After seeing all those glowing reviews for this place, my daughter & I decided to take a drive out to Mentone Beach for lunch at Heska's. I checked their menu online before leaving the house and really had my taster set on a meatball sandwich.
As we walked in through the rear door, it was quite apparent that this place is appropriately named, it is literally a shack inside. I would not be able to bring my mother here as it is definitely not ADA handicap accessible. More likely than not this building was originally a 100 year old small house that was converted into a restaurant. There's hardly any room to turn around near the counter where you place your order, and even the kitchen staff were constantly running into each other.
There were no menus available as we stood in line waiting our turn to place our order, but we figured "so what" since we had checked their online menu before leaving the house. Once we made our way to the counter & tried to place our order, I was informed that they did not have any meatballs that day. WHAT!?!?!? How do you NOT have something as basic as meatballs? So I had to grab a menu and quickly decide on a replacement entree so as not to hold up the people behind us. Since my brain was telling my tongue that I still wanted something made of cow flesh, I chose the Mongolian Beef sandwich and their Friday specialty of clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. My daughter decided to just have a ham sandwich. We took a quick look at the desserts on display under the counter, but nothing looked very appealing, so it was no dessert for us.
The indoor seating area looked to be quite dark & cramped, so we sat outside at the equally cramped front porch. Thankfully they have an overhead shade structure to keep the sun off my almost bare noggin'. The tables were so small that two people at a table barely had room for a plate & drink, but I was trying to be forgiving since we were in Mentone Beach after all. Not much in the way of culture or panache out here in this town. Considering that the noon lunch time crowd swamped this place shortly after our arrival, our food was delivered quite promptly. What caught my eye is that they brand their name onto the sandwich rolls. Nice unique touch.
My daughter's brain is still not yet fully cooked, so I take her comment with a grain of salt that her ham sandwich was the best she had ever eaten. I did take a bite of her sandwich but wasn't as impressed as she was. Especially since my Mongolian Beef sandwich was such a huge disappointment. Perhaps my expectations were just too lofty. I was expecting a sliced beef sandwich covered with scallions, chilis, and beef gravy or au jus with perhaps a bit of soy or hoisin sauce, but it was just a very plain Jane beef sandwich with some peppers & chili's on it to give it some heat. Now the clam chowder on the other hand would have been absolutely #1 delicious if I could only excuse the use of the rubbery canned clams, which was very apparent. This chowder and fresh sourdough bread would absolutely rock your taste buds if it were made with fresh clams. Some fresh quahogs cooked just prior to being served in this wonderful cream sauce & sourdough bowl would be like going to chowder heaven.
Another reviewer posted that Heska's is the best thing in Mentone, but please remember to keep that statement within the context of being located in Mentone. Howsumbutever, we did score an A+++ by driving past the Redlands Airport and finding a small mom-n-pop farm shack at the west end of the airport. When we walked inside, the owner was just walking in from the fields with a bucket of fresh picked blueberries. We took two quarts home with us, as well as a jar of blueberry preserves. DELICIOUS!!! read more
