Last week, we were invited to join some friends for an evening of good food and conversation. Our reservation was set and with much enthusiasm we prepared for our first visit to Harry & Izzy's downtown location. I tirelessly poured over the menu, for the next week and settled on the Dry Aged Ribeye Izzy style, red mash, and the slab bacon appetizer. The appetizer was ok. I found the meat to be quite salty, and was not at all impressed with the root beer sauce. Then came the main course , As I stated above, I ordered the Dry Aged Ribeye , Cooked Medium , Izzy Style and the red mash. The Izzy style option is quite delicious. The pepper crusted season goes quite well with the orange brandy butter sauce.. My steak itself however, was terrible. It was cooked a very dry well done. The sauce, in all its glory, couldn't even improve it. The red mash, they were wonderful! Highlight of my meal! Our waiter, Luis, was inattentive and distant. Maybe he was distracted. Maybe he didn't care. We were envious of the other patrons around us with attentive, engaged wait staffs for sure. 1/10 . Would not recommend. read more

One of our favorites in Indy. I personally prefer it over St. Elmo's because you get more bang for your buck and the food is just as good! If you're a salad fan, their kale salad is one of my all time favorites. Salmon is always delicious and the steak is good, but I don't order red meat often. We've been going to Harry and Izzy's a few times since moving to Indiana and I must say it's our favorite spot. We like to sit at the bar and Lionel and Mo are the most welcoming and efficient servers that not only remember you, but remember your drink and dinner order! That's so rare these days. Went here to enjoy a good meal for my husband and I's 4 year anniversary. We got the total opposite. Waiter was horrible. Another waiter had to find our waiter 3 different times for us. We waited over 15 minutes for our bill. Drinks sat empty. Ceaser salad taste like unwashed lettuce, no flavor at all. Green beans were tough to eat. French fries were cold and saturated in oil. All I can say is wow! Walked into this famous restaurant and very cool bar with my local work colleagues and was so pleasantly surprised with firstly the witty and incredibly pleasant staff. First time and Indianapolis, wanted to try a place that was more pricey and this place was it. The waiter, Austin, was amazing. He knew everything about the menu and was very kind about giving recommendations. The famous shrimp cocktail packs a punch with the heavy amount of horseradish, though to many brings a pleasant feeling to the mouth similar to a lot of wasabi. The steak was definitely prime grade and extremely delicious. Out of my experience, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the crab beignets. Those were battered and light and soft similar to a tempura texture, and the sauce on the side was amazing. This place is worth a try for sure! read more

Wow! What a wonderful lunch. My husband and I like to try new restaurants while on trips and our most recent trip to Indianapolis includes lunch at Harry & Izzy's. My husband had the Tagliatelle with chicken. It was fresh, creamy, and he liked the lemon zest on top. I ordered the three course meal special. My meal included 2 sliders (I chose filet and shrimp po boy), toasted ravioli, and creme brulee. Every course was delicious but the sliders were especially delicious. My wife and I went for our anniversary. Because I had used OpenTable for a reservation, they knew it was a special occasion and had a signed anniversary card waiting on the table for us. That helped readjust our mood, as we had to wait around fifteen minutes past our reservation time to get our table. The restaurant was very busy due to a convention in the area. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. We ordered the famous shrimp cocktail. It was not great. It had a fishy taste to the shrimp, even through the immensely powerful cocktail sauce. However, my wife and I just returned from a trip to coastal South Carolina and so we thought we had just become spoiled from the super fresh seafood available there. My wife got her steak Oscar-style. This involves crab meat on the cut. My wife noticed again an overly fishy taste to the crab. Once we had completed our meal, we were offered a free desert for our anniversary. We ordered the bread pudding. We were told it would take around twenty minutes to cook. This was fine. It took longer than expected and, to make matters worse, a server brought the desert out to the area where our table was, looked around confused as to which table was supposed to get the food, and then retreated to the kitchen. Ten more minutes came and went before our actual server told us that she talked to the other server and knew he messed up. Finally, and while we can't prove anything, since eating there last evening, my wife has been sick from apparent food poisoning. Again, we don't know for sure. But we know how the seafood tasted and we know how sick she got. Overall it wasn't a terrible night, but it certainly wasn't a perfect anniversary dinner. read more

