So I've not heard of Highway House until my galpal suggested having dinner here. Since I always enjoy trying out new places, I was all aboard for an outing here. Located on a somewhat quiet stretch of Northwest Highway north of Bryn Mawr, one can easily drive by this House. The website notes their standards, including playing a selection of music, cleanliness, fresh ingredients, and lighting. Another standard for them might be the absolute friendliness amongst their crew. I'd probably be a regular here if I lived nearby. The central bar area held a decent crowd, but we snuck up to the elevated dining level and somehow we were the only diners there during our mealtime. My friend describes the cozy feel of this place, and I'd agree with that. I was just staring at this stair detail decorated for the holidays. We split an order of Southwestern egg rolls, which were tasty and very crunchy. The golden brown egg roll shells did remind me of the unmistakable crunch of my dad's old school egg rolls. I ordered the Reuben style Irish Beef, a grilled rye sandwich with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and sriracha mayo. I went with the half-pound option which was a hearty substantial sandwich, and I took about a third of it to go. I can only imagine how massive the one-pound version would be! I always favor a toasty sandwich cut diagonally, and this cut fits the bill. The side of fries was nice and crispy. My galpal went with the chicken wrap, which looked like a healthy selection, and it also came along with a side of fries. First time I came here we ordered burgers, but we saw the BLOODY MARY'S menu I knew we had to come back. the burgers were delicious, juicy very filling, very well put together. I will definitely be craving these burgers in the future. NOW the bloody marys omg, they are so fun. depending on which one you get, we got the biggest one which I think is like 64-68oz ? that within it self is a meal. To name one of the toppings are, wings, sliders, cheese, olives, pickles.. SOOOO GOOD. Also, when you're seated they give you like some sort of bread that is so delicious. The restaurant itself is very cute, very homie. very quiet and welcoming. There is nothing bad to say about this place. Will be coming back soon! read more

The food is hit or miss here unfortunately. Burgers were okay, but the wings were greasy & overcooked (burnt greasy breading swimming in a puddle of oil/wing sauce). Beef stroganoff used to be fantastic, but again hit or miss & it was terrible last time. We could see past some of the inconsistencies if the owner was even remotely nice or welcoming, but that is definitely not her strong suit. read more

Hate to give a 1 star review. This place looked cool, but the bartender was a little slow and very much didn't know what was going on. The receipt didn't make sense to us so we asked her for clarification. And we got none. We ordered 4 bourbon shots (2 a piece) and two beers. I have posted about this restaurant before, but never in a poor review! My spouse brought home a meal described as "Our own, best in town!! House cured corned beef and Swiss cheese served on rye bread"- this was called their "Chicago Irish Beef" for $13.50; it is so sad to see that owners do not look at what their staff is giving to their customers , and expecting us to continue to support this restaurant ! I must be spoiled, as I do NOT believe that being Irish means that you have to accept that your corned beef is chock full of fat and gristle!! My dog did not even want to look at this food! And the bread was doggy, there was no cheese, and their fries were not what they used to be. I've been here twice, and the food was good and worth coming back for. Won't be back after today. It's 84 degrees today and no air conditioning. Not ok. No more credit cards--cash only. I can live with that to a point. Most importantly, someone had an absolute tantrum in the kitchen--yelling, swearing, and something got thrown or shoved and created a loud banging noise. I live close by and have been wanting to try this place for months. Went for Sunday breakfast and it was - meh. Patio is nice except for bees, food was OK not great (we had chicken & waffles and biscuits & gravy) but we ordered orange juice that was the worst I've ever had anywhere - it was the wrong color (yellow not orange) and very diluted because they served it in a rock glass FULL OF ICE. I thought about asking for a new serving with no ice but didn't bother because I don't even think it was real orange juice, more like a powder mix like Tang - yuk. Unlike other reviews, our server Nicole was great, friendly and attentive so I have no complaints about the service. But it's A BAR that serves BREAKFAST - can't believe they don't invest in decent OJ. They have a whole menu of Bloody Marys if that's your thing (not my thing) - gotta wonder if they use real tomato juice... I don't think I'll be back and would not recommend it to others. read more

