First time trying Hank's today as a walk-in carryout customer. The staff were friendly but were more attentive to dine-in customers. I ordered a pulled pork plate with sides of collards and green beans. Everything was delicious, but the portion size of pork was way way too small, especially since it contained an inedible hunk of bone. Enjoyed the generous side dish portions but the meat should be star of the show. The sauces were great. I'll be back for the sides. Maybe not for the overpriced meat. read more

We were really excited to try Hank's based on the reviews and the delightful smell every time we drive by. Unfortunately, it was shockingly bad! The positive first; waitress was nice and service was prompt. Negatives; all our food! Brisket hadn't been trimmed properly, so our very small portion with the meat and 2 sides was 50% fat with no smoke ring or flavor. Coleslaw tasted mostly of water, collards were not good but not terrible either, just odd. The potato salad tasted just like the store bought tub but at least look better than that, it was probably the best part of the meal. My wife also mentioned how gross the bathroom was. For a place that bill's itself as Texas bbq, they get all the Texas parts wrong. Texas is brisket land, so why is it 3 extra bucks for a meat option? Odd! Came here for lunch after it being on the list to try for about a year and wish I made it in sooner. The place was very clean and welcoming and service was good. The menu is huge the only problem with coming hungry is EVERYTHING sounds good. Started with the bottlecaps and they were great. Fried lightly and spicy and they use fresh jalapeños. Split the barBQTery board. The favorites among both were the ribs, brisket and pulled pork. Chicken was a tad over smoked but not bad. The sides we got were Mac and cheese and collard green. Texas barbecue at it's finest - a true taste of the wood fired barbecue tradition, performing the art of long-smoking meat to the pinnacle of tenderness while capturing enough smoke to penetrate and build a lovely smoke ring topped with a flavorful, crunchy bark. Hank's nails this! The offset smoker pumps out such a wonderful smell, I caught it from across the street and had to come in for a bite. I was blown away by how good this barbecue is - the portions were huge and the BBQ sauces are outstanding and unique (White garlic aioli, Carolina Mustard, Texas, Cold Brew Coffee, and Peach Habanero). Cruising around on Thursday looking for dinner. Yelp recommended Hanks, so decided to give it a shot. Kind of a non-descript place from High Street, but open air setup with a big ass smoker outside means BBQ awaits! It's self seating- there's a bar, a few 4 tops, a big wall with double tops, chairs and sofa seats, and a bunch more seats under a patio overhang facing the street. Has a great local feel to it. Was greeted promptly and decided to plop at the bar. Wasn't drinking this time (wanted to try the pure BBQ tastes), but there were about 15 drafts and bunch of mixed drink specials. I got the 2 meet dinner with brisket and pulled pork with Mac-n-cheese and collard greens. I favored the brisket more than the pulled pork, but both were really juicy and flavorful. The sauces are the stars here. I did the peach habanero, Carolina mustard, and white BBQ. The habanero had a great tang to it, with enough heat to be comfortable and springy. The Carolina BBQ had a good mustard tang and was also flavorful. The white BBQ was a kind of garlic aioli type sauce. It was the thickest of the 3, and was the least tangy, but still had good flavor. The greens were plenty hot and great tasting. I kind of prefer the Mac-n Cheese In casserole form with crusty top, but these twisty macaroni pasta pieces had great taste and seasoning too. As an Austin transplant, I just need to throw it out there-Hank's is not Texas BBQ. I can't say that I'm shocked, because we're in Ohio, but I did have high hopes. I had a brisket sandwich, and the brisket was moist but also incredibly fatty, and left an almost...fishy taste in my mouth. I tried both the white barbecue sauce and the Texas barbecue. They were both mediocre. The fries were good, but too salty. The cornbread sucked. Last but not least, they don't offer fresh brewed sweet tea, and that is a sin. The barBQtery board was a shamless display of some of the most perfect BBQ ever placed before these two serious eaters. Nothing was dry! The smoked chicken has so much umami it was almost obscene ( in the best way). Not too much smoke, it was balanced and So juicy. Sausage was snappy and flavorful. I ate the brisket with my hands- just saying. The ribs were simular Eli's in Cinci (a high compliment) , but not dried out and didnt 'need' sauce! Perfect! House sauce was on point, but the meat didnt need it. The sides alone are going to pull me back in weekly. mac and cheese was real deal, collards are so good ( long a low lovin here), baked bean burnt edges -wow! Ok- the spoon bread. Just wow! What kind of "BBQ" place opens at 3 on a Saturday and you order online and when you get there at 5 they're "out of ribs?" Furthermore, it's not like we ordered several full slabs of ribs and they couldn't fulfill the order, we ordered their $24 platter which includes only 3 ribs and you mean to tell me after opening up way in the afternoon at 3 pm they couldn't find 3 ribs in the entire place. It's about a dozen BBQ places we passed in the city on our way to a place that runs out of stuff 2 hours after being open. That's inexcusable. I know we're in a pandemic but I haven't heard any shortages on pork ribs. Plus they can smoke mounds of sausages at this place so pork is definitely plentiful and accessible for this place. We substituted the 3 ribs they didn't have in the $24 platter for some type of jalapeño cheddar sausage. So in essence we got double sausage in the order. Honestly if we were in the mood for a whole bunch of sausages for $24 we could've saved the trip and went to Schmidt's which is another place we passed on the way to making the trip to this place that is plum out of various things when you get there although they've got plenty of prep time as they open at 3. I could see if they opened at 11am and had issues but they gah damn open at 3pm on the weekend. Fourth of July is coming up and maybe folks may be thinking of this place to cater their event as opposed to firing up the grill in hot weather and imagine being told they don't have this that or the other for your hungry guests on a monumental holiday unlike prior holidays as more people will be gathering together due to vaccines and lifted restrictions