I bought a Groupon for a deep conditioning & cut and called up on a Wednesday afternoon to schedule an appointment. They were able to get me in that Saturday mid-day so I was really happy about that. My stylist was Tamara. She was really careful to listen to exactly what I was looking for in my cut, and asked my opinion to make sure I was happy with what she was doing many times along the way. All I was having done was cutting off my overgrown 'do, but she approached it really methodically and carefully. I really appreciated that! In the end my hair looks awesome and I am SO happy with it. Even though I don't fuss too much about my hair and I have a simple style (you'd be surprised at how easily some can really mess that up), I'm always weary of trying new hair salons but this was a fun and pleasant experience. Like others, I purchased the Living Social deal for $35 which includes a shampoo, haircut and Keratin condition or blow-dry. After I thought about it for a bit, it's pretty much $35 for a haircut but with a lot more words. If you go to a salon for a haircut, you're gonna get it shampooed and blow dried regardless. They tack on an extra $15 if you opt for both the keratin condition treatment and blow dry. The appointment was easy and the gal who answered the phone was sweet. Glory was my stylist and she's a super cool, chic girl. The shampoo included a bit of massage which was really relaxing. Glory kept my style but cleaned it up a bit and gave more body and swing to my hair which has some slight layers all around. I really liked that she took some time and detail with my side swept bangs because it's the one part of my haircut where I care enough to take a break from reading up on the latest celebrity gossip and look up from the magazine. I've ended up with a clump of hair as my bangs before. Glory twisted, trimmed, angled and thinned my bangs to perfection. She finished up with a blowout and I was really pleased with my soft swing-y hair. Too bad I won't be able to repeat the look since I don't bother to own or use any kind of product in my hair. One day i guess.... I totally appreciate quality work with effective use of time so I loved that i was in and out in about an hour. I can't say anything is ridiculously spectacular or blew it out of the water, but all in all a really solid experience and I'm happy with my hair cut. Friendly and cool staff and I appreciated the glass of cold water while I sat under the the big globe of heat. I'm not sure yet whether or not I would return only cuz I'm not a big fan of spending too much money on my hair. Glory did give me a card with $10 off my next visit so we'll see. read more

I love love LOOOOVE Lori! I've been 2 years overdue for a cut (which is probably an ultimate crime in the hair world), and I figured it was time to get it did. I FINALLY booked an appointment with Lori today @ noon. When I got into the salon (which looks like a Victorian house), I thought the place looked cute and modern. I got greeted with a smile and a hug by Lori herself. She sat me down, offered me a bev and asked what I wanted to do with my hair. I just wanted a simple cut - chest-length (my hair was already up to my arse) with layers and long bangs. She gave me the full on treatment and her scalp massage was so relaxing, I almost fell asleep! She then gave me the most awesome haircut and style! And thankfully, she gave me exactly what I wanted. My hair felt 50 times lighter and it looked amazing! She's also fun and easy to talk to, so it wasn't awkwardly quiet. Such a quaint and cozy salon, in downtown San Jose. A small space, but that's what makes it nice. A decent amount of retail, and lot of color everywhere! My first haircut here was with Kendra. She listened and gave me good advice. Just a nice simple trim. My second was with Lori. Decided to go a little shorter, about 6-8 months later? I forget when. She listened well, gave me a great shampoo and a decent haircut. I'll be honest, I don't change my hair too much. I've got the best of both world's in my hair: my Cambodian mother's softness and dark chocolate color, and my Mexican father's amount of hair. So I basically have it straight and long, usually inches past my bust line, and as far down as my belt line. All I really need from time to time is just a trim and some soft layers, and Lori understood that! Simple blowout and very little product was needed, which I was thankful for. I tend to not do much with my hair, and it still looks amazing. Good vibe, friendly! Offer drinks when you come in. The stylists are all very friendly with everyone. I came across Headcase on Yelp and decided to go there to see if they could fix my hair (I had JUST gotten it cut elsewhere, and this other salon COMPLETELY botched it up. They just cut straight across and didn't texture it to make it look natural. And the bangs were blunt and ugly. They were awful!). Kaitlyn, one of the stylists, was so sweet and I don't know what kind of magic she did on it, but she was able to fix my hair!!! She textured the blunt areas and it looks