I have been going to the Hofbrau since before I could read a menu and I did not even realize they had anything else on the menu until I was with a friend one day that ordered a calamari sandwich and it struck me "OH! they have a menu here?!?" Since that day I have continued to tell myself that the NEXT time I go I will try something else on the menu; it has been 17 years now and I still have never ordered anything but the roast beef sandwich and fries. I have tried the warm potato salad and the chowder a few times and I am not a big fan of either one. The chowder has too much cream in it for me, I prefer when it is made with milk and roux to achieve the desired creaminess. The warm potato salad sits in the steamer table all day so the potatoes can end up pretty overcooked and I like warm potato salad to have really zippy bite from the vinegar, didn't get that from this one. People tell me they make a delicious burger, calamari sandwich, and the fish & chips are good....maybe someday I will find out for myself, maybe. SERVICE: you line up right in front of the giant piece of roast beef under the heat lamp and order directly from the meat cutter; so the set up is sort of geared to enticing customers into ordering the roast beef. You grab a cafeteria style tray and lay it down on the counter and slide it down the line to towards the cash register. If you order anything from the back kitchen (fries, burgers, fish, etc.) they will bring it out to your table but if you are getting the roast beef, soup, salad, or anything off the front line they just set it on your tray, add any frosty adult beverages you desire and then pay before you sit down. They do bring the food out to your table they do not expect you to clear your own table and they will bring refills of beverages to the table if you ask so you should leave a tip at the front when you pay. Everyone I have delt with in the 20+ years I've been visiting the Hofbrau has been friendly and professional. LOCATION/DECOR: The current location is not the place I grew up going to. It is a little less interesting building but is probably better exposure for them (not that they really needed that, lines going out the door every time I went) Since they opened the new location they have added some stuff to make a little more like the previous location. When they first opened it was really kind of drab inside. They have deck seating that looks over the bay and faces Morro Rock. If you have ever been to Morro Bay then you would know that the deck seating is rarely an ideal temperature for dining. They don't have as much room at the current location either so they have less beers on tap and people don't really hang out there like they did at the other location but its not the decor that you come for; YOU COME FOR THE BEEF. TIPS: Order the mini roast beef its is plenty of food. I like to take a spoonful of the strait horseradish, a spoon full of the whole mustard, a 1/4 spoon full of the cracked pepper and a couple of dashes of malt vinegar and mix it all together in the little paper ramekins and spread it on the beef.....It. The roast beef French dip is pretty excellent. You place your order in front of a huge slab of roast beef. I got a regular size but should've gotten the smaller version. It's a lot of food you're getting. I don't know why you would order anything else. The person took our order and immediately started carving heavy slices of meat and piling them high on the bread. My partner got a bratwurst with sauerkraut dip and he was very disappointed that he didn't get the roast beef. You can sit outside right on the water or inside if its windy (which it was) and still have a really decent view of the bay. It was moderately crowded for a Tuesday afternoon so I would assumed this place gets packed on the weekend. read more

My clients told me about this place and sure enough it was there and the beer authentic! I was going to get some German food, but because of my location I just had to get the fish & chips. I ate here two consecutive nights based on the Yelp reviews. I'm a long time Morro Bay visitor and, remarkably, hadn't eaten here. First, everything you hear about the Beef Dips is true. They are FANTASTIC! I was also very impressed by the service - especially the attractive and polite young lady who made the sandwiches. The second night is the reason for 4 and not 5 stars. I ordered German food - as I love it. This was not good German food. It didn't qualify as "nasty" but it was close. The bratwurst was overdone, the sauerkraut just ok, but the German potato salad was horrid and ruined the meal. So- go here but by all means just order the Roast Beef! read more

