    Sườn Ram Chua combo $18
    Nikky B.

Hanoi Kitchen Is A Comfort Food That Feels Like Home! As of 7/21/2025, NEW BUSINESS HOURS POSTED ON THEIR FRONT DOOR Friday to Monday: 10am-3pm, Reopen 5pm-8pm Closed: Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday (Per their website, these new hours started March 2025) This summer's obsession of mine with Bánh Cuốn continuing back to Portland after a weekend of indulgence in Westminster and Garden Grove, CA. That led me to finally try Hanoi Kitchen, even though I've driven past it for the last four years. I called ahead early Friday afternoon (7/21/2025) and asked them to save me one order of Bánh Cuốn. They confirmed it's made in the morning and reheated per order, but assured me it would still taste fresh and not turn chewy. They were right. What we ordered (Party of 3): -1 Bánh Cuốn - $14 -Combo A: Cá Bông Lau Kho Tộ & Canh Chua Tôm - $18 -Combo B: Sườn Ram Me & Canh Khoai Tây - $18 -1 Vietnamese Iced Coffee (Cà Phê Sữa Đá) - $7 -1 Dozen Organic Eggs (boxed & refrigerated) - $6 Total: $64 Food quality: -Bánh Cuốn: Soft and tender as promised. The chả lụa (Vietnamese pork roll) was a bit softer than I prefer, and the fish sauce was decent but didn't stand out. Still, it hit the spot though I had better. -Combo A: The catfish came with one skinless and filleted instead of the usual bone-in round cuts, so the depth of flavor was slightly lacking. The canh chua tôm (hot & sour prawn soup) was light (lạt), missing the tangy punch I hoped for. Celery was used in place of bạc hà (Vietnamese taro stem), which I understood, but missed. -Combo B: Sườn ram me (tamarind pork) was a solid comfort dish. The accompanying canh khoai tây (potato soup) had good intention but used lean pork chunks; I'd prefer bones or short ribs for better texture and broth depth. -Cà phê sữa đá: Slow-drip style, just like home, but could've used a stronger brew and a better condensed milk-to-coffee ratio. Still appreciated the authenticity. -Organic Eggs: Easy grab-and-go, already boxed and chilled. Great price at $6/dozen. Ambiance: A true mom-and-pop/small family owned feel. While waiting, we heard our meal being made fresh in the kitchen, like being in someone's home. There was one dine-in guest as we arrived, and two takeout orders came through while we waited. Plenty of free street parking on NE Glisan, plus their own lot in back. The décor is dated, inside and out. It's a slightly rougher neighborhood, so I get why the hours are limited. Restroom note: Ladies' room had no toilet seat covers, so I took one from the gentlemen's side since we were the only ones there. Cleanliness-wise, it was fine. Overall: This was honest, humble Vietnamese home cooking, just the way you'd expect from a family kitchen. Nothing fancy, but comforting, familiar, and homeyness. It satisfied our cravings for exactly what we ordered, and we'll absolutely be back for a repeat when the mood strikes.

So glad the dinning room is open again. Wish this place seemed to be busier, maybe they do most stuff takeout. The few times we have been here pre and post covid the dinning room was never very busy but the food has always been excellent. The crepes make a great appetizer and not really a meal in my opinion, or a meal if you want a light dinner. Over the years I have tried that dish, the broken rice, noodle bowl and several of the soups and I can say they are all worth it. We have never had anything we did not like here. Now they even sell farm fresh eggs for $5 a dozen (as of Nov 2025)

During quick trip to Portland, I had to get me my fix of Vietnamese food at Hanoi Kitchen. The bun bo hue and banh cuon were excellent. Bun Bo Hue had a rich deep flavorful broth with pork blood and pork legs. The banh cuon was soft and delicious with fresh cha lua. Service was friendly and top notch,

I absolutely love Vietnamese food. I enjoy learning about the subtle differences between regional dishes, and often find restauranteurs in Portland are open to sharing knowledge of their cuisine me. I was recently excited to learn that in relation to pho, soup from the north features a more refined, clear broth with minimal toppings. And soup from the south has a richer, sweeter broth with a wider variety of herbs and garnishes. The history of the dish is really fascinating, and most definitely warrants additional study. I've learned that pho originated in northern Vietnam, in Hanoi. And as families fled northern Vietnam in the 1950s, regional variations of the dish emerged based on availability of local ingredients and tastes. Armed with this knowledge, when I discovered Hanoi Kitchen is one of the few restaurants to feature Northern Vietnamese dishes in Portland, I jumped at the chance to check it out. Hanoi Kitchen has the appearance of being a family restaurant. It's a large, open space with lots of plants and the most gorgeous wood floors I've ever seen. It's a beautiful space filled with art, and has plenty of seating for lots and lots of people. A friendly woman named Kim runs the place, taking orders, making the food, and cleaning up! Her dedication to this restaurant and the community is impressive. And it's clear she's made an impact on the customers she serves. The wall behind the counter is plastered with postcards, letters, wedding invitations and funeral announcements from the friends and family she's served over the years. I love this sense of community as it show's Kim's heart is in both her work and the food she serves. Hanoi Kitchen claims they don't use MSG in the food they prepare, and all of the ingredients appear to be fresh and healthy - in fact, Kim even brings eggs to the restaurant from her own chickens! You can buy organic farm eggs for $5 a dozen! Everything about this restaurant indicates familial, homestyle cooking which is something I strive for these days. I love supporting restaurants and businesses who are invested in the communities they serve.

