I use to bounce around from salon to salon until I discovered HIP 5 years ago. I always leave feeling more beautiful and happy!

Have been coming here for a while now. Drove an hr in traffic in rain to come to an appointment they booked with someone who left before I got there, didn't call to let me know and all they offered me was another hr wait with more expensive stylist. I'd give you 0 stars if I could. Absolutely terrible way to treat repeat customers. Never coming back. Don't waste your time on a place with such shitty cust service read more

Jill is FANTASTIC. I normally keep my hair long, and it was at its longest, past the bra line. I was itching for something different, and she delivered. She probably cut 8 inches off. The hair just sweeps my shoulders and is styled just like I pictured in my head. Also, the prices are super reasonable. I've paid double their rate for cuts that left me disappointed. I absolutely loved my experience at Hip Salon yesterday. Julia did my Baylage and I am so pleased with how it turned out! I never had this type of hair style before and she was an expert at explaining it and doing it...not to mention she was super easy to talk to and had a great personality!! The gentleman who washed my hair was fabulous as well. No water made its way into my ears which seems to always happen to me at past salons. Haha Danielle cut my hair and styled it. She was fantastic also!! Such a talented staff. She explained all the products she was using and made sure I loved my cut. ****Bring cash for tipping as you can't tip on your card. I drove to an ATM and came back to tip. No way was I not tipping those fabulous folks! :D**** Thank you to everyone at the salon. I love my new look and had a great time at your salon. Wow - so I had 2 people from the salon respond to this post (one in a private comment) basically saying it wasn't their fault. Huh. I even responded to Debra (below) and said I was glad that she was monitoring the comments and that I thought her stylists were great and wishing her good luck. She repays that by telling her stylist, who in turn writes me a message saying it wasn't his fault. Whatever. This is totally childish. You are a business and need to be responsible for your actions, and the internet is a public place where people post their experiences, and if they happen to be not so great, you can't try to guilt someone into removing their comment. Notice that I didn't mention any names here. I'm lowering my rating to a 1. I was a good customer, and if they were a smart business they'd try and win me back, not complain that I posted a factual report of my experience online. read more

I got my haircut a few times at this place from Sal. I think he does a good job. I am a guy though I don't think I should have to pay 65$ + tip. I don't have that much to cut. I think guy haircuts should be 45$. When I tell friends how much I pay for hair cuts they say I am nuts. I haven't been to HIP in a while because I think they charge too much for guys haircuts. Again, they washed my hair and cut it. 65$+ tip for males. That seems too high. I also want to say that my daughter goes to HIP along with her mother for haircuts and they always look fantastic. The quality of the hair artists is good. UPDATE from comment.. I would have to say my average time getting cut and shampoo is 35 minutes. When all I require is a trim over a haircut I cannot justify paying 75-80 after tip. I have seen more than a few haircut places charges different for men than woman. It is not discrimination when most women have long hair that requires more time and layering. Maybe I phrased my idea incorrectly. I think haircuts should be 65$, and trims should be 45$. I am not asking to change your prices, but I am saying that I will get my hair trimmed somewhere that does charge around 40$ instead. read more

This was my first visit to this particular salon, but not my first encounter with Danielle. Danielle has been cutting my boyfriends hair since she was at Asha Aveda Salon and because she's one of the best, naturally, he followed her because he will not let anyone else near his hair. I knew Danielle would do an awesome job on me and I was not disappointed. My first impression with the salon itself was great! I love that they send you reminder texts about your appointment, alleviating any misunderstanding about appt times. I have no idea what the negative reviews are about regarding the front desk staff, but they were amazing, friendly, very professional and accommodating. There were two ladies working the front desk and between them, they offered to take coats and offered beverages. My shampoo tech Jill rocked! I frequent blow-dry bars and on occasion, I come across someone that is intimidated by my hair...it's the same damn hair people, just on different skin tones! I told Jill that I wanted hot water and she honored that and continuously asked me if it was too hot and if I was ok; what a sweetie. Also, I loved that she got in there and massaged my scalp...she wasn't scared! She was so good, I damn near fell asleep! Danielle gave me an awesome blow out followed by beach waves and I was on my way after only 1hour and 20 minutes! Bomb! Great service, great atmosphere, good energy and THANK YOU a million times over for the kids rule! If I wanted to be surrounded by screaming kids, I would go to the damn mall! read more

