Checked out HK Tea with my husband. I was in the mood for a hot milk tea and my husband ordered one of the specialty teas, Classic Cooper. The hot Classic Milk Tea I ordered was well balanced and not overly sweet at 25% sugar. The Classic Cooper at 50% sugar that my husband ordered was refreshing and a bit sweet. The HK Tea is very clean, modern, and inviting with lo-fi playing in the background. Service was friendly and fast. So I visited this tea shop on a whim before going to a musical and I'm so glad I stopped by. They carry legitimately good Hong Kong milk tea, which is a very strong special type of milk tea and very few places get it right. Their Jasmine Oolong tea is also fantastic. It's very difficult to find tea shops in Austin Texas that carry a blend of Jasmine and Oolong tea. The specific tastes, both nutty and floral and the only comparable tea that I've had that's like it is in Houston. The ambience is super cute and I love that they don't over sweeten their drink drinks. You can adjust the sweetness level easily for most drinks. It's an interesting business model to have a boba shop attached to a pho restaurant. I'm not sure that bubble tea and pho really go well together. Nevertheless, my Hong Kongese friend was excited to put HK Tea to the test. We got the HK lemon tea, and it's very nice that they put "(strong tea)" next to it to inform customers. The shop has really pretty decor. I especially love the cute little potted plants. She asked the employee about the sweetness level, and if it was more on an HK or American sweetness scale. The employee was very friendly and answered her questions thoroughly. He suggested starting at 50% and adding more sugar later. She opted for 25% but then added to 50%. However, the drink was so sour that she said she could probably easily do 100% sugar, and my friend who normally likes 100% sweetness boba would need 200%. I thought the drink was extremely sour as well, and I did not enjoy the taste of it. According to my friend, they added lemon juice to it, which is not standard, and the sourness was stronger than a standard HK lemon tea. We don't expect this drink to be totally authentic as there are different ingredients sold in the US, but it was soooooo sour. It probably would've been better if we had gotten more sugar, so I would give it four stars just for the drink. The part that makes me drop my rating is that we patiently waited 20+ minutes for one drink, and there was no one else ordering drinks during our wait time. When we were called for our pho table, my friend went up to the counter to ask, and it appeared that the employee had just forgotten about it. Really cute place with a peaceful ambiance playing c-pop in the background for a Wednesday afternoon. Would be a really nice place to camp out to study if there were more assccesible plugs. It was nice to play a small board game there, though not the place for huge ones as the tables are more of the small and cute type. Menu isn't huge, but has some unique drinks such as durian or sesame smoothies. Prices seemed fair considering everything has gone up recently. The owners are also very nice, helpful, and communicative. If asked, they are open to explain or answer any questions and emphasize to let them know if theres anything they can do to make the drink better fit your preferences. They are also connected to Pho Phong Luu next door and would make a nice combo either before or after a meal. Had a Classic Milk Tea, 25% sweetness, light ice, with boba and a pandan waffle. Both were really good, though would have preferred a bit less ice. Went with Classic MT instead of the HK Tea since it was the late afternoon, but the tea still kept me up till early morning so you know it's real tea. We stopped here while waiting for a seat to open up next door (Pho Phong Luu) and got some hong kong lemon tea (half sweet/less ice) with taro pudding. Pic shows my drink after I had taken a few sips already, but they do throw in plenty of lemon slices in and squeeze the juice and include lemon pulp. The tea was very STRONG and mildly astringent, which I don't mind...they have great customer service and had a sign out saying they offer drink adjustments if your order is not to your liking. Ordering is placed through a kiosk and my order came out moderately quickly. The cafe was busy, and several people were there to wait for tables for next door, so it's probably not the best place to chill and chit chat if during Pho Phong Luu's busy hours. Both stores are connected, so you can order boba while having a bowl of pho. HK Milk Tea (Cold) - $6.50 5/5 This is quite authentic, and it's supposed to be bitter. I usually order 30% sweetness, but for this drink, I had to order 70%, and I still think it could be sweeter. So if you prefer sweeter drinks, 100% sweetness might be your best bet. They also offer to adjust the sweetness after you try it, which is super nice. Pandan Waffle - $5.75 4/5 It was freshly made, so I had to wait a little--probably around 5 to 10 minutes--which I didn't mind at all. The pandan flavor is subtle. I like the texture: crispy on the outside, with a soft and slightly chewy mochi-like inside. I don't usually eat very sweet things, but this waffle was about 1/5 in sweetness for me. They also sell matcha and cheese dips for $0.75. I feel like this waffle definitely needs a dip. HK Lemon Tea - $6.50 5/5 The tea is strong, and there are slices of lemon in my cup. Here's the absolutely most important aspect of their business that they improved on. The actual authentic taste of what they call Hong Kong Milk Tea. Yes, there is a very distinct difference in the taste of Hong Kong Milk Tea vs any other milk tea you find anywhere else. The tea is stronger and has a very noticeable taste. I've searched FAR and WIDE in the Austin area and unless you want to drive to Houston, this is the ONLY place at the moment that can satisfy your Hong Kong Milk Tea fix. 10/10 I would consider this place a top boba place in Austin. Really great thai tea that's not overly sweet. The ginger soy milk is just okay (I got it hot) and the lychee smoothie is just okay. I decided to try HK Tea out again after eating next door at Pho Phong Luu. It had been about four months since I last came here during their soft opening, so I wanted to give them another chance. I ordered their Chrysanthemum Iced Tea with 25% sweetness and boba this time, and P2 had their Lychee Smoothie at 50% sweetness. I could tell that the workers were diligent in making our drinks, as they carefully measured all the ingredients and checked the finished products before bringing them to us. The presentation of the drinks is on point and IG-worthy. I've got to say I'm impressed by how much they've improved since my last visit. I could taste the Chrysanthemum in my tea, and the boba