completely natural now. I started coming to this salon about 6 months ago and I really enjoy the quality of service and friendly staff. The place is really cute, clean, and energetic. The girls working seem super happy and friendly. They keep things very mellow and it's not a scene at all. Glory has been cutting and coloring my hair. She is the bomb! I've been lucky enough to see her about three times at Headcase and she has been great with my crazy hair. She took me from box-dyed black to a natural brown and then back to dark (I know... I'm one of those people who can't make up their mind). She always tells me how to get my hair as heathy as possible and cuts exactly what I want. I even let her chop off 5- inches! Now that's trust!!!! She gave me incredible bangs (I think she may be a bang expert) and I can't even describe how many compliments I got on them. 4 stars for customer service, 2 stars for results: I have been thinking about somehow straightening/smoothing out my hair, and so when I saw a groupon for a Keratin Express treatment at Headcase, I decided to try it out. Sad to say, the treatment really didn't do anything for my hair. I waited over 24 hours to wash the treatment out of my hair, while the minimum wait time was 8 hours. I did what I was told - use sultfate free shampoo/conditioner, tried not to wash it too often... By the end of the week, and only a couple washes later, I didn't think it felt any better, and I wouldn't say the hair was any more manageable than before. Truthfully, I thought it felt drier, and it acted the same as usual. (It is supposed to last 4-6 weeks.) Guess I won't be doing that treatment to my hair again, especially if I have to pay at regular price! Service-wise, Lisa, the person who worked on me, was nice and friendly, and we had a pleasant conversation while she worked on my hair. At first, she told me that since this was an express treatment, she wouldn't be flat-ironing my hair, just blowing drying it. I was a bit disappointed to hear that since I had previously read up on keratin express treatments and that was usually one of the steps. However, at the end, she did flat iron, so I was happy. The Wednesday after my Saturday appointment, Nikki from the salon actually called me to ask how my experience was. I told her it was fine, since Lisa was great. (Thought that was very nice of Nikki to call.) I didn't complain about my treatment since I hadn't really take a good look at my hair nor analyzed the results until after she called. In terms of parking, if you go on Saturday, you can park a block away at the parking structure for free (the city structure is free on weekends before 6pm). Otherwise, if you can't stand the walk, you can park on the street (but watch out, I saw a car get ticketed) or try your luck at the lot right across the street. read more

So I got my livingsocial deal, set my appointment, and came in on a nice saturday morning, and everything was just plain wonderful. The facility is adorable, everyone was smiling and nice, and my stylist Jennie did amazingly. I definitely wasn't particular. THis is my first review ever. I knew I had to share because I loved Julina. She highlighted my dark brown hair with very subtle and natural-looking honey brown hues. I came in expecting to change my hair to one solid color, an ash brown, but she was very knowledgeable about the chemistry of hair and suggested to not go the route with the type of hair I have. She was very patient, especially when I can be very indecisive. In addition to her patience, she was also attentive and careful. After finalizing on a decision, she worked her magic. Jessica greeted me immediately and served me a glass of wine while she got her station ready for our time together. I was very impressed with Jessica. I have had nothing but amazing results with Mallory. Mallory has been my hair stylist for a couple years now, and what I love the most about her is that she is upfront and honest when it comes to what can be done with my hair. I have thick hair and I have a lot of it- so she recommended a few ways to tame it to make it more manageable on a daily basis. She's also colored by hair multiple times from dark brown to blonde highlights, ombre, and used the balayage method- each time fully informing me of the process so I know what to expect, and i've always loved the end results! I recommend Mallory because not only is she a great stylist, but she is also extremely personable and will make you feel right at home. Any time i've ever had a concern with my hair she was willing to address the problem right away with no hesitations. I went to Luis for some extensions. And I should probably mention that I live in the Central Valley, so it's like an hour and half drive for me. On our first meeting he was very professional and had me wash my hands and then proceeded to wash his after me and prior to starting the service. He took my temperature and asked me some Covid related questions. Definitely felt that his sanitation and disinfection is on point. During the consultation, we figured