The term "honest auto mechanic" is usually an oxymoron, as it's virtually impossible to find an "honest auto mechanic" these days. So-called, "ASE certified mechanics" at the STEAL-erships are more part replacers rather than, technicians. These "mechanics" just take their fancy tablets/scan tools, and after plugging into your car's ODB port, spout off some diagnostic codes with parts to replace leading to hundreds if not thousands of dollars in "repairs." Thanks to Yelp and always trusted Yelp friend, Hannah H, I was guided to Hillbrook Automotive several years ago and have been coming ever since. The owner, Mr. Choi, is well-known in the Korean community for being an experienced mechanic, and more importantly HONEST when it comes to your auto repair needs. While Hillbrook Automotive' s clientele may be predominately Korean, over the years I've been coming here, I've noticed folks from all races, creeds, and socio-economic classes take their vehicles to be serviced by Mr. Choi and his team of skilled mechanics. A sure sign that of a garage does honest and good work, is (1). How busy it is and (2). the type of cars they work on. At Hillbrooke, I've seen not only the more common Hondas, Toyotas, etc. being worked on, but it's not uncommon to find higher-end vehicles like Mercedes, BMWs, Lexus, Acuras, in the garage bays. If folks with these high dollar vehicles come to Mr. Choi for service, that speaks VOLUMES. I've even witnessed a few times where people who live in MD will have their cars TOWED here, because they know Mr. Choi will do good work and at a fair price. According to a 2023 report from credit agency Experian (https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/loans/auto-loans/average-monthly-car-payment), the average car payment is $729 for a new vehicle and $528 for a used car...ouch! It's no wonder that many Americans are opting to keep their cars for longer and keep driving it, until the figurative "wheels fall off." My front brakes needed replacing, and just out of curiosity since I had one of those STEAL-ership coupons in the mail, I took my car to get a quote. After nearly spitting out the "free" coffee, I said thanks, but no thanks, and wouldn't you know that Mr. Choi was able to install new rotors and brakes pad for $700 cheaper than big-box STEAL-ership?!?! Just a few things to keep in mind if you take your vehicle here for service: * The parking lot is small (since there is also a gas station here). So after pulling in and finding a parking spot, look for or ask for Mr. Choi. Provide him with a brief description of work you need, and he'll take your phone number to call you after diagnosing the issue. Note: It can be very chaotic in the morning during peak drop off time, and also don't be surprised if you have to wait some time to speak with Mr. Choi. He'll be easy to spot since all the staff wear name tags, and he'll be the older Korean gentleman that everyone will be congregating around. * You will likely need someone to drop off / pickup while your car is being serviced. There isn't a "waiting room," per se. There are a few chairs inside where the cashier is located, and a small uncomfortable bench. But you aren't really going to want to wait there for a few hours, if possible. * I HIGHLY recommend getting there before 9am. After a certain time (usually around 12pm noon), depending on the complexity of the repair, you will likely have to leave your car over night, or Mr. Choi will ask you to bring your car back the next day. Not that Hillbrook Automotive needs any more 5 star reviews, but I'm so thankful that Mr. Choi and team have extended the longevity of my car well north of 100K miles. I know at some point, I'll need to get a newer vehicle, but until then, I'll only bring my car here when it needs service. read more

This Korean owned automotive repair shop is more easily recognized as PURE Gas Station, along Little River Tnpk. Came here through a word-of-mouth recommendation of a friend who said this guy is known for his honesty. My 1999 Honda is showing signs of age, and when I took it to Honda - Tysons Corner, they gave me a laundry list of stuff I "should" get done to my car. One such item on the list was that I needed my engine mounts replaced since one was like 70% cracked. Of course it was an expensive repair. I took it to Curry Auto for a quick quote (not a diagnostic) but wasn't happy with the quote there either. Then I took it to Hillbrook, and asked how much it would cost to replace the engine mounts. He popped open the hood and took a quick look but didn't see anything initially...then raised my car up on the lift to take a look at the other mounts and found a small crack in one of them but said it wasn't that