food is delicious! i got the blt and upside down pineapple cake. the blt SMACKED. however, the establishment is ran by a bunch of what seemed like 16-18 year old girls who lack customer service almost entirely. to the owner, if you're reading this, please PLEASE don't let poor customer service ruin such a great store:( there were a total of around 6 of them up front. i walked in and wasn't greeted, as someone who works in the food industry, it's just common courtesy. and as i stood there, none of them turned around to greet me for another few minutes. there were two girls, one by the name maddi and the others name i forgot. but those two seemed to have better people skills than the rest. when i walked in, three of them were on their phones with their back turned to me, gossiping. don't get me wrong, im young myself. im 21 and yes its okay to chillax when its slower at work or if you have a second to breath. however i feel when a customer walks into an establishment they should be at least greeted or even spoken to. and one of the girls had ZERO interpersonal skills whatsoever. seemed like a mean girl :/ i feel like some of them should be re-trained on customer service. there were several of them up front and as im watching more customers enter the building, they weren't being greeted or even looked at. it wasn't busy so i didn't understand why these girls were doing anything other than their job?? at one point a woman from the kitchen came up front to help because no one else was. again, great food but shit service, sorry! maddie and the other girl slayed though read more

This place was suggested to me thru yelp, and I must say, they hit the mark on this one! It's a cute little deli that serves only gluten free food. They have sandwiches, salads, hot entrees, soups, and lots of bakery items. I tried the ham and cheese with egg on the parmesan focaccia bread. It was AMAZING!! For that alone, I can see myself becoming a regular real quick!! My mom had the Turkey and cheese on the rosemary bread, and we both tried a couple doughnuts, the red velvet and lemon. Overall everything was great, from the service to the food! We went around 11am and got lucky enough to beat the rush, but shortly after it got pretty busy. I watched them move through the customers pretty quickly, so I wouldn't be to stressed about time if you're grabbing a quick lunch. I have visited this place many times, and each time it is lousy. The food is okay, but the service is terrible, so it doesn't make it worth it. First, they never wear gloves, even when handling the cash register and then touching loaves of bread. Second, I'm allergic to eggs, so when I ask them for egg-free bread, they have to go to the back freezer to get some. Each time, they tell me how I am inconveniencing them and that I should have called ahead. The worst part of this is that one time, I found a RUSTY TACK baked into my bread! I took it into them, and they just said sorry and gave me another loaf. Yes, they have good gluten-free bread. But if you want someone to explain things to you or talk to you about what you need, don't count on it. read more

I ordered a cake roughly a month in advance of my wedding. It was meant to have burgundy frosting all over with a strawberry filling. I had no calls during this month to say that there would be any problems. On the Friday before our wedding I had my husband go pick up our cake that I had ordered. When he returned, I had a white cake with brown frosting around the edges and a cherry filling. They did not allow us to pick up until just before closing time and it was a holiday weekend so they were closed until Tuesday. I had no way to reach them regarding my problem and decided to use the wrong cake to save the wedding. When we brought the leftovers to the bakery, we were told that burgundy frosting all over would have been impossible, which caused me to wonder why we were told it was. This question was entirely ignored in order for the cake decorator to interrupt with informing me that the brown frosting was burgundy and that it had taken hours to get it that color. In addition, I was told that the filling which had halves of cherries in it was absolutely strawberries because she had made it herself. Because the cake had been half eaten we were denied a refund, discount or apology and that the entire experience was my husband's fault. For roughly an extra 60 dollars, I can get a gluten free cake from wal mart and pay half the price with the knowledge that if they mess it up, that company policy is to issue a refund. I will be choosing any other bakery in the future and dissuading my gluten free friends from patronizing this business. read more

