I liked this place initially. We ended up here because the restaurant that we originally had reservations, and planned going to, didn't work out. But, that's a post and a review for another day. This place was close and it seemed to have decent offerings. Granted, had we had more time to look, we might not have come here. Our waitress Shaquanna was awesome. She came over right after we got seated. She had her A-game on. Attentive, funny and very knowledgeable. When Jayson was vacillating between two options for dinner, she chimed in with her choice, and he went with it. And boy was she spot on. Jayson LOVED his short rib. The biggest problem for me was this: I'm a huge oyster lover. I've been on this kick for awhile, and pretty much many of our restaurant choices are steered around making sure they are an option. When we got ours, Jayson didn't like the way his were smelling. He thought they seemed less than fresh, and sent them back. Shaquanna got him new ones. The issue though is that they really didn't seem fresh at all. Not the ones I had, and not the ones he got the second time. Worse, there was a GIANT HAIR across mine. (See the photo.) However, I chose not to say anything for two reasons. One, Jayson had just send his back, and I hadn't looked at mine yet. I felt it might seem fishy (no pun intended) if I suddenly turned around and mentioned this. The real reason I didn't say anything is that we just walked out of a restaurant 15 minutes earlier that turned out to be all wrong, and they were incredibly unpleasant. So, we already had an off moment on date night. Two weeks earlier, we went out to brunch on a rare Sunday off for Jayson, and it went from great to dreadful after we discovered a giant hair on my burger. We were about to see a special advance screening of "A Star Is Born." We were having a lovely day. And, this was his only day off for this week. The last thing I wanted to do was make a scene or have something negative looming over date night. I weighed the pros and cons of saying anything, and I made the decision not to say anything. Topping it off, the oysters just tasted nasty. (I tried to eat the others, without the hair). They weren't properly cleaned. I was getting bits of shell in my mouth. They were borderline disgusting. And, if we weren't on our way to a movie and on our weekly date night (a 14 year tradition), I would have asked to have them taken off. The only other word that comes to mind is VILE. For an entree I ordered the burger special, without the bun. It was delicious. Really, as burgers go, this was exceptional. Cooked to perfection. And seasoned right. However, the lingering yuckiness of the oysters in my mouth that kept me from fully enjoying it. Jayson ordered the short rib, which Shaquanna recommended. Served with mashed potatoes, sautéed spinach and a veal bordelaise sauce, it looked and smelled AH-MAZING. Jayson was in heaven. He loved it. He absolutely loved it, saying the rib was mouthwatering. And he's a pretty picky eater to please. I loved the area this restaurant is in. We are definitely going to have some more date nights up that way. Unfortunately, I don't see going back to the HT. Jayson gave them a better review, but that's because I only just now showed him the photo of the hair in my oysters. read more

I decided to go to Harlem Tavern tonight. Although I live in Harlem, this is my first time going there. I was surprised for a Friday night that it wasn't as crowded as I expected it to be. I ordered a drink called Gonna Clock Out which wasn't bad and two appetizers, which were the sweet chili wings and the mac & cheese. The wings were lukewarm and overcooked actually hard to bite into and the mac & cheese was hot but flavorless and they use shells which is not my preference for mac & cheese. A little salt goes a long way to give food flavor, which I guess they don't realize. I'm not sure if I would write them off totally. I might go back and try something else. The chicken tenders were not good at all. I don't know if they were Tyson or even Weaver. It was not good whatsoever. My drink was pure sugar. The piña colada was so sweet ; not even real coconut milk or pineapple juice. Slicing a real chicken breast to have a real chicken tender; I'm guessing is too much work. Having a real bartender that mixed drinks with fresh ingredients; I'm guessing it's too much. The service was good. We had a big party and Ginger was attentive. I really haven't had an experience this bad in a very long time. The food and service were both just bad. We started off with two appetizers: The Harlem Sliders and the Chicken Fingers. The sliders were pretty fast, but the chicken fingers clearly came frozen. It was similar to chicken tenders you might get out of the frozen section at a grocery store. Disgusting. For the main meal, I ordered the buffalo chicken wrap. It looked pretty good, but looks can be receiving. I've never had a buffalo chicken wrap that was actually disgusting. The chicken was not crispy, and there was a weird sweet aftertaste. I even asked for ranch but definitely just got an aioli of some sort. The fries were probably the best part of my meal...after the drinks. I order the "King of the South" which was actually delicious and packed a punch. The servers were not friendly, neither was the host. One of the servers even got an attitude with me. I would never come back to this establishment, and I love finding new places to eat. I've came to this establishment a couple of times and the service and food has always been lovely. The I usually order the free range chicken and it is always juicy and tender, I can never go wrong with it. However yesterday I came to watch the soccer games and I witnessed the most beautiful interaction. The hostess there is always beautiful anyone can see that. She is smiling and laughing with costumers and seeing her outside in the heat with a smile just made it more welcoming. There was a very old man who walked in and I watching this young lady spend time to take care of him. Not briefly checking in but crouching beside him and taking her time to understand him. This is why I will continue to come back. The level of care and respect the staff puts towards their clientele is amazing. For that this place is a 10/10 must try for the service alone. read more

