I'm new to Omaha, so I really have no idea where this place (or anything else for that matter) is, but I'm glad I got to try this place. I am a huge fan of BBQ of any type, and I got the combination of delicious pork and beef brisket, and then I doubled up on the meat hehe. The meat itself is cooked very well and melts in your mouth...drool. The bbq sauces do a great job of complementing the meats. The best thing about this place though is the price! Each sandwich is only like $4-5, but you get a well-portioned sandwich. I'm gonna try to come back here sometime to try their ribs and sausage. read more

Possibly the best BBQ in Omaha. My fav is the smoked chicken. Served sans sauce, with 3 types of sauce on the condiment table. Very casual - order at the counter. Staff is friendly and efficient. Great $5.50 lunch special - pork, chicken, or sausage sandwich, chips and a drink. I have also ordered the ribs and whole chicken for take-out. Actually -5 stars. Sorry to say we had the worst meal - ribs, brisket, coleslaw, and beans. Ribs had no smoke or really any flavoring, seemed like they were baked and/or steamed. The pound of chopped up Brisket was close to 50% fat. You couldn't take a bite without getting a mouthful of fat. Coleslaw and baked beans seemed like Family Fare deli-ish. One of the first food stops on my most recent trip cross country. We ordered a chopped pork sandwich, brisket sandwich and a half smoked chicken to go. I enjoyed everything I tried and had some decent leftovers to munch on before ending up in Seattle. The prices and portions were more than fair. And everything had a decent smoky flavor. Service was quick and friendly, Also there is little I found sketchy about the location, other than a lack of overpriced real estate and a bit of diversity that might make a certain type of individual uncomfortable. I love hartland BBQ. I have tried many different BBQ restaurants in Texas, Kansas and Iowa and I prefer hartland over everywhere else I've tried. The cornbread is super moist and delicious. I also like the potato salad as a side. The ribs are always fresh and have a lot of meat on the bone. I also enjoy the brisket sandwich with hartland BBQ sauce. I already feel like a meat glutton for writing this. Ahem. Hartland has been my go-to local spot for BBQ for years. The fact that it's only a little over a mile from my house helps. Convenience aside, Hartland has some mighty fine racks-o-ribs, smoked right outside this little Benson eatery for all to see and smell. (Mmm. Burning flesh.) Every time I've had the ribs, they've have been moist and tender. If you're getting a rack or two to go, they give them to you wrapped in plastic, which is kind of weird and messy to unravel when you get home -- but hey, this place is no frills to the max. Do you expect them to unwrap your ribs for you, you pampered little baby? Hell no. Anyway, as saucy of a guy as I typically am, the ribs actually don't need much sauce. They shine on their own. Still, if you're into slathering everything with sugary ketchup-based goodness, they have a few sauces to choose from, from sweet to smoky to spicy. Hartland focuses on making great BBQ and they've definitely accomplished that. It's a divvy little spot that has an odd fishing-motif. The service is adequate and the lines are never too long. Review #200... I was waiting for something truly special for this review. This place truly, is a special place. I live in Phoenix, not known for it's BBQ, so one thing I had to do in the midwest was have decent BBQ, and after a quick yelp search, I was led to Hartland BBQ. When you pull up in the parking lot, it smells delicious, and they have a huge smoker outside. Inside, it is very clean, and the staff is beyond friendly... this is a HUGE point with me. There are no attitudes here, just friendly, eager to help you people. I told them it was my first time and they gave me small samples of the pork, brisket, and chicken. I was pretty sure the brisket and pork were the best things I'd ever tasted, so I got a brisket dinner. It was delicious. The beans were interesting, with a few fruits and veggies thrown in there. Cornbread was among the best I can remember, as there is just something about a sugary sweet glazy layer on top of the bread that makes it amazing. The brisket itself was smoky, tender, and flat out delicous, though I enjoyed the pork a little more during another visit. The pork is just fall apart tender and has a little smoky, little sweet, little salty taste to it. I realize that I have, before Hartland, NEVER had real BBQ. NEVER. The owner of the restaurant recognized I was alone and came to the table and talked for about 20 minutes. He was a very nice guy, and remembered me the next week when I came back. I noticed a few folks here talking about Texas. Now, it's fine to rate things on a global perspective, but this ain't Texas. Comparing Hartland to other Omaha eateries (for that matter, let's include anything between here and KC, where it starts to get a bit more competitive) Hartland is five stars, easy. This is good smoked meat. Light rub, decent bark on the pork and brisket, usually juicy and flavorful (hey, everyone has an off night now and again). They serve a mild and hot version of their homemade sauce, a sweet sauce that's thin but not too vinegary, along with KC Masterpiece. I usually don't bother. The brisket is excellent, the pulled pork is excellent, the baby backs are wonderful. My wife likes the sausage, but it's a bit too sweet and fatty for me; great if you like Polish. What I like to do is get a double meat sandwich with a mix of brisket and pork. I eat the stuff that won't fit on the bun by itself, then hit it with just a tiny bit of the mild sauce and eat the rest as a sandwich. And don't forget the sides: good enough on the baked beans, some nice peppery southern-style green beans, a sweet cucumber salad, and cornbread that could be better in my opinion. But hey, you can't have everything. If it were perfect, I'd spend all my money there. Hey, and now they're open on Sunday! read more

