Came with some long time fans of this place to see if the hype was real. They are closing at the end of August in case you want to stop by. The service is good and the bathroom was way cleaner then anticipated. Crispy beef: One of their favorite dishes, I thought it was pretty good. Fried spicy tofu: One of their favorites, if you scrape up the garlic and seasoning to eat together it's fine. Not a fan of tofu but you could think it was bread if you didn't know. Dry flat noodles with pork: A tad salty but overall pretty good. Black pepper beef: Very chewy, not at all peppery, and decidedly average. Spicy eggplant with pork: No one liked this. Rice: Not sticky enough for eating with chopsticks. I didn't have anything very authentic, but for classic Chinese carryout you can do much worse. read more

Tried Hollywood East Cafe for the first time with family friends today and I would absolutely go back. Glad they were open on Easter and the Owner actually came around to chat with diners throughout the meal. She was very sweet. Decor is low key and simple. I think we ordered at least one of everything so I will go over my top five choices for new diners. The chicken curry pastry puffs, steamed pork and shrimp dumplings, steamed spinach crab and shrimp dumplings, Pork Buns and fried sesame balls with sweet lotus paste are delicious! I would absolutely get each of those again just for me :). Everything came out hot and delicious. One order never made it out to our table which is really the only reason for the 4/5 stars. Still offers free parking and accepts both cash and credit card. If you order takeout, they are an elaborate pick up process. The staff is live on a computer tablet and you tell them your name for the order. They also accept contactless payment. Once you pay for your order, a staff member comes out with your food. Their pork belly was okay. It was a bit dry and the skin was not crispy. Their noodle dishes were good. Beef brisket with tendon was really good. Their salted fish was surprisingly flavorful. If you like spicy food, their spicy wonton definitely hits the spot. Worth checking out. Kingdom pork chop was delicious and crispy. Their fish and veggies were fish and plenty of fish fillet. Went there for lunch one weekend and decided to do a hybrid of dim sum and a La carte entrees. For the former they don't have a cart going around, but a paper menu where the desired dishes and quantities are marked off with the pencils provided. They have a big selection and more vegetarian options than other dim sum places (2 kinds of veggie dumplings, veggie buns, rice rolls wrapped around fried cruller). We got an order of sesame balls and veggie buns. From the regular menu we got mapo tofu (sans pork) and veggie mu shu. The dim sum came out first and was piping hot (not sitting in a cart). Both items were very good (especially the sesame ball- it was crispy on the outside the melt in your mouth soft and chewy on the inside). The main courses were generously portioned, well/seasoned and not overly salty. The mapo tofu had a spicy kick but was not overwhelming. Will be back for more dim sum! read more

We've been enjoying Hlooywood East since the late 90's & they were located in a small strip mall in Wheaton. Then a location on University Blvd.& finally in the Wheaton Mall. Our long time friend, Alan Talbert first took us it's been our go to place for delicious food. Favorites are the crispy fried tofu with Jalapeno, eggplant in garlic sauce, Singapore noodles & hot & sour soup. Will miss this place very much! I absolutely love this place and have been a long time customer. Unfortunately my combination fried rice tasted old or leftover and not fresh. The rice clumped together, the vegetables were not fresh. At one point I thought I was given someone's leftover's. I'm not sure if it's because they are closing their current location in a few weeks and taking short cuts or if they were short on cooks. It definitely was not up to their normal standards!!! I can't believe it's taken me so long to write a review about this place. I don't know where to start, so I'll keep it simple: This place is amazing. Go here for Dim Sum, get everything you know you'd like and then get some random stuff just to try it and see if you like it. It's amazing. My family drives here for special meals a couple times a year all the way from Richmond, VA--about 3 hours away if the traffic is decent. And we do it because the food is fantastic. My favorite item are the golden pork buns, but really, there are so many wonderful things on the menu. And it's affordable too! Grab a couple friends you don't mind splitting plates with, because everything has 3-4 pieces per plate. Each plate is about $3-7. You end up incredibly full by the end of the meal, having only spent maybe $60-70 or the whole table. Go try this place!!! read more