Some of the best Vietnamese food we've eaten in this town known for its long list of truly good Vietnamese restaurants. Nothing fancy about Hanoi Kitchen's location or its street signage, though the restaurant's interior is clean, spacious and inviting. The tall plants lining the windows let you know this place has been around for a long time. Best is the quality of Hanoi Kitchen's offerings. We are particularly impressed by the freshness of the greens and herbs in the pho garnish plates, as well as the soups themselves. Excellent mi quang, with perfectly cooked noodles, shrimp, ribs, and pork belly in a luscious broth. We are also fond of the bun thit nuong (vermicelli bowl with grilled pork), which my partner says is the best in town. Another favorite: the carmelized fish sauce chicken wings appetizer. Generous and tasty. Delightful service. Overall a lovely spot for a meal. A go-to place for Vietnamese food.

Another amazing visit. Always great and the broth today was extra epic! Ladies are so wonderful and they even have farm fresh eggs available for $5 a dozen!

I've never been into a Vietnamese restaurant where I felt like the entire menu hit the spot on home cooked meals I grew up loving. That was, until I went to Hanoi Kitchen. This had been on our to try list for sometime and we finally made it in. If you're looking for a true home cooked meal: I would order the home style meal. I chose the cá kho tộ and canh chua (braised fish and tamarind soup) and I was just so happy to feel like I was eating at home. The fish gets a little salty due to the nature of the caramelization and braise, but it was well balanced with the sour and spicy soup and white rice. The Banh Cuon is delicious too. We have had a few other items shared between our family and every item was well flavored and hit the spot. It's quiet most times we're here and the family who runs it is really nice. Definitely one of the Top Vietnamese restaurants in Portland. I normally prefer to cook at home but if I'm not and want Vietnamese food, I'll be here.

    Nudos ;)

The pho was ok, not piping hot for a cold rainy day in Portland. The wait time for your lunch was longer than expected from an empty restaurant. With an empty house, it was easy to casually walk around the restaurant to view custom still art on the wall for sale by one of their customers. Supposedly they are from a local surgeon who paints as a hobby. The prices were surgeon priced. Nice garden display in front of the window.

Not even 1/2 full! 3 small rolls for $12.50.

So sad to see them fall so far! Prior to covid Hanoi was my families favorite Banh Cuon location. We went by tonight and was absolutely appalled at the quality and service. For $12.50, I received 3 tiny rolls that weren't even 1/2 filled and the veggies were beyond wilted. I called the restaurant thinking this was a one off and the gentleman who answered the phone said, "that's what you get!" And hung up on me. I called back thinking we got disconnected and a lady answered and started yelling. So sad to see them fall so far

Modern, clean, cool crowd, and somehow I still walked in carrying a cooler like I was headed to a construction site. Folks, if your salad gets soggy because you poured all the dressing on it and let it sit there like a science experiment, that is between you and God. That dumpling showed up hot and smelling so good I forgot my own name for a minute. I looked at it and thought, that ain't gonna fill me up. Ten minutes later I was sitting there defeated, full, and emotionally attached to a noodle. The best move I made was eating the dumpling first and taking the salad home. Boom. Two meals. Problem solved. Einstein level strategy. Great service, fair prices, no wait, and honestly way better than I expected. Whoever gave this place four stars must've been having a personal crisis. Most recently I ordered the Laphet salad and the "KPS" also known as very large dumpling. Both were good. What a find! The food was Pacific Northwest dining using local ingredients and making them shine. We had 3 starters, which allowed us to try different things. But they also gave the option to pre-purchase cookies or caviar, which is a fun way to surprise the reservation party members. We had bar seats and left the option open to order à la carte or go with their prix fixe. The example menu on the website is several months out of date, so I was not quite sure what we'd get. But I understand the focus of this restaurant to be fresh, in-season food, locally sourced, vegetable-forward, French-inspired. It's a neat location near Mt Tabor. There's not a lot nearby, so it feels like a destination. There is a small parking lot next door, which is convenient. You enter through their market/oyster bar. There's not an immediately clear check-in table. And you're walked through the back to the other side where the Coquine dining room is. It feels a tad underwhelming - perhaps too casual for the finer dining expectation. Additionally, the person who greeted us was a tad surly. Service was friendlier during dinner but a little less hands-on than I'd like. I liked the design of the restaurant. Good lighting, natural decor, red countertop. They are a "zero foodprint" restaurant so the napkins and coasters are washable, serving utensils are wood, etc. It gave a very organic feel. Okay that said! We ordered the following à la carte: -Half dozen oysters (fun toppings - pomegranate gelee) -Bread and butter (normal, would skip next time) -Roasted carrots -Shaved cauliflower salad -Potato gnocchi -Pan seared black cod (our favorite) -Citrus tart (unique) Everything was tasty: well prepared, beautiful to look at, fun sauces and elements to discover. It might have been too many cold dishes at the start. We also got a half dozen cookies to go. I've heard that these are the best cookies in the city. They have nuts, which is an immediate disqualifier for me, but even without that I'm not sure they live up to the hype. Very delicious? Sure. Best in the city? I don't know about that. Overall this was a good meal, in a nice atmosphere. It felt very "Pacific Northwest." Worth a visit if you appreciate seasonal, ingredient-driven dining.
