** This company pays dissatisfied customers to not write bad reviews ** HES Solar was recommended to me as a preferred Sunpower installer in my area and I trusted their reputation based in the highly rated reviews online. I've been working with the company since the end of last year to try and get under the current NEM 2.0. Gene Najor (sales rep) was great and truthfully was seemingly the only positive about this whole experience. Everything seemed to be going well, I provided HES Solar with everything they asked for in a timely manner and there were no apparent issues with the project. Our installation date was supposed to be on 02/03/2023. I took off work make sure they had everything they needed. As soon as the installation crew showed up, things started to unravel. Turns out the plans/design that HES Solar put together were completely wrong. They did not take into account the conduit run to either the solar system or the EV charger in the original plans. How that happened is completely a mystery to me. Despite all that I was still willing to move forward if the company would be willing to work with me and provide me with a reasonable solution to install the system. According to my project manager Sarah Jeffers, the only way we were able to install the project is with "significant" drywall damage. The company was unwilling to provide any sort of compensation for the additional drywall damage proposed because of their mistake the first time. HES Solar was not going to provide me anything for any of the inconvenience for their mistake. I was presented a take it or leave it essentially. Apparently that decision was made by managers Brad Souza and Stacey Brookshire. I asked Sarah if the company was at least willing to pay for the paint that I had to purchase for the project ($200), as I was unwilling to pay thousands of dollars in drywall damage for the company's error. Initially she said that Brad said no and that was on me. She told me he cited the fact that the company had lost money by not installing the system when it had planned, it didn't matter that the reason the installation didn't happen was because of the company's mistake and not anything to do with me. But then when I expressed my surprise, she told me he would be willing to provide me $200 in order for me to sign a non disclosure preventing me from writing a review. As a business practice, I found that offer shocking and was never even presented with the agreement in the end. The sheer fact that I know this company offered me something like that made my decision clear to not want to work with this company, especially after the they mistakes made and the sheer unwillingness to make it right. Gene was the only one who seemed to really want the project to succeed after everything and we tried to find a solution to no avail thanks to the unwavering stance of management. I brought in another company to take a look at the issues that were apparently impossible to overcome according to HES Solar and that company told me they didn't understand why there were any issues. That company found a new route for the conduit that didn't involve the drywall damage and said they didn't understand why HES Solar made it so difficult. I don't usually write reviews, but I feel compelled to do so with the terrible experience I had with HES solar. I've never written a review before. Hes solar customer service is non existent on the weekends. Our power went out during the hottest weekend of the month. The back up battery did nothing. When you finally do get you system installed, which takes about 6 months, nobody from Hes explains how to use it. The first 2 months it was up and running we still got 1000 bills from sdge because they connected it wong. Bad from beginning to end. read more

I called Sunpower to get assistance in looking for a local contractor in San Diego because we are existing Sunpower customer and want to expand our system. We wanted an in-person visit because we have may questions on how the old system will work with the new. Scheduler gave us Hes solar in San Diego as it was the only one with inperson visit available for the date. Was given Andrew Bakaine as our consultant. He initially changed our meeting to virtual even though we wanted to have inperson. Contacted him and informed him that we wanted to have inperson because we have questions with old system and how everything will work. He agreed to do it inperson. The day of consultation, he did not show up and received email that he was skeptical on our inquiry. Very bad consultation experience. read more

I finally decided to get solar. My sales person was great! Clearly explained how the installation and funding process would go. A few bumps in the road with the project manager, but installed and working. I have one issue with the installation. My system was due a consumption meter to show the power home consumes. My system was installed in November of 2021. I have made numerous calls and emails. The answer I receive is, its another department issue! The last email from Mary Nguyen, said its the residential team. Its been 2 months of trying to get an answer. read more

