Don't let the name of this joint located just west of central Little Italy on Taylor St. deceive you! Hawkeyes Bar & Grill is the real deal, with more than an everyday bar menu. I had a Greek Salad with grilled salmon for lunch that was absolutely delectable!!!! My colleague on the other hand opted for the "bar food," and built his own 1/2 pound burger with mayo, jalapeños, pepper jack cheese (as if it wasn't spicy enough with the peepers), lettuce, tomatoes, raw onions, etc. You get the picture--a diverse menu with something for everyone. You could probably do a lot with it, and it probably has a personality buried somewhere deep inside... but it's just not showing. Came here last Tuesday with a few friends for their $1 burgers and pop culture trivia. The boyfriend and our other friend both chowed down on the burgers. For $1 (plus $0.50/topping) they were pleasantly surprised. We've all been to other bars for cheap burger specials that tasted like crap but these were satisfying. I went with the slider version of my old faithful, buffalo chicken sammies. They offer a variety of sauces and I went with the "hot." I love hot sauce but I'll be the first to admit that I don't have a ridiculously high tolerance for heat (no ghost peppers for me!). These had a yummy vinegary bite, but it wasn't over the top. I can't speak too much about the beer list except that I was happy to find Revolution's Bottom Up Wit for $4/can. Overall, wouldn't come out of my way, but I'd stop in again for trivia and grub if nearby. read more

Just ok. It's really just average bar food that, in my opinion, was a little bit expensive for what it was. If I'm going to pay $13 for a skirt steak sandwich, I expect a pretty significant piece of meat and I don't expect to pay $.50 for BBQ sauce. That nickel and dime stuff drives me nuts. Chili felt very out of a can. $13 for frozen fish and chips is not acceptable. I could see popping in for a few drinks and maybe to take advantage of their numerous specials or trivia night (Tuesdays), but if it's just a meal you seek there are better options in the area. read more

So many choices! I'm indecisive about pretty much everything in life...but decisions like "tater tots or chips" and "cajun, grilled, or blackened chicken" are the type I don't mind making! There were options with everything on the menu, and our server knew every single option that was listed, and then had other questions to ask. I wouldn't say the food was that much different than other bar food, but honestly with all the options they give you -- like choosing from three different "lettuces" for a salad -- this place did go a step above! They also had Abita Strawberry, my favorite seasonal beer, so I might be a little biased. Oh, and there's a nice patio with plenty of tables. If you order a Stella, make sure you ask for it in a regular glass. They use the 33 cl glass which is fine for a 11.2 oz bottle of Stella. Most bars use the 40cl glass which will hold a pint if they don't put too much head on it. They charge like they use the 40cl glass however so they should use it. Hawkeye's is a nice bar but the food is just not very good. They are the nicest sports bar around there and could dominate if they'd work on their food. read more

Went there on a regular Wednesday night, not knowing what to expect as far a crowd. Dinner was good and I'd definitely order the pulled pork sliders again- however when we were attempting to leave it took us a solid 45 minutes to get our bill, which we had asked for a few times. I was confused by the delay, as there did not seem to be a whole lot going on. My friend and I stuck around the bar and came in and out throughout the night. The crowed picked up slightly but regardless of the activity our bartender Lindsey was attentive and very fun to get along with. Went here on Tuesday for the trivia night. They do it every Tuesday and the last Tuesday of the month has a special theme, this one was Disney. There are also specials everyday, and Tuesday is the half off burger. I got the cheddar bacon burger, and it seems for that night they had to cook the burger more well done than I would have liked. The food was a tad dry. The drink special for Tuesday was tequila, and while the margaritas seemed small, they got the job done. The trivia was the best part of the night. Challenging questions, pretty lax environment. Plenty of TVs to watch your various sports. I will be attending again. read more