Living in the NW suburbs it's hard to find anyone decent to do your hair. I have been going to Jimmy and Nick at HIP salon for years and years, so trying to find a replacement just wasn't happening... At whits end with my hair, I decided to make an appt with Jimmy. I gave Nick the heads-up that I was coming in, and whatever the reason was, they got my appt correct. Jimmy brought my hair back from it's non-layered funk (after going to a new place). He's got a great personality, and he's just one of those people you cannot be mad at. He was very apologetic, even though the mistake was not his... but I definitely appreciate it. As for the mgmt, they did comp my cut, which I'm grateful for. However, I was never worried about paying for the services... anyone who knows me could tell you that I will spend a full paycheck on great hair! I simply wanted the owners to contact me and apologize. It's kinda like having a boyfriend send you flowers after being a jerk... but never saying "I'm sorry" Thanks to Nick, the salon keeps a client. The front desk "manager," Tierney, was nicer than usual and I got a complimentary cut. I guess that's better than the free conditioning treatment Tierney offered me when it first happened. read more

I'm not one to stray far from a tested favorite (I've been seeing a stylist at Mario Tricoci Bloomingdale for more than 6 years), but when I was asked my a good girlfriend to stand in her wedding and invited to get my hair done with the bridesmaids, I couldn't refuse. The staff at HIP was very friendly, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results of my updo as well as the other 3 ladies. We all requested very different styles, from simple and elegant to a bit wild, and each was executed quickly and cleanly. At the end of the night, we were still looking great. The other ladies also had their makeup done by someone who looked very young, which made me nervous. However, she was very professional and thorough. My hair was a complete disaster. It was an ugly shade of blonde...too light for my skin tone...my hair looked thin and damaged. I had an appointment with Tyler and he fixed the color! I have been going to HIP Salon for over 2 years and I have been quite pleased. Julia is my colorist and Jenn is my stylist. Great ladies and excellent at thier craft. I took a leap of faith and moved from Salon Buzz in the city since it became an all day affair to get my hair done due to travel time. I found this salon on accident. Gleaming like a vision from heaven in their window. Karestase Products!!! I figured if they carry Karestase, they must be a good salon. Prior to finding this gem a few miles from my home, I would drive to the city to buy my products. Yes, Karestase is pricey and I've read other reviews that the salon itself is pricey. I will disagree with these posts and say if you want a cheap hair cut go to Bo Ricks... Perhaps I'm missing something but $60ish is average for a good cut and I have paid nearly $100 at other salons in the past. Bottom line: You get what you pay for. I can walk out of there with a full highlight, all over color and cut for $180 plus tip. In the city I paid $250+ The salon itself is fun and well... "HIP" with their decor. In addtion to Karestase they also carry a full like of Bumble & Bumble products as well as higher end brushes and combs. Other products and services inlcude hair extensions, (which they will cut and color for you at no charge) eyelash extensions ,($75 to $350) and full makeup. The staff is welcoming and I am always offered tea or coffee. I haven't had the issues with being ignored by the ladies workng the desk. Sure, they chat but I have never personally been offended. They seem like they're having fun and enjoying thier job and that's a bonus in my book. I can surprisingly get an appointment within a few days of calling. read more

