Hayatobi is a hidden gem! (Not to be confused with 2 Michelin Stars restaurant Hayato!) Amazing casual sushi spot! I have been hearing about this place and finally made a point to come right before they close. Their last day was supposed to be August 25, 2025, due to end of lease. Japanese sushi chef Mark-san was nice and friendly. Decent sushi and affordable price. I like their Kurodai Sushi. Their Belly Sampler Sushi was great too. Rice dishes had great price. They don't take reservations on the weekends, so we had to write our name down early and waited a bit at the restaurant. Service could be slow when it's busy in the weekends, but it's a great time to catch up with friends and have more drinks while waiting. They had a few parking spots in rear.

Very fresh, delicious sushi. The fish quality is really good and the slices are big with little rice. We came on a Monday holiday night, there was a bit of a wait. The restaurant was half empty but we didnt get seated until 20 minutes later. Service was friendly despite the wait. The wait did not bother me as soon as I started eating. Delicious sushi and was worth the wait. Definitely coming back. Great quality sushi and not overpriced like other places. Highly recommend coming here.

This is a gem (and very unassuming)! This place has affordable Japanese food that does not skip the quality. Hayatobi Sushi has a broad range of rolls, sushi, nigiri, appetizers, noodles, curries, and tempura (I am probably missing a few). The interior is a bit run down, but the service and quality of dishes are amazing. I highly recommend the Salmon Collar, Chirashi Bowl, and Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna. You need to check this place out!

Hayatobi is my favorite low-key local sushi spot in the SGV! There's never a wait and the sushi is not only fresh but affordable. My husband and I usually opt for the sushi bar and our go-to order is the 8 piece sushi omakase for $30. If we are still hungry we'll usually order the blue crab handrolls. All the handrolls are $4.50 and they are loaded with meat! I don't think you can beat this price any where. We always have a pleasant experience dining here, and the sushi chef is also a super nice guy!

THE BEST sushi restaurant in San Gabriel Valley. I have been coming here as a regular so often for years the waiters know us by heart. Amazing food at amazing prices - a San Gabriel staple close to my heart!

We got here around 6pm on a Saturday and got seated right away (plenty of seats). We got: - sashimi deluxe: comes with uni and scallop, both of which are really good! The portion is just right and great for sharing! - yellowtail lover roll: pretty solid roll and everything you would expect! Great for sharing as well! - scallop sushi: if you haven't tried scallop sushi in the past, would recommend it! - chu-toro roll: would recommend - melts in your mouth! - baked green mussel: flavor is good but mussel is a bit too chewy and the sauce is a bit too overpowering. Overall, a really solid spot for sushi and sashimi in SGV! The ambience could be a little bit better but service was great! There is a small parking lot at the back and there's also street parking!

Hayatobi is the most under-the-radar Japanese restaurant I have encountered on the east side. Their fish selection is very fresh and high quality. One thing that really stood out to me was their unagi (eel) and avocado handroll. I absolutely love unagi and usually get it at every Japanese restaurant I visit, which makes for a great control. I have never had unagi this delicious anywhere! I'm not even exaggerating. It's freshly grilled and the charred flavor and texture is what does it for me. A MUST TRY. The lemon salmon roll also stood out to us; this one was very nice, refreshing and light with complementing flavor profiles. _what we ordered: - unagi and avocado handroll: - spicy scallop handroll - yellowtail and scallion handroll - blue crab handroll - lemon salmon roll: - dragon roll - soba and tempura _ambiance - The vibe here is a snapshot of a Japanese restaurant from the 90s - the decor to the city pop classics that reminds me of my drives down to LA with my parents when we lived in the Bay Area. Definitely not pretencious or trying so hard. The food speaks for itself. _service - Service is great and very attentive - very nice staff. We always sit at the bar and have a great time speaking with the chef! _parking There's a small lot to the south of the restaurant and plenty of street parking This is now our go-to Japanese sushi and home-style dishes restaurant in the area!

