I was told to leave my merchandise at the front register. I wasn't allowed to walk around and shop with The merchandise. I was profiled like I was going to steal the item. I wasn't done shopping so I spent my $350 at B&C ! Note to Hills flat management, figure out a way to treat your customers like human beings not crooks. I will never shop there again. I would rather go to A-Z or B&C . Your store has a small town mentality sheltered from any ethnicity. read more

Prices are high. I hate to say it but the staff are both unhelpful and unknowledgeable. 90% of the time they have given us incorrect info and we've made a purchase that we either have to return or just not use. Not to mention no one seems to be available to help customers. I hate to give a negative review to a local business, but I have too. We've been there several times with the same result. Hills Flat is by far the most expensive hardware store I have ever visited. The people who work at Hills Flat are usually rude. The man who "helped" me yesterday informed me that I couldn't buy the lightbulb I was looking for as they are illegal in California... Hmmm... Compact fluorescents that give off 75W? Strangely enough despite their illegal status I was still able to purchase them. He just had to make a trip to the back to refill the shelf. Then I get to the front and they don't even take AMEX anymore. I'm just marking them off my list completely. There are so many great hardware stores around town. We frequent A-Z Supply on Ridge Rd. And the Penn Valley True Value and get everything we need for a fraction of what we would pay at Hills Flat. read more

Last week we went to Hills Flat to get a leaf blower & weed eater. We found one that was cordless & had a rechargeable battery. The price was really good ($110) and Jennifer was very helpful. We have never had a battery operated weed eater so we asked Jennifer about the return policy. Our concern was that it may not be powerful enough or that the battery wouldn't last. Jennifer told us that it had a 30 day return policy. We just had to make sure to keep all packaging, boxes, & our receipt. Several days after our purchase my husband attempted to do some yard work using the new tools. Unfortunately, the equipment just wasn't powerful enough. We packed it back into the box & I took it back today. When I walked into the store today to return it, I was directed to take my return back to the lumber desk. When I got to the lumber desk I was told that they don't process returns there, I needed to go to the rentals desk. So, I headed over to the rental desk. An employee named Jake L was who was processing my return. He asked me if there was anything wrong with it. I told him that there wasn't anything wrong with it, it just wasn't powerful enough. He then tells me that his problem with returning it is that we used it & there is nothing wrong. I told him that we had been told by Jennifer that if it wasn't powerful enough we could return it. Furthermore, how could I find out that it wasn't powerful enough without using it!?! In the end, he ended up refunding me. I was just really frustrated by his attitude & logic. Customer service is not Jake's strong suit. read more

I was recommended by a friend to check out Hills Flat to buy a new washer and dryer. I was told to see Tim in the appliance area and he would help me. My friend had told me how nice Tim was. That's definitely not my experience with him. I told him what I was looking for( a whirlpool, LG or Samsung ). You can have any make you would like to buy as long as it is a General Electric! I asked him to show me one of his GE's that was comparable to the other manufacturers I liked. He showed me a GE model that he said was pretty much the same. The price was $600 higher for the pair than what the major stores were selling. I asked him if there were any discounts for disabled veterans and he snapped back at me with " Certainly not! People are lucky if they can even buy one right now due to manufacturing and shipping problems. When the few appliances that we have in stock are gone you would be lucky to get a new one for 9 months." I wrote down the model numbers that he was offering me to check their reviews online before buying them from Tim. I saw Hills Flat's latest online prices on their webpage. Every single washer and dryer were discounted the same. Exactly $1.03 off the retail price! Who does that? Then I researched the models Tim had offered me at full retail and to my surprise, that washer and dryer were already discontinued and not being made anymore. $600 more for 'old' discontinued models? Lucky to even get one? Yes. I was lucky that I didn't buy them from him. Do you know how far I had to drive to find one of those elusive appliances? No more that 200 yards from Hills Flat front door! I went into our local Sears Hometown Store and saw 20 or 30 different models and makes sitting on their floor. They had Whirlpool, LG and Samsung. I ended up buying the latest versions of their Kenmore brand( Whirlpool ) for the same price as Hills Flat discontinued models. I bought them on Friday afternoon and they were professionally installed in my Lake Wildwood home( terribly steep and narrow driveway ) on Tuesday morning. Doesn't sound like Tim was telling the true story. Next time you are searching for major appliances locally, I suggest trying Sears Hometown instead! read more

