DO NOT use this service if you want to get your items back. I dropped my favorite Reformation dress off at a Ref store in April to have Hemster fix a simple loose seam. A month went by and I received no updates so I reached out to Hemster. They said the service was completed and they were waiting for a courier to pick it up, at which point I would receive shipping updates. I received no updates and reached out again after another entire month went by. They informed me that Fedex had already delivered my order, despite the fact that hemster never sent me an update it was shipped. The picture Fedex sent shows my dress delivered at the wrong apartment and that hemster put it didn't require a signature. So now thanks to hemster's complete lack of communication and entrusting the literal worst delivery service (fedex never rings bells in nyc) my $300 Reformation dress is gone. read more

After sending two emails, I received one response stating the tailors "had a question" about my order and therefore had halted production. Extremely unprofessional that they never emailed me this question weeks ago when the item was first received. There was no apology in the email. I now need this dress in the next few days for an engagement photoshoot and they will not confirm to me when the dress will be shipped. I've used Hemster at the Westfield and for their In-Home alterations, and I'm so happy with how my garments turned out. Hemster had a special in February where first time customers received a free hemming alteration. I used it for a dress where hemming wouldn't be too great an issue if something went wrong. It turned out perfectly and I can't wait to wear it this week for my bff's dress rehearsal dinner this week. I decided to try out their in-home service as I had 5 garments to alter. Angela was on time and very helpful in making sure I was satisfied with the length of each garment, and gave some suggestions for how one of my pair of jeans should be altered (because they were flare and hemming them incorrectly would give a weird bell-bottom shape). I got my jeans today, and the length is perfect. I can wear them with flats, or with some sneakers and the length is good either way. At first I thought the hem was too short, but then I realized I'm used to seeing a longer length. I'm really short, and I'm used to extra fabric dragging on my heels. I just have to get used to the fact that the length should be shorter as it compliments me better. Customer service is excellent! I've emailed many questions, and I get a response within a day. Sometimes within 30 minutes. I will say that if you do the in-home alterations, ask a lot of questions. I looked at their service menu, and I noticed the prices were different than the ones listed in my invoice. I had jeans altered, which I guess are different than pants, so they were quoted at a higher price. If alterations for jeans are different than pants (like slacks or other materials), then I wish it was specified on their website. Also, I suggest doing in-home service if it's more than just hemming. If it's only hemming, you can stop by guest services at the Westfield and ask for their rulers. It's really easy to do, and convenient for simple hemming of clothing, to be done whenever you have the time. I work near Powell, so it's been convenient for me to measure at home and drop them off during my lunch hour. Also, if you do in-home alterations, they'll email you to do a second fitting. I had already paid for the amount stated in my invoice, which includes shipping, so I guess I wasn't supposed to do that right away. They refunded my shipping cost. They want to deliver the items personally so it doesn't get lost. I really appreciate that because mail goes missing all the time. All in all, if you're like me and need lots of jeans or dresses hemmed, but don't have the time to go to an alterations shop, Hemster is the way to go. The alternations shop I used to go to was fantastic, but their hours were very inconvenient for me. Can I give these guys 0 stars? Let me list of all of the ways they've completely f***ed up a very standard job. - They came to my office for a group appointment. They measured and pinned my pants for hemming.. When I got them back, they were at least an inch too short. Much shorter than when they had measured me. - They sent someone over to re-measure and see what we could do with it, and they told me that they can taper it to make things less noticeable, but it would be an extra charge (though customer support later said that it will be free). Customer support also recommended that they re-lengthen them for me as well, and said that it's do-able and won't be noticeable from the outside of the pants. - I tried to reschedule the followup appointment to get the pants fitted after they fix it, and they got back to me with "Your pants should be ready either today or tomorrow. We'll get back to you" - I followed up on this message after a couple of days of no response, and they responded with "We just delivered your pants to your office. Please check with your front desk or mail room". - Pants were no where to be found, and the front desk person said that they delivered somebody else's clothes, but not mine. - After my next complaint, someone from Hemster decided to google our company number and called our company's customer support line which goes to a completely different location. - I later found my pants located in the building-wide mailroom's lost-and-found, with no company name or suite number on the shipping label. - I open the box.. and the pants were NOT re-lengthened. - They included a bunch of fabric scraps in this package, none of which match my pant fabric nor its color. What the hell am I supposed to do, sew these back on myself?? At this point, they really should purchase me a new pair of pants. Great concept, terrible execution. I really wanted them to work out. But once they took my clothes, all customer service stopped. They promised max 7-9 business days, even added $40 to expedite, and after three weeks I reached out to get an update. A day later they replied, said my clothes were ready, and to make an appointment. Long story short, every email I sent trying to schedule something, they'd respond 4-24 hours later saying the time wasn't available. Anyway, 3 weeks later I did finally get my clothes, and my nice suit and tux were folded into a tiny bag, full of wrinkles and dirty. They should know better than to treat clothes like this, especially nice ones! And the fit isn't great - likely the result of not having a tailor do the fitting. ie, the coats fit fine where he pinned, around the middle, but now the area around the shoulders bunches in the back on both suits. Will need to dry clean, and then tailor again. But definitely not with Hemster, given my inability to get them to do anything in a timely manner. And when I told them, all I got way a "sorry you're unhappy" email... 2 days later, of course. Time for these guys to go out of business. read more

