We only stayed one night but we loved it!. We stayed in the efficiency which was perfect for the two of us and our pooch. It came equipped with everything you need including plates, utensils, glasses, cutting board, coffee machine etc. The bathroom came equipped with lotion, shampoo, conditioner, bath gel. The room also came with a mini fridge, toaster oven, and because the temperature dropped 20°, we even used the little fireplace/heater. It was really quite lovely. The beach was not far and we were reasonably close to town. So, the location is very convenient. Wen, who I assume is the owner was very warm and welcoming. She was extremely efficient and they definitely take Covid seriously. The room was very very clean. I would say that the room can smell a little a little musty when you first walk in but i had deodorizer which I always bring whenever I travel and it was fine. If you're expecting luxury, this is not the place but it's lovely, nicely decorated and really comes with all that you need. You might say it's retro or old school but it's exactly what you might expect from a cottage. I forgot to mention that there's also a patio area with a Weber grill and lovely wrought iron furniture. The shower was very hot and the bed was comfortable, which is important to me. :) I highly recommend and will definitely be coming back, especially since Hither House is dog friendly! read more

What a fantastic place to stay in Montauk. The staff is so friendly and goes out of their way to make sure you have a nice stay. The owner checks up on you and makes sure you are having a nice day and offers daily towel switch outs if you'd like! The cottages are adorable and very locally close to all the best things to do in montauk. One of the most quaint and nice stays. They have campfires and grills in the back and a whole kitchen inside so we took advantage and made a nice dinner on the grill and it was amazing. The room we had was called the Studio and it was a very nice size and even had a bedroom and 2 extra beds in the main area and the beds were very comfortable. It was clean, beautiful decor, had a full kitchen, bathtub w/shower, TV in main room and bedroom, A/C and wood-burning stove, BBq, outside seating, 10-minute walk to the beach (if you walk slow like us), driving distance from all of Montauk and even East Hampton and is very dog friendly.= and affordable. We stayed at Hither House in October for an unexpected five day vacation and it was wonderful! We had stayed there a number of times in the past and we always loved our favorite cottage, the proximity to beautiful beaches, the ability to have our two small dogs with us and, most importantly, the hospitality of the owner, Ms. Wen Ying Lu. Wen is so welcoming and showed us the improvements made to the cottage since our last visit. Updated bathroom, new furniture, accessories and paint were a nice surprise. Our favorite feature has always been the screened in porch and it has been redone to be both a screened porch and a sun room! What a treat! We had an amazing week at Hither House. It's our 4th stay ! This time we were in the efficiency. It was very cozy and fully stocked with all you need for the kitchen and bathroom. It was peaceful and charming. We loved barbecuing on our terrace, and used the outdoor shower everyday! The beach is a 10 minute walk or you can drive to the town beach or ditch plains beach. Don't understand how someone can write such a negative review. If you read below Monica left a negative review because she cancelled, Mindy left a negative review because the place was awkward? and Kate didn't like it because it wasn't the Four Seasons. Do not listen to these pointless reviews. It's a cabin/cottage, 10 minute walk from the beach, 5 minute drive from shops and restaurants and is a perfect weekend getaway from any sort of city life. I've stayed here for a weekend the past two April's and would fully recommend it. The cabins are well kept, clean, and have all amenities you could ever want. Ocean views, clean, full kitchen, full bathroom, WiFi, free grill, multiple TVs, and large outdoor patio areas for all cabins. It bothers me that people leave negative reviews with no real reasoning other then they like to use Yelp to complain. Stay here. It's worth it! read more

Disgusting! My parents recently booked a room. Upon their arrival they asked to see the room. The room had no curtains on the window and NO bathroom door. When they went to the front desk to inquire they were met with aggression, insults and the threat of violence. They were "thrown out" as well as the twenty -something year old employee/ owner telling my almost 80 year old father that he would "take him out in 5 minutes" The Montauk Chamber of Commerce and the Montauk Beach Property Owners Association have been notified. The location is in a quite neighborhood 5 blocks from a private beach.... The property is clean and landscaping is pleasant. The room is a lil outdate but has everything we needed.... The staff Wen and Lou are very warm and welcoming... you'll bump into each other and always expect a good morning hello and helpful on suggestions for activities ... if you want calm and quite away from the main strip but close enough for short drive for supplies or go to town for dinner you cant go wrong with Hither House.... read more

This is our second stay at Hither House and we have absolutely loved both of our stays. Like others have pointed out this is not a "luxury" hotel. However, there is beautiful scenery and a private beach within walking distance. The cabins are clean and the cleaning crew come every day. Its equipped with a full kitchen and supplies, which we have found works great for us! It's the most peaceful place we've stayed in Montauk. What makes this place extra special is you get to bring your pet and our dog Koda LOVES it. This time around we came to Hither House Cottages for our own wedding, with the ceremony on the private beach. Wen, the owner, was more than accommodating and even bought us a bottle of prosecco for the occasion! The beach was a perfect setting for our ceremony and the cabins were perfect for our guests and after wedding reception/BBQ. I have recommended this place to a few of my friends and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet serene place to stay. read more

