They are clearly short handed and need more than 2 people working here. There were 2 people before us, yet it took 30 minutes for our food to arrive. I ordered a clam chowder soup in a sourdough bowl, as described on their menu. I am sensitive with gluten, however my stomach can tolerate sourdough so I was happy to see they offered bowls since they don't have sourdough for sandwiches. After a few slurps and bites, I realized it was not sourdough but rather a sweet dinner-roll type of bread. My order was to-go, therfore it was especially frustrating that I could not ask for an alternative such as a salad. In short, I ended up paying $7 to only eat soup. Folks, if you are not going to serve what you advertise on your menu, you need to LET PEOPLE KNOW. This, coupled with the lengthy wait time is sufficient to send me packing and not want to step a foot into this establishment ever again. read more

Delicious food, good service, and quaint little house. Their coffee is yummy too. I've been there several times and have always enjoyed their fresh made bread that's imprinted with Heskas name. My only criticism is that the portions are a bit small for the price, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it. read more

Love this little place! Didn't know it was here since there aren't many businesses directly around it that I have an interest in going to, but finally got myself in recently and was surprised at how great it was. Loved their roast beef and clam chowder for lunch and also went for breakfast. Who knew that they had a delicious breakfast sandwich and coffee?? Will be back to try more. read more

Great place to get a soup and sandwich combo. I got the ruben and a cup of their clam chowder. The sandwich was good, but the soup was outstanding. Tasted like I was getting a cup of chowder at a seafood restaurant by the beach. The service was great, and as other posters have testified, the owner is very nice. She came out to make sure we liked our food. When she found out it was our first visit, she gave each of our boys a complimentary brownie. I got a blended ice vanilla drink to go. It had a great coffee flavor. I can't wait to return to try other soup/sandwich combos, and other coffee drinks. An added note; my brother-in-law said their biscuits and gravy are fabulous. Had lunch with my husband here. I walked in and felt like I was in an antique store. It smelled like old dusty furniture. They weren't busy but neglected to greet us as we entered the door. The man behind the counter never bothered to turn around. The lady proceeded to help us but after I saw her dirty hands I was turned off. I didn't order anything, not even a drink. My husband had a sandwich and salad and he was ok with eating because the lady didn't make the food. (I wasn't interested...she still had to bring it to the table.)The sandwiches are overpriced as far as I'm concerned and the best thing they have going is their fresh baked bread with their logo branded on it. Heska is amazing! She welcomes you into her restaurant and makes you feel right at home. This place has a cozy homey yet clean feel to it. She doesn't bat an eye at asking for customizing your food although I tried not to ask for too many modifications, trust her she has it dialed in. I had the breakfast sandwich which was bursting with flavor and was very filling. I also had the iced coffee which was the perfect balance of strong coffee flavor versus the sweet cream. We've passed this on the way to the mountains for years without stopping in, but today we had a wonderful taste treat. We had a breakfast sandwich and the Mongolian beef sandwich. Both were very flavorful. The building has a lot of character with eclectic decorations, a record player with vintage records, a newspaper from 1945 about the US invasion of Iwo Jima, and nautical pictures. We had a whole room to ourselves at 11:30 am on a Sunday morning. I'm glad we found it, and next time we'll come with the kids. read more

I was SO grateful to find Heska's during a long road trip. The plants and cheeriness soothed my eyes. The option of half sandwiches soothed my flat wallet. The food is prepared in full view - you can watch every step, if so inclined. My BLT was just right, my iced coffee fresh and strong (it so often isn't). Heska's, easily one of my favorite places. Everyone is talking about how great the owners are. It's true, they have probably given me the best service out of all the places I have been to. I can say that they make every customer feel valued and Heska never is shy about making conversation. It feels like home! Maybe I should actually talk about the food too... The food is goo-no, amazing. My favorite has to be the Mongolian Beef sandwich with the oriental salad. I remember my first bite of the sandwich. I had to pause for a moment to grasp all of the awesomeness of it. I love the atmosphere here. I definitely have to make more visits here and try more of their stuff! Living in the IE, there aren't many brunch selections so decided to venture somewhere new, near the University of Redlands area. First thing is that they do not have central A/C in the place, so it is not the "coolest" atmosphere on a hot day, but they do have a sufficient breeze with their fans set up around the place. Has a very homey feel. You don't get served, you order up at the deli but they do bring you your food and also check up on how you are doing and refill your drinks which is nice. The owner like many of the reviewers say is a very hospital lady. I personally got the #2 combo which comes with :half sandwich/soup or salad/drink, for $9.95. Had the Italian sandwich, honestly nothing special but reminds me of a sandwich that one could make at home, and the ingredients were fresh so no complaints there. Broccoli cheese soup, was quite tasty, considering I usually don't go for the richer soups, I didn't think it was too salty or cheesy so was a perfect compliment to the sandwich. I think the #2 combo might be a bit small for one with a heartier appetite, but I left perfectly satisfied. I didn't personally get beer while I was there, but did see someone order a newcastle and they gave him the bottle with a FROSTED beer mug, so I'm sure that can be a treat on a hot summer day. Don't think I would be a regular, but wouldn't mind returning. read more

What a gem! We were driving down from Big Bear and stopped by here for lunch. It looks like it might have been converted from a house or something, and we weren't sure if it was open because there weren't too many cars outside - but once we went inside, we saw quite a few people. The decor is cute and quaint. I had the half turkey cranberry sandwich with oriental chieken salad combo, and bf had the full mongolian beef sandwich with the oriental chicken salad. The bread was so soft, and lightly toasted! Later, the owner, Heska, came out and told us that their bread is homemade, and their dough is never frozen. The mongolian beef sandwich was super flavorful and spicy! Turkey cranberry was awesome too, but I think mongolian beef was better. The oriental chicken side salad was fresh and perfectly dressed, with wonton crunchies and mandarin oranges. Combos come with a soda/ice tea, and choice of a soup, salad, or chips. If you get a half sandwich combo, it'll be around $8. A full sandwich combo is around $9.40 - I recommend the full (you'll be able to finish the whole thing). Next time I go to big bear, I'll be sure to stop by again. read more

This place is kind of out of the way and easy to drive past but totally worth the stop. We got there right before they were thinking of closing for the night and the hostess was so hospitable and friendly, despite how late we got there. Perfect stop for leaving Big Bear if you need an afternoon pick-me up. The coffee, which initially ran out, was very good and served in cozy coffee mugs. The club sandwich is large, filling and tasty. But the best part of the sugar shack was the building itself and staff. I have wanted to try this place for a long time and it did not disappoint. Immediately when I walked I liked the decor. You have to walk around to see just how uniquely decorated the inside is. Even outside was very cute. I walked up to the counter and told the lady it was my first time. She told me that the bread was baked fresh daily and about the specials. I ordered a toasted ham & cheese with a cup of broccoli cheese. When my food came out, it looked amazing. The sandwich was stuffed with ham and cheese, the cheese was melted perfectly, and the delicious soup was served in the cutest cup. I only have two complaints. First, the pickle tasted funny. How do you mess up a pickle? And second, Fox News was playing very loudly on the TV. Fox News not something I want to listen to while I am trying to have a relaxing lunch. I love this place. Great sandwiches, great coffee, adorably eclectic atmosphere, free wifi; what more could you want?? The staff are very friendly, and always seem excited to see you, whether you're new or a regular. They also make all their own bread, and adorably stamp each loaf/sandwich roll with their own name. (I've always wanted a French roll that said 'HESKAS' on the side, I just didn't know it.) I've not had anything on the menu other than the sandwiches, so I can't speak to those, but I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a cute lunch/coffee spot. read more
