The battery in my other half's Pontiac Solstice needed to be replaced. We had taken the car to Battery Mart next door, but they were unable to assist, as the battery required additional labor to even access. Herb's Garage just happened to be right next door, so we drove over and were greeted by Daron as we were still seated in the car. As we had difficulty even getting the car to start, we didn't even want to stop the car until we were sure we could be assisted. Daron assured us the battery would not only be accessed but also that it could be replaced with an OEM one for the car. He guided us right into the bay and the mechanic immediately began to assist us. We also had the bulb in the taillight replaced as we were waiting on the battery (which did require quite an effort to reach). The mechanic was very competent and thorough. My other half and I also found Daron's customer service to be excellent, as he was very warm and gregarious. We felt very welcomed and appreciative. With the OEM battery, the involved labor to access the battery, and with the bulb replacement, we deemed the cost of $157 to be a good value in this situation. I am extremely likely to bring my other car needed to Herb's Garage/Arman's and look forward to seeing Daron again. read more

I went with my friend to buy a car at this shop and we requested some reparations to be done and even though we were told that would be done when we come to pick up the car, it wasn't. I also had a groupon for 3 oil changes. Service was good, the people I talked to there were always polite and easy going. I believe Darron was the main guy - anyway he was very courteous. My only knock was needing to schedule the oil changes ahead of time, where at the jiffy lube type places you can just roll in any time which works better for my schedule. This review is about the car repair side of the business, not the used car sales. I have taken my cars to Arman for over 15 years now. The shop is extremely clean, Arman and his son Daron are very knowledgeable, professional, and courteous, and there is a nice waiting area. For me, they rate "5 stars" in two important areas: 1. Complete and honest estimates, and 2. An absolute willingness to get it right no matter what. I tend to keep my cars a long time (the current one has 185k miles on it!) Arman will always give me a diagnosis, and then list in order of importance what needs to be done. "Karyl, you need the new brakes now. You will need new tires in 3 months. Your battery is probably another 3 months." I love the honesty and the way he helps me plan for what I will need to pay for. I have had some repair challenges, to be fair. There are always going to be times where you get your car fixed, you leave the shop, and at some inopportune time in the next few days, the car breaks down. Or starts making "the noise" again. It is these times that define a mechanic. Whenever I have brought my car back in, just driving in the shop a day or two after I left there, Arman or Daron will see me coming and run out of the shop to me, looks of concern on their faces. They truly seem upset that I was inconvenienced by having to come back a second time, and it always fixed for free, even if what is wrong now wasn't part of the original problem. I always try to be brutally honest in my Yelp reviews, and I need to tell the reader that I now consider Arman a dear friend. I do believe there is room for improvement at Herb's Garage; where isn't there? They could be a bit more accurate with their time estimates ("your car is ready now" is code for "leave your house in a hour and it will be ready when you get here".) And culturally I do think there are some miscues. I have observed Arman give someone a huge compliment and the person gets a glazed look on his face; I don't think his accent is always understood. And I know he is a big fat flirt on the outside, but he is also married for forever and would not put his business at risk or his son in an uncomfortable situation in the workplace. Solution? When you take your car to Herb's Garage, tell them everything you want and what your budget is. When they tell you the car will be done at 2pm, show up at 3pm. And realize joking and accent aside, Arman knows what he is doing AND has one of the biggest hearts I have ever met. Many places won't service a van like this and there was no wait time at all...I was concerned because many places will give you a long list of unnecessary repairs but that is not this place at all! I took my 2000 Volvo s40 for a check engine light issue. Although the repairs were expensive, Herb's did EVERYTHING to address the issue. From top to bottom they looked at and fixed everything to help me. They broke their backs to get my car ready to pass the smog test. About 8 months ago I decided to give the guys at Herb's a go with what seemed to be an unsolvable problem with one of my cars. The car was suffering from a minor oil leak that left a puddle of dark oil in my parking stall. I had the car checked out by 3 different shops on Harbor Blvd with zero luck in figuring out where the problem was originating from. I was almost at the point of giving up on the car and selling it, but Arman and Daron from Herb's put my mind at ease with their confidence in solving the issue. I have always been a bit leery of independent shops but I feel very comfortable here. I have never had to wait more than a day to get my car back. Now, I'm never pleased to have to shell out cash for car repairs - don't get me wrong. I do question whether or not the car had an oil leak at purchase as another mechanic claimed. I found these guys because they were open early on a Saturday morning, and had a convenient location, and could see me right away. They treated me very well, worked me into their schedule same day, and fixed my cars brakes (new pads and ground rotors). They also fixed a turn signal that was out (no charge), and fixed a leaky hose, and cleaned the engine. Met every time commitment they gave me, and the car was in their hands for under 4 hours, allowing me to get everything done that I needed to accomplish later that afternoon. We had a tire situation last week, and Darren went the extra mile to help out. My husband was out of town, and I had a flat tire close to home.
