Well, I hadn't had sushi from here in a bit. I sure misses it! We came in on a Thursday evening and the two of us were seated quickly. We got the deal special where you can get an appetizer and 3 rolls for a set price. Loved that they had no rice options as well. We got the garlic edamame as the appetizer. It is that good. Saucy, garlicy, and topped with sesame seeds. Yum! We kept the sauce to deep our rolls in. Try that, you might like it. We choose a cucumber wrapped roll. It is so fresh and tasty without any rice. Next, we tried a roll that was wrapped in a wonton wrapper. Delicious. Third roll, it was topped with salmon. It had a smoked, bacon-y flavor. Definelty a new favorite. It was served with a sauce, which was vinegar like, but our server couldn't say what it was called. We also got the tempura roll called Las Vegas roll. Good as always with the cream cheese. I normally don't go for tempura rolls, but it was perfect. Not oily at all. Service was great. They do take awhile to make your rolls even when it is not busy. I can't wait to return. My first time and I'm impressed! My bf and I came without any expectations since we were just hungry and in the mood for some sushi. We came around 7 on a Friday night and there wasn't a wait. The hostess greeted and seated us promptly, then explained the specials on the menu for the day. It sounded good but we weren't in the mood for lobster. We ordered the sushi combo (10pc combo of salmon, yellowtail, albacore, and tuna). The pieces came out a little thick, which made it kind of chewy. I know some people really dislike the thickness of sashimi, but it wasn't bad. I asked for extra ginger and they gave me extra extra extra ginger. Thanks for the generosity. I hate asking for multiple times. The fire cracker roll was solid good. Flavorful, but it could be a little spicier. The picture on the menu has a pepper next to it, but it wasn't spicy at all. The most shocking order of the night was the Bulgogi! I know, we ordered a Korean dish at a sushi place, but it was surprisingly delicious. The meat was tender, mildly sweet, and very moist. It obviously wasn't busy and we were the first customers but as time went by it did get busier.We both ordered the lunch roll specials: 1 appetizer or salad and 2 rolls for $16.95 Appetizers ordered: **Ahi Tuna Tostada - I'm always wary about ordering raw since we aren't THAT close to the ocean but the tuna tasted fresh and great. It was definitely different eating it with essentially a tortilla chip, but it was great. **Dragonball - Not my favorite thing. It's very simple, deep fried shrimp with crab, eel sauce, and mayo. Average and probably won't order it again. Rolls ordered: **Lion Roll - Tasted good. Salmon wasn't over baked but there seemed to be an excess of mayo. Other than that, it was delicious. **Crunch Scallop - I enjoyed the deep fried scallops on the side but they were kinda small. The roll was shaped at a decent size and wasn't difficult to eat. **Monster - I personally wasn't a fan but my friend seemed to enjoy it. The sushi is decent enough but after some time of sitting inside, it gets uncomfortably warm in the restaurant. As a result, the rolls come out warm. I like my sushi on the cooler side. Tastes fresher that way for sure. They need to turn on or up the A/C! I cannot stand mayo but alas, most of the items like the crab are premixed so it was just something I had to live with on just about everything I ate. My fave was the popcorn lobster roll. I did like the price. 2 people can share a lunch or dinner special. Dinner was 3 rolls, an appy (small portion of garlic .- too much soy but loved the garlic slices) for $21.95. Lunch is $16.95. I was intrigued by the flavored sake (3 types, apple, lychee and peach) I tried the peach on recommendation. Not bad but you have to like it sweet. Service started out ok with drinks but with hardly anyone there, it took us a long time to order and no one checked in on us to see if we even liked the food. I've come here twice, and the service was amazing. The server was really kind and patient. I've gotten teriyaki chicken both times, and I enjoyed it both times. It comes with slices of orange, which is a good palette cleanser from the heavy teriyaki sauce. I recently had the dinner portion of the teriyaki chicken, which was served with salad and soup. The only bad thing I could say was that there could've been less ginger dressing on it because I have gotten many bites of over saturated pieces of salad. The miso soup was hot; I burned my tongue on it, but I suppose that was my fault. Other than that, the soup was delicious! I also ordered the Lion King roll, which was a baked salmon roll with masago on top. They were pretty small rolls compared to other sushi places I've been to. I originally wanted to order from Mimotto tonight but they were already closed so I read the reviews and decided to give Hi Sushi a shot. Now I usually enjoy Love Sushi. In fact, they were my favorite but as of late I've been severely disappointed in them. Well I ordered the Calloway Roll and the Washington Roll while my fiancé got the shrimp tempura and the Monkey one. We LOVED all of it! Every single roll. My least favorite was the monkey one but it was still pretty decent. I can't comment on the restaurant itself because he picked it up for us but he said it was pretty nice inside lol. Also, I didn't even get a chance to take a picture since we both scarfed down all four rolls in minutes while telling each other how much we loved each one with our mouths full! We will definitely be going again and Love Sushi is being pushed further and further away from my favorite sushi spot. read more

