I didn't even come here for the steakhouse part, the dessert room is the real experience. First of all, the vibe is everything. It's dark, cozy, and super intimate. You're seated in these small, semi-private rooms with an open doorway, so you can kind of see other people, but it still feels secluded and tucked away. I honestly loved that setup. WOW! What an experience the dessert room at Berns is! Upon entering they have these little cubbies which in fact are actual barrels converted into personal booths! They also have the champagne room area that has a phone and speaker at each table. Very unique and one of a kind experience. The lighting is dark, there are secluded "booths" with walls up so you can't exactly see/hear the people seated in parties around you. It's a very awesome experience, where you get privacy and the ambiance of dark lighting, cool piano playing... there's a phone booth with numbers if you want to change the music style, or you can opt in for their live pianist and even call in to request a song. When looking at reservations for Bern's Steak House, I didn't realize you had to book at least a couple of months in advance -- if not three months to secure a table during peak dinner hours. When that fell out of reality, we opted to at least reserve a table at the Harry Waugh Dessert Room part of Bern's, and it was glorious. We had a fantastic experience enjoying dessert and after-dinner drinks to celebrate my wife's birthday. The lighting is warm. The seating areas are gorgeous private booths made from old wine casks, which I didn't realize, but makes the ambiance and interior cool. The designs of the booths ensure intimate and separate quiet conversation with just your party, without hearing others nearby or intrusions. Each booth also has working telephones (if I am correct) if you need to summon service right away or engage in local calls (I think). The cocktails are lovely. I went for the Bless Your Heart, Peaches drink that consisted of. Rittenhouse Bern's select rye, Michter's bourbon, peach cobbler cordial, crumble, and orange. I enjoyed it even though it didn't complement the Peanut Butter Truffle dessert, but I didn't care. As for the Peanut Butter Truffle, it was glorious and good, good and glorious. Comprising Oreo brownie, crunchy peanut butter, peanut butter mousse, caramel milk chocolate mousse, and peanut butter fudge swirl ice cream, the dessert was so decadent, creamy, and full of life. I could have ordered a whole batch of us, brought it to my hotel room, and eaten it in the nude without any shame. If you haven't had the opportunity to check out the Harry Waugh Dessert Room, you need to. There is a lot of history and heritage behind the structure of the room. It feels like a time capsule, but a wonderful one that makes you feel like you are in for a treat -- which you are -- when you frequent. We've been here a few times and just came again for our anniversary. They did bring out a birthday ice cream for our anniversary - it was a nice touch but was just okay. I tried the trilogy - the carrot cake like one was just okay but I wouldn't order again. The banana cheese pie was good, but the citrus cheesecake - the hint of citrus added a brightness that was so good. My husband tried the Dutch apple pie, and that was so incredible. Unique in the world. It's much easier to get a reservation to the dessert room than it is at Bern's and a great option for a little magic on a normal day. You have the option of picking different music through a little jukebox type thing on the wall or you can just turn it off if you want some quiet. The tables are all in their own walled alcoves, so you have a lot of privacy and can even choose your own music which is so fun! There is also a phone at each table to call the live pianist and request a song which made it feel extra special. Fabulous! I wish we'd read the menus more thoroughly in the past! As far as the food... I always recommend the chateaubriand but any cut is fabulous. The sides are classic and you can ask for extras. Don't skip the dessert room. It is private, quiet, and you will find some original offerings as well as fun seasonal choices. The icecream is apparently where it's at because it completely blew me away. They make their icecream in house and there is an entire page dedicated to flavors and toppings so I should've known better. He took our cafe con leche order and our coffees arrived within minutes. The Cafe Con Leche at Berns is my favorite anywhere, so we never go without ordering it!!!! Next we had the Pumpkin Bread Pudding, with bourbon pecan praline sauce and caramel ice cream. Oh my GOODNESS. This was far and above our favorite of the evening. The sauce was next level and you could definitely taste the bourbon without it being boozy, which was perfection! Next, we had the banana tres leches. Reservations for only the Harry Waugh Dessert room? Surely you jest. And don't call me Shirley. The Harry Waugh Dessert room was created in 1985. The story goes, Bern met up with Waugh at his crib in London. The two of them retired to the drawing room for a snifter of brandy and dessert. Bern was like, we should make a dessert room and I'll name it after you! The plans had 48 booths for the dessert room and the rest is history. Today, there is a team of 20 pastry chefs making some incredible desserts for the Berns customers. After you finishing eating a magnificently prepared steak, you're escorted upstairs to the dessert room. Here's an added bonus, ask for a tour of the wine cellar and/or kitchen. They'll be more than happy to show you the back end of the restaurant. COVID might have changed that, come to think of it, we weren't shown the kitchen last week when we dined there. My sister in law has been dreaming about the chocolate peanut butter truffle the last time we visited. Me? I always like to try new things, I did take a bite of her dessert ;) I can see why the Peanut Butter truffle is a popular choice. It has chocolate covering the entire dessert with a large chocolate shaving on top. The banana caramel ice cream just adds another note to the flavor experience. Truly incredible. I enjoyed my Pineapple Upside down cake, a dried pineapple topped this dessert. It was another decident choice and highly recommended.