This review is for their gluten free products: mutligrain bread and donuts. I have never been to the physical location. I purchased their products at the Great Basin Community Food Co op. For the past four years, I've existed (happily) on a strict gluten free diet. So terrified by the effects of eating gluten, that I was never once tempted to break the diet for a donut. However, the minute I spotted Haven's gluten free donuts at the co op, my heart soared with joy. Never once, did I expect to see GF donuts at a co op in Reno. Slight correction: never once did I expect Reno to have a food co op that carried GF foods. When I cracked open the container the next morning, coffee mug in hand, ready to taste the devilish treat, I was far from disappointed. I was elated. The old fashioned style donut, with maple topping made my heart skip a beat. So wickedly delicious. I saved the multigrain bread for when I got home. After toasting it for a few minutes, I topped it with black truffle brie. Magnifique! I hope they sell their products online. If not, I may have to make the four hour drive soon again to stock up on these fantastic GF products. read more

I don't know if it's a Haven, per se. But it's definitely a respite from all the death gluten that lurks in every other bakery in town. I wish I was one of those goofy fad-dieters who didn't HAVE to be on a GF diet. Because it'd be swell if I didn't have to sell a kidney to pay for a facking brownie or a loaf of bread. As it stands now, however ( and okay forever) I'll be forgoing soft, pillowy breads for semi-stale (feeling) rather tasteless (comparatively) bread (-like) products. (Which, if it's been years since your last real wheat product, they actually don't taste so bad). Haven on Earth has gone through some rough patches. Early on I found their products to be dry and cardboardy. It really was as if the cupcake had been left under a hairdryer for half a day. Or the brownie had been mixed in with a handful of playa dust. But my goodness, they've come a long way since. Admittedly, I'm surprised that they lasted but thrilled that they have. Their bread is delicious. And their baked goods are significantly better than they were. (If you warm them up in a microwave with a cup of water, they can re-moisten quite well). Realistically there's no getting around that semi "stale" quality of gluten free baked goods. It's just a different product entirely, and you kind of have to force yourself to think of it that way. Me?I just want a flipping' sandwich every now and again, so it's nice to have a few slices of bread instead of two wilting lettuce leafs to throw the fixins between. I had heard about this place and was interested in trying it, I walked in hoping to buy some cookies or something sweet. I had waited 15 mins, and wasn't even greeted or anything. I was the only person in there. The only reason I had waited so long was because I thought the owner (some older woman) was going to apologize. Before I could order her phone rang, and she left for another 5 minutes. I finally paid for my cookies which were more expensive than whole foods. also they tasted chalky, like they have been out for days. I wouldn't recommend this place. I still visit the shop regularly and have a new favorite - chicken pot pies! I didn't know I missed eating them since having to go on a gluten and dairy free diet 10 years ago. My gluten-eating family actually really likes them, too, so I pick up enough for all of us and make that dinner. A note to all the complainers about consistency and taste: you can't compare gluten free baked goods to regular wheat-based baked goods. It just isn't the same and never will be. It's all about redefining your expectations - it should be a good tasting gluten-free product. Period. If you are eating gluten-free as a "lifestyle choice" - get over yourself - those of us with allergies don't have a choice and appreciate having options that don't include baking it ourselves. I visited this bakery many, many times since they opened. One thing I can tell you for sure, it has gone down hill, not up. As I've become more experienced with gluten free living I've learned that 90% of what this owner told me from the visits in the beginning she does not know her stuff, at all! After baking and researching for 2 years, I can tell you their gluten free goodies are dry and tasteless!! 2 years ago I thought it was great, but now that I know better I can't believe they are still in business! Being new to eating Gluten Free products, our biggest concern was whether we could find tasty items that made you think you weren't eating special or different food. Someone recommended trying this place. Overall, each of the items doesn't rank as the best we've ever tasted in its category; but, when you factor in that they are all gluten free, you have to give lots of credit to the fact that you really can't tell they are gluten free. To me, that's amazing. Here are our reviews: Chicken Pot Pie - $6.95 - These are pre-made and you take them home and bake in 1 hour. They were a huge hit. Everyone liked the flavor and we made a special trip to buy some more. If the price were right, I'd consider buying them and having them shipped to San Francisco. Take and Bake Pepperoni Pizza - $9.95 - Overall we rated the flavor a 3 out of 5. Rather than being chewy, the crust was crispy