I generally would not write a review, especially when a place was not perfect. This place was priced in a mid-range plus accepted pets (for a fee). So, we did not expect much - you get what you pay for. The house was not new, somewhat shabby inside. Living room had a strange smell from either a dilapidated couch or an old chair. I started sneezing almost immediately and had to rush out to buy Benadryl. It took us more than a day to air out the house. Bedroom was fine, no smell, beds were spotless. Mattresses were on a hard side which I liked. Bathroom was clean and in good condition. Kitchen was fully equipped and ready for cooking. It had coffee and a few tea bags but we had to ask for salt and I did not see any sugar around. We had to wash a few plates and utensils as they were not kept to our standards. A garden was well kept, beautiful and serene. This was the best feature of the place. (BTW, ocean would be 10 min walking alongside the road if you were young and in good shape). Would I recommend the place? Probably, as soon as you understand its drawbacks. Check your cottage the same way you check a rental car. Make sure you look at everything and let an owner know if you see anything damaged. Even better - make pictures of the place before you check in! We made a mistake by thinking that a damage we saw on a chair was obviously an old one. The owner charged us for the replacement of the chair. It somewhat ruined our impression of the place and we do not wish the same experience for any other pet owner. Just be prepared and you will have a good stay here! read more

I just came home after spending 3 wonderful nights. It was very clean inside . The area is amazing. I took a nice 10 minute walk to the beach everyday ! Everything you need in the kitchen is provided. Free wifi and two nice big flat screen tv. Bbq grill outside your door. Downtown is 5 minutes away! Oh, the big plus for me is that they are dog friendly. The other big plus was one night it was cold and rainy. There is heat in the cottage but it was so nice to have a wood burning stove. It was a great choice and I can't wait to go back !!! read more

Stay away from this place .... Very nice location BUT the cottage are not exactly what you see in the pics uploaded on the website . We were there for 3 days and the smell was terrible the whole staying . But most important the lady who manages the place is just trying to make budget on people with whatever she can . I recommend all the tenants to ask for a walk through while you are leaving the property because she will most likely call you telling you that you broke something and she will have to charge you . I suggest you to go with air b&b and get something better than this . I stayed in two different cottages and they both have been great, a few of my favorite things are that my 4 legged friends can join me and that they have a full kitchen which helps keep the food costs down. A PET FRIENDLY HOTEL!!! I have my MAX who can be a handful, 70lb german shepard/chow mix and we have stayed here numerous times and we have always had a blast! I have stayed in a few of the rooms and tehy have always been nice and they actually would wait to come to clean the room till we told them it was ok and we were heading to the beach, Max gets VERY PROTECTIVE of my wife and we wouldnt want him growling or barking at the staff. TV: hard to see from bed because of foot board obstructing view Pets: allowed but not on bed / furniture (didn't bring mine) Noise: we had noisy neighbors with lots of tapping and banging. And when housekeeping came to do that room, it was outrageously loud. This place is a little goofy, but given the low price, I kind of just have to suck it up. We arrived when it was dark. The small complex is located in a quiet, unlit neighborhood. To check in, there's some confusion with the two entrances and there was no clear sign as to where the office is. The owner is very kind and friendly, but we only had contact with her for check in. The room was appropriate for our needs, though we didn't need to use the stove top. The bathroom is very small and the shower makes it mostly impossible to shave any part of a leg. The shower head was okay, but looked like someone took a gulp of water and spewed it out of their mouth. THE WATER NEVER REALLY GOT HOT. The heat for the room did not seem to be consistently connected to the thermostat in the room. We needed to open windows to balance the temperature. The grounds were lovely, and the view out the clean window was nice. There is an overhang from the upstairs deck that makes the room a bit cave-like. The outside steps and landing outside the unit's door was DANGEROUS. A real ankle twister if you're not careful. There was a pretty black cat wandering around the buildings, and a scent to prove it. read more

I was really disappointed staying at Hither House. The door didn't lock, the toilet wasn't flushing and the carbon monixide detector went off at 3am, 4am and 5am because of a low battery. I would say you get what you pay for but at $300/night these things shouldn't happen. Wen was very nice and did address the lock and carbon monoxide battery however the toilet was old and it wasn't getting any younger. By Montauk standards, the price is indeed competitive. However, good business is good business. That being said, had our room been discounted because of the aforementioned issues I would not be writing this review. read more