This store saved my life. I had a water pipe break and couldn't attend to it until 3pm. It took me until 6 to find where the pipe broke and dig out the hole. I walked into Hills Flat at 6:55, they close at 7:00. I knew (kind of) what i needed. The gentlemen helping me was very friendly, and knowledgable about what i needed to fix the pipe. He gave me tips on what to do and asked if I needed extra help to call in the AM. This store MAY be over priced but ill pay extra for quality, friendly service any day! read more

By far the worst customer tool counter service I have ever endured. The young kid at the counter told me I had to special order the 10" chain for the pole saw I purchased in April which Hills Flat Lumber had no record of the purchase. Save your money and go to Penn Valley True Value. Store manager walked over and gave me the correct chain with no BS and spent an additional $100 for the great customer service. We were looking for a dishwasher and to have it delivered and installed, and we wanted to shop local, in addition to the dishwasher, they were charging an additional $200 for delivery and installation. We can go to Home Depot in Auburn and it will be $100 cheaper. Sorry hills flat. read more

The Staff at the front of the store are always very kind and very helpful. This review is for windows and doors. I Special Ordered a window and when I went to go pick it up a few months later they had sold it to someone else. So they said I had to reorder it again... eventually I needed to return the window (i hadn't actually picked it up, it was still at the store but I had paid for it already) they would not budge on returning it... Terrible Customer Service in this area. read more

Hills flat has been great to work with, The kids working in the lumber yard are terrific. They helped my brother and I load some heavy lumber to fix our deck and they made sure it was all tied down properly and everything. The prices are a little higher than home depot but when you add the fuel cost in it's a draw and we need to keep our local businesses going. read more

Recently purchased a house in Penn Valley. Been to both B & C and Penn Valley True Value, and both pale in comparison. Both my wife and I had lots of questions, which were professionally answered, and we were able to get virtually everything we needed for the new house at fair prices with superior service. I only found one or two items that were priced higher than I could get at Home Depot, but overall, we actually paid LESS at Hills Flat than we would have at the Depot, including installed appliances! And if you haven't tried their Deli, the people working there are super friendly and the food is tasty at reasonable prices. read more

This bright and modern establishment has wonderful displays and a very good garden department. Unfortunately it has a jerk salesman in the appliance dept. He said ridiculous false statements to try to impress me with his knowledge. He is then revealed as a really dumb jerk, an ignorant mansplainer! I was going to buy a dishwasher but whoever I spoke with on the phone couldn't be bothered to measure the dimensions of the box to see if it would fit in my SUV. So I went elsewhere, ended up buying $3800 of appliances from nice people who also offered free delivery. They need to get rid of this guy, and have free delivery in order to compete. read more

Doing business with Hills Flat Lumber and Tim Lloyd has been a refreshing experience. I purchased a new washing machine but there was a glitch in the installation due to a manufacturer's redesign of the new model. So about everyday I need some kind of household tool or material. I have never gone in there and not found what I need.