Their customer service is terrible if anything goes wrong. We had our solar installed 1/2023 which was working fine. Problem is don't trust their roofing inspection as it's a joke. Just a year later our roof was leaking. Hired them 2/24 to replace the roofing underlayment and it's May and our roof is still not done!! I could make a long list of all the problems but I think you get the picture. H.E.S. Solar completed a roof replacement and installed new solar panels on my home last September (2023). Working with them was convenient and I found the cost competitive with other companies. Because there is an HOA, they provided me with all the information I needed to provide to the HOA. Even though there was a waiting period between when I signed the contract and the work began, there were many steps in between such as approval by SDGE, etc. that were handled well. It was a seamless operation with the assistance and help from the company contact, Robert Laverty, who always kept me in the loop. All steps involved in the operation were spelled out in advance and if I needed an explanation: it was provided. The roof was installed and with all the rain we have had, the timing was great- no leaks and it looks perfect. The solar system is running well and saving money. She is so upbeat and positive and so responsive it makes the experience working with HES all the better. She sent out a service technician, Juan who went way beyond and helping me out and troubleshooting a problem I had with one of the panels. Be very weary of this company. I have a water leak at the bottom of a peak on my roof and I reached out to them to get an estimate to repair. Without getting any details from my on my leak or coming to my home to inspect the problem - the agent blindly sends me a quote to put a brand new roof on my house. What a scam. Bought a home with solar from a company that went out of business. Received no paperwork or knowledge about the system other than the $33,000 solar loan I had to assume to purchase the house. Was referred to HES Solar and paid them $900 to come out and do a health check on the system, any maintenance needed, and clean the panels. They came and went without speaking to us. No idea what hey did other than spray off the panels. I was not given any paperwork or summary of findings, and I have emailed, texted, and left messages for Miranda several times over the last 2 weeks. No on will reply to me. I still don't even know what system components are installed in my home or if I got suckered into a loan on a system that doesn't even work. And now I apparently got suckered out of another $900 to get nothing in return but some sprayed off panels? So far it has been a completely unacceptable experience. Left a final message for Miranda this morning, if no one returns the call by end of day, I will be contacting Better Business Bureau as well as contesting the charge with my bank account for fraud. read more

My Sunvault battery light panel was flashing green and pink lights frequently instead of the normal white lights. I contacted SunPower and reported the problem. They sent a replacement light board for the battery to HES Solar. Miranda at HES Solar contacted me when the light board arrived at their office. She scheduled a next day installation of the light board replacement. The HES Solar technician installed the new light board the next day and resolved the problem. Unfortunately this action has impacted my SunPower app as it now shows the message "experiencing a power outage" which is not correct. I contacted SunPower and their technical support person said this is a software problem which will be resolved by them in the next five to ten days. read more

If you need installation they are prompt but if you need service for a malfunction caused by their system prepare to waste time waiting for technicians that will not be showing up or calling. I called sun power and hes the two entities do not communicate and I haven't created solar energy in over a month. Waited a week for a correction for a problem I identified and then they no show. Still not fixed and I have spent time and energy coordinating communication between two companies. Look elsewhere, you will need service one day and this is not the route you want. read more

the Process has been awful. After installation and inspection I waited patiently to hear about my permission to operate. After 3 weeks I emailed Mariana my "project manager" to find out when SDG&E would Give that to me. Oops! SDGE were waiting for HES to place a placard in the utility box. when I checked next day the placard was there. Another almost 3 weeks went by - nothing. Emailed again to find out the placard was in the wrong place. Finally 6 weeks after installation I got permission to operate. But wait, there's more. I have tried unsuccessfully to hook up to Sunpower. They have been great. I forwarded their emails to to me to HES. No response, still no hookup with SunPower. There is supposed to be a green light on the SunPower box but it isn't there. I am very disappointed with HES. I was amazed to see all the 5 star reviews. read more

HES solar did a great job for us. I am a do-it-yourselfer on many things but this is not one of them. I had no idea how much was involved. We have a 1930's house and nothing is easy. From start to finish Ross and his team really came through. Rachel did a great job with the project management, Cassandra made it easy for us to get our rebates, Paul and Carlos rocked the electrical and the solar panel crew had a complicated install on a steep pitched roof and they did it with a smile and most importantly with the proper safety equipment. We are now selling power back to the grid and no more electrical bills, wohoooooo! Also with the 30% tax credit our payback is less than 5 years. There are many solar companies out there, but if you want a company that answers your calls, communicates effectively and does good work, then these are guys. We definitely ran into some challenges as expected and they just pushed right through them. Awesome job HES solar team. read more

I had called Sunpower to check on an issue I had with my solar panels that wasn't producing energy. I found out that HES Solar were the local installers for my panels and as instructed by Sunpower, HES Solar will assess the issue and fix the problem. So when I called their office, Miranda scheduled for their tech guy to assess the issue this morning. Miranda was very polite, respectful and professional handling the issue I was experiencing. The tech guy came in, assess where the issue was and was very professional in every way possible having the respect talking and explaining things what lies ahead should anything be replaced or fixed. The internal unit was bad and a replacement was necessary however, this unit wasn't readily available and therefore he has to come back once the unit is ordered for installation. it was great working with him and this company looks like they're in path of succeeding well in their business. I await for the unit to come in and looking forward for my solar to work again properly. read more