Came here two weeks ago for Saturday brunch. Although there were many people there for outdoor dining the wait wasn't long at all. I came here with my best friend and son and had the perfect dining experience. I seen their manager go around to make sure each table was in adherence with the COVID-19 dining regulations( which really set me at ease.) The food was delicious. I had the shrimp and grits and although I only had about three shrimps it was wonderful. The fried calamari was really good as well. I can't quite place the specific genre of music they cater to so I will say that they basically played a little bit of everything which is good if you're out with a diverse crowd. Okay so I actually really love it here but I don't know for some reason, tonight when I visited and sat in for outdoor eats, my food was not great. I usually get calamari which is banging, however, I ordered the FISH TACOS and they were not good. My fish didn't taste cooked enough. I am very disappointed with my stay this time. Not as great as I expected it to be. I've heard a lot of great things about Harlem Tavern and I must say, I had high expectations but they just didn't meet them during my experience. Cons: - Service is somewhat lacking. Our server seemed to be in some sort of a rush. As soon as he came over to introduce himself, he was ready to take our food order, forget drinks. When we asked for some more time, he gave us 2 minutes; we asked for more time, he came back within another 2 minutes. The place wasn't packed so I don't know why he was so eager. Once our order was placed, we had a hard time locating him for simple things such as water refills, straws, a side of sauce. Quite annoying. - Food is mediocre. I ordered the Crispy wings with chili sesame glaze and a side of Truffle Parmesan fries. The wings were definitely crispy but as far as taste, they were no different than wings from Buffalo Wild Wings. The fries were also very greasy and somewhat bland. Granted, I have not tried their other menu items, what I had does not entice me. Overall, my experience wasn't amazing. Came here on a Saturday afternoon to watch football and ended up staying here for HOURS! I love everything about this place. Well, almost everything. I got there a little after 3pm so I was able to catch brunch. I settled for ordering the cornflake crusted French toast and I was disappointed. It was super dry and almost flavorless. What made up for it was the mimosa that came along with it! The drinks at this place are SO good! I ordered several different drinks (don't judge me) while there and I enjoyed them ALL! Oh, and they are super strong so know your limit! The vibe here is dope! When I arrived, there was a live band playing which was nice. They left a little after 4pm, then it was game time! They have several tv's all around so you can view the game from almost every table. This place gets really loud so if you don't like loud noise, then this is not the place for you. The service was great! Our waitress was very attentive and pleasant the entire time. She didn't make us feel rushed at all which was nice. They have several bathrooms and they are all monitored and clean. There's a bathroom attendant there so make sure you take a few singles with you so you can leave her a tip. I came here for brunch in the summer time--I think it was one of the hottest days and we sat outside. The jazz music was good but a bit too loud. I ordered the HT omelet with mushrooms and another lady ordered an omelet with bacon. The order got mixed up--mine ended up with bacon and the other lady got ham. Luckily, I eat bacon but that could have been a big problem if you don't. The food was okay--I can't speak on their dinner and the service was okay, nothing memorable. Came here for MLK day with a party of eight and didn't have the best experience with the hostess. When telling her how big my party was she seemed annoyed and assured me it would be a long wait. They were busy but not ridiculous. She initially didn't even give me a time estimate until I asked. I was told 45 mins to an hour. Regardless of the wait I gave my information and was told I would receive a text. 15 mins later I received a text message that stated I had 15 minutes to return to the restaurant or I'd lose my spot. Luckily, I bc was close my grabbing drinks and was able to return on time despite the inaccurate indication of wait time. The restaurant is pretty big with an outdoor space (it's covered and heated in the winter) and the tables are set far enough apart that you won't feel cramped or like the table next to you is listening in to your conversation. The wait and bar staff are both friendly and attentive. The food and portion-sizes are pretty good for the price. The drinks aren't heavy pours but you don't feel like you're just drinking juice. It's just fine When talking to folks in the area, it seemed like Harlem Tavern would be some culinary mecca. Unfortunately, it did not meet up to that hype. Do not get me wrong, I had a decent dining experience at Harlem Tavern, but there was not anything super memorable with my visit. The Tavern has a very large and open dining area. There is a wide assortment of dishes and (more importantly) beers, from southern style food to typical American food. During my visit, I had the seafood gumbo and the mussels served with white wine sauce. I will warn you; the sauce that is served with the mussels is very garlicky and buttery. However, it was not a big deal to me because I like garlicky and buttery sauces. During our visit, the service was very friendly and prompt, so no complaints with that. read more