Earlier this week, with very little notice to the restaurant, over a dozen of my family members and I descended upon Hollywood East Cafe for a dinner gathering. It could not have been easy. But, as always, Janet Yu and her team handled the event masterfully. The service was spot on. The meal was absolutely delicious. And Mrs. Yu was ever ready to answer questions, recommend dishes, and ensure that everyone was had a fine time. My wife, children, and I have been loyal Hollywood East customers for decades. I have patronized this restaurant for over 25 years both in the current location and when it was on University Blvd. It's always been a great dim sum restaurant. There are certain people in the dim sum universe that if you see them in a restaurant you know it's a good place. That was the case with Hollywood East. But I fear no more. I was here only a few months ago and it was as good as ever. But not so this weekend. Many of the steamed dumplings were dry. The sauce for pan fried dumplings was brought to the table in a bottle. The pork in baked pork buns was ground pork, not traditional Chinese barbecued pork. Same for the crepe noodles which also lacked the sweet soy based sauce usually served with them. The professional wait staff many of whom had been here for years were no where to be found. Another great area dim sum bites the dust. read more

Dim sum in the mall! Seat yourself inside or outside (ie outside the restaurant but still in the mall), order via QR code. We only had a few things, they all came pretty fast, they were all pretty good through great. We had golden roast pork buns - 5* if you like sweet. Pan fried pork dumplings - 5*. Steamed shrimp, scallop, watercress dumplings - 3.5* (very sticky wrapper). Deep fried glutinous pork dumplings - 4* also a little sweet but not as much as the pork buns. Everything came in 3s which is the worst number dining with 2. Oh well. But, our meal came out to less than 30 with tax and tip. Definitely will come try other dishes. I do prefer ordering to carts in general, you get what you want and don't have to watch sadly while the cart you want turns away before it reaches you for the fifth time as you say no thanks to the chicken feet for the 8th time. read more

I've been on a hunt for good dim sum since oriental east closed down, and saw this place. This place is pretty easy to get to and is very spacious. Everyone seemed very friendly. I went on Saturday after Chinese New Year (CNY), and I guess they were planning to do a lion dance at 11am. We got there right when it opened at 10am. The hostess looked hesitant to sit me since she had reservations for people who wanted to eat and watch the show. I promised her I'd be out by 1030, because let's be real. I grew up with dim sum and already knew what I wanted before I even arrived. And she seemed to know that I was being serious, so she sat us down. Thank you hostess, if you're reading this! I've been coming to this spot for many years now (since 2013). Although, I do not come as often as I wish. I have always been greeted by the owners who were a super cute older couple. I remember when the lady owner told me that her husband had passed and now she was all alone trying to keep this place going. It felt like he was my relative so I gave her a hug and told her as long as she was opened, I would stop by to show my support. They have a variety of cocktails and an extensive food menu. I will not lie, from 10 different dishes I have tried, there was one that I did not really like. However, that really depends on the person who is trying. Besides, we all have different taste buds. We are Chinese so know good Chinese food. Hollywood East Cafe used to be a shining hotspot with great food back in the early 2000's. Today, they are nothing like they were. We went there for dim-sum. It was not fresh. Everything was heated up vs. fresh and lukewarm at best. Quality of the food tasted like something prepackaged from a grocery store. Owner said she wasn't sure about keeping the business open, so probably wasn't looking to improve anything. We won't be going back. read more

You won't believe me. A mall restaurant nestled in near the Piercing Pagoda and the phone cover cart cannot be worth five stars. But this one is, trust me. At least for Dim Sum. We drove here on the weekend specifically for the Dim Sum, served until 2 PM (I think.) The trip is 240 miles round trip. Just for the food. It had to be good. This is the most well organized approach to Dim Sum I have seen. Unlike the several options here in the Richmond area, the dim sum carts are constantly restocked, constantly circulating, and offer wide varieties of dishes. The various steamed and browned dumplings, the shrimp dishes, the pork buns (!!!), the crepes, and even the egg custard tarts were all excellent. The only slight issue was getting the check. This took about 15 minutes too long. But that is a minor thing. I was slightly concerned (but rolled with it) that the order card had no pricing -- you select each bamboo or covered dish with four or five bites of something and the server just adds another tick mark on the card on your table. But at the end of the day, the three of us ate so well we had to go walk at the national zoo for several hours before we could drive home, and the cost was under $60. Will we make the trip again? Yes, at some point. Will we make a point of stopping there if within 30 miles for any reason? You betcha. read more