This place seemed decidedly average to me. I had the brisket sandwich with baked beans. The brisket was room temperature when it was handed to me straight from the kitchen. The quality of the meat was fine, it just wasn't even warm. The baked beans were nothing special. Usually my reviews are a bit more florid, but I don't see any reason to get too hysterical here. I had high expectations of this place due to so much of the positive reviews, but it was average at best. My husband and I were in the area of Benson and decided to Yelp where to eat. BBQ sounded good and this was down the street so we went for it! I ordered the half rack of ribs with baked beans and my husband ordered the brisket with baked beans and corn bread. We had waters to drink and our bill came out to be around $30 which is a bit pricey for an "order at the counter" place IMO. We sat down and I was pleased to find they had a bunch of different types of barbeque sauces you could dress your meat with ranging from sweet to hot. The BBQ itself was good- both the brisket and the ribs (although a little dry), however, the sides were such a huge letdown. You could tell they were an afterthought and possibly tasted like canned beans and boxed corn bread. Overall, the BBQ was good but the sides were more of an afterthought and the value could have been better! read more

I know this place is getting high marks, but its not that amazing for BBQ Snobs. If you are NOT one...you will love this place. Lets get to it... If you go here, you will hate yourself if you do not order the baby back ribs. That was the balance of my review. Those ribs were the bomb. The end. They make their own sauce, but it comes out in an old Costco-sized Ketchup container, and its Sharpied on the top and says: "Hartland Sweet Sauce." You can barely read it, but its good stuff. The other sauces, sadly, are KC Masterpiece from the local Walmart...which I think is tacky. If you are a BBQ place, either make your own BBQ sauce and offer it solely, or offer other, store bought sauces. But both is strange to me. It's like, here is what we think is amazing, and here is some crap. Enjoy. Be awesome at BBQ sauce or don't offer it. Bad business plan imo. Quick Hitters: The brisket had tons of flavor and tons of grissley fat...no option for lean. DO NOT get the sausage, it doesn't have much taste, and the trade-off for eating sausage is always the taste has to match the unhealth. This is not the case. You will just get fatter and closer to a by-pass surgery with no taste-savoring benefit along the way. No Ice Tea??? You are in the middle of Freaking America and a BBQ place at that...how is it that the only Tea you sell is some store-bought Brisk tea in a bottle behind the counter? Come on folks...brew the freakin tea already! #Fail. If you go there, order Ribs, Ribs, and more Ribs, and their potato salad was bangin too. You'll love the Brisket, if lots of chewy fat doesn't bug you, because the taste is legit and smoked nice...Some fat is fine for me...but this stuff was not just some. Brisket is very dry and has almost no flavor. Tastes like it wasn't even smoked, just baked in an oven. Ribs were just as bad. Usually, poor BBQ can be salvaged with a decent sauce, but that wasn't the case here. Mild and sweet sauces both were boring and didn't do much to enhance the meats they call BBQ. Wow! I just checked out this BBQ. Hands down the best in Omaha. The brisket and pork were fork-tender and delicious even without sauce. They are OUTSTANDING - Juicy and full of flavor! As a native Virginian, my preference is for VA-NC style sauce and the folks here are open to working on that! In the meantime, their hot sauce is pretty good. Their sides are super - the cole slaw and creamy cucumbers were fresh and made with wonderful ingredients. The staff are super helpful and friendly. If you want something your way, just ask. After partaking of Arthur Bryant's barbeque, it's hard to compare any other barbeque...especially since I'm such a fan of AB's. It was refreshing, though, to come to a small, local establishment and find that the tenants of quality and flavor are not lost. :) Owner and BBQ Master have melded into one for an outstanding product. Having been there several times in the recent past, I can honestly say that I don't get tired of what Hartland has to offer. Usually a sucker for a good deal, I always get the pulled pork or pulled chicken sandwich - a lunchtime special that comes with chips and a drink - very reasonable (and tasty!). When visiting with a friend, he and his daughter shared ribs and brisket - both received two thumbs way up!!! If you're a BBQ sauce fanatic, don't stop at Hartland. Here, they're all about properly prepared and smoked meats. There isn't anything bland or bitter about this place. Be a newbie, get some samples, and let us all know what you think! :) read more