For a casual restaurant/bar this place was great. It has a good vibe inside and out. we sat outside on their lovely patio with chairs, tables and umbrellas. Service was good, friendly and attentive. We both had salads that were fresh and crisp. Mixed greens, fresh chicken, they are able to substitute and understood gluten free. The portion was perfect, not a stupid oversized salad that is all lettuce and you can't finish. As for payment, they do accept credit cards but are asking that you pay in cash to keep their credit cards costs down and not have to raise prices. Having had a retail store, I fully understand. Not sure about all these glowing reviews..Where to start...The service was horrible we got one setup for 4 people, and had eaten half our meal before getting any more silverware. Got water after we started eating. Waitress was busy but had attitude like she could care less. Now to the food, it was just bad. I was shocked based on all these reviews did I miss something? Got a taco salad that's was the most pitiful looking thing I had ever seen, the salad literally made me sad :( Ordered a chicken wrap, it was okay except the crappy ranch dressing was a bit too much eeehhhh it was okay at best. The burgers wow was it bad and I thought how can you mess up an angus burger? They ran out of buns so gave us Texas toast that had been buttered to death on the griddle greasy. To start off... curds were decent but greasy and kinda soft. Next... chicken sandwich both fried and grilled. Asked for pickles and got some niicceee thick slices. Yum. Water was filled 4 times! Ice was in there as well. Environmentally cautious - no straws but paper naps. There was a space heater in the bathroom. Nice and toasty warm while doing my business! We visited last night and wow, if you don't want COVID-19, don't come here. Our waitresses mask was around her chin the entire time, she served our beer by holding it at the opening with no gloves. The owner or manager in the plaid shirt walked around the entire time, talking to the patrons with no mask on. Can't imagine what's going on in the kitchen. The taco salad wasn't good at all, it was some dry chicken, lettuce and cheese. It was a chicken salad, not a taco salad. Will not be returning, too bad too, because they have a nice patio but it's not worth it if I have to worry about if I will catch COVID-19. read more

This place is a hidden gem. You'd never think that this small place in the middle of a bunch of factories and nothingness would be so amazing, but their corned beef is delicious. They also have awesome cheese curds that are out of this world so everyone needs to go try those. I cannot wait to explore the menu more. As for atmosphere, the place feels like you're at home because it's so small and cozy. The owner is also a sweetheart and she always says hi to every single person who walks through the door. Looking for a reasonably-priced cozy spot to catch up with a friend on a cold evening, I chose Highway House. I had not seen my friend in over 4 months and it was time to catch up after a long semester. He had a Ruben sandwich and I got the chicken wrap. Together we shared an appetizer of Southwest egg rolls which ended up stealing the show for the tastiest dish of the evening. Perfectly crispy, Smokey Southwest flavor, and a chipotle aioli definitely roped us in on the egg rolls. In fact, my friend made sure he lassoed the rest of that spicy sauce to use on the fries with his dinner. I was left feeling a little slow on the draw! My friend is Chinese and the first words he used to describe this heard of flavors and textures started with comparing the crispy shell to being just like his dad used to make at his parents' former restaurant. I did not try the Ruben, but my friend offered up the safest reaction anyone could come up with for a plate that clearly did not deliver any kind of outstanding umami experience. "Well, it tastes like a Ruben," he said. I already knew what he was really thinking. This was kind of a letdown for two people who were looking for a friendly reunion while feasting on festive foods. I didn't know what to say. Glancing at his plate, the sandwich definitely looked like a Ruben! I eyeballed our waitress, and decided to ask her opinion on what to order. I figured because she worked there, she knew which menu items would stand out. I asked her to distinguish between two items: Prime rib sandwich or chicken wrap. She right away went for the wrap, but I think she just felt it was unique because it was partly stuffed with cheese curds. That doesn't necessarily make a sandwich to me. The wrap had too much sauce that spilled out with every bite. I also felt that, paired with the cheese curds, it was too rich. