With a full day in front of us we made our way to this cafe after reading some good reviews and we were not disappointed! It was a popular Sunday morning spot for the after church crowd so we waited a little but it was worth it. The staff did not get our order right but the corrected it quickly and were otherwise helpful. The atmosphere was cozy and there was a a kind of Retro Chic feel to the place - lots of exposed brick, etc. For breakfast we had the "Butter Me Up" biscuit - Bacon egg cheese - gluten free scone was nice. Also had the Vanilla Scone with Lemon Glaze and a Turmeric Chai Latte that had a kind of Gingerbread flavor as well. Sweet! Visited Harken Cafe twice, once for lunch and breakfast, while in Charleston. This was by far the best place we found for quick bite in a unique European like cafe. They offer a variety of freshly made salads, sandwiches, quiches, sweet loafs/cakes, pastries and hot/cold drinks. Orders are placed in take out fashion and you can eat in although seating is limited. For lunch visit, we ordered a salad/grain bowl which was comprised of a various types of cold salads - potatoes salads, greens, fruit, etc.. The salad was enough to share. We also ordered a slice of cake which was made of turmeric, sun flower seeds, dried berries and some other things and was topped with a sweet whipped crème frosting. Everything was delicious !!! Decided to visit again for breakfast and there was an assortment of pastries, breakfast sandwiches and other breads. A great place to checkout ! read more

After stopping by Meyer Vogl art gallery, we walked down to Harken Cafe. There were several people in line ahead of us but the line moved quickly. I ordered the GG bowl and a best friend cookie. The May salad options were all very tasty. My favorite was the broccoli one. I look forward to seeing what the new salads are next month. The cookie was great too. I snuck a couple of bites from my toddler, who also enjoyed it. This is the sister restaurant of The Harbinger, which is a favorite of mine, and it certainly does not disappoint. read more

My husband was looking for a gluten free bakery treat - and he found it at this delightful shop! We were so impressed with the selection of GF items. I don't recall the name of what I bought (not GF), but it was absolutely delicious and satisfying! It looked like a chocolate-covered cinnamon roll. When I started eating it, I was happily surprised by the layers of dough (sort of like monkey bread). Every bite was delicious and had enough sweetness to go along with it! The item was so large that it took me two days to finish it. We are so sorry that we didn't have time to visit this bakery multiple times. Stopped in for a sandwich and delicious hibiscus iced tea ~ and saw the enticing salads on display ~ and they pushed me over into trying one of them. The ingredients used at Harken are all healthy and fresh and so I had to try! The sandwich of the day was Turkey ~ thinly sliced ~ on Focaccia with mustard mayo, pickled sweet onions and Gruyère cheese. All wrapped up in a neat little "Harken package" I got it home and devoured the entire Sammie! I did sit on the outdoor side porch at Harken and ate my chickpea salad. It included all kinds of healthy greens, red peppers, onions, etc., in a light mustard--like dressing. Housed in a historic building Harken has a great vibe and many cozy little areas for enjoying a cup of coffee and just sit and chill. Worth a stop at Harken. You'll love the ambience! read more

Such a cute cafe! I could see myself spending lots of time here, people watching or reading. Food wise, we tried the quiche, the breakfast sandwich, and the brownie cookie. I think the cookie was called the Royal Crownie. The quiche was 9/10, super delicious. The breakfast sandwich was not my jam. It sounded really good, but the ricotta biscuit that it was made on was sweet. I was not a fan of the sweet and salty combo. The brownie cookie was super chewy, which grew on me, but was a bit chewier and harder than I'd like. I'd still recommend the cafe though, and would love to try some of their other offerings next time! Particularly the focaccia, which they were bringing out as we left. Still a solid 4. Food gets a 5 but service is a 3 and efficiency is a 2. They struggle with crowds. Despite the majority of the food being pre made, the cashier is responsible for plating and bagging your food and also ringing you up and they seem to always be on turtle time even with a line out the door. They should have someone plating the food and a separate cashier. Employees seem nice while also not being friendly or welcoming. Truly I keep coming back because the food is addicting. But don't come for service or if you're low on time. read more