Don't forget to eat your tentacles! I don't know if this place is associated with St. Elmo's or not. I would assume so because they were serving some items from their menu like the infamous shrimp cocktail. For those of you that aren't familiar with St. Elmo's or Harry and Izzy's... Bookmark both now. Make it a point to go if you're in Indianapolis. I sat at the bar and had a few vinos along with a plate of lightly breaded calamari and fettuccine Alfredo. I know, the worst thing on the menu. Dang it was really good. The calamari was the best I've had in a long time. The kick was the chipotle dipping sauce. Oh man, I could have taken a bath in the stuff. I couldn't get enough! The pasta was topped with succulent shrimp. It was a healthy topping like 12 of them. Gotta say I probably ate a third and had to push the plate away. I'm not a waster so had to take the rest of it back to the hotel for a second attempt later that night. I dropped in for lunch a few hours before attending the nightmare that was Game 4 of the Knicks vs. Pacers series. This place could be described as a classy, yet approachable, American eatery; that's not a very easy atmosphere to pull off. I sat at the circular shaped bar and I appreciate that both bartenders introduced themselves to me. Allie was really pretty and pointed out when I had a little horseradish on my face. Said she was looking out for me if a cute girl sat next to me. Two minutes later, a 40 year old business guy took the adjacent seat. Anyway, the other bartender told me they had a $20 pre-fixed lunch menu. I could pick one of two entrees and I could also pick two items between two apps, two salads, and two desserts. I chose the half prime rib sandwich with a side of cole slaw, along with the famous St. Elmo's shrimp cocktail and a romaine hearts salad. The salad was nice, romaine with candied walnuts, a few veggies, and a champagne vinaigrette. As far as the shrimp go, I never expected that cocktail sauce to taste so hot! That was some intense horseradish! But I was impressed how large the shrimps were, I certainly didn't get skimped on that. The sandwich consisted of thinly sliced prime rib with an onion jam, white cheddar, and a side of horseradish sauce all on an onion roll with a cup of warm jus for dipping. The meat was moist and the horseradish added just the right amount of kick. I barely tasted the onion or cheese though. And I also liked the slaw, which was made with mayo, vinegar, and celery seed. Oh, I almost forgot. I added a fried chicken slider for another five bucks. Sesame bun, dill pickle, garlic aioli and a thick, crispy, juicy piece of fried chicken. Tremendous. It was like an upscale version of Chick-Fil-A! And the whole meal only cost me about $35, including tip. If I did return to Indianapolis, I'd certainly consider returning. This place is a little more casual (jeans) but very trendy and a great vibe. Atmosphere - the restaurant is 3 levels - When you walk in you are greated by the host. The border of the restaurant is the first floor. The second floor (center of the restaurant has a large circular bar in the middle. This bar had a great crowd. The third floor is in the back of teh restaurant (looking down on the second (bar area) floor). Food - Appetizers - I purchased the Shrimp Cocktail - It was yummy and spicy (Horseradish). I ordere teh bone in NY Strip Steak - cook to perfection. I have eaten at many great steak joints across the country and this was the first time I had a bone in NY Strip - It was very good - but I am still a Ribeye fan Cost - Well - it is expensive as you might expect. The meal (appetizer, food, and drinks) was around $80 for myself (I jumped out of a tree because I was having fun :-) ). Fun location, sister restaurant to St Elmos, good service. Went to dinner with hubby and the 360 peeps. They had tried the shrimp cocktail before and said it was a must do. The waiter - Adrian - said it was something you should do if you liked shrimp and to cry. I was so so on the idea, but decided to do it. Can't say i would recommend it. The horseradish is just too overpowering and doesn't so anything for the taste of the sauce. We also had to do the spicy meatballs bacause of all the other reviews here. Can't say i'd do that again either. Tasty - but not $8 worth. I knew i needed something semi healthy so i went with the Garbage Salad - it has italian meats, cheese, hearts of palm, and more. The dressing called the green goddess (yes scary name) was pretty good with the combo of items in the salad - alone - anh. Hubby did the fish and chips - gigantic peice of fish, good breading. The others at the table went with the Steak Burger - it was huge, came with au ju sauce and was super thinly sliced- very tasty And the grilled chicken meal - was tasty. Definitely do it again. I really wanted to try the famous shrimp cocktail at St. Elmo's but never got a chance to swing by for dinner (and it's not open for lunch). So I went to Harry & Izzy's next door and to my surprise, it's run by the same people as St. Elmo's! AND, they serve up the same shrimp cocktail - Score! The lunch crowd wasn't too dressy so I didn't feel too out of place as I was on my way to the airport. The decor is classy rat pack type feel. I opted for the lunch feature which is $20 - you can choose 3 of the 4 items - starter, salad, entree and dessert. I am not a sweets fan so I went with the shrimp cocktail, Romaine Hearts salad and the half prime beef sandwich with the soup of the day. I'd say that's a pretty good deal and sampling of the menu for $20! The famous St. Elmo shrimp cocktail lived up to its fame, it is sinus clearing. Freshly grated horseradish on top of the 3 jumbo poached shrimp - it was divine. I can't go back to regular shrimp cocktails anymore! The romain hearts salad was very good too - julienned apples, bleu cheese, candied walnuts & champagne rosemary vinaigrette. I loved the light and refreshing taste of this salad. The half prime rib sandwich is on a onion bun - not my favourite as I didn't find it added to the sandwich. The prime rib was a little dry - I've definitely had better. So the sandwich was disappointing. And the soup of the day was some vegetable soup - very salty, I didn't go past 2 sips. But a very filling lunch meal. Food service was fairly prompt and my server was very attentive. The hostess was okay, she could work on being less snooty. But otherwise, nice lunch place. Not sure if I'd splurge on a steak here, as I'd rather go to St. Elmo's and see what the hypes about. Oh and if you don't have time, there's a Harry & Izzy's at the Indy Airport in the terminal. I have been here three times and have enjoyed every meal. It has an upscale decor with a steakhouse feel. The waitstaff is excellent. The cocktails are great. The prices are average for a quality steakhouse. This visit was not planned. I had reservations at St. Elmo, but when we arrived we were informed that one of air conditioning units was out so they had to close part of the restaurant due to the heat. It was 95 degrees outside!! They offered us immediate seating at Harry & Izzy's (two doors down the street) along with a complimentary shrimp cocktail for the inconvenience. We accepted knowing they these two restaurants share the same kitchen. The shrimp cocktail is famous for the overpowering, sinus clearing horseradish sauce. One small taste will make your nose tingle. Parking is easy if you know the area. Park under Circle Centre Mall, bottom level off to the left near the escalator. It will take you up to the back entrance of the restaurant right to the Maitre'D. My parking bill was $1.50 for two hours. If you are in Indy looking to have a good steak dinner and don't want to visit a chain Harr & Izzy's or St. Elmo are good bets for a quality piece of beef. read more