out the desired length and thickness that would work best for me. Once the hair came in and it was time for the service, Luis colored my hair to match the extensions and boy was he spot on. The installation was fast and Luis made the time go by with our awesome conversation. Next time we are going longer and thicker. This is definitely my go to for extensions and color work. If i could give a negative rating on my experience in Headcase, I would and I'll give you all the details as to why! Made an appt with Kaitlyn at 2 for a curl on Sat 10/22 -- it was just a curl, NO wash or blowdry. Occasion: birthday dinner with friends in San Francisco. I arrived at 2:05 b/c I had to park two blocks away -- couldn't get to the parking lot cuz of the construction and there were no parking nearby. Kaitlyn greeted me right away when she heard the door and told me she was just "finishing" up. I said "ok. no problem." To me, finishing up means an extra 10-15 minutes TOP! NOPE, it was exactly 2:38 when she finished her last client. By that time, I told her I had to feed the meter again b/c i only had 25 mins left. Came back, told her that I want soft culrs and she started working on hair at 2:42. But I realized the curls were too curly, so I showed her a couple of pics of what I have in mind. And I told her my hair is coarse and I have quite a bit of hair and that's y i just want something wavy/subtle. She verbalized understanding. BUT man, she would kept curling and then use a comb to comb thru the culrs, she didn't look like she knew what she was doing. and the end product is TERRIBLE -- my hair was SOO messy, some parts were way too poofy but some weren't even wavy at all (Please see pic). She claimed that it's b/c my hair has a layer in the middle and it gives lots of volume when she curled that section. I was thinking in my mind "Why dnt you just skip that section then?" Honestly, my friends who are not professionals have curled my hair in the past and so have regular stylists (who are in SF) and it always comes out nice. On top of that, she didn't finish till 3:45 and she wanted to keep going! I told her, i really gotta go -- i still had to do my makeup before 5 When I got home, boyfriend asked "weren't you supposed to get your hair done today?" I said "this is done." He saw my reaction and knew not to question further. When I got to the restaurant, none of my friends thought it was done by a professional -- they actually thought i curled it myself!!!!! I was EXTREMELY frustrated!!! It was definitely the worst experience I've ever had at a salon. (But I still tipped 20%). For sure, will not return to headcase again. read more

Ginnette did my hair color, hair cut, and brazilian blowout. Not only did she listened to my suggestions patiently, she even gave me necessary professional opinions for my hair color afterwards. I tried the brazillian blowout after knowing it's 50% off and saw that the client next to me recommended it. Now my hair feels soooo much softer, no frizz, easy to manage. This place is a joke. I guess this is what happens when I decided to go elsewhere other than my usual salon. I never would have thought anyone could have done a worse job other than attempting to cut my hair myself (I was 8). It was as simple as layers, no color, nothing fancy. However, the results were terrifying! She snipped my hair straight across so when I comb my hair using my fingers, the tips were almost even across my back. I called the salon to make an appointment. A rep from the salon called the next day but I was informed that the stylist I wanted to make an appointment with was an independent contractor. I was given her contact information. So I called after I hung up with the rep and got a voice mail greeting from the stylist but the greeting did not give instructions to text for an appointment. I left my contact information and patiently waited for a returned call. It was 3 weeks before this person called me back! Let's say the conversation was awkward. CODE ZEBRA !!!!! I came to this salon since I had come here years before and they did an awesome job. The mistake I made is that i didn't keep the same stylist. My hair was black trying to get an ombré style w a light brown base, which is a long and diff process I understand . After a bleach wash and toner my hair came out like a rainbow!!!!! I made it very clear no red tones!!! My roots were a light brown, mid hair orange then to red on my tips and black patches randomly on my hair. She blow dried and cut my hair . I was very clear how ugly the hair color was!!!! So the owner stepped in and told her how to correct it . Then back to the sink we go for more bleach wash and toning!!!! After the second round my hair was better but still was a rainbow with black spots, better uniformed but horrible. More bleaching and toning for the last time and my hair was more uniformed but the color was reddish orange brown !!!! Exactly what I didn't want !!!! My hair still has different tones of color in random areas and marks of different colors going across like a zebra not