I moved to the city, two years ago, and I continue to drive out to Schaumburg for HIP Salon, for my services. I have been going to HIP since Christine Chun moved to the salon. I can't imagine going anywhere else. Christine's skills are like no other. A friend of mine, who is a stylist, recommended that I never leave Christine because her work is amazing. I have had my hair cut by Jennifer and Esteban. I was very happy with both stylists and the cut. I was married in November and Jennifer did my hair and Zoe did my makeup, for the wedding. Went in for a last minute hair color and cut. Made appt with Sandy for color and Salvatore for hair cut. Both did a fabulous job. And they were both very nice and welcoming. This is my 4th time here at HIP and they always do amazing. Love my hair cut. Went from very long, to a shoulder length bob. Looks so rockin! Thank you Sandy for great color (Tyler thanks for pulling up my color info to ensure it was the warm black I love), and Salvatore I love love love the cut! I have been a HIP customer for 2 years now. I will admit for my first year and half experience there, the front desk staff was awful. I would hear them talking about how awful other customers are to how their date went the night before. That being said, it has gotten much better with the front desk staff they have now. I don't think its perfect but it is a much more positive atmosphere now than before. A few months ago, I waited 20mins for my colorist because she wasn't paged but the girl at the front desk was very apologetic. I am someone that went to beauty school and realized that it wasn't for me after I finished. That being said, I am extremely picky about my hair. For coloring I have only gone to Jesse because she is amazing and precise. Her foils are the best, she gets so close to the roots.(I know for a fact that some colorists, not at hip salon, won't get as close because they want you to come in sooner). She listens to what you want and she is very personable. What's great is that she can carry on a conversation and be quick! I have been a loyal HIP customer because of Jesse. As far as cutting I have had my hair cut by Michelle, Norma, Jennifer and Yuri. They all did a great job and my hair looked nice each time but Yuri really gave me the cut that fit my personality and what I wanted. She was also very sweet. I think all their stylist are very well trained considering they are a bumble and bumble salon. They also use Kerastase. If you know hair like I do, Kerstase and bumble and bumble are the best products out there. The salon really is very city like in the suburbs. It is also clean and maintained. I do wish they offered more spa like surfaces like massage, facials, and pedicures. read more

I was referred to Hip Salon by a coworker who has great hair color/ cut. I actually had to make an appointment last minute to have lots of services done. Had to break it up into three appointments. First I did my color and trim, then a wedding trial, then a wedding updo. My first appointment color went well and I had my hair colored to match some clip in extensions that I was planning to use for my wedding. The girl who did my color. Her name is Jeanine. My hair color was shiny and the blonde highlights were perfectly tinted, awesome! I then had a haircut with Jill, she did a great job and was super pleasant to talk to you. For my wedding trial and wedding updo Danielle did my style, my hair was absolutely beautiful, she was able to cut the extensions and cut them to suit my wedding hairstyle. . She was such a pleasure to talk to everyone at the salon was friendly and amazing. My coworker recommended me initially to Tyler. I was able to chat with Tyler and he was so pleasant and cool to talk to, I would feel comfortable probably seen any of these people again but definitely recommend all of those who I had seen myself to cover anyone's hair, trim their hair or updos. I was referred here by my girlfriend who has been getting her hair cut here for years. I was seen by Salvatore who was great! Our first meeting he cleaned up my sides and told me to grow my hair out a little so he could work with it. A month later I came back in and WOW. Seriously the best haircut I have ever gotten. He asked me how I generally liked my hair, I told him and then he went to work. Truly a master at his trade. I came from an over priced chain salon to here and let me tell you; they don't even come close to comparing. The second I walked in I felt welcomed and Tyler my colorist instead of doing what I had booked advised me differently. Not only do I appreciate that but love that even towards the bearing of closing he still cared enough to tell me I needed a different color service. Not being used to a split concept salon I was very apprehensive to have someone else wash my hair, but Yvette is wonderful and so sweet. I have been looking for a colorist and stylist for a while now because the salon I used to go to just didn't really do a good job anymore so I looked here on yelp and read a bunch of reviews. The reviews for hip were close to the best and specifically the ones for nick and jimmy. Bianca's review was great and I liked her color and hairstyle so I booked an appointment with the two of them. They did an awesome job. Nick really took the time to listen to me and my color is great. I told him to do whatever he thought and he hit the nail on the head. Jimmy also did a great job really taking his time to make sure it turned out just right instead of just rushing through trying to get it done. I will defiantly be going back to them in the future!!! read more

While writing a bad review for another salon (for nails), I felt compelled to write one about Hip Salon. I have read some of these other reviews. I have been a client at HIP since they opened. Whenever I am there, I am greeted with great warmth and hospitality from the girls up front, the guys at the shampoo bowl, my colorist Nick and my stylist Jimmy. Any complaints I have had (and they have been 1 maybe in 7 years) have been addressed promptly and professionally by the owner. I have recommended all of my friends go, and most of them have and still do. It is expensive, but I am telling you, I don't think I have ever NOT received a compliment on my hair. Makes a BIG difference. So kudos to my favorite salon! UPDATE: I'm reading many comments about appointments being messed up. I have been going to this salon since it opened and I have NEVER had an appointment messed up. I do agree on the men's haircut prices--I really don't understand that. I also don't understand why you can't just get a cut and not get a blow dry to help make it more economical. It would also save time for the stylist if someone chose to do that. read more