I go to Montauk to be outside as much as possible. I'm going to assume most people do. Having said that, I don't need fancy. I need a clean space with the basics. This place fits the bill. One, it's family owned. Which I love. Not everything is up to date and perfect, but the owner Wen is a joy and so friendly. I'd much rather deal with her than employees who work for a corporate place and act like robots when something is wrong. You get a cottage embedded in a beautiful neighborhood, a 10 minute walk from the ocean, a porch/deck, bbq, a yard area. Yes, you can dig and find faults. But they make a tremendous effort to be clean and polite. Want to complain about the price? She is trying to keep a family-run business open in MONTAUK and is competing against resorts and luxury house rentals. Pause and think about that for a moment before you complain. Facility had two bungalows and both are loaded with mold. We could barely breathe inside. Then when we left three weeks later they charged our credit card for the 2 service animals we brought along without telling us. I will say I left shoes and they mailed them back to me however I would not recommend this place and will never stay there again. read more

My daughter and I are staying here over the Memorial Day weekend. We are staying in the South Cottage. Everything was really clean. And Wen the owner was really nice and accommodating. The beds were very comfortable and we slept really well! Very clean and all the amenities that you have at home for a kitchen area, etc. We brought my daughter's dog and he loved it. The walk to town and the walk to the beach very close. Very peaceful! The grounds are beautiful and everything is kept up. I would recommend this place! Arrived at our cottage which was so nice clean and perfect for our two night stay. we brought our dog who loved playing on the lawn and sleep in the shade the trees gave. Woke up in the morning before beach opened which was a close walk to the beach. We took a stroll on the first day to the food market stopped at Cyril's for lunch (dog friendly) They had a BBQ grill so picked up some fish to grill for dinner. They had a patio table and chair set outside which we had breakfast on before our walk to beach and on the second day to the light house then to Red Hook lobster for lunch (dog friendly) .. great place to stay for two nights that is so close to beach and town for shopping and drinking (Def a plus that Darwin was in heaven with the plush well kept grass) read more

Not terrible not great. Stayed in the studio for New Years clean,but smelt terrible. The fridge smelt like rotten fish. Now the cottages are considered a "motel" for what I paid and how bad it was not worth the price. Yes very cute and close to the water. Allows pets which is great. However, my boyfriend and I were both on the phone when we made the reservation let the lady know we were bringing a dog. We get there everything's paid for and she goes oh I didn't know you had a dog! That's an extra $25 a day. Yet we told her and paid in full a month in advance yet she charged us again! Now I brought food to cook for New Years, BUT the oven was broken! The same and only lady at the desk said oh I don't know how to use the stove. So in the end we had strawberries for two days due to her lack of knowledge or care for anyone staying there. When we checked out we told her again that the oven was broke and she didn't seem to care so don't plan on cooking. Plus side the stovetop works. In the end we paid over $400 for two nights for a pretty piece of crap. read more

If all you want is a perfect little hideaway near the beach for your little family and the dog, then this is the place. The owner, Wen, is very responsive, organized, and welcoming. The cottages are fully equipped; the beds are comfortable; the surrounding area is well-maintained, beautifully landscaped, and quiet. We made full use of the outdoor shower outside of our room. On Saturdays and Sundays there's a lovely little continental breakfast in the gazebo. But nothing topped the daily 10-minute walks down to the dog-friendly beach with our Wheaten (allowed on the beach before 10 am and after 6 pm). We'll be back. read more

Booked here and had to cancel as my mother was ill. They suggested we rebook so we would not be charged cancellation fee. My AMEX was charged 2xs-once for old reservation and one for new and now they are charging me 2 cancellation fees and have not refunded the second charge they made without authorization. I was planning on staying for 4 nights but left after only 2 nights. The cabin smelled musty and I had to keep the A/C on all the time to try to get rid of the smell. The shower head was rusty and just gross, the bathroom smelled mildewy. The whole place is just old and tired and needs a major updating. The furniture smells too. I found it very depressing and I didn't even want to take a shower there, so I left after 2 nights. read more

My husband and I stayed at Hither House, South Cottage, along with our 2 dogs, for 3 nights right after labor day. While the weather didn't exactly cooperate, we had a very nice, relaxing mini vacation. Our own deck with Weber charcoal grill was fantastic. We ate in 2 nights and went out to dinner on the last. We went to Surfside Inn for dinner (a few blocks away) and it was FANTASTIC and very reasonable! Back to HH, if you're expecting the Four Seasons, this ain't it. The cottages could use updating and ours was really pretty dark. My only complaint was the beds. EXTREMELY uncomfortable and there were 2 beds in ours, 1 double and one twin, which was a little disconcerting. The living area was nice with a flat screen HD TV and a wood burning stove for wintertime. Wen, the owner, was a pleasure. So was the housekeeper, Lina. Three blocks from the ocean was great. The dogs loved it! If they get new beds and update the lighting to justify the cost and comfort level, I would have given it 5 stars. Overall good experience, we will be back. read more