This placed just opened up a few months ago and I think it is great. I've already eaten there about a dozen times. They have great lunch specials and dinners are reasonably priced. You can spend anywhere from $4.50 for a brisket sandwich up to around $20 for a rack of ribs. The ribs are tasty but not much meat on them (no spare ribs either). I would recommend for a first timer to get the 2 meat dinner with brisket and pork, baked beans and slaw. It even comes with a chunk of cornbread. For the money, it's the best around. Note: The "Hartland" bbq sauce is ok, but I normally go for the "hot" bbq sauce. It's damn tasty on some brisket.... read more

While visiting relatives in the Omaha area, I found this 'que joint. First off, I have to state that I'm a BBQ snob. I do my own smoking, so my expectations are high, and probably higher than most Joes. Ordered the half-rack of ribs. Believe they were using St. Louis cut ribs, as they were pretty meaty, unlike baby backs. Darn good, not overdone, but a little on the bland side. Didn't get the big smoke flavors others mentioned. And they serve 'em nekkid; no sauce added, which can be good, as it lets the meat flavor shine through, not getting lost in a drowning of sauce. Or less desirable, if you prefer them sauced, as the sauces (3 kinds, one with what I think was Habenero in it!) will be cold and not caramelized. Think the ribs could've used more seasoning. Wife and kiddos got the pulled pork and brisket. Both were fine, but the PP could've used a little more "bark" in it. Still, not bad at all, especially considering the price, which is downright cheap. Brisket was average, but no complaints here. Did not try any of the sides, but walked away full. As I said, the ribs were plenty meaty. Talked to one of the owners for a bit. Real friendly guy who is proud of his food, and knows a thing or two about real bbq. Oh, and the girl working the counter, she's a keeper. Man, took 5 different orders from our party, didn't write one thing down, and nailed them all perfectly with no mistakes. Now that's a person you keep. And she worked lightning-fast! Perhaps an improvement on the decor would be nice. Oh, and serve some suds. Beer will prolly increase traffic by 25%. The place sure isn't much for the eye either. I thought for what I got, I didn't get my monies worth. Yes. Saw a guy wearing one of their t-shirts the other day and had to look them up. There's one thing I can't pass up, and that's bbq. Looked them up on Yelp and saw i want the first to find this place. Had to see if all the good reviews were true...they were. Customer service was fantastic. Staff (and probably the owner) wee really friendly and helpful and even gave samples since we hadn't been there before. They were even patient when I kept changing my mind with everything I tried. I'd say the ribs were best followed closely by the pulled pork and brisket. The success were on point with a sweet KC style, a sweet and spicy Texas style sauce and a couple of others. The sides were good. Loved the cornbread. I like a little more seasoning in the potato salad and slaw...preferably peanut slaw. But I'm also a fan of a lot of seasoning, and most probably aren't, especially in Omaha. Great hole in the wall bbq which is hard to find in Omaha. They have a lot of competitive bbq teams but not many good bbq restaurants. If you're looking for good bbq, Hartland has apparently been here for ten years. Wish I'd found it sooner. read more

I find there are two different types of BBQ joints. One takes the concept of pit bbq and turns it into a dining experience complete with servers and a wine list. The other usually is a dive with meat served on a tray. Hartland is a great example of the latter. I honestly prefer the no frills approach to BBQ where the menu is simple, the people are friendly, and meat is served by the pound. I decided to take a trip there with a few friends to feel the place out. The restaurant resembles a small red and white barn with close proximity to the Benson thoroughfare. It's simple, a little dated, with red brick, wood and neon dominating the space. Also, parking is limited but it appears there is a lot of transient traffic picking up. Shortly after we walked in a gentleman walked in the door and promptly yelled, "I want some great freaking ribs!" This was promptly relayed verbatim to the back of the restaurant in a hearty voice and a smile. I went for the full rack of baby back ribs as well, and added on some brisket to boot. The food was served quickly in plastic baskets with paper and we were instructed on the four different sauces that were available at the center kiosk. There was a generic kc masterpiece sauce which is the standard tomato based molasses blend, but there was also the heartland sauce which was uniquely crafted from a base of chili garlic. I don't know that I found it as appetizing, but it definitely was different. The also had something you don't see very often in a midwestern rib joint, Carolina gold, although it was a little thin and oily for my taste. Also, one of the bottles was leaking and had created spots on the floor which were managed by having a blue dishrag underneath it. That being said I didn't come here for the pristine restaurant experience. I came for ribs. The full stack was served Memphis style (dry/no sauce), overflowed the basked, had an excellent bark, and were thick and juicy. They pride themselves on their smokey flavoring and it comes through on each bite. They were voted best in Omaha in 2015 and I can see why. The brisket however was extra fatty and a little too loose and I found myself wishing I had just ordered the chicken instead. I'm not exactly a small person, and I could definitely handle a full rack myself. A complete dinner would include a couple of sides, and it would be easy to walk out of there paying 30$ for two people. Imo that seems a little steep for dinner served in plastic and paper. I will definitely return for the ribs alone especially because carry out is an option. I don't think it's the type of place I would want to hang out in. Perhaps if beer was on tap and they had a game or two on I might stick around with my buddies more often. read more

