It's always good to have choices. I think this now makes for three coffee shops on SE Woodstock (First Cup, Papaccino's, and Heart). I primarily go to First Cup, so be making a lot of comparisons it's that coffee shop. At Heart I paid $4.50 for a 8 oz spicy chai, I was given the non-dairy option for free (saving 50 cents) after having complained about the lack of dairy-free options. The taste was mediocre, while the chai at First Cup, while on the sweeter side; makes a better chai. Heart has Coava Coffee, and cold brew coffee, so high marks for that. Heart Coffee is on par with most other local coffee shops, they have quality coffee, so they have that. But I think they miss the mark with it comes with their limited drink options, questionable customer service, and lack of allergen friendly food and drinks. I would summarize Heart as a good choice if you are seeking quality coffee, but aren't concerned about value; while being in a minimalist vibe with uppity staff. They have a lack of allergen friendly beverages and food, they have an almond and walnut non-dairy selection, a combination of the two. But that's all. No coconut, hemp, or soy milk. I feel they should at least have an almond milk and moreover a coconut milk option, like most coffee shops. It takes extra effort to include allergen friendly or vegan options, but it's more inclusive and I consider it to be a component of service. I heard they have gluten-free porridge, and oatmeal. However, they have no gluten-free pastry items. Really? Even a subpar Starbucks has GF options. I boycotted Starbucks over ten years ago as only 8.5% of their coffee is Fair Trade (google it, what percent of starbucks coffee is fair trade), and they are a monopolistic corporation. Come on, it's Starbucks, do I even need to elaborate? Perhaps one of the most notable aspects of Heart is there service, or lack thereof. While the cashier was good, patient, and helpful. The barista was, frankly, terrible. I remember the day, the 25th of this month, around one in the afternoon. They verbally scoffed when I asked if this was my chai, followed by "Yeah, I think that's chai, I don't know if it's Your Chai". Really? Did that attitude come for free or do I have to pay extra? The barista needs to go back to the Pearl District and can take their "Your lucky I served you" attitude, with them. I experience this kind of service too often, and I'm pretty done with it. I have a choice, and I'll choose First Cup. They have consistently good service, when when you're there you're made to feel welcomed with a more relaxed vibe. Good food including allergen friendly food options. Smaller on demand breakfast items, yes, but more pastries. Larger drink menu, and options including more allergen friendly (non-dairy, nut free) options. First Cup makes an effort to cater to those with food and drinks allergies. Not necessarily the most important thing (unless you don't have any food allergies of course) but the frequency of food allergies is so common, it's not something to be dismissed either. read more

I was in Portland on a business trip this morning and was waiting for my boss to arrive at said meeting place. Per company policy most senior member of team must purchase meals so again, I was waiting for my boss. I was on the phone giving him directions to Heart when I young Girl walked up interrupted my call and said coffee shop is only for paying customers. I was about to buy a coffee, i wasn't loiter or bothering other people. I'm a young female in business attire. I called my boss and told him to meet me at a local starbucks due to the terrible customer service. Don't go to this location. I love the minimalistic design and aspect of heart. Not a lot of fuss and great coffee. I was so excited when I found out heart was opening this location in my neighborhood of Woodstock. Their vanilla latte and cold brew are a couple of my favorite drinks. Anyone who complains about the price is silly, 5.50 for a 16 oz latte. A 16 Oz drink at a chain like Starbucks is roughly 4.65, spend the extra 85 cents and enjoy a local handcrafted latte every once in a while. read more