One of my worst experiences at restaurants. There were six of us including a birthday woman. We dined at the Chinese restaurant, Hollywood East. First they didn't bring the birthday woman her dish and waited for 35 minutes to say that they could not prepare it as they didn't have all the ingredients. Next they didn't serve three of us brown rice even though we asked for it. Next they didn't bring my partner's dish even though they promised it several times for almost an hour. Yes, it came out an hour later but not until I entered the kitchen and complained. When they brought out her dish, it was very greasy with an overdose of msg. The waiter promised three separate checks as we were three couples but instead told us afterwards they could not do that because we should have ordered through an app which no one told us about nor could they give us an itemized printout. Yet after five minutes of complaining, they brought out separate checks with itemized printouts. When they brought out the checks, they charged us 25% more than the menu prices. They claim that the menu had the pre covid prices. They also charged me three extra,dollars for a third bowl of rice that was not ordered . While we were leaving the restaurant, they claimed that one of our party didn't pay his bill for him and his wife. However I witnessed his paying for it as well as adding a tip. read more

Despite a really challenging first experience with Hollywood East Cafe, I eventually decided to give the restaurant another shot when one of my friends recommended that we try dim sum and we struggled to find a place with as many pescatarian and vegetarian options as Hollywood East. To my pleasant surprise, the second time around wasn't nearly as traumatizing as the first! My initial impressions of Hollywood East Cafe were fearful that I would repeat my prior experience -- it's still in the basement of a giant shopping mall, which doesn't exactly breed the most confidence in its authenticity, and the place was completely empty when we arrived (granted, we did come a bit later, at about 1:30 PM on a Saturday, so perhaps it was just an off hour). They didn't have dim sum carts, and instead we just ordered our dishes off of our phones (or, eventually, when we started ordering more, we just told the server), but the food came out suspiciously fast...within mere minutes of us placing the orders, as though it had either been reheated in the microwave or kept under a heat lamp the entire time. Despite all of these initial red flags, the food was surprisingly pretty solid, particularly their steamed dishes! Their shrimp chang fen was quite tasty -- the noodles were smooth and thin, and were cooked a near-perfect length of time, and the shrimp inside was still juicy and springy. Their shrimp crystal dumplings (har gao) were also quite refreshing and had a phenomenal ratio of shrimp to wrapping. The pescatarian dim sum items weren't quite enough (although they did have a really expansive menu of seafood options), so I ended up ordering one of their fish entrees for the table. I was indecisive about what to order, so I asked the server to select the most authentic steamed dish...she recommended the steamed whitefish fillets with mixed vegetables which, while tasty, was quite plain and definitely not anywhere close to authentic. Even so, it was still tasty and nutritious, and the rest of the dim sum items we sampled were delightful, so no complaints there! My (non-pescatarian) friends also tried out their fried taro balls, short ribs, and steamed pork buns, and they had glowing reviews of each one, particularly the pork buns (I think we ended up ordering three or four orders of them to be split between three people). We also tried out their egg custard buns, which were wonderful and not overwhelmingly sweet. All in all, I'm grateful that I gave Hollywood East Cafe another chance and had a really delightful meal! There are still definitely better dim sum options across DC, but this one is a solid choice. read more

Generally good dim sum that is now easier to order from a paper menu if you know your way around dim sum than to get from the carts that Hollywood East used to feature. The restaurant is just inside of the mall, and there is garage parking just outside of the restaurant. Most of the dishes have 3 pieces, so consider asking for a knife if you want to share, and you may want to get an order of Gai Lan (Chinese broccoli) if you want more vegetable than what comes in dumpling. Speaking of dumplings, we particularly like Steamed Chives and Shrimp, and we also love the rice crepes, especially the shrimp. read more

We love Hollywood East and have been going for many many years. This place has been great through the pandemic- we usually get carry out. This time though we ate inside (1st time anywhere in 2+ yrs) and it was just as delicious of course. Dim sum all day is the best! The ordering is on your phone and you open a tab so you can order more as needed. The tables are spread apart and even with others there we didn't feel uncomfortable. Get the shrimp noodle dim sum, the chicken buns, and don't forget an order of pan fried noodles with shrimp or chicken. Some of our favorites for sure. read more