like a cookie. The flavor was fine; but, the crust didn't taste like a pizza. Perhaps next time we should cook it less; but, we needed to cooked it long enough at 400 degrees for the cheese to melt. Sandwich Bread - Tasted like soft Hawaiian bread. It was sweet and the white part would not stand up to a hearty sandwich. In the Gluten Free category, we prefer the UDI brand of sandwich bread. Blueberry Muffin - $2.50 - Tasty, we'd buy them again. You can't tell, it's gluten free. Oatmeal Raisin Cookie - $2.00 - Tasty, we'd buy them again. You can't tell, it's gluten free. This was my favorite cookie. Chocolate Chip Cookie - $2.00 - Tasty, we'd buy them again. You can't tell, it's gluten free. This was everyone else's favorite cookie. Snickerdoodle Cookie - $2.00 - You can't tell, it's gluten free. - I liked it; but, the rest of us thought it tasted like an undercooked dough ball. I think part of the problem is that we never buy Snickerdoodles. So, most of the family doesn't have a basis of comparison to other Snickerdoodles. We will definitely be going back to try more items. This bakery is GREAT! My friend can't have anything with wheat in it and she was coming over to my house for dinner for her birthday so I went into the bakery to get a few cupcakes to celebrate. They were out of cupcakes and baking more, but the owner said she had a chocolate cake she could cut a few slices from for me. She cut two slices(which is all I wanted) iced them herself and decorated them beautifully with some pretty flowers and sprinkles. The cake was so fresh, moist, and not dense at all. The icing was amazing too! I also got some baguettes to go with our soup for dinner and they were soooooooo good. I will definately go back, even though I can eat wheat and gluten because everything tasted so good! Their gluten free products are good and well done but the biggest problem is this: Aside from gluten they're blithely unaware of other allergens, while claiming to be authoritative. I'm between a 2 and 3 stars because I haven't tried a TON of stuff, so I'll keep it a 3. I went here to get some GF goodies for a GF client of mine and I like trying new places. I ordered cinnamon rolls $2.50 ea, and quiche with soup on the side ($7 something). The cinnamon roll was good, but given the size I am not entirely sure it was worth the cost. They were very good though. The quiche was ok, it was supposed to be artichoke heart and something else, and I have to say I make better quiche. Quiche isn't that hard to make so I can't ever figure out why so many places have lackluster quiche. The soup was chicken pot pie soup and it was pretty good, I'd eat it again. I also tried the samples that were fresh and they were all very dense and dry. I do a fair bit of GF cooking but there are ways to make it moist, they should do some research! I was SO excited to see their first review on yelp. I was too distracted by the pastry case [brownies! cookies! cinnamon rolls!] to even check out the frozen case. A great selection of breads too. I still come here to purchase products for my son but it has definitely changed since when I first reviewed this establishment. The GF products are still pretty good but the service is hit and miss now. When I first started coming here you could tell the owners were very passionate about this store and their product. Now I will get friendly service followed by mediocre service. Also the bread seems to be very "fragile" now compared to when I first started buying it. My husband has an allergy to wheat, and while he still eats some wheat most of his bread is now from this place. He loves the multi-grain and No Rye-Rye bread. I have tasted both types and the multi-grain is awesome. The rye bread is good but in my opinion needs to be toasted to taste better. I have used the rye bread to make patty melts for both my husband and my sister (when she visits). My sister lives in Chicago and every visit out here we have to stop in here to pick up bread for her to take back home. Apparently Chicago is not as 'ahead of the times' as Reno... lol. Additionally if you have a sweet tooth, there are so many options available that taste fabulous. My favorite is the Chocolate Eclair. My husband always wants to share, but I prefer my own. Their cinnamon rolls are full of cinnamon and sugar and the frosting is right on. They have a wide display of donuts, some that are chock full of protein. I really want to love this place they have so many options for gluten free and vegan items, i'm always excited to try something new every time I go in! The reason I give two stars: I have come here even before new ownership and the staff never seems to be in the best mood. I understand you can't be at your happiest everyday but for a local business I never get much of a welcoming feeling. I work in retail close by and I love coming here for lunch so I always try to call ahead to have my order ready when I come to pick it up - however, I am always told that their "deli has been closed for the day..." although I