
