Forget lobster rolls and blueberry pie for a second...and add Havana to your list of restaurants you must visit during your visit to Bar Harbor. This restaurant exceeded nearly all expectations. This is not your generic Latin American restaurant, and the service, the atmosphere, the quality of the food.... *chef's kiss*. We were first served complimentary ribeye steak bites on cucumber slices. The initial flavor hit resembles good barbecued meat, but then the dash of spice trickles in at the end. As for the free bread, we received a soft generic restaurant bread, but ALSO blueberry cornbread, accompanied by a choice of CHIVE butter, chili oil, or white bean sauce. I've literally never had a restaurant gave me so many options for sauces/spreads! For our drinks, we all got the non-alcoholic Tropical drink. The waitress said they still had some strawberry purée left, so I think that was used instead of blueberry? This was rather unfortunate, because all I tasted was passion fruit and pineapple, which was fine, but it left me wanting, especially when I finished the drink too quickly. The rest we did family style: 2 appetizers--Provoleta and Scallops--and 2 entrees--Seafood Paella and Lobster. The ratio of Provoleta cheese to bread was a bit off to me, as in the bread was too small in comparison. I thought the cheese was decent, but not as hyped up about it as my cheese-lover friend was. I really enjoyed the Scallops. As for the Seafood Paella, I like it the American way that it's made (compared to paella I've had in Spain), i.e. more oily, more flavorful. It was a little weird that there was chicken in it, and I also felt like there weren't enough scallops, as there were only 2. For that price, I've definitely had bigger paella even in NYC, so I would say pass on this. This Lobster Moqueca tho. Coconut broth, mango chutney, pineapple...whose mans?? I loved how innovative this dish was. It could've benefited from more lobster chunks, but the broth was delicious. When I saw a latin restaurant in Bar Harbor I just knew I had to try it. The name might be a little misleading since there weren't any Cuban dishes on the menu. They gave us some great bread and dips for the table which was a nice touch. As an appetizer we got the mussels and they were simply delicious. Then for dinner we got the paella and it's a good size and it was really tasty. They did have some Cuban drinks on the menu which was nice. Got a last minute reservation. Had no idea it would be so good. I mean yes it says upscale but it's truly fine dining although in a casual (in a good way) way. Got seated promptly at a great spot indoors. Got some amuse voice consisting of salmon (mixed with some delectable stuff) on cucumbers. I got the Havana martini and mentioned my dislike for syrups in cocktails and they made me a beautiful pineapple martini :) The caipirinha cocktail was great as well. They started us off with blueberry cornbread and some multigrain slices. It came with a white bean dip, honey-Chile- olive oil, and some chive butter. All of those dips were fantastic. They were paired with the right spices and flavors. We started with the mussels- our server warmed us it will be spicy. IT WAS. I loved it. But it's really spicy so keep that in mind if you can't do that. It was beautifully made though- the broth I mean. Comes with toasted baguette with some pineapple aioli. At first I thought why that. But it's probably to add some soothing effect after that fiery broth. Do order if you like spice. It's a generous portion too. I got the paella. It's big. Share if you can. It comes topped with this beautiful portion of socarrat. It's full of meat. Lots of nice flavors happening here too. Subtle; they don't hit you hard. Lovely! I'm off sugar but my partner insisted I have something sweet on my birthday. Took the flan. Deficient management. Bad food. Ok service. A number of reviews recently were less than the five star army that came through for this restaurant. When researching restaurants for our vacation I couldn't help but think that there were some exceptions to the rule and our experience would obviously be differently. How wrong was I. I made a reservation for Havana restaurant several weeks ago when planning a vacation. I additionally called because of the significance of this vacation being our wedding anniversary. I informed them of the special event and Critical allergies. I additionally asked for out door seating which was not guaranteed. We arrive day of reservation. After being seated, the first thing to come to us was an amuse bouche with nuts. We reminded the wait staff of our allergies. The food is simply terrible. We started off with crab and avocado. The crab is advertised to be fresh picked. It rather thin and minimum in ratio to the rest of the dish. It seems to be mixed with something like ranch dressing which is probably aimed to add creaminess. Needless to say it wastes the dish. We followed up the first disappointment with a Lobster Moqueca and Lamb Chops. The lobster is again advertised to be fresh picked. The dish is just poorly composed. They are trying to put out things fast and in this case it is clear that the components of this dish are prepared in large batches. No flavor in the base. Uneven temperatures with the halibut piping hot, the lobster cold. The lobster additionally did not test fresh. The lamb chops, though perfectly cooked, came out poorly done. No sear on the outside. No spice, not even salt and pepper. Additionally advertise to have a panko crust which was missing. While my wife politely worked through the lamb, I could not eat my dish. I tried to flag down my waitress twice but she wouldn't come to my table. Finally after thirty minutes and my wife being done eating she checks in. I shared my concerns with our waitress and additionally, immediately ordered