see no where stated on yelp or on the website that the deli has different hours vs. business hours. Very frustrating for someone who works full day shifts to work around this.. I want to spend my money at your business so why turn it away? I buy the chocolate donuts by the dozen, cut them in half, wrap in saran wrap and freeze them. 10 seconds in the microwave for the most delicious gluten free donuts I've ever had! The chicken pot pie is totally yummy. I've not tried any of their take and bake entrees, but I can't wait to try the chicken enchiladas. Their main business isn't geared around folks dining in as there are very few tables and no ambiance whatsoever. I'm OK with that because they have DONUTS! If I had to rate this place I would have to say their bakery is a 5. Their deli, however, is a 2. I went in last Saturday for the first time and jumped for joy when I saw their baked goods. I ordered a chicken breast panini with brie and sun dried tomatoes. #1, their focaccia was good, but it isn't really sturdy enough for a sandwich. The chicken breast was very bland and almost rubbery. They also don't put anything on their bread (a nice pesto or something would have helped). They also don't have an itemized menu of what your bread/cheese/meat choices are. I stood at the register and told the lady that I had never been before, so I wasn't sure what my options are. She just said "Well, what do you want on it?" Having a better structured menu would help a lot. The "hot" items they had in their refrigerated case also looked really unappealing- cold, congealed enchiladas, and quiche. :/ Now, on to the baked items. They were HEAVENLY. I haven't had a doughnut in probably 2 yrs since I stopped eating wheat. Theirs were moist and delicious. Their lemon bars are also out of this world. The fresh baked bread and cookies. There is sandwiches, tea, coffee. Nice mellow music. If you need the Gluten free then this place is totally great. If you don't need the gluten free then it's OK. The customer service is pleasant but not fast by any means. Even ordering a bowl of soup to go takes about 7-10 minutes with no one in front of me. They tend to finish what they are working on before greeting new customers. I find this practice a little annoying as I would like to be acknowledged even if I have to wait after that. Ok onto the food-I have tried the veggie sandwich and the tomatoe bisque. The tomato bisque was phenomenal, the veggie sandwich was standard. The focaccia bread was also tasty but more so when dipped in the soup and not used as sandwich bread. I have yet to try the desserts, which look AMAZING in the case, so I know I will be back for that and probably the soup. $5 minimum for cards read more

Tried this place for lunch today. I had a chicken pot pie and shared a cupcake with the party I went with. Overall, I thought it was pretty solid. The pot pie was very good flavor wise, although a bit on the dry side. The cupcake was good, although not as good as the Dish Truck's, which I consider the best cupcake in Reno. I also bought a loaf of bread and bagels which I will try later. The restaurant had a nice ambience and was relaxing, except for the loud bread slicer they use. Maybe needs a little maintenance. I'm always driving by this place, so I decided to give it a try. Haven on Earth offers sandwiches, bread, and pastries that are plenty good. Kudos for being gluten-free as well. I was disappointed with the sandwich that I received - soggy, a bit stale, and not flavorful. However the bread was great. The pastries were alright as well, nothing jumped out at me or screamed delicious. I am curious to try out other items though. I will return but will keep holding my breath. read more

Older person with Celiac Sprue disease for 15 years, and am new to Reno where I now live. Tried Haven Bakery for the first time this week. While I have very picky taste buds, I also have doubts about Gluten Free flavors, textures and tastes in desserts. No More. Not in Reno. Yesterday, my spouse and I ate a sandwich at Haven, mine a toasted BLT and and hers a toasted Focaccia Reuben. Both were fabulous. The bread has a lot of air, so it is soft, not chewy and toasts well. It may be a bit crumbly, so I asked for a fork. That worked. We took home a Cinnamon Roll, Sticky Bun, 2 Pumpkin & Cheesecake Cupcakes, one pecan bar, and a slice of Pineapple Upsidedown Cake. Everything was among the best I ever have eaten (all rate 9's or 10's) except for the pecan bar, which was not bad but didn't rate a 10. My only advice for the bakery is to enhance their storefront. The front glass is totally obscured with window paint, likely to keep their products cooler and fresher, but the paint makes it look like a closed Haven. Put a neon "Open" sign up. I hope they don't grow tired of me because I will be a return customer for sure. Can''t wait to try everything on the menu. It's a real "find" for me. read more