Thanks to the great Indianapolis Yelpers I headed to H&I for an early dinner on my free night while visiting on business. I had a great 2 top by the window on the lower lever of the bar area. There is a huge chalkboard-wall in the bar with live scores of all the MLB games - nice perk! The downside was that the area was not busy and the wait staff line up on the steps to the bar and watch over the diners below - half a point deduction for feeling watched. I started with the Hearts of Romaine salad. Well balanced dressing with plenty of blue cheese crumbles and candied nuts (small tidbits to small to taste but just generally nutty) The corn bisque called my name and oh was I glad! Thin in texture, but amazingly complex with green onion, white onion, carrot, celery, and green pepper all micro diced with roasted kernels of sweet corn. I am glad that I had just a cup... it was soooo hearty and filling! I couldn't see one person tackling the shrimp cocktail I saw delivered to the next table so I went for the baked ravioli instead. Three plump and crispy pillows were floating in a sea of sweet tomato sauce with a slight vinegar kick. Stuffed beyond words, I looked at my watch to see if was only 3 pm stomach time (I live in Seattle afterall) so I had my delightful waitress pack up a fruit and cheese platter to go. Aged Parmesan, strong white cheddar, mild yellow cheddar, and thumb sized cylinders of herb coats cheese and what I think was a goat's milk ricotta filled half the container. Berries, grapes and melons filled the other half. In the middle were 6 small (silver dollar size) crouton crisp slices of bread. Nowhere near enough to fully enjoy the soft cheese and berry combinations let alone the hard cheese (half point deduction since the cheese was sooo awesome). read more

I met some friends recently for a late dinner at Harry & Izzy's. We decided to do appetizers and salads as no one was in the mood for a big meal. So I guess I'll have to go back sometime for a more complete review! Although I had never been to Harry & Izzy's, I had an idea I would like it. It's owned by the same people who own St. Elmo Steakhouse and I've always been a big St. Elmo fan. Harry & Izzy's has the same classy feel as St. Elmo, yet is more comfortable and relaxed. They also feature the famous St. Elmo shrimp cocktail: jumbo shrimp with a blow-your-head-off, painfully delicious sauce. This really brings meaning to "hurts so good". The great thing about a horseradish burn is that it's over quick and your taste buds are restored to enjoy the next bite. Just as good as the shrimp cocktail, but with more subtle flavors is the Beef Carpaccio appetizer. For those of you not familiar, carpaccio is paper thin sliced raw beef with a mustard sauce. Harry & Izzy's dresses theirs with capers and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. It's no surprise that the owners of the best steakhouse (IMO) in the city do raw beef just as well as cooked. It's just plain delicious and if you've never had carpaccio before this is a great place to try it. The Seared Tuna appetizer is quite good, but it doesn't really stand out from similar dishes at other quality restaurants. It's lightly seared, covered with sesame seeds and served with a spicy sauce. What does stand out about it though is the accompanying seaweed salad. It's good enough to stand alone, but pairs well with the tuna. I wanted to love the Garbage Salad just as much as the appetizers, but I couldn't. With shrimp, Italian meats, cheese, artichokes, hearts of palm and celery should have been bursting with flavor, but the taste was rather flat. I did enjoy the Wedge Salad, but honestly it's pretty hard to screw that one up and I happen to be partial to the wedge to begin with. It's exactly as a wedge should be, crisp and crunchy with blue cheese and bacon and I'd probably order it again. My friends ordered the Oven Roasted Beet Salad which has beets (duh), oranges, goat cheese and walnuts over mesclun greens in a tarragon vinaigrette. They love, love, loved it but I hate, hate, hate beets so my opinion really doesn't mater here. I'll just say it's a great salad for beet lovers (shudder). For excellent food, great service and a classy atmosphere, I give Harry & Izzy's an overall rating of 4.0. read more

So, despite the fact that I've lived in Indianapolis for 16 years now, and do really enjoy a good dinner out this was my first visit to Harry & Izzy's. I think my perception was always that the target crowd was conference attendees and those conducting business over dinner. Well, we were here for a recruiting dinner on a mid-week evening, so I guess we did fit the working dinner part of my assumption! The restaurant was full, but we were seated right on time for our reservation. Since this was my first visit, I had to try the famous shrimp cocktail. The fresh horseradish definitely makes a fabulous cocktail sauce! The $17.95 price tag is hefty, but I kind of saw it as an investment in a cultural experience (nice rationalization isn't it?). I then had a strip steak prepared Izzy style which was really delicious! The steak was tender, and cooked