Thought it was a great cafe! The yogurt and spiced latte was great- they also come in super cute mugs as well if you get them hot there. The seating area is quite limited on the weekend, and people left it quite dirty. So, the only thing I wish was that there was disinfectant or wipes available for the tables! Since this was a first visit I decided to keep it simple and ordered the Ricotta biscuit: Their "Signature morning pastry" with honey butter and compote and a cold brew. Coffee was good. The biscuit was cold and hard. More scone like and not what I personally prefer as a biscuit. I didn't have more than 2 bites. I got the "Green Thing" which is toast with Avocado, Sesame Tamari, Bulls Bay Flake Salt + Microgreens on Harken's Ciabatta. Both were so insanely delicious and so filling. Great coffee and quaint seating area! I had a lavender latte and their signature quiche. The latte was not sweet at all (just how I like it). If you are into sweeter lattes definitely be sure to let them know to add sugar or honey or whatever. The quiche was great! SO BIG. My only thing I found odd was I ordered food and they gave me a table number so I went and sat down. I assumed that meant they would bring both things I ordered. The iced mocha is a must order! They had lots of good looking treats and sandwiches as well. We came on a Saturday and it seemed way too crowded to be a WFH or study spot - so don't count on that. Overall: Quaint yet sophisticated, with delicious sweets and drinks. The good: Two of the three baked goods we got were outstanding. A chocolately "cinnamon roll" made with sweet potato was a surprise hit, with our favorite being a spring-like glazed orange loaf, filled with bits of apricot and pine nuts(?). They routinely change, and I can't remember their names. The treats themselves are large and definitely baked day-of, so there's no need to worry about the freshness. The decor speaks for itself - every corner of the restaurant blends together to create a warm, cozy feeling. There's an extreme attention to detail (in a good way), from major design choices like the orange espresso machine and exposed brick, to the tiniest of details like a twine bow on a book near the window. Service was friendly and prices are reasonable. The not-so-good: The matcha chocolate chip muffin was dry and didn't have enough chocolate chips in it. The aforementioned "cinnamon roll" we got would have been twice as good if it was heated up first (they wouldn't let us have it heated after we took a bite, understandably). Had to wait in the long line to pay for a coffee refill (half price). Limited seating is both a pro (exclusivity) and a con (we had to wait for seats inside). Wow! This cafe is adorable. I stopped in here for breakfast with my family, and we had some great food and chatted in the dining room for a bit. The interior has lots of brick, plants, and natural lighting. Every employee I encountered was extremely nice and cheerful. I really enjoyed the green and grains salad. I liked it because you mix and match from the the pre-prepared salad options displayed at the counter to create your own bowl. I choose the Brussels Sprout salad and the quinoa salad and both were delicious and filling. It also comes with bread and hummus that have great flavor. We intended to get here for breakfast but missed it by a few minutes. So if you want breakfast food, make sure you get there before 11am! read more

It was hard to find a place for a light bite in Charleston but Harken Cafe fit the bill Harken is an adorable little coffee/tea shop with some food as well. It totally fits the historic Charleston vibe with antiques and a rustic look. Besides fancy coffee and tea, there are a bunch of breakfast items, sweets, and bread like items. I stopped in for lunch and the menu seemed pretty limited. There are some baguette sandwiches, and pre-made salads. I ordered the trio, which comes with three small salad portions and a piece of baguette. I enjoyed the salads, although the Caesar had a bit to much dressing. Order at the counter and they will call your number. I think this place can get very busy but I had no issues for a late lunch during the summer. Such a pleasure to sit inside Harken with the lovely decor! Such a nice change from S FL. I know it's a small operation but would live to see some more lunch options. read more

This is an adorable cafe! I'd definitely recommend grabbing a coffee here and enjoying a walk downtown! If you prefer to sit in the cafe there's plenty of room for that as well! I absolutely loved the "GG Bowl" which was a collection of their cold salads (any ones you want) with some hummus and focaccia. I was amazed to see that all of the pottery they use (mugs, bowls, etc) are East Fork (I'm a big fan)! They have plenty of tables indoor and nice little outdoor tables in the alley patio! This place was SO welcome after going on a cruise for 5 days!!! Great coffee, great food and a biscuit that can be best described as a religious experience! Seriously. And the Great Dane was a perfect dessert, and pairing with their amazing lattes! If I have to be picky, parking can be a pain, and the place is little and wouldn't accommodate a very big party. We ordered and americano and a cold brew to drink. Some places make americanos too bitter, burnt, it too watery. I drink mine black and this was balanced! The cold brew was good too for the hot and humid day. Out of the pastries, the chocolate chip bestie violins hit the spot! Big chunks of chocolate that melt in your mouth. We ordered two!
