Meh... I would really like to have a solid Chinese-American restaurant in Sherwood or Newberg. Woo's Open Kitchen in Tigard is good, but a bit of a drive through traffic. House of Good Fortune in Sherwood is unfortunate and Eden Gate in Newberg isn't very good either. So, I tried Happy Family and came away unhappy. The place is ok. The service was good. But the food was mediocre at best. And who puts peas in Kung Pao Chicken? Maybe a few peas for color, but this dish was more like Kung Pao Peas. The Fried Rice was ok. The noodles bland. Overall is was just a miserable plate of below-average food. Chinese cuisine tends to be -- at first glance -- vegetarian-friendly. But ask. I don't know about this place, but a lot of traditional Chinese cooking uses meat stocks or meat fats even in "all-vegetable" dishes. What seems like a perfectly vegetarian dish may have chicken stock or pork fat in it. And all deep-fat frying (meat and vegetables) may be done in the same oil. And as for vegan, you'll have to judge for yourself just how far you trust this place to keep scrupulous vegan standards. This place is fine for children, but there is no children's menu. This place is right off of 99W. You can turn in or out from either direction on 99W (which isn't always true in Newberg). They have parking. But, my advice is give this place pass. read more

New to the area we tried this restaurant. I read reviews and yes, the prices are good but the food was mediocre at best. We ordered chicken LO Mein, sweet and sour chicken, kung pao chicken, king pao three dish and broccoli beef. Tons of breading on the deep fried items- to the point we had to figure out what was deep fried. Fried rice was good but pretty hard to mess that up. Wish I had better things to say but also had to walk through piles of stacked furniture and other weird items (including two non useable booths filled with family items?) to a dark, dingy room to play video poker while waiting. I love me some combo. However I've become slightly more discerning. I don't know why I'm so offended by the excessive packaging. I guess technically I get slightly more food but it's so unnecessary. The Mongolian beef was pretty good. Nice and tender. I'm pretty anti green onion which is what half of the vegetables were but that's my problem. I fished around the vegetables like a good grown ass man. The sweet and sour pork was kind of disappointing. I can respect keeping the sauce separate but the box is not the right vessel. It was a little dried out and hence could have used a bath in the sauce. The batter on the fried shrimp was a little thick. Cooked decent enough but not very good batter. Fried rice did its job. Nothing spectacular but did not offend. Overall not a great value nor really exceptional food. It was good enough overall. read more

It's hard to find good Chinese food anywhere, unless you go to a few places in Portland. Happy Family is not only depressing, it smells really bad and is very old and dirty!! There is one waitress only and she is doing her best, but she is running all the time trying to do everything by herself, SHE NEEDS HELP! I can handle all of that if the food is good, but there wasn't one dish that the six of us liked, 85% of our food went into the trash and we were all still hungry! It really is one of the worse Chinese food restaurants around, beside Jade's in Dundee, which is worse then Happy Family! it's heartbreaking because at one time both of these restaurants were very good. read more