to a perfect medium rare. I did appreciate that a side is included with the steaks; one of my pet peeves is paying $50 for a steak and then being charged extra for a potato or some vegetables. I opted for the sautéed green beans which were prepared with red peppers and onions - quite tasty! I didn't try any of the desserts since I was in a meat coma from the steak, but it was a good meat coma, so no complaints! It is very easy to finish with a bill around $100/person for dinner, which is about the same as other high end steak houses. If you are looking to splurge on a really good steak though, this is a good option. Service was good, but a little confused at times. We had two servers even though we were a very small group. There were times where they both thought the other had already taken care of something, like taking appetizer orders, and we had to flag someone down. It is also very loud in the restaurant - expect to yell and lean in to places orders and have conversations if the restaurant is full! read more

My boyfriend and I decided on Harry and Izzy's to celebrate our 6 monthiversary. It was my first time there, so I oohed and ahhed at the romantic atmosphere of the upper seating when we were seated for our early (5:15p) reservation. Both of us already knew exactly what we wanted before arriving (online menus are amazing - picky eaters unite!). However, the waitress decided to read what seemed like the entire menu to us. This included reading the Devour Downtown menu and listing the daily specials to include what they were cooked/seasoned with. This took what seemed like forever. I don't know how the poor girl didn't get caught in her words or lose her breath! First to arrive was my romaine hearts salad with the Gorgonzola on the side. I think there was more Gorgonzola than there was salad! Next comes the best part: filet mignon with mashed red potatoes and sautéed green beans. I had to send my filet back to be cooked more (ordered medium well, came medium), otherwise the meal was amazing. My boyfriend enjoyed his pepperoni pizza (remember, picky eaters!) as well. By this time, the room had filled up and was no longer the calm, romantic atmosphere I had observed prior. We delightfully finished off our meal with H&I's signature brownie. We received a bowl of extra ice cream after asking for two scoops on the brownie per a Yelper's advice. It was a $2.50 up charge, but worth it. Overall giving Harry and Izzy's a four star review. The food was good, but the prices won't have me coming back again without it being a special occasion. The servers were either overly attentive or nowhere to be found when we actually needed them, depending on how busy they were. read more

In the heart of downtown Indianapolis lives the famous Harry & Izzy's. Harry & Izzy's is my go to spot for drinks and a good quiet dinner. This steak house is a local favorite. Of course they specialize in steaks, awesome cocktails and top notch service. We've had everything on the menu and you really can't go wrong. Our go to is the filet sliders, Brussels sprouts and a wedge salad. Soooooo Delicious. Anytime I come home to visit we MUST stop by! We are in town to enjoy GenCon, but Sunday night we are left with minimal dinner options besides a cheap burger and milkshake. After checking OpenTable, my husband and I decided on Harry & Izzy's for a delicious, final dinner of our vacation. I am so happy that we did! Upon arrival, we were immediately seated with Heather, our server. Heather promptly greeted us and was impeccable in her service and recommendations. She was friendly, helpful, and an absolute delight. Summer was also in the section, and she was fantastic. All of the staff seemed like they knew what they were doing, and more importantly, enjoyed doing it. I would be so proud to have them both working for me. My husband and I each enjoyed their bourbon selection, and chose steak and a steak burger respectively. My ribeye was absolutely superb, if not the best steak I've ever had. It was cooked to perfection and seasoned wonderfully. Upon Heather's recommendation, we had the bread pudding for dessert. I can't even begin to tell you how good this dish is to enjoy. It's unbelievable. They cook it to order in cask iron so it takes about 15 mins after ordering. They bring this mountain of dessert to the table and finish it with a pour of Woodford Reserve. 10/10. Though pricier than a cheap place down the street, they have reasonable options and everything is 100% quality for the price.
