Thought it was herbal soup, but it was some kind of seaweed soup. I was hungry, so everything tasted good, except for the fried fish (a bit dry). Apparently the new chef is from the same hometown as my family, which is part of the reason why they keep coming back; they claim they can't find the same flavors and ingredients elsewhere. Personally, probably because I grew up here and not in China, I don't necessarily share the same sentiment as my family. I don't care much for that stone pot rice, however, I do enjoy the soup! It's packed with collagen and super warming from the peppercorns and ginger. Their other dishes, including the classic salt and pepper shrimp and garlic pea shoots, are all pretty solid. We were not disappointed except for one of the dishes we were looking forward to, a Whole Streamed Live Fish. Their menu shows a choice of Redspot, Grouper, Sea Bass, and they had none, bummer! We decided on their Pickle and Sour Fish Soup, it wasn't a bad choice and we had plenty left over to take home where I'll add seafood for another meal or two. The five other dishes were also very delicious. Yhe restaurant was not that busy with only three groups of diners. The service was excellent especially since the server spoke hardly any English, fortunately one of us was totally literate in Mandarin Chinese. saw a great review on this newly opened (4-months) restaurant in MP. hubby and I came to try for…read morelunch around 12pm on a Saturday. a big parking lot behind the building with plenty of spaces, a big +. the restaurant is a spacious space with several large and small tables. we also found out later they even have 2 party rooms that can seat 10 or 15 guests. we got seated right away. we've noticed that almost every table has the fish head with chopped chili sauce 剁椒魚頭 (hubhy's favorite), so we ordered the same from their lunch menu (which has lots of selections for good price) plus regular menu's stir-fried beef, both with less spicy. both dishes were tasty. fish head was a huge plate of meaty head that we can only finish half of the plate (leftover for our next meal). the stir fry beef had lots of cilantros (my favorite), green pepper (not spicy) but still too spicy for my taste, (probably will ask for no spicy next time). the meal was served with a pot of steamed rice, very generous. the cook/chef came out and talked with us at the end and we found out he was the chef for another Hunan restaurant that we used to visited all the time for these same dishes (no wonder the flavor was so familiarly good). the restroom was large and clean, hopefully they'll keep it that way as time past. seems like all the other patrons enjoyed their food. one table of 2 sitting behind us ordered 5 dishes so they can take home some. hubby mentioned that he likes that their bill recommended tips from 12%+ (unlike some places starts off at 18%). he gave more than 12% per their service today. definitely want to come back and try their other dishes.

In the most convoluted sequence of restaurant occupancy in the annals of Chinese restaurants in the United States, Noodle King has supplanted Rice Hero/Hero's Kitchen/In Joy Lunch in Alhambra in the space formerly occupied by a different restaurant named Noodle King in the 1980s and 1990s. There's a lot to explain here. I used the compound name for the previous occupant because the name on the front entrance was Rice Hero, the back entrance said Hero's Kitchen and the digital menus said In Joy Lunch. I say the old restaurant was supplanted, not replaced, because the old restaurant sort of still hangs around, with a tiny sheet of paper with all 3 old names taped to the front door, and many old dishes still on the menu. Why the three names I don't know. In Joy Lunch had been a popup that operated during lunch hour serving Dongbei food in a space in YYDS Fried Strings in Rosemead. In Joy Lunch then struck out on their own last year with this space in Alhambra, adding the new names. The old Noodle King had been a Taiwanese noodle fixture before moving out in 2003. Since the new Noodle King also serves some of the Rice Hero/Hero's Kitchen/In Joy Lunch items, the same name seems to be just a coincidence. But despite holdover menu items the staff clearly say they're a new restaurant, with the Noodle King himself greeting you at the front entrance and the signage in both front and back now say Noodle King.