There was a table of 5 that sat behind us a good 5-10 minutes after us and there orders were taken first. Their waitress told us we weren't her table and would find our waitress. Extremely inappropriate. She also continuously made faces/popped her eyeballs out [deer in the headlights]; it was truly odd. FOOD Their brunch menu kind of limited, in my opinion. It was okay. It was good but nothing great. I ordered chicken and waffles and it was good, but the chicken was definitely better than the waffle. So based off all of my visits here......you have to try the mac and cheese.......the cajun burger........and the Henny punch......if you get the henny punch buy the carft it is worth it......also I prefer going on nice days for the outdoor seating.....inside seems cramped and loud .....and please remember this is a bar/pub......tavern......not the fine dining of Harlem..... read more

4/9/23: I didn't realize I came here 10 years ago and gave this place a good review and decided to revisit. Fast forward to 2023. I decided to come here for dinner on a Sunday. We were seated immediately and it took sometime before someone came to take our orders. I noticed the cups on the table were dirty. They were changed and filled promptly. When we were finally able to place our orders, the waitress tells us that she was sent to our table to take our orders because the other waitress who was assigned to our section started two days ago and that this isn't even her section to work. I didn't need to know that and she could have chosen her words differently. We decided to ask her how long has she been working there for and she told us. Maybe she didn't like that she was asked this. Once we placed our orders, it just felt like were rushed and the etiquette was not there. When we received our food, she didn't check on us to see how we doing, however other waiters checked in on us. She gave us the check without even asking if we needed anything else. And it took her sometime to come back to collect the check. Maybe she knew she didn't give us good service. The music was good (r&b, hip-hop, rap). The buffalo wings were good. Barbeque Chicken Wrap was good. Short Ribs Mac and Cheese. Ribs were dr-ai. (Dry). Dry like a hot desert. Usually I like to go back to places where I receive good service. I will not returning back to Harlem Tavern. Nice space, good chill spot, but service is a NO. read more

I've been going to Harlem Tavern for the past few years and I would say that it is a solid spot in Harlem. It's a lively place that is perfect to visit during their superbowl parties, game days, jazz brunches, happy hours, and pretty much any other night of the week. My favorite part about HT is the patio which is opened year round. In the colder months it's heated and covered & in the warmer months it's a huge open seating space. It's great for groups as they have beer hall tables that can accommodate quite a few people at once. The inside of HT has more of a sports bar vibe - there is a huge bar that spans the width of the restaurant and some high tables as well. They have a ton of huge TVs inside and a projector screen outside. The service can be a bit slow if they are super packed (of course) and the food is inconsistent - I have found it to be sometimes great and sometimes average. In terms of their food I love their quesadillas, burgers, and the biscuits & eggs for brunch. read more
