The best I've had in a while, meaty, good size, not too fatty and seasoned perfectly. The boss joked with me about having my duck with a soda and I cheerfully corrected the drink to a cold beer. Be careful, be careful, you are buying roasted duck with bones only. The person who is chopping the duck sneaks a piece or two of the duck into the other bin for themselves. Was not able to get this fresh out of the roaster. My mom bought 2 whole peking ducks for me and we got to eat it 3 hours later. Honestly, the skin wasn't as crispy as I had hoped... EVEN THOUGH IT WAS HOURS LATER. I've definitely had Peking duck that's lasted for longer. We also received it swimming in liquid, which I had no problem with, I just thought it was strange. Bought a BBQ duck or roasted duck but there 2 colors on my tray. On piece is white the rest is orange. I wander where that piece comes from. I will think if I come back or not at all. Pecking Duck & Roasted Pig!! Nom Nom Nom!! This is my parent's go-to spot for buying Pork and Ducks. The roasted ducks ($17.49/each), pecking ducks ($17.49/each), and pig ($9.59/lb) are all displayed behind a glass and you are able to pick which one you think would be tasty. With the ducks they are all the same price, so my mom tends to get the one that looks bigger and less oily. She also critiques on which one looks fresh or not fresh, but to me they all look the same. With the pork, you can pick which area you like the meat to be from. You can ask the butcher to chop you a piece with more meat or more skin. Vietnamese people usually like the pieces where you get the meat, a layer of fat and skin all in one bite!! This is clearly not something you would eat if you are on a diet!! This place also has food to go, but we never get that. And they have bread or the vermicelli noodle sheets that you usually eat with the duck and pork. My only problem with this place is the service. They are not accommodating at all. One time my mom asked for half a pound of the roasted pig and the butcher gave her such an attitude. He said it was IMPOSSIBLE for him to cut up half a pound and that she had to buy at least one pound. Then at the register the cashier girl was making it sound like we're so unreasonable. She was all complaining like, it's possible to cut up like 2/3 pound or something but it will never be exactly 1/2 a pound. I'm thinking DUHH, when I order a pound it's always a little more... The problem is their difficult attitude about it!! The early bird catches the worm, or in this case, the early glutton catches the yummy cha siu. This place has all sorts of BBQ items -- duck, roast pork, cha siu, that is, if you are able to grab some before it's all sold out. There are a bunch of other stuff which I don't know the names to -- innards which is sitting in some marinated liquid and more. They are very friendly even if you don't speak Vietnamese. A bit of pointing and waving of your hand is all you need. They pretty much understand what you're saying and what you want. Just make sure you go early! read more

There are quite a few BBQ places in Little Saigon, but we always opt to get ours at Hao Vi. We like getting roasted duck and roasted pork. So good. If you have a certain cut of the pork that you prefer, call in, and let them know you like the "pork belly" cut or whatever. And they will hold it for you. (Hint: the roasted pork sells really fast, especially on the weekends) If you are adventurous and gutsy (no pun intended), you can order the pork intestines, pork blood, and the other fun items. Once upon a time, there was a local and authentic BBQ shop that had the best roasted pork anywhere in OC. They put so much care and passion into their food that you can simply taste it in the smell of the togo bag sitting beside you in your car, as you sit there, contemplating if you should devour the entire 3lbs of pork on the commute home and deal with the wrath of your mother later or just leave the food in the trunk where you can't reach it. But with all the booming business, a curse fell upon them and they started to put less care into the quality of the food they produced. Their attitudes became haughty, yelling at customers for simple things like ordering too many items too slowly or simply because they want 1.5 lbs of pork. But wait, no, they actually only cut full pounds, not 1/2 pounds or 1/4 pounds. The funny thing is, every time I ask for 3 lbs, they always go over by 1/2 or 1lb and ask me if I can take it. I mean, yeah, I have to because you already cut it. If you don't take it, the guys behind the counter bitch at you and make snarky remarks. Lo and behold, today was a special holiday and it was crazy packed so they have to pump out roasted pigs like it's no one's business. Bought $50 worth of roasted pork belly, and let me tell you, it was the nastiest thing ever. Tasted putrid like armpit, and I had to spit it out to stop myself from gagging. I mean, for $15/lb, I might as well open up my own BBQ place and sell it for half the price at 10x the quality of what this place is offering, with a free side of smiles and a hello to every customer that walks in. I'm all about supporting local, small, shady hole-in-the-wall businesses with mind-blowing, epic food that'll have you waiting outside the door before the shop even opens, but seriously, have better quality control, Hao Vi! Don't be cutting corners with preparation or buying cheap, smelly pigs. I know they have to cook 'em fast to meet the demand but someone could potentially get seriously ill from badly prepared meat. Came here on Christmas Day, super long line. The 5 star review is for food, roasted pork was amazing. The skin was nice and crispy, the meat was extremely tender, juicy, and very flavorful. The duck was just a delicious. Very juicy, fatty, and well seasoned. For a very busy day, they had plenty of meat/product. A few other places actually ran out, so this place was my 3rd stop. Secondary Review: Customer Review Customer service was a completely different story (1-2 stars). Super long line, the staff were too chatty with each other. Pretty long wait... about 45 minutes. We got in at about 11:45am and they were almost out of a lot of things. No more Soy Sauce Chicken and barely any Roasted Pig left. I got a box of powdery and smelly BBQ pork meat. The texture was so grainy, making me wonder if it's even meat.... Did the pig died a long time ago, they forgot about its corpse. One day, they ran out of pigs so they decided to cook the pig corpse or something? Disgusting beyond words. Either that or the pig was really old, therefore its meat was saggy and no longer firm? What a joke! I come here early to pick up roasted pork and received something I didn't order and they gave us OLD meat. They said it was freshly made when I ordered it, but once I got home I realized I was conned. $30 dollars I spent on this, and I wanted the right cut. Came in around 2:30pm to pick up an early dinner and ordered a Peking duck as well as 1lb of roast pork (lechón). The Peking duck was not as flavorful as a normal roast duck, but still tasty. The pork skin was almost inedible because it was extremely hard. The meat was really tender and flavorful. Both were a bit of a let down because they were both cold upon purchase. I've tried three asian bbq shops: Lien Hoa, New Duong, and Hao Vi. The key distinction among them for the roast duck is that New Duong was the most salty so it had a more intense flavor; Hao Vi was the most sweet so go here if you like more sweetness in your bbq, and Lien Hoa was more balanced in the middle between the three. Customer service was the most friendly at New Duong, followed by Lien Hoa, and Hao Vi (the issue at Hao Vi is the guys cutting the meat - they can be impatient with customers). All said, you can't go wrong with any of these shops for roast duck. read more