While I likely wouldn't go out of my way to make this the destination of my night, it's a good place to stop when I am in the neighborhood. Don't expect to get any heavy-handed cocktails served to you here though since their pours are measured by gauges on the bottles. Had 2 bad experiences from uber eats. First was a few weeks ago, my boyfriend and I placed a big order for a few people and they forgot our fries. Wasn't a big deal at the time, sometimes things get forgotten. Second bad experience was last night, I ordered a Cobb salad and spent the night dealing with food poisoning. This is the bar your dad would have if he could convert his first floor and basement into a bar. Of course, that's a good and a bad thing. It looks exactly like what your dad would do if he could create his own bar. Randomly strewn Christmas lights? Check. A locked stogie/cigarette cabinet on your way downstairs to the bathroom? Check. Assorted neon signs around the bar? Check. A dozen or so flat screen TVs? Check. Stripper pole at the back of the bar? Check. Condom machine in the bathroom? Check. This place just smacks of stereotype. Of course that also lends itself to some of the better parts of a bar. Fantastic music playing -- mostly 70s rock, with a mix of some 80s hair bands. A bar that doesn't serve nonalcoholic beer. And lots of fried food. Word to the wise, the tator tots for $3 something is a fantastic bargain. This is, in a few words, a bar's bar. We used to frequent this place on Mondays for their wings - that used to be 10 cents, but now 20 cents. We went back on Monday and it was okay - the wings were a bit small for my taste but the cheese fries were yummy. It took a while for the wings to come out and even longer when we ordered some more. I decided to give this place a few tries because it is close to my apt and I have been disappointed every time. But this time was by far the worst. 1) The server was very cold and it seemed like she had better things to do besides be at work.. like playing with her hair or on her phone. 2) I ordered a buffalo chicken wrap. The server didn't put in the buffalo sauce in the computer. We had to flag her down to have her even come check on our table. 3) When the check came I was charged extra for the buffalo sauce that I received when most of my wrap was gone. 4) When she brought the check I asked to see the manager.. she came back moments later with the wrap comped but no manager. I told her thank you for comping the wrap but I wanted to see a manager to let him know of her horrible service. 5) The manager came and wasn't apologetic... he just reiterated the fact he took the wrap off. He looked like he was high and said he was dealing with other issues at the time she said I wanted to see a manager. I would of rather waited 5 minutes then having her come back with it comped. 6) I have been a server for over 5 years and this place does not follow any of the normal courtesy laws of being a restaurant. If they fixed the service and the management the food this place would get three stars. The chili fries tasted like old burnt chili. The wrap was decent nothing special. I hope they get a new manager and maybe some servers who actually care about making good tips. If I was one of the owners of this place I would make some changes fast because your locals are not happy. read more