The Happy has left the family. The staff was not happy and did not interact with us. The food was so so and not flavorful.1/3 of the restaurant was being used as a storage area. Fantastic Chinese food - we ordered General Tso chicken, sweet n sour shrimp, egg rolls and pork fried rice. I too have eaten here many times. I love the General Tsa chicken although I know it is not a Chinese dish. There are better and more expensive Chinese restaurants in Portland if you are preordering say Peking Duck, but this is where the locals come for a hearty fairly priced Chinese meal. Chop suey and teriyaki on the menu do NOT a Chinese restaurant make. Run, run, run if you see those items offered in a Chinese restaurant. My visiting family wanted a nice Chinese meal and being new to the area, we found Happy Family and thought we'd give them a try. Maybe their family was 'happy' but ours sure wasn't. Chow mein was incredibly greasy and pretty much flavorless except for the salt content. Spring rolls? Also greasy. Food at best was at the lower end of 'meh' and at worst, well, let's just say that we left hungry. And we were barely served when the check arrived at our table. Won't be back. Not sure about the 1 and 2 star reviews on here- I have come here many times and, in my opinion, it is the best "Chinese" food in Newberg. The quotes are only because it is clearly a Chinese restaurant geared toward Americans. Nothing wrong with that! Sometimes you just want some tasty comfort food, and this is it! Their fried chicken items like Sesame and General Tso's are really nice white meat pieces- better quality than a lot of places, Friendly service too! We love coming here about once every month or 2. We got take out here after reading some good reviews. The Egg Foo Yong was Good. The Pot Stickers and Spring Rolls were also Good. The Kung Pow Chicken was a real miss. I love a great Kung Pow, and this wasn't it. However, The thing that really won me over here was the Egg Rolls. We have eaten here three times now and it's our new favorite Chinese restaurant above all the ones we've tried in Sherwood, Tigard and Tualatin. The food seems fresher than other places, it's ready on time, still hot when we get it home and the portions are generous. The orders are always correct. The vegetables are cooked perfectly (not overdone). The staff is friendly. We have tried the fried rice, sweet & sour pork (a favorite), won ton soup, moo goo gai pan, chicken lo main, broccoli beef and cashew chicken. This is the best chinese you will find for 45 miles in any direction. Huge portions, really kind and hospitable husband and wife team (I think). Lunchtime - It was about 6 bucks and came with soup, and egg roll. Then the entree had about two or three cups of rice and a huge plate of mongolian beef. It was AWESOME. The Asian Bistro (AB) is Newberg's latest entry into the world of semi-pro dining. AB is a confusing little place. The music is italian classical, the decor is grandma/asian. The name 'Asian Bistro' suggests something young, hip, or trendy if you will. You expect to be served some pan-asian-american food. 'Asian' would suggest perhaps some Japanese, Indian, or perhaps Thai food. Nope. Make no mistake about it: it is Chinese through and through (they do have curry chicken..chinese style). Immediately upon entering the small business lot that AB resides in, you notice that parking is limited and shared with 5 or more other businesses and nowhere else to park nearby, right off 99w no less. Not sure where you'd park if the lot was full... The place was probably at 50% capacity when we arrived for rush hour dinner. Time seemed to slow down because the service was crawling. We waited a tad too long to get seated, our order taken, etc. Oh well, they're new; I can be patient for good food. I ordered almond chicken, the wife had garlic shrimp and Little G had a free bowl of Egg Drop (AB language for egg flower) soup. An appetizer of crab puffs and we were set. The waitress said she get us a tea cup but never did so I stole one from another table. Minus half star. She kept the drinks refilled like a pro. Plus one star. Food: the crab puffs were excellent. Fried nice and light (with clean oil) and good filling. The almond chicken was not too visually appealing. It looked all brown, smothered in 'almond' gravy. It was one boneless chicken breast, breaded and deep fried. Damn it was good. Plus one star! The wife said the shrimp were also good. Little G's soup was ho-hum. Tasted like store bought packaged crap. Still, the best place for Egg Flower soup around these here parts is Lucky Fortune (see my reviews). The "fried rice" sucked. I'm pretty sure it was minute rice or something. Rice and egg. Thats it. No real amount of soy, no veggies, just rice and egg...bad rice and egg that is. Look around AB, you won't see a knife. Anywhere. It's like AB doesn't have knives. I needed one to cut up G's chicken portion but had to use a fork instead. By the time the waitress came around it would be too late (but she strangely kept those waters full). We had to ask for soy sauce. At a chinese joint! The nerve! You get the general feeling that the people running the place are still trying to get everything running smoothly. I'm going to give them a chance and try it again. We tried this place for the first time and got takeout for New Years Eve. When I opened the containers I thought there had been a mistake, my beef looked like chicken. Nope, it was beef just the color of chicken, it tasted like it looked- gross. I picked around the meat but the veggies were mushy. The batter on the shrimp and deep fried egg rolls were heavy.