If I could give this place less than 1 star, I would. I bought the Groupon for this bakery after looking at their website which says they have vegan products. I am vegan, so clearly I would not have bought the groupon without knowing they could offer me something. Many gluten-free places serve vegan treats and vice versa, but apparently Haven on Earth didn't get the memo. I do not live nearby and was excited to finally go and check the place out. I drove there yesterday afternoon to use my groupon. I was NOT greeted, even though there were about 4 people in the front prep area and absolutely no customers in the store. I waited for someone to assist me while I purused their breads, since no one came to talk to me or ask me if I needed help, I finally asked a petite girl what their vegan options were. She was very friendly and polite but wasn't sure how to help me and directed me to an older woman who I later found out was the owner. I have never been treated so poorly from someone who has a business and a paying customer in front of them. She treated me like she was really bothered that I was vegan and as she turned her back to me she said there's the flax bread (which felt like a brick... hardly appetizing), and some sandwich bread in the back. She seemed taken aback that I had asked about vegan options and had no intention of helping me. When I kindly reminded her that her own website says they offer vegan options she said, maybe she could make me something special order, but I'd have to call it in. I was already in the shop and felt that this was a proposterous thing to ask, so I insisted that she please take my special order now (need I remind you, there were NO other customers there). She finally agreed and basically stared at me and asked what I wanted. I asked for maybe a list of options that she could make vegan. She was no help whatsoever, so I finally pulled out of her that she could make vegan pizza dough and bagels. Great, I thought, now I can be on my way and out of this place... Haven on Earth? Give me a break! She tells me to come back the next day and my order would be ready, so reluctantly I drove all the way across town again today to pick up my things, dreading coming into contact with this wretched woman and hoping at least they would be tasty. When I arrived she informed me that the guy making them screwed up, no apology. She said it wasn't good and to come back the next day. I am appalled by the extreme lack of service at this place, I don't understand why you wouldn't call a customer, knowing full well things were not ready. That would have been fine with me. She did mumble an insincere apology as I walked out the door. So, I have yet to actually try any of the food because I'll have to go back again tomorrow. I'm hoping it'll be good, although no amount of deliciousness will make me EVER go back. (I also noticed that several of their items had cheese in them and were labeled "casein free", huge no no) I don't see how this business will survive: horrible customer service from the OWNER, mislabeling items that can cause extreme physical reactions in people, and blatant misleading advertising of what kind of products they offer. I will not be returning after I get my order corrected and I will steer everyone I know clear of this place. I don't typically complain, but this experience was truly awful. The only good thing about this business is a cute young girl, Melody who works the front, she was kind and polite even when her boss didn't want to be. UPDATE: I went back again to get my stuff, this time I called to make sure they were ready. The woman tried to get me to pay for 3 TIMES WHAT I ORDERED and then acted really offended when I said no, I only want what I ordered. I have tried this place so many times, each time hoping they get a little more conscientious about their practices. One time there was focaccia bread that was labeled casein free and obviously had parmesan cheese on the top. I pointed this out and was assured it would be corrected. It was still labeled as such when I went in about 10 days later. I was once assured the "cheese" for the sandwiches was casein free, and when I read the label ( after my son had a reaction ) it clearly had dairy in it. Next visit, I noticed some diabetic friendly muffins made with "whey low" ( a sugar substitute ). They were also labeled casein free. Whey low is made from milk! Now for the clincher, I ordered 3 sandwiches....one with Brie cheese and the other two, no cheese. The person preparing the sandwiches promptly started making them. He cut the Brie and put it on the first sandwich, then proceeded to cut the apple and the rest of the sandwiches without so much as even wiping the knife. These things may seem trivial to some but cross contamination can be very dangerous. Mislabeling is unacceptable in my book. I really like to see small business flourish but these owners need to be more aware of the serious reactions people can have due to misinformation. Being gluten and casein free is not a choice for us, it is a necessity. I thought we were safe here. Please watch the labels. read more