Had a "profiling" issue with the security. I ignored it and proceeded with my night. However, when my friend told the manager what happened his response was "I don't know what to tell you." Service is hit or miss, food is hit or miss, specials are rigidly strict with strange rules but the drink specials are the best in the area and on taylor street with a shuttle to the United Center with free parking. Lets start with the manager - he is wonderful. As a matter of fact, so is the evening manager. Both gentleman are service oriented, happy, positive to their staff, and really engage with customers. Should you not be lucky enough to sit at the bar when one of these gentleman are working, your service will be hit or miss. Yesterday, it took us a minimum of 15 minutes to get the bartenders attention to get another drink. Sometimes this happens, sometimes the bartender is great! Food - off the menu, most of the items are decent. Loaded tots are good. Wings are really good. Burgers are REALLY good..... if you come on a weekday and let's say the wings are on special - they are the worlds smallest wings - not the same ones you pay full price for, so it seems like a ploy to trick customers into coming on Tuesday. The $2 burger special though is still pretty good. Drinks - the drink specials are probably the best in the area and they serve the old school cans, which I really like. They are not stingy with extras either, so that good - need extra lime or salt or orange - nbd. Downstairs - There is a whole other area downstairs with a separate bar that works really well for private events. There is also a "stage" area with tables on the main level that is good for semi-private events. Shuttle/Parking - The shuttle runs continuously on game and concert nights. The comp parking is limited to maybe 30ish spots and can be found behind the Potbellys on Taylor Street. Great feature. Street parking is pretty easy to find as well - but with a meter. PS. I've been frequenting this place for about 5 years now. The food is usually really good to make up for the mediocre/I'm doing YOU a favor to wait on you service. Went there yesterday with my mom and uncle and upon scooping up the beans and corn on the bottom of my southwest salad, I found myself with a mouthful of rocks. Yes, ROCKS! One was almost an inch long. I know this happens when using beans sometimes, and when the waitress came back she seemed kinda shocked, but then told me she "believed" me like I'm a con artist or something. She took the pile of rocks to her manager and then came back to say they would "take care of" my salad. The manager didn't come over, and the waitress didn't really seem that concerned any more. Maybe I should have made a scene in the crowded dining room. I'm sorry, but management should have really fallen over themselves to apologize. I called today to speak with the manager because I'm still upset about the way they handled the situation. The manager today seemed a little more concerned but overall had an attitude of 'it's not really our problem'. As far as bad things happening to a customer due to the restaurant error, I feel like foreign matter in your food is pretty much the top of that list. I worked in food service for almost a decade and a little face time at a table and apologies really goes a long way. Needless to say, I will not be returning to this establishment. My friends and I went here Monday to watch a Bulls playoff game. We had to sit in the basement which is kind of a weird atmosphere. They have $.40 wings on Monday, The wings are pretty good but they are very very small. I did enjoy the cheese fries but they are very overpriced ($6). Do yourself a favor and get the wings extra done. Their spicy chili reminds me of Buffalo Wild wings asian zing. Just enough spice and smokiness. This was one of my favorite places to go with friends on Monday nights. The wings were awesome and priced fair. However they have gone up on the price and down on the quality. The wings r so small it's ridiculous. I'm sure other ppl that frequent this place would agree but judging from the reviews I am probably the only one to say it. To top it off the service had gone down drastically. I have been attending Hawkeyes since 09 and I still see some of the same people working there and their attitudes suck. The drinks are watered down as well. I really hope things get better because until they do I won't be going back and embarrassing myself when my friends give me that "really?" Face. Evening ladies and gents. Today's daily lunch on the streets of Chicago brought me to an oldie but goodie, Hawkeye's Bar & Grill. It's rare that a Northsider like myself (Go Cubs!) comes so far south for food and spirits, but I have to pay the mortgage in a struggling economy and that's where work brought me on this warm and sunny Autumn afternoon. Being that this is in UIC territory, I have to be honest, I bet this place is a completely different experience on a Friday or Saturday night, when the kiddies come into play and binge into the next day's football games. But if you want to stop by for lunch, or one drink, you can come in here at anytime during the week and it's always packed with a "come on weekend, hurry up and get here" buzz in the air. I like that. It's a nice separation from the work day, and makes you look forward to Friday evening when play time starts. I highly recommend an outdoor table as well, weather pending of course. It gives you visibility and there's lots of money walking around out there. It's like 90210 The After Years Chicago, and you're actually in it as the star attraction. Today we ate lunch at 1pm. It was packed with health care professionals from the surrounding hospitals, as usual, a nice variety of hard working attractive people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s making up 90% of the patrons. One of the channels had on the Big Ten Network showing Ohio State lose again (the game was four days ago). That was pretty sweet! Music was playing (motown, 80s, etc., a lot of all incusive unassuming numbers) that you barely notice until a song comes on that reminds you of something. The atmosphere here is a 5 star (for a weekday lunch, remember, that is key). Waitresses were very friendly. They even remember you and your favorite burger. Overall, the variety of food is off the charts for a Bar and the portions are healthy. Tons of wraps to choose from with veggies on the side, for those of us who want to avoid the tasty artery clogging features that all the 20 something med students love to order. If you get the chance, add an extra 15 to 30 minutes to your lunch and hit this place. I won't steer you wrong. read more