TERRIBLE company and services. I sent in 3 items over a month ago to get hemmed. These items have been received with no status update. I reached out for a status update last week, and heard that 2/3 items were complete, and they were finishing up the third item. They said there were delays due to COVID - understandable. Today I hear back that the third item was apparently damaged in transit getting to Hemster and it could not be fixed. WHAT?! Something is NOT adding up here... why would they not notify me as soon as the items were received if this was an issue, so that I could decide what to do with the item? Now, it looks like they are trying to get another item (which they can't, it's sold out and no longer made). I'm super upset - my favorite pair of pants are ruined and I may not even get them back at this point, and my items seem like they're being held hostage by Hemster. Most tailors fit you by pinching your shirt or pants and securing that fold with a sharp pin. I'm always afraid to move around when there are a dozen tiny pins stuck into my clothes. Instead of using pins, Hemster uses these ruler stickers that let them measure my new hemline without damaging my clothes or accidentally poking me. Really is a nice modern approach to tailoring. This review is mainly for Devry, the main point of contact for clients. I'd give her 5 stars alone. I think she's the manager of all of the fitters/tailors. I had three complicated pieces: a jumpsuit that had an intricate scalloped hem, a pair of slacks that needed to be drastically taken in (think bootcut/wide leg redesigned to slim cut), and sleeves shortened on a blazer. Devry is very professional, on time, easy to talk to, and is very knowledgeable. She always dresses well which shows she knows her style. I didn't feel rushed through my fitting appointment at all. She was careful in taking the right measurements (they use tape instead of pins to minimize damage to the fabric) and even showed me options in hemming length/design to ensure what I wanted. I believe she has her own clothing design line so it's evident she's trained well and knows her stuff! I've seen her now three times and each time, she's great. She remembers the details of what I prefer and able to carry a conversation easily, though still able to keep the appointment efficient (without the feeling of being too chatty or too rushed). I also have two small dogs and she loved them and didn't mind that they were in the way. The pieces are then sent to a team of tailors and that is where I will only give 3 stars. I felt like they did a slightly sloppy job. The hem to the blazer sleeve was off and the sleeve lining was saggy. The pant hem was also slightly crooked but very noticeable. The jumpsuit was done very well given the tight turnaround time. They have a fit-guarantee so Devry came out again to remeasure and make sure they can fix the pieces. Thankfully it can be fixed and I would get them back in about a week. Again, Devry was excellent. I will also give customer service 3.5 stars. The team is very nice and accommodating so the only downside is the response time. I think it's a quickly growing company and they just need to staff up. I'm sure this will improve as the company stabilizes I would use them again and see the consistency of the tailoring work. read more

All I wanted was to get my new curtain panels hemmed--a fairly straightforward request, so I thought. The initial fitting was quick, but I waited a month to get my curtains back only to find out that the bottoms were still too long and hemmed at a curve instead of a straight line. I was told that the first fitter didn't use the standard Hemster measuring tool and instead pinned the fabric at different points. Obviously annoyed by this, I scheduled a second fitting with a different person. I waited another month for my curtains to arrive only to find out that they were still too long! Overall, this process took over 2 months and at the end Hemster failed to get my order done right. I don't even want to take advantage of the company's fit guarantee. This startup has a problem with standardization and lacks the bandwidth to process orders in a timely manner. read more

