Wow, I would say this was our favorite place on our recent trip to Austin, tucked away on a side street off of West 6th it is a true hidden gem although no hidden handshake was needed to enter the converted spacious quonset hut. Out side under cover were rows of picnic tables, beer was served inside and the food was brought out. While the beers were outstanding, the food was unexpected, beyond the burgers which we did not try, they had a few interesting dishes such as a Crispy Artichoke & Pimento and a Indian chickpea inspired take on the chili Frito pie, both were excellent and we are not vegetarians, we just wanted to try something new. The smoky Rauchbier styled Marzen (?) was unusual and worth a taste but a pint was a little over the top. Note for those who commented on slow service we were there on a Wednesday and there were no issues, I am sure a nice weekend might be another experience. read more

Better Half is always on the top of my list for recommendations, and Hold Out is a great addition next door. They have a good selection of beers, from porters to juicy IPAs to a grapefruit sea salt paloma beer (which I haven't tried but want to!), and a very good food menu. Also wine and sangria. I'm going to have to do another review here, because all I got was one drink, but oh my gosh what a fantastic drink. It might be one of my new favorite drinks in Austin. Hold Out used to be my favorite spot to grab a beer, salad, and burger since it has a nice outdoor patio and tasty food. The last several times I've visited there's been something that's gone wrong, like 1 hr+ food wait times after ordering and food being served cold, but I was willing to give it another chance because I used to have great experiences there. I just visited Hold Out on a weeknight and had an inexcusably bad experience. I ordered a salad with fried chicken (extra cost) and the chicken was served partially raw. I took it back to the order taker and showed her the raw chicken (photo attached) and she had the kitchen send me a new side of fried chicken. She didn't even have them replace the salad the raw chicken was sitting on. My dad was in the restaurant business and thought the manager should know about the raw chicken, so he pulled the manager aside to share this feedback. The manager apologized, but clearly the whole situation turned our night out into a negative experience and the manager did nothing to make it better. My boyfriend has a bad habit of eating my food before I do (he actually ate a piece of the raw chicken!). A silver lining may be that he stops doing this in the future. read more

It's a good vibe in the city. Certain food pricing is expensive for what you're getting. Chicago dog = delicious but a bit expensive Salad worth it. It's huge Curly fries. Cool place! Tucked behind better Half cafe. We liked how they had outdoor seating and were kid and dog friendly. We tried their lager and their Mexican lager and actually weren't a fan of either - very crisp and tasted almost like an ipa/seltzer. We also had the hardest time parking, it's super hard to come by and we drove around twice and had to street park somewhere else. Beer service was fast but they said food output was already an hour wait so we skipped out on that. read more

Just ordered the chicken and pancakes for brunch and I didn't realize until a few bites in that the pancakes were raw on the inside. I also ordered a coffee and it's self service but there was no coffee left so I had to flag down an employee to have them brew a new batch which took 15 minutes. This place is great, and I would go back! I have comments below on the patio, food, and service. Pro: The patio is big. We made a reservation for 6:30 p.m. on a Saturday, though, so I can't speak about the wait if you just show up. It was a beautiful night, though, and this was a great patio for a warm night. Con: The gravel they use in their patio is hard to walk on to get around the patio. We had a hard time walking up it to our table, and we were wearing sneakers. We also watched one woman fall while trying to walk on it. It's not a great surface for a large patio. So, wear flats or sneakers when you come here, for real, and walk slow. No heels or wedges! They do have a stone path, but it's not very wide. Multiple people can only walk on it if they're in a single file. Also, the stone path doesn't get you everywhere in the patio. Pro: The food is delicious. We were real excited about the curly fries. I got the Classic Burger without cheese, and my boyfriend got the 50/50 Burger. The Classic was good. Con: The 50/50 Burger didn't taste great to my boyfriend. He didn't love the burnt onion bacon jam. Con: The waitress we started off with wasn't very good. She disappeared at some point and was replaced by a guy. We think she was at the end of her shift? Maybe that's why she wasn't great? The guy was more like a manager-type who was also helping clean up tables and checking in with others - at least that was our impression. He was wonderful! We had a much better time once he took over our table. The waitress didn't seem to care very much; she didn't come over to our table enough; I asked her what the comeback sauce was (she didn't know or seem to care), and I was asking to make sure there wasn't any milk or cheese in it for dairy intolerance purposes; I asked if "French's" meant mustard, and she didn't know that either (again, asking to make sure it wasn't something dairy). read more