This was my first time here and it was great. If you want an environment that's chill and good food, this is the place. Get the French dip!!! There was so much meat I could only eat one side of it. First time trying the Hofbrau and we were pleasantly surprised! There's a patio right on the water with an entire wall of windows facing the water for the whole dining room. You walk right up to the counter to place your order. They have a giant roast beef ready for carving right at the counter. Extremely tasty clam chowder with delicious red potatoes and big pieces of clam. The Hofbrau is out new favorite spot for clam chowder. Fish and chips had a great golden crispy batter on the fish and a light coating on the fries as well. The roast beef sandwich was great as well, but make sure you're hungry it's a monster! I was served the first roast beef sandwich of the day on our most recent visit in June 2018. It was amazing, even better, if that is possible, than usual. They have the best beer batter type fish and chips, seriously. Consistent. Always one of our must go to places to eat in Morro Bay. My husband and I were there a lot a lot during his cal poly years in the early eighties, although at their original location further south on Embarcadero. We got into Morro Bay around 9 ish from Sacramento and we were starved. This was one of the only places open on main street so seeing that we were starved we quickly ordered our food. The place was packed, but still comfortable. Just walking in seeing the man carve the beef I knew this was going to be a good place to eat. I had the fish and chips, and let me tell you it was some of the best fish and chips I had. The crust was flaky to perfection and even the tartar sauce was real good. The only thing was the crust could use a little more flavor, but this was quickly fixed with tabasco and extra tartar sauce. We ate near the window so we had the water/Morro Rock view. The atmosphere was very family friendly, and we had a good time in the restuartant without having to feel we were being too loud or everyone was looking at us. Now when I fell off the seat laughing everyone was looking at me, but they started laughing along with me. Yes! people from Sacramento like to have fun. Was with a group of friends this morning and planning to have breakfast at the Otter Rock....but....some of us decided we didn't want breakfast....and came over here to the Hofbrau for some really good hand carved roast beef! They also do seriously good German food to go with that. The sandwich? Literally carved in front of me, with swiss cheese and dipped in au jus just before spending a minute in the panini oven. Was perfectly done. Clam Chowder on the side and a Sierra Mist completed the order. Not only was it faster than waiting for service at the Otter, it was a bit cheaper and tasted wonderful! Parking around here is tight, use the big parking lot and enjoy the walk up. Prices were reasonable. The view of Morro Rock and the bay? Wow! Even with the rain and fog mist, still Wow! Very casual restaurant with everyone talking and enjoying themselves. Hand Carved Roast Beef French Dip is what they are known for. Really good sandwich with great proportions. A cross between german restaurant and surf shop, Hofbrau made for a good dinner in Morro Bay when most other places were closed. The food was better than average, my roast beef was juicy, cut off fresh. Unfortunately the sauerkraut and potato salad really sucked. The staff was extremely kind and helpful helping my dad with his selection. Very comfortable environment, wood benches and tables and getting your food at the counter means you can get down to business ASAP. Let me just say that before I had gone here, I thought I had experienced the best sandwiches to be eaten. I was wrong. It was here that I got the best sandwich ever. The french dip sandwich. The meat WAS carved in front of us and it was so freakin mouthwatering and good, it's making me salivate right now just thinking about it. We also ordered a side of clam strips and those were good. After looking around at menus we decided to stop here and have dinner. The waiting line was very very long but it seemed that the customers were very loyal and that the food was very good. What made us make the loooong line was the cheaper prices, in comparison with other local seafood restaurants in Morro Bay. You must know this restaurant is very low key, you make a long line to order and then you sit down and they bring the food to your table. They have tables outside and inside. It gets pretty cold outside so if you want a table inside you have to wait longer. We had the shrimp, calamari, and chips and a soup. I must say, everything was absolutely delicious... Worth the wait! The restaurant also has bakery, on the other side of the building. We are definitely stopping there for a cinnamon roll! But in addition to rolls they have a great variety of chocolate and truffles, and they all look delicious and affordable! read more

The Hofbrau is one of my GoTo places when I want a great lunch, fast. The hand-carved roast beef sandwiches are piled high with meat. It offers beautiful views of the Bay, so you can watch the seals and pelicans while you enjoy your meal. Great clam chowder too. The salad bar is small but offers a nice selection of toppings. Gets pretty busy in the summertime, but if you're on the Embarcadero visiting Morro Bay, it's great place to stop for a bite! read more

The wife and I stumbled into here, mid-day for a bite to eat and walked right into the owner of the shop. He said that he has been there for almost 40 years! That's crazy! and incredible dedication. He was busy and moving very quickly. It's certainly a breath of fresh air to see the owner of a place right at the front and really hustling and not in the back somewhere barking orders. I watched him make a hot pastrami and I immediately wanted one. Over all I would say that the menu is somewhat limited and not at all what I expected from a place called Hofbrau Der Albatross but still - very yummy stuff.
