It pains me to post this review. First, the food is fantastic and priced fairly. Our server (Brook) tried to rip us off, and it actually looks like the restaurant supports the "scam" based on how the bill was presented. We ordered two Lamb Chops/Lobster Tail dinners ($49.99 each -- and well worth it! The chops were probably the best we've ever had!), and my wife ordered one glass of the less expensive wine ($9/glass). Our un-itemized receipt came back at $138.92. At the bottom were suggested gratuity amounts: 15% $17.96, 18% 21.53 and 20% $23.95. I usually would tip 20% of the amount after tax, but since their recommended was $23.95, I tipped $24. But...something wasn't right. Instead of $138.92 it should have been about $115.52 (with tax). We asked for the itemized receipt and Brook kept doing other busy work before finally brining it over (reprinting it). It revealed that the glass of wine was upcharged to the $13 wine, and guess what! There was a gratuity of $19 already figured in. So, with my $24, she would have had a $43 tip on $115.52 (37%). We simply took off the $24 tip and let it go. But, think about all the folks whose bills weren't so easy to calculate (for us, $100 + $9). And after sitting and drinking for a couple hours, they would pay it and not give it another thought! Buyer beware. Now...ambiance. the lighting was so dim we all had to use our cellphones to read the menu. And, it looks like the carpeted floor had not been vacuumed in weeks -- or longer. read more

Please call and check to see when the business is open before you arrive. This restaurant has some of the nicest stain glass displayed throughout the restaurant. We were out early and just happen to stop by and was one of the first customers for the day. Our server was nice and attentive. We ordered drinks Melon Ball which was refreshing. As for an appetizer chicken strips which came with fries was delicious. They were crispy, moist and seasoned well. For the main course I ordered the Fisherman's Platter which consisted of fried catfish, fried shrimp and shrimp scampi with a fully loaded bake potato. They are very generous with the portions all the seafood was delicious however, I would have stuck with the chicken strips, fried shrimp and French fries. I just want to say they have this Collard Green- and Black-Eyed Pea Soup, which is delicious and hearty, I can't wait to get another cup, no wait I will get a bowl next time. When people joke about seafood in the midwest, Harbor House is exactly what they mean. Crab was definitely frozen for long period of time and basically had no flavor. The Breaded Catfish was 75% bread and the fisherman's platter serving of Catfish is a single piece. The Shrimp Scampi was good but I could go Red Lobster for that. The sides were bland, especially the broccoli was unseasoned, steamed, served nearly cold, and mostly just stem. The steak was very good and the mixed drinks were pretty good. Mediocre. Chances are, I won't visit this restaurant again. I made a reservation prior to arriving at the restaurant. There wasn't any organization with the reservations. I honestly think it was a waste of time. There was about a 15 minute wait once we checked in. The restaurant is dark and outdated. This was super disappointing to me considering its pricing and it's downtown location. I was seated in a corner that didn't have lighting. My date and I ate in the dark. Our waitress was really nice. I think her name was Angela. Angela was super nice and tried to make sure my date and I were enjoying ourselves as best she could. The food was okay. One of my favorites places to eat downtown. All you can eat a la carte style. I've eaten here from time to time. The food is really good. I was rotating between the London broil, the ribs and both fishes. Unlimited mushrooms as well. I usually get excited to come and eat here. Come in small groups... I think anything above 8 people, the service seems to slow down a lot. Last time we were here,, we were catered to pretty well. There was a bit of a delay with the food, but I think it's more of the kitchens fault.. plus we were on a time line so it's totally understandable. I'd come back and eat here again. Definitely, had better ! We showed up the hostess told us the seating was for reservation only. We asked to sit at the bar she said ok. The bartender said no food is allowed at the bar. So we went back to hostess and asked for table and she said ok. Some people were eating at the bar so I didn't understand why the bartender said no food allowed. A friend recommended that I try Harbor House saying she loves it, but with the disclaimer that she hasn't been there in a long time. But when I read the reviews, I admit I was nervous because they seemed hit or miss. Nevertheless, I decided to give them a chance. I went on a Thursday at lunchtime. The restaurant's exterior looks gallant with its gold letters set on a deep blue backdrop. Upon entering the restaurant I was disappointed to find that the interior did not have the same splendor. It looked really dated and even had a stale, stuffy smell (minus one star). The place was not crowded at all with a few patrons sprinkled about. We were greeted immediately, seated, given menus and drink orders were taken. Our server was attentive throughout our visit. My friend and I ordered the beer battered mushrooms appetizer (huge portion!) and we both had the 10 piece butterflied shrimp lunch special, which came with fries and cole slaw. There's casual dining and then there's Harbor House. Our experience lacked overall. The laundry list of rules at the bottom of the menu is a turnoff. It assumes that every guest is going to be a problem. There's