The absolutely hate this store. 100 degree weather trying to tie down 5 pieces of sheet rock and 8 2x4's. Not one employee asked if I needed help. Amazing! After 45min. Let's hope it doesn't fly off on the freeway. Just sit on your little stool to double check my receipt. read more

The worst customer service! If you're in grass valley I would recommend B & C Ace Home & Garden Center. They treat you like family! Hills Flat on the other hand, most workers won't even look at you when you come in or pass by them, let alone offer any kind of help. I went in to get keys made, the two ladies working the front counter didn't acknowledge us for about 10 minutes, when they finally did, they rung over their head set for the key maker to come to the key counter. She rung once & said they'd be up in a few minutes. Another 10 minutes go by, nobody comes & the lady continued to act like we didn't exist. We then went up to the other lady at the counter who rung, once again & told us the person would be up shortly. Another 10 minutes goes by, & my boyfriend decided to just go look for the person who does the keys. He asked a man at the paint counter who then told him the key guy was off 20 minutes ago. That would've been nice to know 30 minutes before when we got there. When we left the ladies at the front, once again didn't even acknowledge us. The lumber yard is awesome there, customer service is on point. Inside the store however, is a completely different vibe. I will never give my time or money to this place again! read more

Seems when one calls an hour ahead for rental information, such as : Price, availability, type of equipment, readiness etc,. When showing up all the above should be ready? But no.. What I received was an individual put out cause I inquired once again about the readiness of rental and my info that was given to aquire rental. People who have a decent job , should not treat customers as if they sit in some Ivory Tower??? If you go to the Colfax rental Dept. as I did 06/01/14 .You may get the feeling they own you ? I've been a long-term customer since I moved here 35 years ago. I've always had good, friendly service and the new store layout is very user-friendly. They are a bit 'pricey' as other reviewers have noted, but for a place to get some odds and ends in a hurry, I always go there. If I needed a large quantity of lumber or building materials, I'd hit one of the 'Big Box' stores, hands down, but until then, I'll pay the extra price because the store is only about 10 minutes away if I need a plumbing or electrical part in a hurry. read more

The customer service is lacking at this place, or it's the new generation. The kid in the lumber that works in morning has a very bad attitude and a foul mouth. When I asked for some lumber to be cut. He snapped with a attitude like it was inconvenient for him, also mumbling f#%* this I have to cut, f$&@ that why don't you just cut it. When I asked him to speak up, he became quiet, he cut them half inch off and not even straight. Also there is a manager who believes he owns the franchise. He actually became angry with me because the employee did not put the cuts on yellow recept for me to pay for. I did not ask for any discounts I asked for wood to be cut. Yes I know about the service charge for cuts, no I didn't ask him to fix me up. The worker said he was trying to save me money. The manager stated because I did not pay and its a lot of cuts, I am taking to much time for other customers. So I guess the service charge goes to the guy behind me, not the store? My wife wanted me to go the other day to store pick up supplies for yard. I did not go because I feel like I'm a burden to ask for wood. So I will just look for somewhere else to do business. This was not the only time I feel disrespected at grass valley lumber. I just feel tired of the hardship of over priced Chinese products and the Eminem attitudes, so I wrote this to inform other customers. Supposedly they will give extra help for disabled placards, well I have a DV plate for many injuries. When I asked for help, they look at me like I have a d&@k for a unicorn on my head. read more

I really enjoy going to Hills Flat lumber. I always get greeted with a smile, a lot of people know my name .if I need help it's not hard to find they will actually lead me through a shopping list if I needed to. If I have a problem with the product they have always taken it back and helped me with warranty issues. read more

The employees at Hills Flat Lumber are extremely helpful, I needed advice for a deck paint/stain and when I called in they put me through to the paint department and I actually spoke with a real "painter". When I arrived they knew who I was and were efficient and cheerful. His advice gave me exactly what I wanted/needed for my deck and it was on sale! I am no "home improvement" expert and I hate wasting my "DIY home improvement" time trying/failing/ and then returning products that are wrong for my projects. I will continue shopping at Hills Flat for their expertise and good products. read more

when i requested lumber prices on search i wanted a number as in a price as in how much will the lumber i request cost rather you sell it by the foot or the board. i am well aware of who has prices, like there is a lumber yard that doesn't have prices. i'm 51 yrs old not 3 . even i have a price and its for my time. this time its on me. so what do you say next time how about given me a price on ur lumber it well make for a much more pleasent day when common sence comes in to play. read more