After quite an awful experience I contacted the company and asked to speak to someone with the "power" to help me. I got a very quick response from Brad, a vice president of the company. He was very responsive and within 24 hours all of my issues disappeared. Mainly because there were no issues. After my original post my project manager finally responded and sent someone to commission my Sunpower box. At this point she told me there was an issue I was unaware of, however, in reality there was no issue. That being said, I wish I could give 5 stars because the installers were professional and did a great job, my salesperson Gene did an excellent job of explaining everything to me and Brad got the whole mess straightened out so quickly. I just can't ignore the 6 weeks it took me to get there. I believe that my experience was the exception not the rule based on all the great reviews. read more

We finally decided to get solar for our home. Best decision to have done so with SunPower via HES Solar. I first spoke with the Solar Advisor after doing an online search and was able to schedule our in-home consult. Our solar project kicked off with meeting Robert Laverty (Senior Energy Consultant) who we cannot say more positive things about. He was very thorough from the beginning. He walked us through the process of the project expectations, financial options, and customized our project. He was not only professional but personable, friendly, and was always available to answer questions. When our project was finally underway, we got to work with our amazing Project Manager (Sean Hovda). My husband and I truly appreciate his transparency in how the project will progress and what to expect as well as his ongoing communication with us. I mainly was cc'd in e-mails and my husband the primary contact, but I can tell the HES team strives to be the best in what they do. Even though it doesn't seem like things were getting done, Sean and his team were getting things done in the background. They worked closely with our HOA which we thought was going to be a barrier due to applications and guidelines, but Sean made things go so smoothly. We were expecting installation to take a while but once things with the permits, HOA were underway, the day of installation was speedy and of quality work. The installation team was on tjme and showed up when we were expecting them to show up. With that said, if you are reading this review and looking for a company that puts its clients first, is honest, professional, reliable, and transparent, the HES Solar team is the exemplary example for all solar providers/installers in San Diego. The idea Ross Williams prefers is that the Pre existing condition is discovered after the sale. This is his loophole for changing the price of the project and the scope of the work after inspecting the roof. This ignores the salesman has looked at what is obvious and clearly a tile roof. The configuration is determined at the company or by the manufacturer for the company and the existence of the tile on the roof cannot be over looked. However the proposal ignores the tile as the condition of the roof is obvious to all; Except to the clause Mr. Williams wants to exercise. A pre-existing condition is: Any condition that's newly diagnosed during the look-back period. Your "look back period" would be the three day right to cancel under California's Home Solicitation Sales Act. This is for the buyer but this is the time for the seller to disclose any potential defects in the agreed to contract. Rachael Williams (not related) explained that HES does not contact the buyer during this period to not induce any pressure on the buyer. The buyer of course is left wondering what happened and why no one is calling to tell them when the work will start. After the three days the buyer is compelled although you claim that you will just let them out of the contract after they have finally committed to work with you, unless they pay several thousand dollars for roof work to make the work site easier for you. The tile roof is not newly discovered after the contract was signed. It is clear that this is the site and the basis for the construction. There is no newly discovered condition. The CSLB says so too. They have requested a complaint be filed so they can get involved. SunPower, the solar panel manufacturer, is also interested in this behavior. Given that the tile roof is the job site,and one of the most important aspects of the installation, and the salesman and company have seen the tile roof, and propose the work on that basis, yet prefer to claim that a newly discovered condition negates the contract if it suits them. This is ludicrous. Photo of the roof is the 47th photo above and shows three levels of the tile roof. There can be no mistake; unless...?!? And additionally, you are contractually obligated to me to answer my calls for service and you are not doing that. My calls and texts go unreturned and there are problems I need answers to. read more

HES was able to (barely) get me on contract before the NEM2 deadline. Generally things were fine, the install team did a nice job and cleaned up after themselves. The electrician who replaced my main service panel does clean work. No further complaints other than early-on communication. SDGE sucks but everyone already knows that and much of HES delays are just waiting on SDGE. read more