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the bar food. The French fries weren't crispy enough. I dislike too much of the brown outer layer of the potato cut with my French fries. In fact I like it completely removed. Otherwise the fries are much too soggy. I was looking forward to washing my sorrows away with a margarita, but even the mix they used tasted way too chemical over a natural lime flavor. I always order an extra shot of Grand Mariner into my drink because I encounter this a lot, but whatever mix they use was too overpowering and I even began to wonder if they put the extra shot in at all. The service was hospitable. You just look at the staff and you know they're good people. I almost feel bad because I've had very few good things to say about my experience. Unfortunately it's how I feel. I would only come back here if other options were limited. Otherwise, I'd say this is a cute neighborhood bar where those who live nearby can meet up and drink without having to drive. You'd hardly expect to find an eatery of this caliber amid nondescript factory buildings. But there is ample street parking on the block. The two rooms - high tables as you enter and low tables up a short flight of stairs - adorned with burnished woodwork are cozy and comfortable (this was previously a neighborhood watering hole). There is a tree-shaded patio, too. The convivial vibe, with oldies playing in the background, draws a loyal Baby Boomer crowd from the surrounding neighborhood. The chef/owner enjoys greeting guests. Her cooking is straightforward American, not Fulton Market trendy, but preparation and quality soar above typical pub or diner fare. The limited menu is augmented by some daily specials. Our group sampled several sandwiches and dinner entrees, and everything was delicious. The two soups that day - cream of chicken and cream of mushroom - were hearty and rich with flavor. Fish & chips featured moist slabs of cod enrobed in a crunchy (not greasy) batter. Accompanying this were homemade potato chips (not fries) and a pair of addictive corn fritters (this all-you-can-eat special was truly all we could eat). Whitefish, salmon, and chicken entrees, served with cheesy garlic mashed potatoes and veggies, also received high marks for freshness and flavor. The Angus burgers rank among the better ones we've had. Service was friendly and attentive. The full-service bar offers goodly wine and beer selections. From the limited dessert selection, we ordered Hummingbird cake (similar to carrot cake, with cream cheese frosting). One bite and we were humming, "Mmmmmm!" This is an Uber Eats based review: Being in a conference all week with one hour lunch break I decided to order from Highway House. I ordered three times so I had a variety of experiences. Over the course of the week I had the Shrimp with Grits, Corn Beef Sliders, Cod Tacos, Mac and Cheese, and Chicken Wrap. My least favorite was the Shrimp and Grits. Besides having Uber Eats spilling all the liquid out of the dish, the grits were not creamy, they were stiff. The whole dish traveled side ways but the grits never budged. I don't believe the 12 minutes of delivery time was the problem. The Shrimp were a nice size and quantity for the price but unfortunately they were overcooked. The Cod Tacos were by far my favorite. They were grilled cod with avocado, chipotle cream, lettuce, and tomatoes (I actually ordered them twice). I can only assume they would be even better fresh out of the kitchen. All three days we ordered the mac and cheese and all three days they were a different level of creaminess. The first day was soup and the last day was dry. The flavor was always good (I wish they would of sent salt and pepper in the to go bag) but the consistency was lacking. My wife ordered the chicken wrap and really liked it, she ordered the same thing each time and like the mac and cheese the level of dressing was from soup to dry. She always liked the flavor of the wrap but commented on the lack of consistency in the textures due to the dressing. Once, I ordered the Corn Beef Slider, it was $2.79 (or close to that price) so why not. It was an ok sandwich but it was cold. It reminded me of a graduation party buffet meat on a Hawaiian roll. I enjoyed it for what it was but I did not expect a cold slider. So with all the nit-picking why the 4 star rating? It was good. Stopped in with the fam tonight for dinner. The food is good and fairly priced. The wings we received were big juicy and had a great sauce. I had the chicken wrap, yum. I gave my fries and a side order of Mac n cheese (REAL CHEESE SAUCE) to the kiddo. It's a nice group of people with a great patio.