After my sister tried it out, she told me it's just ok and you get what you pay for maybe less. She also commented that she would not be returning as sushi needs to be high quality. The place was busy and normally willing to wait, but on a lunch break, I was stressing out. While waiting for our appetizers, we saw a table leave without placing their order. Other tables looked anxious and seemed to be waiting a while for their food as well. Alas, the appetizer arrived. The cheese was not even melted. The dish was pretty much cold. So one appetizer arrived, now where is my salmon collar? Server said it's on its way. Rolls come out 20 minutes after the scallop. The rolls were just average. It's maybe a step up from Love Sushi, but much lower quality than others in town. I've tried some of the best sushi restaurants all over (No, not in Bakersfield) so I know what high quality is. And Hi Sushi does not come close. So when in Bakersfield, I really have to lower the standards for sushi. Anyways, we finish our rolls and we are still waiting on our salmon collar. I asked the server to just pack it togo because we are out of time. I ate the salmon collar when I got home, again, meh. Is Hi Sushi cheap? Yes, but i'll save my money for Sushi Ota in SD. Came here for a birthday dinner on a Monday evening. We had called ahead (ok, we were driving to the restaurant, but still...) and were greeted and seated upon arrival. We had trouble finding it, mainly because, based on the Yelp reviews and photos of the elaborate platings, I assumed this place was a classy sit down restaurant. First impression? The exterior is nothing to rant about and walking in I had to double check and make sure this wasn't Love Sushi. You see, I don't know, still after dining here, if I am to call this place a sushi joint or restaurant because it was small and short staffed (1 waitress waiting on 25 people; yes I counted). Paper napkins and sushi special menu dated May 2014...I was just...just....so confused. The food? Well I ordered a cucumber special roll. Fresh crab, avocado, radish wrapped in cucumber. I specifically asked the hurried waitress if this is all crab or a crab mix (like with mayo?). She said fresh crab. Well there was three of us at the table and plates came out one at a time. Dish 1. 3 minutes later. Dish 2. 5 minutes later. Dish 3 - my dish. And guess what? No radish. No avocado. Just cucumber crab and MAYO. Yep...it was indeed crab mix. There goes my girlish figure. The other dishes fared okay. Sashimi was good. Edamame on the house was a nice touch. And fried green tea ice cream with a candle and song was extremely thoughtful. I'll give it a go again. One of the better places for sushi in town, however the service needs an overhaul. This is the 3rd time I have had very poor service, in which 2 out of these 3 times, we chose to sit towards the back. It seems that the owners wife, tries to micromanage too much, and not let the other waitress actually do her job. The owner's wife sat us this evening, while we waited to place our order about 10 mins, she seats a family of 4 next to us. Both of our tables waited to place our order for another 10 minutes. The only reason why we got our order in was from me making eye contact with the waitress that wasn't even in charge of our tables who took our orders. Then another 10-15 minutes goes by, the table with the family gets their edemame and we have not. Then, the owners wife, goes back to their table to give them miso soup, in which she had to ask the other waitress where it's supposed to go which was indeed their table. I inquired about our edemame, since we placed our orders right before they did and the owners wife said it's "on the way, the garlic edamame?" In which I had to correct her since I saw my boyfriend mark the regular and she had the nerve to tell us we didn't order it. Then she after 5 minutes came back with cold, unsalted edemame. We snacked on the edemame and wait. Nobody in sight for another 15 minutes. Then when we think we are getting our order, no...the family of 4 gets their food. We wait again for another 10 minutes, they bring out more food for the family. I then ask about our food. The owners wife then, said "your order is next. Sorry, we are so busy." Then my boyfriend chimes in and told her that we were here well before the family. It seemed to not register to her right away, that yes, we were at the restaurant first and placed our order before theirs. Finally, about 15 mins after that our order arrives. She states which roll is which, we dig in since we are starving. And I had to request more water, since she obviously isn't attentive to the back half of the restaurant, didn't offer my boyfriend more soda. She slopily pours my water and walks off. I proceeded to dig into what should have been the salmon lovers...it was not the roll we ordered. I wasn't going to argue or make a scene. I had very little appetite after this. Another 20 minutes goes by and she finally pays attention to us since we both were just sitting and staring at her as she was about to walk to the kitchen area again. We paid our bill, took the remainder of the food home even the horrible California roll based one that was wrong. We verified the item with a takeout menu. It looks like we might be on the search for another sushi place, bc the service is the absolute worst and I cannot deal with horrible service even if the food is good. read more

My only comment would be is that I wish they would label the rolls for us. Since we order so many items it is difficult to know which one is which. RESERVATIONS ARE AVAILABLE :) I also recommend calling for operating hours (we were told that the yelp info is extremely outdated by an employee) We all got the dinner special which includes one appetizer OR salad and 3 rolls (fresh/ tempura/ and baked) for about $24. I do recommend looking at their menu online before going because there are so many choices. It took us a little while to decide what we wanted. Also be sure to choose the rolls that are available for the special as not all the rolls on the menu can be chosen. The available rolls are marked with a little hand next to it. These rolls were BIG and definitely satisfied us. We all took some home for later because there was so much food. I did wish the rolls were a little cooler. Especially the fresh rolls. I understand that tempura and baked rolls would be warm but the fresh roll temperature was not quite to my liking. One con was that the kitchen isn't very organized. We got 2 specials and they completely forgot about one of the appetizers until halfway through our meal. I also ordered an extra tuna roll which I didn't recieve until after we were given boxes to package our food to go. The kitchen forgot about it.