In home service with Devry was great. She had good advice to lend, would recommend. Repair of woolen sweater and jeans were both executed well. Bringing in waste and hemming two jeans was also done well. One pair of jeans which was supposed to have a hem but leave room for a cuff was cut at the hem line instead of the cuff line. They are too short and must be worn without a cuff now. I tried all of the items on with Johnson who was very nice. Overall, great service, but I guess for the complicated items, be sure to double check it was captured correctly. read more

I had learned about Hemster through a friend who described Hemster as the "best tailoring experience he had experienced". I personally hate going to tailors so I was skeptical, but having a 8-5 work week, I had not been able to find any free time to go to a tailor, so I decided to give Hemster a shot. I had 9 articles of clothing that I realized I needed to tailor and made an appointment for them to come on a Sunday afternoon. I almost decided against having them tailor all 9 because I didn't want to waste my entire afternoon with the tailor. However, in less than 30 minutes the tailor had finished measuring the all nine . That's not even the best part. Instead of using sharp pins, they used clever stickers to effectively measure the adjustments. In addition, for the first time ever, the tailor was giving me sound advice on how to tailor my clothes; From how they tailor skinny jeans to how they tailor suit jackets, I was really impressed by the Tailor's knowledge and professional expertise. If this is the experience I can get from my tailor, I am definitely going to start tailoring more of my clothes. I just received my dress after chasing it down by phone. I explicitly said I needed by today at the latest and if I had left it to Hemster, I wouldn't have had it back until Monday. I had paid for the zipper to be replaced so that I wouldn't have to worry about it breaking, and 1) I can tell it's the same zipper and 2) the zipper broke as soon as I unzipped it to try on the dress. I'm sitting here livid and in tears because not only has this been an incredibly stressful process, I will not have a dress to wear to a black tie event in a few days. It's also impossible to get a hold of their supposedly "superior" customer service: it goes to Kelly's voicemail which is full. I wanted to like Hemster because I think it's a great idea, but I honestly have had an extremely frustrating experience with them. They need to get better tailors or better customer service. I asked for a simple hem of my Birdy Grey bridesmaid dress and it came back completely uneven (the lining and chiffon weren't even the same length, and the left side of the dress is significantly shorter than the right side). They sent a fitter for a second fitting, and that fitter said he was shocked by how uneven it was and that I should ask for a refund because there wasn't extra fabric they could let out anywhere to make the hem even. He took a video and many pictures to send back to the company as evidence. Apparently that's not enough, because Hemster then informs me that they need to send ANOTHER fitter to look at it again (why are they employing fitters they don't trust to make an assessment?). This fitter comes and confirms again they can't fix it - she says I could get it cut shorter all the way around but obviously then the whole dress would be too short for me. She takes the dress away because apparently it's policy that a manager has to look at it. Customer service promises by email that it would be delivered back the next day, but now it's past 10PM the next day and I haven't gotten any response from them, despite my emails. Because of their refusal to admit that they can't do anything to salvage the dress and the constant delaying, I now won't have time to order a new one and get that altered before the wedding. For context, I started this whole process on July 13 with my first fitting -- it is now August 7 and Hemster still has my dress with no solution and no refund. read more

I moved here about a year ago from Washington DC where I had a great tailor for more than 15 years. One of the things that I worried about is that as a shorter man, I need a lot of tailoring, and I was concerned about being able to find someone as good as the tailor I used in DC for such a long time. Well, I'm happy to say that I not only found a great tailor here in SF, but one that is so quick and convenient - she comes to you! I've now used Hemster about 4 times, and every time Allison shows up at my apartment at a time that is convenient for me. She's quick with the fitting and measurements, and then off she goes with the clothes. All of the payments are done through online invoicing, and all of my stuff is usually delivered back to me within 5 business days (and often before). I use to never get things hemmed/altered because it usually takes too long, it requires me to drive else where twice to drop it off and pick it up, and I just feel like it will be less hassle to find something else. But Hemster really takes care of those problems, they are fast and right in the mall. I used Hemster when I found a perfect dress that was too big on the waist and they altered it perfectly.