dessert. She did not hear the order and brought our dessert menus after another twenty minutes. At this point defeated by the sub par experience, we got our check and left. I will note that while our waitress was always polite, she was inattentive and poorly timed. Instead of hiding behind a review, I talked to the manager, detailing this experience. I thought this would lead to a professional, appropriate resolution. While a number of apologies were given, I was surprised by a number of the additional comments made. I was told that there was no record of my phone call discussing a severe, life threatening allergy,, that I should've made clear earlier that the experience was poor, that I could come back for another try (please, this is a tourist town), that I did not order dessert and there was no error on the waitresses end for this. In other words, the manager told me this was my failure. Last time I checked, spending money at a restaurant that aims to be a high quality experience means that I am coming to a place that is detail oriented, treats their customer well, serves high quality food, and doesn't tell a customer that they are wrong. Apparently because they know that I won't be here for long they are allowed to forego a standard in the dining and service industry. read more

Oh goodness, what a fantastic time I had! Honestly this was quite the gem. It seemed a bit off from the main areas but great nonetheless. The ambiance was classy casual and the service was outstanding. The staff really made sure we were taken care of and took care to explain things on the menu that were a bit confusing. The taste of the food was delectable and noteworthy. I was pleasantly surprised give my initial low expectations of this place and only wish I had time to go again! Then we were a basket of multi grain bread and blueberry cornbread served with a small dish containing a honey butter, a Chile oil and a white bean dip. All were good. The bread was exceptional. My husband had a cubre libre. Rum was served separately and a bottle of "real" coke with sugar cane provided. He was extremely happy. I had a Havana martini that had fresh pineapple juice and it was very good. We both tried the Peruvian stew which was quite good. The broth was very flavorful. My only wish was for a small bowl to put the mussel shells in. I ordered the lobster dish and my husband ordered the paella. Both were exceptional. The amount of seafood in the paella was crazy. My husband had trouble finishing it but said it was one of the best paellas he has had. It was full of scallops mussels and lobster. My lobster dish was a rich coconut style sauce swimming in lobster. It was rich and delicious. We were very happy people. Atmosphere was very nice. The restaurant even had a birthday card on the table for my husband and provided us with some lovely truffles on a plate inscribed with a chocolate Happy Birthday. In Bar Harbor for Easter Weekend, options were limited but I was able to get a reservation here. I do recommend making one as this place fills up very quickly. Although it may look small from the outside, there is ample seating. Parking is street parking, there is no lot. For starters, the waitress brought me out bread and a small sample of seafood to try. For my appetizer I ordered a half dozen oysters. For my main entree, I ordered the seafood paella. Furthermore, for my drink I most definitely got a mojito. From start to finish, my meal was spectacular! My oysters were fresh, plump, and had the perfect sauces accompanied. Drum roll please, the seafood paella was absolutely spectacular. I could not stop eating it, and before I knew it the plate was wiped clean, I even impressed my waitress. This place was great! I highly recommend coming and trying something unique! read more

So here is my update on Havana. Still five stars, still a great restaurant. We now eat there at least once each summer, and the food and service continues to excel. Service continues to be efficient and welcoming. I ordered the lobster moqueca again because it was just so yummy the first time. My husband mixed it up and ordered two starters. He loved the gambas, a sauteed shrimp. He also ordered the solomillos, a sirloin steak dish with patatas fritas, and that was a real winner too. This visit we did order dessert, and enjoyed an incredible velvet chocolate cake. I really liked the subtile addition of chilis and the horchata mousse. Havana has been around for 25 years now! We ate here for my birthday as one of the very few restaurants that offers something more than the typical Maine lobster and seafood fare in MDI. I was craving spices and Latin flavors. This restaurant has white table cloths indoors, recommends reservations for dinner inside, and is definitely $$$ in terms of pricing compared to other restaurants in Bar Harbor. The service was good and the food was prepared respectably but missing the spice and flavors I've had at other Cuban restaurants. We ordered a number of items but nothing stood out to me as particularly memorable. I think I even had half of the paella left in a to go box that I remembered I left at the table as we were walking down the street and it was not worth going back the 150 ft to pick up(which is bad since I hate wasting food). We heard the menu on the outside patio menu is different so we will probably come back to try that menu vs eating inside the restaurant. Also, if you like wine, this is place for you. They have one of the most extensive wine menus I've ever seen. Like an encyclopedia of wines. Just double check if they have the wine in stock as not all wines are available. read more