big of a deal. Undetered, I asked him if I can show him the tell-tale sounds that made me concerned. We rev'ed up the engine and stuff, but nothing, then we both took the car out on the road, but he couldn't produce the sound. We even swapped positions thinking I could replicate the sound...but couldn't. He could have done exactly what the dealers typically do by fluffing up the repair quote...but he didn't. I truly appreciate his honesty and integrity. It appears that most of his business is through automotive repair instead of selling gas, because his lot looked more like a used car dealer...there were tons of cars there...probably a good indication that he runs a good operation. Mr. Choi runs an old-fashioned repair shop with people who know what they are doing and Mr. Choi delivers great customer service. I have had serpentine belts, a rearview mirror, and tires replaced, all for much less than I would have paid at a large garage or the dealership. He has installed parts on my car for free. When changing my tires, they hand rubbed out rough spots on the rim. I buy all my gas there because it is always among the cheapest gas prices {three are 2 stations nearby that might be $.01 to $.03 a gallon cheaper but I'd rather remain loyal to Mr. Choi. Anyone who knows me know that I don't do cars. When my car stopped in the middle of the road during rush hour (worst nightmare T___T), I totally freaked out and burst into tears. I called my dad (who lives in Chicago, so he really couldn't do much :x) and the hubs (who was at work, but left so that he could come keep me 'company' :P (as I was so distressed!)). Both told me to call Mr. Choi, the owner of Hillbrook, who I've been going to ever since I'd moved here (I know, I don't think clearly when I spaz out!). He hooked me up with a friendly ahjuhshee to tow my car, who gave me a ride to the shop. Mr. Choi checked my car meticulously and was able to fix all the issues. He even gave me updates on what was wrong with it, what he planned on doing, and quoted me a very reasonable price. He may take a minimum of a day or up to a few days to fix (depending on the work and/if any parts needed to be ordered), but you always leave with a fixed-up car. Right off of Little River Turnpike, the lot of this place is always jam-packed with other cars that needs some TLC, which just shows you how much his customers trust him! My car, in general, gives me a lot of grief, but with Mr. Choi's magic hands, it has been surviving! When my dad was in town to visit and I had to get my tires replaced (and, yes, of course we went to Mr. Choi!), my pops thanked him for always taking care of me. My honda civic '91 needed maintenance work. Its timing belt needed to be changed and front wheel bearing was pretty worn out. I called about 7 places, all of which I found on yelp in the Northern Virginia area. Hillbrook was the only shop that offered low price along with dealer parts. I went through a long process and learned a lot, so please read on. The places I got quote from include Zaf Auto, AA Auto, Curry's Auto, Joyce Motor... The quotes they gave me were pretty much all near $700-800 (parts + labor) for changing out the timing belt and $300-400 for changing out the front wheel bearing. Being a responsible consumer, of course I did some research online and found that the stupid front wheel bearing only costs $70, while the timing belt kit was maybe $200. So I was pretty pissed by the overprice. Oh yes, they always claimed the same thing... It's the labor!! Don't blame them, possible they pay mechanics more than Hillbrook does. It's all relative. But if YOU want low price, then you have the choice of choosing... So in the end, I spoke with Choi from Hillbrook Automotive Inc to get a quote. He gave me a quote of $500 for timing belt and $150 for front wheel bearing. All dealer parts. That's almost $500 of savings compared to the previous quotes!! Of course I couldn't resist, so I went to Hillbrook for the work. (side note, Auto Stop gave me a quote of $500 for timing belt replacement using after-market parts, and $289 for front wheel bearing) At Hillbrook, I stood next to the mechanics and watched the whole process. I'm an engineer myself, they didn't mind my curiosity and showed me how the stuff worked. Keep in mind, they are koreans, so not the best english speakers in the world. And the shop doesn't look super fancy, it's a gas station, inspection, and auto repair back-to-back. I don't speak Korean, but we communicated just fine. Choi's english is pretty good actually. Anyway, I wasn't paying someone to speak english nor for a fancy auto shop. Those guys were real friendly and the job got done in a few hours (those jobs are by nature