Just one block from my workplace, Hayes Valley Bakeworks is one of my favorite lunch spots, especially when I'm in a hurry. They have a straightforward lunch menu, and after several visits, I can confidently say I've enjoyed everything I've tried so far. I usually opt for one of their six sandwiches, paired with either soup or salad. My favorites are the Turkey, Brie & Apple and the Breaded Chicken Breast sandwiches. I've also tried and liked the Chicken Curry Salad and the Mozzarella, Tomato, and Basil sandwiches. I'm a fan of split pea soup, and their Split Pea with Applewood Toasted Almonds complements most of their sandwiches. I haven't tried any of their other soups yet, but I plan to. Recently, when we ran out of milk at the office, I didn't want to use powdered milk, so I stopped by Hayes Valley Bakeworks for a cup of drip coffee. I was pleased with my choice; the coffee was fresh and aromatic without being too strong for my taste. One of these days, I also plan to try one of their pizzas. The Zucchini, Feta, Roasted Red Pepper & Red Onion pizza has caught my eye. read more

1 star for the cinnamon roll. 4 stars for the service and ambiance. This is a clean café with friendly service, ample space, and many lunch items in addition to pastries. Open only on weekdays, from 8 AM to 3 PM. There's plenty of windowfront seating on this busy street, as well as magazines and books -- including a word search if you'd like! -- that you can peruse while you're here. I preferred the eggs and cheese biscuit - the biscuit was absolutely amazing. Perfectly cooked egg with warmed up cheese, it was flaky, warm and satisfying. I also grabbed prepackaged Cole slaw (love, love Cole slaw!) - the Cole slaw not only did not taste fresh, it was flat without tang or creaminess. Got it warmed up and it was buttery, flakey good! The cheese was great too, tasted like some good cheese. What I liked best is how the melted cheese was evenly spread throughout the pastry. The cafe is nice and tidy, with a grab-n-go section, a small bookcase of cookbooks to peruse, and some tables and window counter seats to enjoy your order. I have enjoyed this place for years but recently, for some weird reason, they allow their chips to expire for months before replacing them. I always buy them with a sandwich but have repeatedly informed employees of the expiration, and based on their response they don't seem to care. This has been happening for the last 8 months. Again, today, I see the chips expired 2 months ago and politely let the employee know. He responds "okay" with a blank stare. Weird. You're welcome. I got to wonder what else is expired behind the counter now and how much they care or replace in a timely manner. Unfortunately, I probably won't return because this reflects on the work ethic and customer service of the entire place. I hope they can remedy this for other customers. I LOVE this place Banana bread. Great baking but their banana bread is my favorite. They don't put in any nuts and it's always soft and moist. They have other items too. Unfortunately they no longer open on weekends. Weekdays only and that is such a huge disappointment to me. I don't have time to come out here on weekdays....sigh.