Got a sneak peek during their soft open. I loved the beer. They make very drinkable brews, which is a nice change of pace since most microbreweries seem to just try and see who can cram the most hops into a bitter IPA. The food was also delicious. Loved this place! All of the beers we tried were great. Not necessarily knock your socks off beer but definitely quality, good beer. I like that then allow smaller pours such as 8oz and 10oz. The staff was super friendly and easy to talk to and ask questions. Boyfriend and I both ordered the Hold Out Classic burger and it was just that - a classic burger with smash style patties. Super tasty. I ordered the comeback sauce on the side which helped make the burger not so messy. The curly fries were good too although I felt they were a little over cooked (but my boyfriend liked them crispy). If we lived in Austin, we would definitely be returning to Hold Out! Oh and also great seating options from indoor, outdoor with a covered patio and then non-covered outdoor seating. read more

A kid devourable kitchen sink salad merried with a happy Dad chomping on a flavour wheel of a Chicken Bacon Burger, essentially a double merry-goround of chicken with bacon, that paired nicely with a Shampoo Horn IPA. Good place if you're looking for a lively spot to take friends or out of towners into the heart of Austin. Good drink prices and a good selection of beers, but I didn't find the two beers I tried to be anything special. They have a great food menu and the burger is really good, but it took quite a while for my food to come out. The ordering process was also a little chaotic -- long, long lines and loud music at the counter so it's hard to communicate with staff. Parking can be a nightmare if the lot in the back is full, and the roads are very narrow and uneven when you arrive at the brewery. Ultimately I think this is a good place for those looking to get the Austin experience, but I don't think I'll add this place to my usual rotation. read more

In this town, if feels like there's a brewery popping in every corner. I'm not complaining, simply making an observation. But what this means though is that you have to do something to stand out. You can't just brew your own beer and sell it in the warehouse, those days are gone. Hold Out has a unique and very advantageous situation. They're next to Better Half (I think they're the same owner or partners?) and make great use of the property together as well as the opportunity to collaborate. Additionally, Hold Out has their own food. While their menu isn't as complete as Better Half's, it's pretty decent for a "happy hour at the brewery" trip. But you can't asses them without considering the Better Half contribution, which I've reviewed separately and loved. The beer is good, although it lacked range in variety as there wasn't much darker beer. A lot of IPA selections, which I'm sure the market loves...but I don't. I stuck to the lager and a couple other beers, all with weird names but I guess that's the game these days. I had the vegan frito pie which was way more delicious than expected and had an interesting mix of flavors. Of course, it all tied in well because we had dinner from Better Half and I don't need to tell you how good that was. You gotta try the grilled halloumi, trust me. All in all, good vibe, great property. read more

We came here for brunch-- while the food was pretty good, I was pretty underwhelmed with the whole experience. Two main issues: No one stopped by our table *at all* for more than 20 minutes. Not only that but I caught the eye of a few servers and they just kept on moving to other tables. Eventually we had to walk up to the front desk and ask for our server. And this is with a reservation, sitting front and center to boot-- it's not as if we snuck in and they didn't see us. Awkward timing continued when the food came out. My fries came out and ... another 15 minutes later, once those were cold and almost done, and everyone else was finishing their food, my burger came out. I understand timing isn't always perfect, but is it that hard to sync up burger + fries when you're making both those items all day long? Curly fries were very tasty. Burger was decent but super thin fast-food-like patties (they described this as "smashed" patties). Kinda reminded me of a double-double from In-And-Out-- not the worst thing! read more

Obsessed. The lunch special chicken sandwich had me doing a double take at the price: $3.98!!! And it ain't small. Went with my husband for lunch on a Thursday. We found the big parking lot in the very back- for being smack dab in west downtown/Clarksville, was shocked at how much parking they have. We sat on the patio- cute spot, doing a great job at keeping everything safe and spaced out. The food: I had the Comeback Chicken Sandwich, my husband had the classic burger and we shared the poutine. Food was fantastic, everything was amazing. I will be back for the beer!