Hawkeye's is a faux-Irish bar that's really a sports bar, and it's not good at either. It's tacky and garishly decorated. This effect is compounded by their bouncers checking ID's in ill-fitting shirts and ties while the waitstaff and bartenders -- women only; of course -- are dressed in tight denim, little sweatshirts, low cut tops and the like. There are two sides to the location on the first floor. One side is a long room made narrow from the large, double sided bar. Tables surround the perimeter and a small elevated location in the rear. The other side is a dining room, which I have never entered. Bathrooms and a smaller bar are downstairs and in summer there is a patio open outside. There are televisions everywhere ringing the bar, yet sight-lines are difficult no matter where you sit. It's a strange combination. Service ranges from simply uncaring to actively poor from the waitresses. Bartenders, on the other hand, are nice and pleasant. Food is good, but nothing exciting -- basic bar food with a few extras present on the menu. It's high in price but of good quality and large portions. The problem is the drinks. The shot specials are $4.75? Jack Daniels cocktails when on special are $6.00? Those are some not-so-special-specials. On top of that, this is the only bar in the city I've been to that uses an electronic pour control system. It comes off as cheap, as does the bar fruit kept in paper containers with no covers on top of the bar. I had the pleasure of watching a bartender and waitress fix white russians using half & half from those little plastic single-servings you get at a diner. An old-fashioned was made from fruit muddled with a coffee packet of sugar, bitters, a pour of bourbon and then topped off with lemon-lime soda. You may be better off just sticking to beer. All in all, overpriced and poor quality. If you want to watch a UFC bout or college game of some kind, this may be a good place to go if you're in the neighborhood. A lot of people complained about slow service but I was there for the Bears game last night, place was packed and the server made it around to check on beers several times. That's pretty good when you're slammed with tables. They have plenty of TV's for watching games and an MGD pitcher special during a Bears game (though I'm not sure exactly how much it was). The crowd in there got pretty loud while watching the game which is fun if you're there to watch the game. I'd imagine if you went on the day of a game and didn't want to watch it, you'd be annoyed. So don't do that. The onion strings were good, as were the tater tots. Good enough to make you want to shove some in your side pocket for later - really! THAT good! We got "hot" wings and if you like spicy, I'd say go Atomic. I can't tolerate much heat and the "hot" wasn't even that hot to me. My only complaint, and reason for 4 stars was the salad. Perhaps this is not a chronic problem as I've only eaten here once but they didn't drain the water out of the lettuce at all so the bottom of the salad was soup. Which is pretty gross. But the salad was pretty large so by the time I got down to the soup, I was pretty full. Still, if you're going to sell salad, invest in a spinner and drain the lettuce. read more

My girlfriend has been hyping this place for a solid year. "It has the best vegetarian burger ever! EVER! VEGETARIAN! EVER!" I was ambivalent because I love any phrase with the word "burger" and yet I am a very committed meat-eater. We gathered a large group and headed over to Hawkeye's for dinner and drinks. The wait service was surprisingly attentive and responsive for what seems like a run-of-the-mill UIC college bar. I ordered the California Jack burger, expecting the jalapenos and jalapeno jack to singe my taste buds. When the food came out, I noticed that the portions were very large and everything looked delicious but it all tasted numbingly bland. The restaurant itself is pretty cool. It's vibrant but not deafeningly-loud so you can easily carry on a conversation. The restaurant area is decked out with TV screens so if you come for a game, you'll have a nice view wherever you sit. Several rounds of drink specials later, I took the near-vertical slide disguised as stairs to their bathroom. I was transported onto their raging dance floor which threw me off a little bit. One second, a UIC frat boy took me aside to explain how to construct a two-horned, two-story beer bong and the next, a sweaty clubber was telling me that he uses a special algorithm to gel his hair. Hawkeye's seems like it can easily accomodate any stage of drinking so you don't have to leave the building -- from the "couple drinks after work" to the "all out, gettin' my grind on" which is probably really convenient during Chicago winters. read more

I've been to Hawkeye's several times, and it's been pretty predictable; but in a good way like Starbucks is predictable. It's a dive bar, disguised as a sports bar, and it does both pretty well, albiet generically. The space is well arranged, plenty of bar seating, but also enough little nooks to sit with few friends also. There's a big bar area downstairs which seems good for a private event, but I've never seen it being used; shame. That said, the IMO, food is mediocre--the $1 hamburgers aren't; all you get is a burnt paddy and a bun; add lettuce, cheese, and other typical topping and you've got a $4-5 hamburger with a slab of charcoal as the meat. Meh. The Jalapeno poppers were also a bit bland, and not very cheesy. I hear their chili is good though, but i have yet to try it. I'd suggest you stick with what they can't screw up: beer. read more