I've been here several times and this place has consistently good barbecue. It's one of the food gems of Benson. The ribs are my favorite menu item. No question that they season and smoke their ribs to perfection. Their pulled pork is probably my second favorite menu item. Nothing short of delicious. Their brisket is good, although a few times it's been a bit dry. Their sauce options are small (spicy, sweet, mild) but each one adds a nice flavor to the barbecue. I'm not a huge fan of their sides. I sort of get them just because I don't want to eat only a half rack of ribs as a meal. Their cole slaw is pretty boring and bland. The potato salad tastes weird (can't quite pinpoint what it is). Beans are decent. This is the best barbecue restaurant in Omaha to my knowledge, and really had quality meat. read more

Amazing BBQ, friendly service, and a great experience. I lived in Texas for a while before moving to the west coast for college and found myself in a land of yummy burritos but lacked good BBQ. I recently moved back to the Midwest and have been hunting for quality BBQ and this is it. The food is amazing and they probably don't charge enough for it which of course means that I will be back again soon. The pulled pork was melting in my mouth and the brisket had so much flavor that I didn't see any need in adding some of their sauce (which also tasted great). Basically, you should eat here. This is the best place in Omaha if you are into Carolina BBQ. Though it's not listed as such on the menu, get the pork sandwich, a side of coleslaw, and some of the Carolina vinegar sauce (not tomato-based) available on the table with the other BBQ sauces. Then top your sandwich with the sauce and the coleslaw and you have Carolina-style barbecue in Omaha. The brisket and ribs are great too. The BBQ is more Midwest-style (similar to KC-stye; not identical though). There's not a bad choice on the menu. The ribs were good. I wanted to like this place. I love BBQ. And like I said, I ribs were good. It was the rest of the stuff that was bad. I thought the sides were fair. The cornbread which I was excited about was very cold and dry. Even room temperature would have been better. I took my son and he got the chicken sandwich. The chicken was cold (as was the bun--not room temp. but cold). It's just something about that which made it unappetizing. There are several sauces available which were alright. I am a Q head. I love smoked meat. The gracious people at Boxer BBQ in Council Bluffs told me to try this place if I was in the neighborhood sometime. Seeing as how their Q is stellar, I was going to heed that advice. I sat down for a pork and beef dinner. The beef was sliced thin and was thus a bit dry. Still nice flavor and spice on top with a medium+ smoke flavor. The pork was in large chunks pulled off the shoulder. The smoke ring was evident and the flavor was quite good. I liked the larger chunks... like finger food. I got a rack of ribs and heated them at a friends house later that night. Phenomenal. I think the ribs are the way to go here. And as a super deal, take out cold wrapped ribs are $14 versus $21 for the hot rack. I had creamy cucumber salad and cole slaw as sides. I liked them both very much. The side of cornbread was a nice pillow of sweet goodness and finished things off well. read more

Consistently the best Pulled Pork in Omaha. There are times when I can recreate a similar taste and moisture and times when I can recreate the bark, but never both. Brisket or pork sandwich with a bag of chips and a drink for a great price makes for a good, cheap lunch. Baby Back Ribs - Sampled on a couple occasions. Bad the first time, ok the second time. I won't bother trying them again. Brisket - Decent chopped up on a sandwich otherwise forgetable. Sides - Middle of the road, but at least I think they were making them in house. I had high hopes for this place based upon their solid four-star review. I walked away feeling like they were just average. Where do I start. First, we ordered a whole piece of chicken. I felt like it was a little dry, and frankly, I feel like I could've gotten a better whole chicken from the rotisserie section at hy-vee or target. The ribs were really meaty and tender, but I would've appreciated a little bit more of a smoky flavor coming through. I felt like they needed some sauce. In regards to sides, we got the green beans, baked beans and creamy cucumbers. My favorite was the Green beans. I would say the baked beans were good, but still average and in regards to the creamy cucumbers I thought they had a little bit too much mayonnaise. Overall, it was good, but in my book just average.