had a good chew consistency without being too chewy or hard. P2 mentioned that their Lychee Smoothie was very refreshing. Unfortunately, it tasted as if their boba was underprepared, in the sense that no time was given to allow the honey to soak into it. Instead of tasting like Honey Boba, per their menu, it tasted more like honey with boba. Overall, it was a solid, enjoyable experience. I've heard a lot of opposing thoughts about HK tea between it's pretty good vs it's overpriced and the drinks are too watery. I can wholeheartedly agree that it's overpriced because why was my milk tea without any toppings over $7??? But I wasnt disappointed by the milkiness or lack of milk. I think the drinks do run a bit sweeter than other places, but I'm a fan of that. And the HK milk tea is honestly the most authentic Hong Kong style milk tea I've had in the US. HK Tea is a boba shop attached to a Vietnamese restaurant and often becomes the waiting spot for the restaurant during peak hours. They have several different drink options, one of my favorites being the Hokkaido smoothie. I'm not typically a smoothie person at boba shops, but love the flavor of Hokkaido and wish they had it in a regular milk tea form! While the prices are a bit high for current going rates, it's worth it once in a while for me to come here because I haven't been able to find a good Hokkaido drink elsewhere in Austin yet. There is a cute indoor area to enjoy your drink, or they are very quick to prepare your order through Doordash or other services. As I would recommend to any boba shop, maybe the shop could consider offering reusable cups/bottles and offering a discount for bringing them back to help reduce overall plastic use. Great neighborhood spot for boba tea! I ordered the taro smoothie with 75% sweetness which was a good amount for me, and the size of the drink was satisfactory. However it did taste quite powdery. They did a great job with the decor! It's very pretty inside and I loved the flowers. Right next door is Pho Phung Lu, and it's divided by clear sliding doors so you can go sit and order pho after ordering boba and ask them to bring it to the restaurant for you. In terms of remote-friendliness, they provide you the wifi password when you ask for it. There are a few outlets along the wall but the tables are pretty far from them. There's a good-sized parking lot by the building, but Pho Phung Lu brings a lot of traffic during peak meal times. read more

HK Tea is located in a shopping plaza on Dessau Rd. The plaza is next to a Texaco. You'll be entering a bright airy space when entering the shop. There is a connecting door between the this place and the restaurant next door. There are plenty of floral pieces placed throughout the seating area. Ordering can be done at the kiosk or at the counter. I opted to grab a Chrysanthemum Tea at 25% sugar, and Avocado Durian smoothie at 0% sugar. I was satisfied with both: normally I would get milk tea with no sugar, but 25% for the Chrysanthemum seemed to be a good choice. It allows you to taste the floral notes in the tea, which I highly appreciated, and they are not muted out at this sweetness level. For the Avocado Durian smoothie, They had initially suggest they could do 25% sugar, but I pushed for 0%, since durian should be plenty sweet enough in its own. It's unclear which species of durian they use, but the result is a pretty nice durian flavor and fragrance. They do use real durian and avocado. The smoothie is not comparable in flavor to eating fresh durian, but the flavors will definitely remind you of it. The durian flavor seems to be diluted out by the avocado actually, and makes the durian sensation more evanescent, rather than a lingering taste. I would say the olfactory sensation is actually stronger than the taste, and overall, the smoothie is quite refreshing. Both drinks were done well, and service was prompt and very friendly. We came here for some boba teas after our pho next door because our daughter did the whole puppy-eyed begging act for us, and we relented. You order on a touchscreen, McDonald's style, and BE CAREFUL because it defaults to an insane automatic tip which is not deserved since a robot is taking your order and the tea is pricey to begin with. What we did like--and what we had not seen before--is that you can order your "sugar percentage" with your tea order. All of us got our teas with 50% sugar, and in hindsight, we regret it because the full sugar is so much better, and if you're going to have boba teas a couple times a year (like we do), just go all in. All of us stuck to our usual favorite flavors: taro, strawberry, and mango. The tall glasses they use suck because then all the tapioca balls settle to the bottom in a pile and it's impossible to take a sip of the drink without one shooting automatically up the straw. We did not enjoy the fluid mechanics here! As for flavor, meh, but then again that could be on us because we reduced the sugar. Anyway! My experience is solely based on the only drink I got there - roasted black sesame smoothie. After reading a lot of negative reviews about this place regarding drink quality and pricing in the beginning as well as not being recommended by other Vietnamese businesses, I was super skeptical to try. However, after they opened for a while and got some positive reviews about this drink in an Asian Food FB group, I decided to give it a try while they offered holiday discount, and this drink is good. It doesn't contain any tea, so it's ice blended black sesame latte. They also have black sesame smoothie. The difference between the two is they use black sesame powder in black sesame smoothie while the roasted one is from blending the roasted seeds, so it's more natural and a bit grainy. Glad I chose the roasted one - it's creamy and nutty. Pricing is definitely higher compared to other boba tea shops. I saw that their durian smoothie and durian avocado smoothie is almost $12 a drink, which is wild. Teapioca Lounge also offers good durian smoothie as their seasonal drink now and it's half the price. Will I come back to this place for other drinks? In terms of pricing, no because Austin has grown with a lot of boba tea shops now and they offer similar drinks and delicious at a lower cost. This place is unique for offering black sesame drinks, so I'd only come for it. It's conveniently connected to Pho Phong Luu and owned by the same owner I believe. I came in during their soft opening. I decided to try the mandarin kumquat tea. It was really tasty and had mandarin slices in it. The tea was nice and fragrant (I opted for jasmine). Since it was the second day or so that they were open, it did take a while to get my drink (like 15 min), but it didn't bother me and I expected to wait. The kumquat tea, while good, was not very memorable.