I was craving Japanese food, and I had heard some good things about Hayatobi Sushi from some colleagues. I also saw that the establishment was starting to serve mont blanc dessert on the menu. With all these things considered, I decided to come here to give it a try. Hayatobi Sushi has a variety of different dishes, from curry, to donburi, to American style sushi. It's a rather spacious and cozy restaurant. Service was quite slow, but the wait staff was still nice. I wanted to get a variety of dishes with my wife, so we ended up sharing kushikatsu, two nigiri, a negitoro roll, and the matcha mont blanc. The kushi katsu was nice. The batter was crispy. The quail eggs were standard. The pork was quite juicy and the shishito pepper was juicy also. I loved both nigiri. The fish were definitely sushi grade, and I loved that they used real wasabi. The negitoro was good, but I felt the rolls were a bit thicker than what I am used to with negitoro. I loved the matcha montblanc and it went well with ice cream. Solid sushi restaurant overall.

Decent Japanese restaurant in the area. I did notice the service was very slow both times we were here. Overall the items were all pretty good but come only if you have some time and not in a rush.

Arabiki pork sausage with spicy mustard. The best I've had.

Hayatobi is my secret weapon. It's my raw fish Japanese izakaya that's my go-to when I have a craving. My favorite is the takowasa (marinated raw octopus in fresh ginger, fresh raw wasabi with salmon eggs); it goes so well with the house hot sake. I also can't pass up the karabiki pork sausage, which is roasted on a grill over hot coals until the casing blisters up; think of tasty miniature kielbasa but much better. I love it with their hot Asian mustard. Their rolls are very fresh and clean - like their negitoro (raw chopped tuna with scallions in a sushi rice roll with nori). Other stuff I've had on the menu include any number of specials like the "fatty" platter of sushi that includes the belly of many fishes (yellowtail, tuna, salmon). The crispy rice with spicy tuna topped with jalepeno, while really popular everywhere is best here. There is lot parking but it's best to come when they open or rather earlier in the evening. The servers are very attentive and are quick to refill your draft Sapporo or hot sake. They also have a great selection of cold sakes and they rate them according to sweetness and minerality so you can properly pair them with whatever you decide to order. This place is great! Just remember that they are closed on Tuesdays.

Really fresh food with great menu prices. Their premium sushi/sashimi/chirashi is such a great deal since they give you a good variety of fish with mostly the belly cuts of the fish. The hot food comes out really hot and fresh. The shrimp tempura's texture was perfect. The shrimp had the perfect bounce when biting into it and the crunch on the outside was nice and crispy. The rest of the menu is pretty diverse so there's so much to choose from. Will be trying other items next time!

Blue crab hand roll - A must try
    Raymond L.

One of my go to sushi restaurant in the SGV area. Been here several times and have yet to give a review. If you are looking for a reasonable price BUT for fresh fish then consider trying this place. Good service and very tentative. The blue crab hand roll is a must try. But overall everything is superb. A must recommended hidden gem

Crispy umami popcorn shrimp (new item, as of Aug 2023!)
    Rachel C.

I've been coming here so much, I didn't realize my last review was soooo long ago, time for an update!! Still the best sushi hands down in the SGV! We bring family and friends here, and continue to introduce them to others whenever we can because we know how good the food is here, and how hard Mark Hayashi & team work! Added to my many pics is a new item we had the privilege of trying last night, which was super yummy, crispy umami popcorn shrimp! Very different from any popcorn shrimp I've had before, it was lightly battered, super crispy, with just a right touch of sweetness without being overpowering. He's also added different new fish, and we've enjoyed exploring the different flavors! A note to those expecting "fast food" speed - a good restaurant often has crowds and long lines, and many are willing to wait for even less quality food. There are times they get crazy busy, and if they are shorthanded, they cannot seat everyone without compromising on their quality. I recommend patience; it's worth it here! I'm already looking forward to my next delicious meal!

The store offers an impressive selection of Japanese goodies, including ramen, condiments, fresh sashimi, and a wide variety of sushi rolls. There are so many options and combinations to choose from. If you are looking for sashimi, head to the back of the store where they have conveniently packaged fish sold by the pound, and they will happily slice it for you. Or, if you are in a hurry, you can grab their freshly made sushi rolls from the refrigerators. On my visit, I picked up ahi tuna, toro, salmon, and yellowtail sashimi, along with California rolls, tuna rolls, and salmon rolls. The quality of the fish and the perfectly seasoned sushi rice were so good that I barely needed any soy sauce or wasabi.