time-consuming). Later on as we got closer to the Hillbrook Automotive it's self he recognized it and said he just brought a car there the day before (this is when I knew I was in the right spot). I always had my Maxima serviced in Pennsylvania when I come back there to visit my parents. This time, it was making too much noise, and I suspected it to be the rear wheel-bearing. I couldn't come to PA for the next few weekends, so I decided to look around for a reliable mechanic near Annandale where I live. After reading many reviews on many mechanics, I decided to settle on Mr. Choi, despite a two-star review by Joon L. It was only one bad experience among many good experiences right? WRONG ... I stopped by on a Tuesday to have my car looked at. The shop was so busy, that I waited half an hour to even talk to the guy. I told him what I thought was wrong with the car, he gave me a questioning look and asked how would I know if there was something wrong with the rear wheel-bearing, like I had no idea what I was talking about. I guess he gave me the benefit of the doubt and went ahead and quote me about $350ish for the job. I asked if he would be able to do it by the end of the day. He said no, and told me to bring it back Thursday. I brought the car back first thing Thursday when he opened and left it there. He called around 1 p.m. and told me that he would need to replace one right front wheel-bearing and one right rear wheel-bearing. I didn't tell him that I just had both of my front wheel-bearing replaced ... I trusted the guy so I gave my permission to do both. The job costed me $530. Came back at the end of the day to pick up my car. Everything was good until I had to brake at a red light. It appeared like the brake didn't take and there was a winding sound whenever I tried to get the car to decelerate to 0 mph. The next day I drove the car to my workplace which is in MD. Hopped onto I-495 then I-270 ... And discovered that whenever I went above 45 mph, the brake and the ABS lights would come on. Took the car back to him. Told him the problems and that these problems didn't appear before I took the car to him. He said he'd look at it. Came by at the end of the day. He said he took out the wheel-bearings again and put back everything again by HIMSELF (made me wonder did he have some inexperienced guy doing this stuff before?!) and he couldn't figure out the problem. Asked me to leave the car with him so he could look into it. I couldn't leave the car with him since I needed to go to work the next day. So we settled on the car coming on a Friday when I can work from home. Dropped off the car Friday's morning. Came to pick it up at the end of the day and guess what, the same story ... that he took everything out and put everything back in and he couldn't figure out what the problem was. So basically I paid $530 for a small problem ... received a bigger problem in return, AND had to come back to his place twice and the problem still wasn't fixed. The thing was what made me even more angry was I don't think he even looked at it the last time around (Friday). If he couldn't do it, just tell me so that I wouldn't have to waste my time bringing the car to him as well as ask for permission to work from home! I like to take my car for repairs at this Pure Gas Station because Mr. Choi is as honest as it gets when it comes to trusting a mechanic. I've been going to this place for the past few years and I like it. One time, my 97 Lincoln continental had to be towed because it wouldn't start all of the sudden. He had it for few days and fixed it for a low $120 for parts and labor. He's an honest man and does good work. I also noticed that his lot became much cleaner recently. The place got really cleaned up and looking much better. I do recommend this place for any common mechanical problems. Simple fixes are done fast. However, I recommend staying in touch with him from now and than for any job that's more complicated since the overwhelming volume of cars can be troublesome when it comes to getting your priority repairs. read more