Great spot for dimsum located inside Wheaton Mall. We went on a Sunday for lunch and it was not very busy. There are QR codes at every table and the online ordering is very easy to use. It's a nice change to see everything in one place on the menu (as opposed to traditional dimsum!) We had very good service, a lot of friendly young people working. While I was put off by the idea of it being in a mall before ever eating here, I was pleasantly surprised at how the lack of windows doesn't really affect the ambiance that much. What struck my family was how much variety there was!! Then the quality - nothing tasted off. It was all perfectly satisfying and fresh tasting. The second time we came here was a holiday Monday morning and there were no carts, just dim sum off the menu. This was even better because we had access to alllll the options they offered. My boyfriend and I were super impressed with the dimsum takeout from here. It was fresh with generous servings, and I felt very safe when picking up from the door with their advanced video monitoring service. We think it may even beat our longtime favorite Hong Kong Pearl! I stopped in for a quick bite to eat after shopping. I had not eaten at the new location since it moved years ago, and was pleasantly surprised. I started with the shrimp toast, which were excellent! They are topped with sesame seeds and the shrimp topping was smooth and tasty. The egg drop soup was flavorful and not too thick! For my main course, I had the hunan chicken lunch special. The Spring roll was rather boring after the delicious shrimp toast and egg drop soup. The portion of hunan chicken was generous loaded with broccoli and a savory not too spicy hunan sauce. This is the second time we've ordered takeout from here in the last year. I wanted to support them because I read the article in the Washington Post & understand they have been struggling. But I will never order from here again. The last time our order was more than 45 minutes late coming out, so this time I made sure to place my order 2 hours ahead, at 3:30 for a 5:30 pickup. This place used to be one of our regular spots. Last year on Christmas they closed orders early so this year we planned accordingly and ordered on December 23, with a scheduled pick up time of 6pm. When I arrived takeout orders from 4:30 pm were still not out yet amidst a crowd of 40+ hangry diners. When new customers arrived, there was a 20 minute line to cancel orders. Solid dim sum! The carts come by regularly and they have a nice selection. We had shumai, beef noodle, pork buns, eggplant with shrimp, veggie dumplings, and rice wrapped in taro leaves (I think?), as well as pineapple buns and red bean balls for dessert. Everything was tasty, although my favorites were the veggie dumplings and the shumai. The only thing I didn't like was the eggplant - it didn't have a lot of flavor. We should have been like the Goldsteins who got seated before us but arrived after us. This was Christmas Day. So I knew it would be busy but didn't realize reservations could be made. The Goldsteins made reservations. The host said it was only a 20 minute wait. It turned out to be 52 minutes. We watched an entire waiting crowd by the door clear out after they got their tables. We also watched groups of people who came after us get seated. Our group was only 3 people. After watching another group of 3 or 4 who came in after us at the 40 minute mark, I finally said to the host, that group came in after us. His response was that they made reservations. Okay, I get it. People made reservations but you have to incorporate in the queue those who didn't unless you intend to serve only those who made reservations. I was extremely disappointed in how this was handled. But if you say something, he might make you wait even longer. Twenty minutes is a big difference from 52 minutes! And what was even more frustrating was that everyone who was standing by the host's stand could see a couple sitting at their table (situated at the front behind the host's stand) with one plate of food reading their books. Yes, they brought books to read on an extremely busy day where the average wait for non-reservation holders was one hour. They were there before we arrived so I can only say that they did not order anything for over an hour and just sat their reading. I know. I stood there for 52 minutes. I'm surprised the manager didn't come by to let them know that their table was needed. This day was extremely poorly managed. There have been the rare occasion that we were dining in a busy restaurant and servers have kindly let us know that the table was needed for the next guests. We had no problem leaving promptly after that. The food was fine though many of my favorites did not make appearances. Many items also had to be ordered several times before it finally arrived. Our tea order had to be given to three different people. The jasmine tea was very faint even towards the end of the meal. It was nothing more than drinking water. Tea usually takes time to seep and gets dark at meal's end but not in this case. I hope they did not re-use the tea leaves. As others have commented, their prices are slightly high. read more

We then received soup that no one ordered. (The employee just dropped it off on the table & left!.) We got our appetizers, then our entrees 30 seconds later. Did not have enough plates & silverware for all of us! We had to ask for them. Then our server never checked on us the entire time until we were completely done eating. If you go to this restaurant, get it to-go. The only reason we weren't so upset was because the food was delicious. But we will never go back and sit down there!! read more