from the pandemic. Wish I could comment on the ribs but oh yeah...they were all out and we didn't get any after passing a dozen places that does have them. It was almost like a savory cornbread dressing type cake. The chicken was smoked and slightly juicy but flavorless. It needed those sauces to balance it out. The brisket was chewy, rubbery, fatty and flavorless, the pork was dry and flavorless. We were supposed to get double sausage with two different kinds of sausage: a chicken sausage and a cheddar jalapeño but to no surprise when we open up the box we only got one type-cheddar jalapeño, the white bread was pointless and they should've provided the ability to sub out white bread for cornbread spoon bread. They throw in pickles and pickled onion and veggies that are just for show and decoration. Unsure why folks are ranting and raving about this place. We assume that since it's in Clintonville and that area is big on farmers markets, organic foods, and eating grass and hay, that when they decide to have a cheat day and try this place under delusion and psychosis they proclaim this place "good," but ITS NOT! A few weeks ago, we came out for dinner at Hank's Texas BBQ in Clintonville and it was amazing. The fried green tomatoes were not the best I have ever had but were okay. The BBQtery board was the perfect selection for myself and my husband to share. We LOVED the sausages and the ribs and also enjoyed the chicken, brisket and pulled pork. In recent years there have been some good BBQ places pop up in Columbus. Hank's Texas BBQ is one of those places. The service was friendly and fast. We started out with their tater tots, which aren't really tater tots but little bites of deliciousness! They top them with this crumble that appears to be the dust from a bag of Cheetos. Yummy! I had the Hank's Way sandwich and WOW it was the best bbq sandwich I've had. It was moist, tasty, and not too fatty. The pickled onion just gave it that extra pop of tangy flavor. My husband has the barrio tacos and thought those were very good. They weren't for me as I found them a bit too greasy. But again, the sandwich is all I needed. We have now had their food a few times and the meals that we continue to recommend to friends are the brisket and jalapeno sausage. Their coleslaw is also good and the baked beans might be the best-baked beans at a BBQ joint I've ever had. I've been here and ordered the corn fritters, yum and friends ordered nachos. This is a fun location to eat at but the parking is not awesome. Walk if you can or think ahead in case you have to hunt for parking. To me, that means smashed, crispy patties with just enough salt and grease to remind you to take your blood pressure medication but not so much as to warrant a visit to the cardiologist. "Best barbecue in Ohio". After living in Austin for many years, my standards are a bit high. But this place is outstanding. Anyone in Ohio is probably pretty easy to impress. I like the brisket and the jalapeno cheddar sausage and the pork loin. The corn bread pudding and greens are awesome as well. The bartender guy is real nice, I forget his name. The dining room is loud and echo-y and the tables are small and wobbly. The BBQ came out not terribly hot. We got the sampler so we could try everything and I hate to say it but nothing was terribly memorable - the brisket was tough and the ribs stringy, not sliding-off-the-bone. Mac and cheese was flavorful but dry and the baked beans tasted more of green orioles than anything else (an odd choice). Wanted the dust to settle on the opening of this new BBQ Restaurant before I checked it out. Today was the day, got seated and was greeted by Max my waiter. Super friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. Decided to order the brisket and pulled pork for meats. The brisket had a great bark and smoke ring to it. It felt dry on the outside but surprise, when you pulled it apart, it was super moist. The pulled pork was very moist and tasty. Good Stuff. On to the sides. I ordered a bunch. First the potato salad, it is a very light mayonnaise based salad, made with redskin potatoes that were cooked to almost tender which is totally different from everyone else's. Had just almost a crunch with them, add some chopped scallions on top and it is a very refreshing dish. The mac and cheese was made with large spiral noodles and a great deal of creamy cheese. Delicious!! Then there was the Corn Spoon Bread, super moist with tons of flavor and a slight sweetness to it, add the slight crunchiness of the corn, Yummy!!!!! The Burnt Ends Baked Beans were made with a firm sauce that went well the diced red peppers, pepper and the Burnt Ends. And lastly the Collard Green's, they were well cooked, mixing some tomatoes, onion, greens and pork. No heavy vinegar taste here. Nice and smooth. Service was excellent. Also had the opportunity to talk with Jessica Harkrider, one of the owner's. Her husband Brad is in charge of the Food Operation. He has the credentials also. Graduate of CSCC, worked at the Club at Tartan Fields and Executive Chef at the J.Liu Restaurants. He is using oak, cherry, and hickory to smoke his meats. I was so bummed by our experience with take out at Hank's. My fiancé ordered the strawberry salad and brisket quesadilla, and they were fine -- not worth going out of your way for, but they were fine. I got a side order of ribs that were fall off the bone and delicious, but these were also cold. The salad I got was missing half the toppings -- it was just wilting romaine lettuce with cheese and Cheeto dust, hardly worth $7. I've traveled all over this country and everyone (mostly men) always tell everyone where to get the best bbq. As a woman, I took them to Hank's and now they will tell you, this is the BEST brisket they've ever had. We were in town on thanksgiving to work for the OSU/Michigan game and I needed to find someplace open for our lunch while we were working. Hank's wasn't scheduled to be open on thanksgiving but after I went in to explain I needed to feed 100 people for lunch that day, the owner and staff agreed they'd like to feed us. They opened for us for a few hours and we bought my amazing crew lunch. Brisket, pulled pork, sausages, chicken, Mac and cheese and OMG the corn cakes. They even offered us vegetarian options if needed. They had a huge crew working to make this lunch so special and every bite was well received. They're still talking about it today. This place is not only some of the best food I've ever had hands down, the staff goes above and beyond, like no other. We felt so at home and taken care of.