Mr. Choi is a liar and a thief. I cracked my oil pan and took it to this shop by word of mouth from a family friend. I also needed a inspection but had to wait 30 minutes because he was not there and did not allow any other mechanics to do the work. I thought that was a bit confusing. He almost ripped my mother off 900$ for completely fixing nothing. I questioned Mr. Choi on the price but he started getting an attitude. I asked him for an invoice, which took yelling at him to get it. I thought this was normal procedure for a mechanic to provide an invoice. I did not trust him from the start to being with. Next this guy would not haggle a bit about the price, he was extremely rude and obnoxious. I was getting angry, and then he said 900$ or nothing. I was so pissed so I just left. Then I felt bad so I was gonna go back and pay him the price but to my amazement I checked under my car and the oil pan was not changed! It was the same exact oil pan with cracks throughout. All he did was put on something like JB weld, which is a temporary fix for cracks! It's like a putty mold. I could not believe this! He was about to rip me off 900$ for something I could have bought for 2.50 from pepboys and done myself in a couple minutes. What a ripoff!!! I feel sorry for all the other immigrant families that go to get work done by him. Do not trust him, he rips off innocent people that don't know much about cars. He is a leech. After reading the other reviews here, I went to Hillbrook because my car was running hot. They were really busy, and when they finally saw my car, they diagnosed the problem quickly. Mr. Choi told me he could get the part the next day (a Saturday), and he could have it ready the same day. He also quoted a price. I said okay and left the car. The next day, I called to check in around 2, and Mr. Choi said he forgot to pick up the part! He was really, really apologetic and put me on hold and called the part people. Then, he said it would still be ready that day. Three hours later, he called to say it was ready. I would and have recommended him to everybody. Every time I'd ask how much it cost for mount and balance on 4 tires and the owner always gives me different price all the times. Last time I'd took one of my other car and he said $17 for mount/balance but when I came to pick up the car he charged me $20 cause he said it wasn't easy, so there for had to charge $3 more. I understand some tires not easy to install but he could of told me this earlier or should have called me before the install.. i don't care about $3 more but it's not right when they gives you total price and charge you something else later.. my word advice is that when every time you take your car here for any service have them write it in writing how much your total cost gonna be so that you won't end up paying something way different when you come to pick up.. read more

It's very difficult to find a qualified honest mechanic. Since moving from California in 2001, Mr. Choi's station is the only place that I go to for all auto needs. Price is very reasonable....half of what dealer charges when I compared few times. And he would never tell you that you need some other unnecessary repairs....and many mechanics do. Choi had been my preferred mechanic for years. I absolutely have loved him for all the reasons listed below -- great mechanic, reasonable prices, honest, Christian, etc. Recently I took my car in for an inspection, expecting no surprises as my car was in good condition, that he would not flag anything that didn't need to be flagged....only to find out he no longer did inspections? Why not? I was told that too many people tried to get Mr. Choi to pass them when they shouldn't have been passed and rather than be dishonest, he simply stopped doing them. Granted, I found this explanation easy to believe as I have seen the whiny, horrid customers go in demanding and attempting to intimidate Choi into lowering already reasonable prices to try to get something for nothing, wacky customers always pressing their luck, trying to exploit Mr. Choi's good nature, honesty, etc. I wondered how he put up with it. Turns out he decided not to any more. In the past, his business was always super busy as Choi was flooded with inspection requests, leaving him overwhelmed. During my last visit, the crowds were gone. No more inspections. I panicked. I didn't know any other mechanics in the area -- and was afraid of being ripped off but I asked -- if you don't do inspections, who does? Choi's mechanics recommended a shop down the street, said they refer business to each other -- it was a shop run by Arabs -- a Mobil or Shell, if I remember correctly. Of course, when I go down there, the mechanic comes back with a whole laundry list of stuff he claims I need, including, of course, wiper blades. The pass sticker was ripped off my window and I l was left with a rejection -- and blackmail -- do the repairs there or face getting fined and your car impounded if you drive away illegally with failed inspection. I challenged what they were doing and was called "aggressive" and a few other choice names. The stuff they flagged consisted of bogus and manufactured issues. I was now looking at a hefty repair bill. I went down the street for a second opinion, thus beginning a comedy of errors...The next mechanic saw the fail sticker and wanted to add even more