a 16% gratuity/service fee that applies to some of the oddest scenarios. Being seated after 9 pm, party size of six or more, etc. We went on a Wednesday and were told they don't seat you until your entire party is there. The hostess didn't get that memo because she sat us. Two different people came and reminded us that we weren't supposed to be seated until our remaining guests arrived. We were then told that they could only take drink orders until the entire party was present. This is being impressed so much that I'm thinking it is because they have limitations I'm not aware of. The server says that they have to place the entire dinner order at once to ensure it's all ready at the same time. Oooookay. The last members of our party arrive and we order appetizers. Immediately after putting those in, the server asks if we're ready to order entrées. Rushing a bit? We place our dinner order. A beat later two of the three appetizers come out. Then salads, but we're missing one. It appears they've forgotten an appetizer. My salad still doesn't appear. The server shows up with my entrée and I have to ask for my salad! So my entrée is sitting on the table getting cold while I wait for my salad. The missing appetizer shows up. It's the calamari in the picture. Underwhelmed is an understatement. Not to mention the sticker being left on the lemon. All of the food came out at different times! There were 5-6 minutes in between food coming out, so placing this order all at once didn't ensure anything. We had a party of seven and no two entrées came out at the same time. This place was so terrible, it may have saved my husbands life. Him and I were on a date night and wanted to head to dinner at a spot we had never been before, so we drove around until we found this spot. Upon entering, they told us the wait would be about 25 minutes - with COVID restrictions, we found that to be a reasonable wait time. They suggested we wait at the bar for more comfortable seating, we followed as directed. Shortly after making it to the bar we were then taken to our table. I'm a big fan of architecture so as i looked around and absorbed the scenery, i began to notice the bugs in the lights. It was similar to the zombie apocalypse in the snow, today in Detroit. After the game my friends and I were roaming through completely stalled traffic and drunk Lions fans, trying to find something to eat and kill some time to let the mess of the storm die down. Harbor House ended up being open, unlike half of the other places in the downtown Detroit area. I ordered a gyros and fries. Very, very meh! Some of the pieces were overlooked. The fries were very mediocre. Everyone said the same thing about their dishes. One of my friends had an alfredo dish that looked pretty...... soupy. Decided to stay downtown to be a little closer to the airport as well as be in the city center for ice skating while it snowed tonight. The hotel recommended to come over to Harbor House for dinner so we did. The reviews lately have been hit & miss, so we asked our server, Hannah, what was good on the menu. Ended up going with the shrimp scampi pasta, rattle steak pasta and the Greek lamb chops & lobster. All of our dinners were delicious. Shrimp scampi pasta was a little spicy, which we liked. Just a lot of pasta, so it felt like we didn't make a dent. The rattle steak pasta was absolutely delicious! Totally different than any sauce we've had before, like a stroganoff meets Cajun crème and is was perfect. Greek lamb chops were cooked perfectly and the lobster was as well. Asked for a Cajun butter for the poster and they made it happen. Also, got the Jumbo margaritas and they were great! All in all, a great dinner tonight! Will be back if we come back to Detroit. To conclude a nice day Downtown, we decided to make this our stop for dinner. Presentation As usual I like to start with the presentation. I was going in here with high expectations as this is a pretty well known spot. The setting of this place is pretty dark. It's not a well lit restaurant and that is to each's own I don't mind it at all. When my girlfriend and I got there we were seated at the long booth in the corner of the restaurant with a table. This is probably one of the best seats to sit in. I do wanna add that the wait times for waiters were a little longer than we liked. Even a custom who's birthday it was asked what was going on. Sometimes they have bands play and etc. however when we got there, there was no music playing it was pretty quiet minus the chatter from employees and customers dining in. Towards the very end of our visit, more people came in and music from the speakers started to play. One thing I would like to include is that I did not enjoy flies flying around while we were eating. I don't understand how there are little flies in the Fall but it could be a small issue. The Food Listen guys my girlfriend ordered baby back ribs, shrimp and a baked potato and I ordered the Lobster mac & cheese. We both had a side of gumbo. Gumbo was excellent, nice, hot and very good. Whatever you expect from Gumbo they have it here. When you first come in you get nice warm complementary bread and you know that sweet butter you get at steak house? That's included too. & it is good. For an appetizer we order some BBQ wings & fries. These wings were Fresh and HOT! That first bite, you feel that steam go down your throat you know you in for a good time & those fries were nice and crunchy. I tried a little bit of her food for the context of this review and it was cooked to perfection. I can't dig too deep into it because I did not eat a lot but she very much so enjoyed her food! Lets get into the Lobster mac and