I see that HES has received great reviews. Unfortunately, when I attempted to get a bid on the Tesla Powerwall (we already have solar panels and were looking for solar battery energy storage), I was not provided with a useful bid. Here is a copy of the letter I wrote and even with two attempts to reach out to the salesperson, Triston, and then again on their website to a supervisor, I have not received any reply: Hi Tristan, As I communicated via text, I wanted an estimate for both a quantity of one Tesla Powerwall, as well as the estimate as you provided for two. I also had expected the bid to have a breakdown of the costs. What adds up to $38,999? How much is the equipment/battery, how much is labor/installation and does your company charge for the county inspection if that is required for battery storage installation? Finally, I was expecting some information about the Self-Generation Incentive Program. My understanding is that the manufacturer or the solar company applies for that. It would be really important information for me to know whether there is a greater financial incentive if I buy two Powerwalls versus one. Please provide me with a more complete estimate as requested above and if you are not able to do that let me know if there is someone else from your company that can provide that basic information about such a significant financial investment decision. This is by far the worst company we have worked with. After reading previous reviews, I 100% agree that this is a non-responsive company. After the sale has been made, the customer service doesn't seem to matter to them anymore and they will not reply to your emails or return your calls. We started our solar project April of 2023 and to this day we are still having problems with the company. After they installed the solar panels, they told us we needed to upgrade our main service panel and it would cost us an extra $4,500. Absolutely ridiculous how this wouldn't be checked BEFORE they put up our solar panels so we can make an informed decision on whether to move forward. After the main service panel was upgraded, they mislabeled all the switches. We had roof repairs, they recommended 75% of the roof so we went with the recommendation and the roofers only repaired 50% so they had to reschedule a day for them to come back and do the other 25%. After 3 different project managers and a bunch of issues we thought we were finally good. Nope, turns out, the company has no record of our project ever being completed, no record of a final inspection. It truly has been nothing but problems with this company and no one takes any accountability. Do yourself a favor and look for a better company. read more

Had a great experience with HES Solar. They performed my solar install around the beginning of the covid pandemic (just getting to writing a review now). I installed a 4kW system of Sunpower a-series panels and an upgraded electrical panel. The install went great. They worked with my roofing contractor on any logistics and impacts to warranties (since my roof was getting replaced about the same time). I did not like their initial proposal for routing the conduit but they worked with me and we found an alternative path which was less visible. Additionally, the color matched the new stucco perfectly. I need to learn their color matching tricks. One item to note is to make sure you are getting consumption monitoring as well as production monitoring if you are looking for this type of reporting in the app. You have to make sure this fits in your existing electrical panel and I'm not sure this was discussed with my friends install. Additionally, the Sunpower App does not allow individual panel monitoring. If you want to do this, it must be done on their heritage web app and is somewhat janky and requires flash. Not a ding on HES but SunPower should provide this detail in the main App. This is a big ASSUMPTION but it seems like they don't want the customer to monitor/determine if one panel is not meeting the efficiency marketed. This would lead to increased service call/warranty claims and I don't think they want the customer to easily determine this. Not sure if this is true, but it's the easiest conclusion to make. That being said, they do claim to monitor this performance (which means it could be in the app!) and if there is an issue, will proactively fix it. There was one snafu during installation. The consumption monitor was hooked up incorrectly. HES rectified the problem but it took a little bit of time. If there is one ding (not enough to reduce a star) I was not overly impressed by the communication level during this period that I needed to get the consumption monitor fixed. One other slight ding is that HES has a monetary referral program in which I recently took advantage of. One of my friends has already installed a solar system on his house through HES. Since that has happened, they haven't been great on communication on the status of this referral bonus either. Maybe I just need to be more patient. Other than these two minor gripes, I worked with Bryan for the initial proposal and Cassandra as the project manager. Both were very helpful and very courteous the entire time. I am a bit high maintenance as a customer (engineering background) and Cassandra navigated my needs very well. Would recommend. read more

After I was "pitched" by another solar company this summer (the kind that walks around neighborhoods ringing doorbells on the weekend), I started doing some research and asking around for a solar contractor. My friend Mark had a very large system on his house in Poway that I'd admired for a couple of years - guess who installed it? Home Energy Systems (HES). On his referral, I got hold of a fellow named Cassidy straight away and he came out to explain everything to my wife and I. He was proud of the quality SunPower panels they utilize, extremely clear about how the tax credits and loan worked and answered every question we could think of about the process. While it's frustrating to have to wait for SDG&E and the City to do their inspections, etc., the guys at HES were friendly, clean and fast working at every step. Rachael (the project manager) was totally available and kept us abreast of the schedule and everything throughout the process. Whenever I had a question during the install phase, she was super prompt getting back to me. Cassidy also recently came out for the final walkthrough and gave me some tips on the monitoring software. Overall, I was pleased with HES and their professionalism. My system is working perfectly, we're saving money and now even considering an electric car for the first time ever! We found their prices to be better than anywhere else we looked and the folks there were extremely responsive, organized, and helpful. They arranged the installation around our vacation schedule so that our young family wasn't disrupted by the noise on the roof.