up and down to atleast look lik a horrible highlight. My appointment was at 11 am I did not leave until 7pm without eating all day!!! I left crying of how horrible my hair looked!!! It looks like I was a Ginny pig for a student stylist trying to learn how to do hair!!! Other stylist would come see my hair and were left without words of how awful it looked!!!! My hair is completely dead and a horrible color!!! I still can't believe she would let me leave like this since I am a walking advertisement of her work. I had plans which I cancelled due to how ugly my hair looks!!! A night I cried and woke this morning praying it was a bad dream !!!! Please stay away!!!! She still charged me for this mess. And said they charge hourly but she would charge half price!!!! REALLY !!!! I was there so long because she messed up . She charged me for a cut that should have been done after all color was finished so it would take of the dead ends . Instead she cut after the first bleach and then had to bleach and tone two other times and did not cut again!!!!! She had the courage to say others would love the color you got !!!! Wooow I got exactly what I asked not to get and different colors all over !!! No one would want this color!!! My whole weekend is ruined and I do not want to leave the house of how embarrassed I am of how I look!!! I honestly feel like a clown. I'm ready to color my hair back to black to hide this but I can't do anything to my hair since its so damaged!!! Leaving the horrible hair color aside . *sigh* and my poor butchered hair grows ever shorter... as yet another amateur hacks away, exacerbating a nasty frizzy mess. As a recent relocatee I am looking for my "forever" stylist and recently tried out Headcase Salon, which is in a super cute yellow house downtown. Love the building. I will not name the stylist I went to, since I feel that all members of the salon reflect on the salon. I was somewhat apprehensive because the stylist pushed upon me was lower-level, but I was assured that her experience was not commensurate with her status (i.e. she had more experience than was reflected in her level). I specifically discussed with her my previous haircuts and how I was trying to grow out a badly layered cut. I have lived with my hair for 40 years and have had some fantastic haircuts, but I have noticed many stylists, including this one apparently, lack the skills to blend layers in my tricky hair. The stylist decided to ignore what I said (or didn't understand?) now I have dreadful, unblended layers creating a frizzy looking shelf, AGAIN, just as I had almost grown them out, including an odd new one right in the back of my head. After she was "done" I had to point out that my hair was actually not cut straight across the bottom. I remember looking at my hair in the mirror and thinking, "Do you actually think this looks okay? Like, are you proud of this haircut?" When I left I was clearly unhappy with my haircut, and she kindly offered to cut it again at a future time, but my philosophy is: why would I let someone who butchered my hair at my hair again? I'm not a guinea pig so she can try to learn how to give a good haircut. Harsh, but there it is. So, I am writing this review for the good of Yelpers everywhere: this was my experience at this salon and of course you can take it with a grain of salt. The take home: from my experience this is a mid to low range salon. A tiny step up from the $15 haircuts you can get. I will not be coming here again. read more

I guess I should preface this salon review by saying I am not a very girly girl. I don't get my hair cut very often, don't blow it dry...etc. etc. Not that I don't care how I look, but it's long and looks okay as is and with two babies, a job and the husband I've got exactly ZERO minutes extra each day to pamper myself. However, I got a groupon deal for Headcase earlier this year thinking that I should maybe try to schedule a few minutes for myself. Got that in January...how's that whole 'personal time' thing go, again, anyhow?!! Headcase: I don't think that my stylist, who also owned the shop, was too stoked that I had the groupon thing - she was kind of curt at first. (well, then....don't participate with groupon!) BUT as the cut went on she definitely made me feel much more comfortable. My hair went from long and wavy and a little unruly to a more cool, layered, healthy look. I love it. I LOVE IT. She took her sweet time cutting it. That's not meant to be rude at all. I totally appreciated that she didn't rush through it. it looks wonderful. The salon itself is really cute, a little victorian gem up juxtaposed against one of downtown's new condos. Two minute walk from the office. I'll be back...hope that I don't have to wait six months for some more personal time. read more

Best hair place. I recently had a balayage and it was perfect. The place also has a homely vibe yet chic. I thought it was little expensive but the technique and the finish sealed the deal for me. Am new in town and was searching for a salon and I think I got it. read more
