Popular breakfast spot on the weekends but we were lucky to get a table for 6 immediately. It is a small place unless the back patio is open. Also you seat yourself when you come in. Our server was friendly and once we ordered we didn't wait long for our food. I got the avocado toast (with perfectly cooked eggs atop each piece) which was good but I didn't care for the potatoes or turkey sausage. I should've ordered regular sausage. Darn. My friends loved the slinger. And cheesy grits were very tasty too. One of nice things about the breakfast here is all the options for toast and sides. But you have to make sure you specify which side you want or they choose for you. Good experience overall but not sure I would rush back there. Breakfast is a pretty easy meal to find. Pros: -Good prices -Great breakfast -Great food in general (for dine in) -Nice outdoor patio (now with a heated section for winter) -Friendly, long term staff. -Open early in the day -Live music (also see cons) Cons: -Service is variable; sometimes it's excellent, sometimes no one knows who has your table and you sit for a while, sometimes the kitchen is crazy backed up. -The live music inside is so loud you can't hear yourself. Don't come here to have conversation on ac Saturday evening. -Smallish indoor seating area. -Takeout has become less than desirable. It's hard to get someone to answer the phone. Last take out we got, we sat at the bar waiting for an hour and were forgotten about even after asking if it's done. It was handed to us in a bag sideways. It was cold, and everything had slid to one side of the container, making a mess. The take out used to be more organized. I know it seems like more cons than pros here, but I don't want that to dissuade you from checking it out. It's a place we put in our Airbnb recommendations. Hubby and I were doing a historical walking tour of Soulard and stopped in for breakfast on a Saturday around 11am. And, we were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and everything on the menu was so affordably priced. I ordered the vegetarian 3-egg omelet filled with spinach and Swiss cheese and Irish potatoes and rye toast as my sides. So far Nurse Ratchet is giving off very stern vibes, not an emotion showing. I order my burger, fries and root beer. my order arrives missing one very key ingredient, "mayo". I'll let it slide. The fries are way over fried, beyond crispy and the burger was a burger. The bun was superb, I finish, sit around for too long waiting for Nurse Ratchet to catch me looking her way, finally I go to her, pay, tip and leave unsatisfied. I had not been in here in years but was here on a recent weeknight to meet a friend for an early dinner. The server sold me on their soup special, German Wedding Soup. It was like Italian Wedding Soup but with bratwurst instead of meatballs. I was intrigued. I ordered that and the 1/2 order of chicken tenders and fries which turned out to be a $5 happy hour special. Everything got delivered at once. I enjoyed the soup but felt like it was overly salty. The chicken tenders are hand breaded with a tempura batter and tossed in corn flakes. I really liked the texture of the batter and these would have been great except they had no seasoning at all. The fries were a basic crinkle cut but fried crispy the way I like them. The honey mustard was a good one. My dinner date enjoyed the same soup and a burger. Service was friendly but definitely different than the regulars at the bar were getting. Excellent value on the happy hour menu! Who knew Hammerstones had breakfast? I didn't either, until my daughter suggested it. We sat down right upon arrival at a bar table and were quickly greeted by our waitress. I ordered a bloody Mary and thought it was perfectly seasoned and flavorful, not too spicy, but just the right flavor. Everyone got something different, so we could try a variety of items. Breakfast pizza, French toast, two egg breakfast, and the chicken and biscuit sandwich. The inside was not too loud for how crowded it was, but they also had patio seating available. I could have hung out there all day on the patio, but my teenage kids had other plans for the day, lol! A 3.7 overall rating is an injustice for this place. Just visiting STL and wanted to check out the neighborhood. Asked someone walking a dog where was a good place to grab a beer and food. Hammerstones was the place. 3 beers, a martini and a Cubano and a French dip. The Cubano was excellent and the FD was a pc of steak on a roll (never seen that). Both tasted great. So reasonable from a price standpoint it wasn't funny. read more

The owners are super fabulous! I came for an event during the 12 hours of charity and the owners are on site and really encouraging customers to donate to charity without pressuring them. The staff was so friendly and outgoing. I never had an empty drink in my hand. The bartenders are constantly checking on us, as well as other staff members coming around. It was definitely different than what I'm used to, usually you have to get the bartenders attention to be able to get a drink this is not the case here everyone was very Attentive. The band was great they played every music, and I will definitely be returning to this far in the future! The pricing was very reasonable. Super weird interaction as I went to open the door for my girlfriend the guy stands up and away from a group he was socializing with to physically stop me from going in. Ordered the fried green tomatoes and Beyond Burger with Broccoli. Boyfriend had a burger and fries. Drinks we ordered were the Diablito (no rim) and the Prickly Pear Margarita. We both preferred the Diablito. Food was good, no complaints. The service was ok. After we got the check it took 15 mins for her to return to take the payment. After a long bike ride, the group decided to stop in Soulard for food. This was the next place to accommodate a group of 6. And it was lively as soon as we pulled up. I believe the owner greeted us, and informed us about the live music and the birthday celebration going on. We took that as an invitation to go on in haha. It was pretty crowded but we were able to find seats at a bar outdoors. We had to get the attention of the waitress after a few minutes because it was pretty busy. But they made sure to get our orders before leaving. Fortunately, a tad later, a group at a table leaving offered their table to us, which we accepted. It took a while to get the food. Which is understandable because of the event and busyness of the place. I got the chili Mac and salad. The chili Mac, which I look up via Yelp to try (Thanks Jason P.), was good. I think the chili by itself would've been awesome during the cold, non biking weather. This was a lighter version with the Mac. Nice flavor. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their food as well, which people mostly got sandwiches or burger. This is a good spot to try. read more