cheese. I don't know what I was expecting. I was conflicted on what I should get. But I decided if I was gonna get something from Harbor House I got to go with the Lobster Mac and Cheese. & I have to say it hit different. If you are into Lobster Mac and Cheese. Then you may love it. It is some of the cheesiest mac and cheese I had all year. I could go without the lobster part but, I think that's my personal preference. Everything we ordered was good. The fountain drinks didn't taste watered down. They were fresh strong. Summery Every place I go to that I never been before start with 5 stars. I dropped it down 4 stars because the food is great. The restaurant has a good presentation. Service could be worked on. Customers should not hear any drama that goes on within the workplace but it was entertaining more or less. Came here for my best friends graduation dinner. Took a while to be seated (WITH reservations), but the service was great. I ordered the calamari as an appetizer. Came with like 8 fried calamari and some great tasting sauce. The crab cakes are definitely fresh! The chicken wings are SO GOOD! We had bbq and buffalo. I personally loved the bbq wings. I have really mixed feelings about this place just because anytime I walked by I always thought this was a seafood place. Two the main reason why I also never stopped in this place was because the outside looks very run down and just personally I'm not big on going to places that can't keep up with their outside well because it shows that you don't care for your business as much as you should. The only reason I went here was before the Lions game my buddy want to grab some food and everywhere else was a little packed and he said well let's check out this place. I was very iffy on it just because again didn't like the outside looking so run down and not kept up. Once you get inside it's a little bit different story it's definitely outdated which is not a bad thing but how dated in the way it didn't look very clean just because you almost have no real lighting going on inside it felt too dark and I'm not a big fan of that. I feel with some upgrades to this building they could probably become one of the new hotspots in downtown that would be worth checking out for a lot more people. The breakfast was delicious and I actually enjoyed that a lot and my buddy also enjoyed his. Most places can't get French toast right but they definitely did and use the right bread for it. The service here was great our server she was very polite. I will say they need to expand on their menu if they're gonna do breakfast and have a few more items since the choices were very limited but overall I still can't give this place more than three stars just because there are things they need to work on and I hope they do for the sake of making money. If they're trying to stay with a falling apart dive bar then I guess they're succeeding there but for me I won't be coming back just because to a certain extent I am about looks when it comes to restaurants. read more

After attending a concert at the nearby Detroit Music Hall Center last night, we went to Harbor House for the first time. We chose it because (i) it was a 2-minute walk from the concert venue, (ii) the menu looked great, and (iii) it was one of the only restaurants open until 11pm. (The kitchen is actually OPEN until 11pm and they serve until then, too). We are so glad we did! Situated in a "vintage" building, if you can't find something to eat here, you're just not hungry. From all kinds of seafood to ribs to steaks to sandwiches to specialty cocktails, high-end wines and brews, Harbor House has it all, and each bite is better than the one before. They also offer "mix-and-match" - for instance, a half-rack of ribs with 9 or 10 shrimp. All servings are HUGE! Did I mention the service? It was impeccable. I'm using a cane right now due to an accident, and we were solicitously seated at a table that caused me the least discomfort. Our server, Kate, was spot on, offering suggestions without being pushy and seeing to our every need without hovering. The restaurant is casual and old-fashioned but clean, as are the restrooms, and the waitstaff all cooperate with each other. At 10:30pm, there was an eclectic group of guests - families with little kids, couples on a date, friends catching up with each other - everyone seemed to be having fun without getting rowdy. The price point is more than fair, but please read the fine print that a 16% gratuity is automatically included on each check (if you care to tip more, that's entirely up to you). There is a gated, staffed, surface parking lot adjacent to the restaurant, and I-375 and I-75 are moments away and easily accessed. We look forward to our next visit to Harbor House. read more

Harbor House is pretty cool. I'm not huge on Seafood, but it's comparable to Sindbads on Jefferson. Nothing too fancy, but everything I had is pretty tasty. My little cousin had chicken tenders which he LOVED. They didn't give off Processed Tyson vibes, but freshly battered & freshly dropped. I love the Cod Sandwich and the Gumbo here - it's def my go to for that. I also always get a Caesar salad - which for the record has a TON of cheese so I prefer mine on the side, but most people like that. I've ordered door dash and dined in. No frills. I could tell that Gary possibly comes across a lot of demanding people and he proactively treats everyone as if they are the same but in reality it jus makes for a horrible dining experience. I wanted to leave a extra $20 per person tip on top of gratuity but couldn't justify doing so I did not. So when it's all said and done Gary saved me $120 which I appreciate...lol.