bogus things onto the existing bogus things only to refer me next door to another mechanic who "passes everyone." That mechanics added even more bogus things onto the previous guy's assessment, The mechanics had a racket in the area... Disgusted and alarmed, I returned to Choi's recommended partner and agreed to do the fix, only now he was saying that since I had left, he would need to keep the car for a few days to punish me for not letting him do it the first time. Don't you love it when mechanics play games like this? I took my car to Auto Advance -- bought miscellaneous things I had been flagged for -- like wiper blades -- and went to Choi for labor and was shocked to receive a quote that nearly tripled what was quoted by the Arabs for parts AND labor. Granted, Choi looked uncomfortable with the quote, almost embarrassed to give it. I don't know if he offered this quote in solidarity with the other mechanic so I would have to return to get it done there, decided to triple the fee, thinking I wouldn't know. I actually rounded the number I had been originally quoted up -- so Choi agreed to repair the car more than what the other mechanic had quoted. For the first time Choi took my phone number which I gave him with the understanding it would be used to call me when the car was ready. I was never called. instead the number was entered into a database, which upset me as this was a private number and now it's public. I am going to have to change it. The work was done. I paid Choi and went back to his recommended mechanic, waited another hour to get the car re-inspected for $1 and then was on my way-- a whole day gone, over manufactured repairs. i made a decision after this debacle that however much of a blessing Choi had been, that ship has sailed. I would not be going back. Based upon how empty his business was, it appears others have come to the same conclusion. Something has changed. The triple billing attempt floored me. I used to go to Choi as his rates would always match online recommended prices. After a while I no longer checked as I knew his quote was good. Now he is conducting himself like the typical mechanic. Maybe he got caught underpaying mechanics, maybe he got fined for doing something he shouldn't have been doing, maybe he was passing cars that shouldn't have been passed, maybe his business is hurting for other reasons....the whole thing, the Arab mechanics he recommended and the shenanigans they pulled, and then what he and others did afterward, none of it sat well with me. I will be looking for an honest mechanic closer to home and be reading reviews carefully. I have gone to Choi's for years. Sadly, I am now looking elsewhere. read more

After I bought a lemon from Craigslist my car broke down, spent $300 to have it towed after it broke down outside of kings dominion to Landmark Sunoco. They told me my car is a piece of sh$&! It's a 93 300zx. As I was about to junk it my best friend told me about Mr. Choi who has been his mechanic for 20yrs. I have never met the most kindest, honest mechanic. don't be fooled, just a crook. choi charged me $150 for an ac recharge, i thought that was way too much so i did some research. i found out i could've bought the entire do it yourself kit for $75! a day later my ac charge had all leaked out so i gave choi a call to make an appointment. he then told me to come in "WHENEVER." so i went in later just to be sent back home. the commute from burke to annandale is not fun in traffic WITH NO AC. after getting my car there for the third time someone finally looked at it. my ac compressor whatever was broken and had to be replaced. choi said the part would cost 450 used and 800 new.. once again i thought that was way too expensive and raised suspicion. i got home and made some calls to get some estimates. they didn't even come close to that amount. 100-150 used and 300-450 new. customer service sucks too, i had to write my own receipt? TWICE???? ARE YOU SERIOUS?! look i never write reviews.. i think this is my first review. the frustration this place has caused me made me want to write this. if you're just getting gas or an oil change, maybe. if anything bigger, go somewhere else. read more

For the past 9 years, I could not survive without Him. my two old cars have been taken care by Dr. choi. He knows what needs to be fixed urgently although there are other things to be fixed. Mr. Choi, the owner of Hillbrook Automotive is an extremely trust worthy person and an outstanding mechanic. I have taken my cars to him for many years now. He did a great job at a reasonable price on every problem I took to him. The greatest thing about him is he doesn't charge you anything if he determines there is no problem. read more