The team at Havana have curated an incredible evening dinner experience. We made our reservation a few weeks in advance, and we are very glad we did. We included that we were celebrating our honeymoon in the online booking, and the hostess knew that and congratulated us upon checking in! Also, the group behind us did not have a reservation and were told that they might be able to come back and be seated at 8:30pm. Our table was in a lovely front corner of the restaurant, and they included a card from the whole staff congratulating us on our honeymoon!!! The initial treat and bread brought to us were so lovely. The apricot treat was a nice touch, and the bread plate and accompanying spreads was delicious. We wanted the recipe for the black bean spread and the spicy chili oil and butter were also incredible. The wine book is unparalleled - we were clearly over our heads in the 70+ pages but also with the combination of entrees we wanted to order. The sommelier heard our request for red but pairing with the seafood and lamb chops and recommended 2 specific bottles. We picked one of his recommendations and it was truly perfect for the soups and 2 entrees. While we enjoyed the seafood chowder, we can't say enough amazing things about the curried pumpkin soup! We know we'll never achieve its greatness, but we want to try to make it ourselves. It was creamy and delicious and had just the perfect blend of spices. On to the entrees - both were the perfect portions - we even took some in a to-go container. The seafood paella had so much seafood of so many varieties as well as the chorizo! One of the best paellas we've ever had. And the lamb was buttery and almost melted in our mouths. Cooked to perfect and we took the chef's recommendation of medium rare. Dessert - the blueberry bread pudding was utter perfection. We took the pumpkin flan back with us to our B&B. Came here on the recommendation of a friend and was very happy. I made reservations here for the night I was planning to propose to my now fiancee and I booked it about 2 weeks out but there were already fairly limited tables on a Thursday night. I wrote in the box where they ask if it's a special occasion to note that it was to celebrate our engagement and the staff all very kindly congratulated us when we checked in at the front desk. Service remained friendly throughout the night. That night, they had live music. Not sure how frequent they have this and for this particular night I was happy we were in a separate room, but it was still pretty cool. They have an enormous wine list (they win awards for it) and a sommelier who is available to anyone who wants to speak with him. We just wanted one glass each though, and the list becomes much smaller if you want a single glass rather than a whole bottle. That was ok with us since we're not wine aficionados, but something to keep in mind if you care. Of course, the most important part is the food. They start you with a couple pieces of regular bread and blueberry cornbread served with an oil, a butter, and a spread/hummus that appears to vary based on the season or maybe just based on the week or something (idk). Our red pepper "hummus" was the best part and the maple butter was also nice. We read that the paella was a large portion, so we decided to get one appetizer and one paella to share and it ended up being perfect. We got the gambas (shrimp) appetizer, which was very garlicky and very delicious. Also got the humba (braised pork belly) appetizer, which was rich and flavorful. Only complaint with it was that the menu says it has plantains in it, but as you can see from the photo, they're just plantain chips. As mentioned, we split the paella and the server was kind enough to serve it to us in 2 separate plates to begin with. So flavorful, rice was perfectly cooked, good variety of seafood (scallop, shrimp, mussels, lobster), chicken, chorizo, veggies. I would order both of these again any day. Last small but really nice touch: I had indicated on our online reservation that we were celebrating our engagement. They all congratulated us when we checked in at the desk, the had a handwritten card for us when we sat down, and they gave us a complimentary dessert of fresh strawberries and whipped cream. read more

The food was superb especially the mussels with white wine, chorizo, pork belly, leaks and feta cheese. The paella was excellent. Scallops were good, but nothing exceptional. Our waitress.Dezirae was good. The downside was the support staff. Side plates came out after the shared appetizer. Water service was slow. The bar was very slow. This was the best meal I have had in a long time. My girlfriend and I went here to celebrate her birthday and ordered a plethora. We started with the shrimp, tuna and snap pea salad, all being exceptional. However, things became life changing when we received our maines (pun intended) She had the seafood paella and I ordered the pork tenderloin. I was practically taking my pants off by this point, the potato puree paired with local carrots and the perfectly cooked pork was like nothing I've had before. Her paella was on par with the best we've had in Spain and we were already bursting at the seams. If you are looking for a tremendous dining experience, look no further than Havana in Bar Harbor, Maine. The wine selection comes in a full notebook! They have a full bar and also serve local beer. The waitress delivered a basket of fresh bread and homemade blueberry sponge cake. This served with a tray of refried bean dip, cinnamon butter and a home made dipping oil made from four spicy pepper mix. It was a great dip. As we like spicy things it was Not too overpowering but the waitress said some thought a little too spicy for them. Too bad they don't bottle that stuff. Starters: we had a bowl of pumpkin soup and an order of Maine crab and Avocado. Both excellent. Dinner was a seafood Paella and Rib eye steak for us. We shared both and could not decide which was better. As you can see from my picture, we left nothing behind!