We got to splurge on a treat and tried Heart for the first time. Their tomato soup is absolutely delicious, and their ricatta toast with fig jam is something I won't forget. Simple, but so delicious. We also tried their mocha with house made walnut-almond milk. My husband liked it so much he got a second before we left. It was rich and creamy, with the perfect balance of bitter and sweet. I really want to love this place just a little bit more, because I work from coffee shops 4 days a week and this place just finally opened up down the street from me. Hopefully a lot of this stuff is just working out the kinks and they'll improve the longer they're around and keep getting feedback. The pros: * It's a really wonderfully warm and inviting space, gets great light in the morning, and feels very cozy even though it's on now-bustling Woodstock. I love the thick wooden tables and the live plants help to make the space feel more alive despite its industrial architecture. * As someone who often can spend 5+ hours at a coffee shop, I appreciate that their food menu goes beyond basic sandwiches and pastries. The fact that I can get a healthy option like soft eggs on spelt toast is a nice touch, and though like everything else on their menu the food seems a bit overpriced for what it is, when I'm spending 5+ hours at a coffee shop I can factor an extra dollar or so into the cost. The cons: * They only offer ONE alternative milk option. It is a house-made walnut-almond milk, and a simple latte made with this milk costs $6.50. WTF. I don't mind splurging once in awhile, even though I have never in my life paid $6.50 for a latte. But to not even offer another option?? If they had some standards like regular almond or hemp milk for a reasonable price (at most coffee shops this would be in the $3.50-$4.00 range), I could see myself getting those on a regular basis and splurging on this house-made treat every once in awhile. Sure, it tastes great. But for them to not even offer another option (nor at the condiment station if you're just ordering regular coffee) feels like a slap in the face, like they know we customers who don't want dairy will HAVE to shell out $6.50 for their house-made stuff, and makes that house-made walnut milk latte a lot less tasty than it would be without the bitter intention. * They change their wifi password once a week. Is wifi theft really such a problem? On Woodstock? I can't imagine that this is saving them from any substantial loss due to customers siphoning Internet without ordering coffee, but for those of us who come here to work regularly, it's a real hassle to have to go into your settings, forget the network, ask for the new password, reconnect...it just doesn't make sense, like the key code on the bathroom door. Being treated like a second class citizen gets old quickly. Heart is yet another coffe shop where those of us who cannot imbibe freely of sugary syrups can go chase ourselves. Having no options does not make me interested in returning. It's particularly vexing when vegan and gluten free choices are available with nothing offered for diabetic customers except one non-sugar sweetener. To the credit of the employee (who I do not blame - alienating 9.4% of the population is a management/ownership decision), he did point me to the stevia when I inquired about sugar free offerings. But stevia isn't a flavoring and I personally cannot stand the stuff. I won't be returning. If Heart wanted diabetics to be customers, they would present us with options. read more

There are two prices listed for vanilla latte so I ordered a large, I thought $5.50 is very expensive for coffee but if it's a large atleast I get a lot. Boy was I wrong. My son & I had a great visit to Heart this morning. My kiddo picked out four pastries for our family & all four were delicious! The gentleman who helped us was friendly and patient, explaining a pastry we'd never heard of--a cardamom roll with sugar sprinkled on top that was my favorite of the bunch. The prices are high but definitely worth it as a treat. They're currently to-go only & have appropriate health/COVID precautions (required makes, one-way traffic, 6-feet spacing marked, plexiglass in front of register, etc.). Highly recommend! read more

My only gripe is that it's rather difficult to communicate with anyone who is the least bit soft spoken because of how echoey it is in the space. I went there once and the coffee was as good as you would expect from Heart. As everyone already knows, it's pricey, but as most would agree, also somewhat better quality than the alternatives in the area. I would go there more often if they were open past 2pm. It took them forever to open up in the first place, and now that they've been open a few months, they are still running limited hours. I was surprised about the recent changes made to this cafe. I really enjoyed coming here on the weekends to study and get productive in the past. There is a sign now that says there is no more wifi in the weekends. Its their method of lessening the crowd on the weekends I guess. I'm surprised to see them plug all their outlets up too so that people can't charge their computers here! I can understand that they are trying to change the environment to be more conversational and interactive rather than a study cafe. I really appreciate it being both though in the past. I enjoy going to cafes that I can get some work done but I can also meet up with some friends for some great coffee. The food, coffee and EVEN tea is a bit pricey compared to other cafes. I think it's very unfortunate these changes happen. Cafes are a great place for me to escape when you can't concentrate at home and it doesn't feel as stressful as an office. Cafes are a nice place to let one's mind wander and become productive with the benefit of having delicious drinks and food served to you. First, I think the people and the beans at this Heart are great. I used to come here regularly and I love the great space and comfortable chairs. So why only 2 stars? VINEGAR smell when they make PICKLES. Yep, they make pickles. HEART, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? Coffee smell doesn't stand a chance when vinegar smell comes along. I looked to see whether they had a kitchen hood to exhaust the fumes and just weren't using it, but nope, no hood. I feel bad for the nice baristas that have to get bombarded with that all the time. Unprofessional staff experience. First time there, sat down to do some work was going to be there for a couple hours so I was waiting a little bit to buy a coffee or dish. A member from the staff interrupted me while on a call and asked if I wanted anything and I said not quite yet. She then said well seats here are reserved for paying customers and smirked at me.
