I'm with Erik H. on this. My wife and I went here on our honeymoon nearly every day after wandering in the first day just to buy bottled water. We ordered the shave ice after having gotten Jo Jo's in Waimea (which, by the way is vastly overrated). The staff at Hee Fat were always friendly and made you feel at home. The shave ice was fantastic, the blade was sharp, and the flavors are terrific. Snow caps are about the greatest thing ever invented, too. read more

Although I didn't try "every" shaved ice place on the island, the shaved ice here was superb. I got the natural flavoring and it was so delicious. A scoop of macademia nut ice cream on the bottom and the snow cap on top knocks it out of the park. They're competing in the center of Kapa'a, so there's a lot of options for tourists - they seem to go the extra mile when it comes to selection and customer service. Despite what many of the associated pictures would lead you to believe, Hee Fat is much more than a shaved ice stand. They carry a little bit of everything ... e.g.: food (nuts, creams, sauces, spices, candy, etc.); there's a shaved ice shop in-store; they sell all of the touristy things people snatch up (shirts, sarongs, various wooden products, signs, shells, etc.); and they have jewelry too. Don't buy your souvenirs here. Prices are much cheaper down the street at Sunrise Emporium or any of the other shops around the area. We saw lower prices, and after asking to return, they refused. I recommend taking your business elsewhere, and make sure to look around before purchasing. UPDATE: the store manager has reached out and offered to price match the competitor. The Kauai blue book lists this establishment as an absolute must for the Shave Ice. We had three other Shave Ices around the Island before finally making it to Hee Fat. I think this one was indeed the best. However, the one up in Priceville shopping center was right there with Hee Fat. Otherwise, Hee Fat is an upscale ABC Store (ABC store in Hawaii is like a 7-11/cheap-o gift store, not a government run liquor store like in North Carolina). Its pretty nice inside and not too expensive, all things considered. We got some salts. The Shave Ice makers were really nice and it was evident they took pride in their work. The Blue Book's endorsement is a blessing, I'm sure, but also puts the pressure on Hee Fat to deliver. And deliver they did. read more

This being our third stop for shave ice at a new location, we feel we are getting a pretty good sense of where to go for this tasty treat. Although the great blue guidebook considers this the best, we disagree. To start, it is in a store and not a self-sustaining stand. It is not as easy to find, and you are obligated to look around the store while you wait. On the plus side, it is cooler inside than out, and they do take credit cards. Secondly, there is only one person working. When in a large line waiting on shave ice, expect to be there a LONG time! Other stands have had two or three people making things, so the lines move two to three times as fast. Third, this was more expensive than the other places we visited. You can expect to spend $0.75 more on average per person for the same size shave ice as else where. Lastly, they put the ice cream (what little we actually got) in the bottom of the cup. This is an all too common thing at shave ice stands. By the time you get to the ice cream, it is mostly melted and nothing but a strange combination of your syrup run off. All that said, the flavors we had were great, although they did not have as many choices as other places either. The size is big, and they have a keiki (kid's) size too. The ice itself is that perfect fluffy consistency that allows easy consumption, but they give you one of those wooden server things instead of a plastic spoon, so every bite has a bit of bark flavoring to it... The best place for shave ice on the entire island! The real fruit syrups are incredible and you get a lot for your money. The macadamia nut ice cream is a great addition to an already delicious treat. Plus there are plenty of great souvenirs to browse through while you wait for your shave ice to be made. The best Hawaiian shave ice ever! I got the lava flow, which for anyone who doesn't know is pineapple, cocoanut and strawberry but I got it on vanilla ice cream instead of macadamia nut. Stopped in based on the recommendation from the "Ultimate Kauai Guidebook" (which by the way is a must read if you are visiting Kauai). Ordered the rainbow shave ice with a scoop of macadamia nut ice cream. The shave ice is HUGE - in face one order is probably big enough for two. The rainbow is coated with liquid vanilla bean ice cream. Tastes best with the "blue" and "green" flavoring on the shave ice. The actual highlight of the whole experience was getting to the bottom of the plastic dish and diving into the ice cream. Holy cow - awesome. read more

My kids have looked at menus of competing shave ice places and still want us to take them back to Hee Fat. The portions are huge, the presentation is adorable (love the colorful "flower" bowls), and the shave ice is as fluffy as the snow that falls back at home in Michigan. I had the Lava Flow with Mac Nut Ice cream. The only comment I can make is that they could have been a Iittle more generous with the ice cream. I had to dig for a loooong time to find it. We went to Hee Fat because someone told my hubby their Shave Ice is the best. When we got there, I was thrilled to see that they have, in addition to the usual syrups(most of which have chemical colorings), they make their own all natural syrups, also. Probably our favorite shave ice on the island. I found it through other reviewers - I thought because of all the raving the line would be huge so I was a little thrown off when we arrived and no one was there and it's in the back of a store. Seemed odd but who cares?! Lucky us!! The lady working helped us pick 3 great flavors and even pointed out the natural syrup option - which we chose. The syrups were amazing!!! Chunks of fruit. So good!! The ice was packed perfectly. She took her time and definitely made it with a little Aloha Love. Highly highly recommend!! Heads up - parking can sometimes be rough. We parked a few blocks away and then when we walked up we saw a tiny sign that made us think maybe the store had parking - though it probably would have been full. We didn't mind the walk. An OK shave ice located in one the the island's many general stores (essentially a gift shop). Review of this place were super positive and made it seem like a standout on the island but the shave ice wasn't discernible from others we had on Kauai. The service was pleasant but there was a longer wait than other places and the end result wasn't any different so it's unclear what the fuss is about. i find myself torn while im writing this review. i have insisted for the longest time that the best shaved ice on the island is at hawaiian blizzard. and i have also insisted for the longest time that shaved ice should be judged on ice quality, syrup, customer service, and NOT ice cream or any fancy halo halo stuff...but.... this place has really got the whole package, and boy am i glad i stopped by before i flew out...i've been to kauai a couple of times but have always overlooked this place because, well..of the lack of yelp reviews...glad i was adventurous on my last day ice quality: super super duper fluffy, very very light, very well done (dare i say that their ice rivals or tops hawaiian blizzard?) syrup: delicious (but may not be as good and original as hawaiian blizzard) customer service and value: 4.95 for a huge shaved ice with ice cream and snow cap (snow cap and lihingmui powder is free), decent price, and quite reasonable actually because they give you a HUGE serving of ice....the customer service was very friendly so what does this place have that hawaiian blizzard (yes, hawaiian blizzrd will be the pinnacle that serves as my comparison) doesnt have? well...1) ice cream and li hinh mui powder (although i still insist that these should have no bearing on shaved ice stand/store ratings)...2) set store hours and no island time funny business...3) humongous portion....4) maybe, just MAYBE, fluffier ice quality...and 5) takes all major credit cards (which was a real plus bc on our last day we were running out of green cash) read more

This place is a cute place to browse because it's a souvenir shop so you can buy some good gifts to bring home for people. They've got ukeleles, random toys, coconuts, postcards, shot glasses, and other signature Hawaiian items. Everything's just a little pricey though, as souvenir shops are expected to be. We came here out of desperation for some shave ice because ono ono next door was closed. The shave ice is smaller than the one at ono ono, and the syrup flavor is just too overly sweet. For the same price, I'd rather go to ono ono and get the better tasting gigantic ice. read more