This little gym is located in the Soulard community of St Louis. It's got a big bar, table seating and a stage for musicians and a large outdoor garden. Tried hammerstones with my business partner while on a trip to St Louis. It's generally bar type food. But there is a wide range in quality when you talk about bar food. Hammerston's I think has its stuff together. My first visit I had the hot fried chicken platter. Oh my God... Was that ever good! It literally came right out of the fryer and onto my plate, and it was volcano lava hot! And hot in terms of spicy, too! And juicy, don't forget juicy! Top that off with a local Amber beer. Omg... Stopped here for a drink and happened to catch some live music. Do note: they add a mandatory 5 dollar cover to each person on your bill when you settle up. There are small signs that let you know but some people don't read the small signs. I like that they support musicians and hope the band and wait staff get the majority of the 5 per person collected. I ordered a Planters Punch and was told they were out of pineapple juice, which is fine so I agreed to get it. It was heavy on the grenadine and lime syrup....made for an unpleasant cocktail that was too sweet and artificial tasting. Our server, Sage, was wonderful, though. He had his hands full but was attentive, friendly and prompt. The band was also really good, but I prefer tipping the band directly rather than a cover not knowing if the musicians and wait staff get the majority of funds collected. read more

Nice patio for lunch on a pleasant day. But don't be in a hurry, at least not on the Friday we were there. It wasn't very crowded, but took quite a while for our table afford to get our food. It's normally not a big deal, but if you're trying to eat during your lunch hour, then it is. I ordered the crawfish po boy, which was really pretty good. I upgraded the side to the soup of the day, which happened to be a creamy soup with andouille sausage. It was disappointing, because it was pretty bland. Definitely needed some seasoning. read more

Hammerstone's is one of my go-to establishments amongst the Soulard bar scene. The location is perfect, it's central to both the north and south end of Soulard with ample parking (cars, carts, and bikes!) With its location on Russell, it's easy to stop by for a post work happy hour or for lunch on a weekend before you head to a ballgame. Since COVID, we have gone to Hammerstone's a few times mainly for their patio. The patio in the back of the bar features a bar, an area for a band, plus covered and uncovered seating. Hammerstone's really makes an effort to ensure you find a comfortable seat to enjoy their food and drink. The drinks are pretty much what you'd expect from a neighborhood bar in Soulard. You have a wide selection of Anheuser-Busch products as well as a nice list of other local, craft beers and seltzers. They also offer hurricanes on draught so that you can pretend it is Mardi Gras in Soulard all year round! I have always enjoyed the food from Hammerstone's too! I can't complement their chili enough. On cold days it's a delicious way to warm up. But in warmer months, I love eating the chili mac for a less hot option. The flavors are really good and the price is digestible! If you're looking for a classic Soulard experience, Hammerstone's should make the top of your list for sure. read more

I want to hate this place, really, but my honest review gives a 4 star. Living around the likes of Molly's, 1860, Henry's and Hammerstone's can get old. If not for the county folk that come to the neighborhood every weekend to cry, break up, get wasted and leave trash, it's the obnoxiously loud motorcycles all weekend, day and night that love to hear themselves rev and rev to show how macho they are. And for what redeeming qualities, a ride to a Cardinals game? The bar food scene is not for me. I hate bar food, and Molly's is no step up even if they claim to be. Hammerstone's, upon first glace, seems to be bar food. It probably falls into that category, HOWEVER, I can judge by the quality of the salad lettuce and let me tell you, it's a few steps above bar food. I've been three times, again wanting to hate it, but the service was good. The salad and sandwiches are quality. That mustard/remoulade sauce is bomb. I admit it. I can't speak to all the food and likely there may still be some typical bar foods and bad items but hey, the salads are not bad at all! The patio always has kids, dogs, music. It seems like a much healthier time than the Molly's train wreck patio, for example. But I'm still going to complain about the super loud show off motorcycles these places attract which just drives me nuts. read more

I haven't been to a bar dedicated to blues before. Hammerstones is awesome and they have all the seating laid out to face the stage. The lights are so pretty inside.
