I have been wanting to check out Holy Smoke for approximate 2 years. It was recommended by a former student. My wife, son and I drove up from Bergen County, NJ on a Saturday. We arrived around 1 p.m. and there was only a couple of guys eating at one table in the dining room. The waitress, Deanna, was very polite and accommodating, giving us ample time to peruse their menu and their extensive list of tap and bottled beers. My wife went with her favorite, Baby-back ribs and 2 sides while my son and I decided to share the "Pig-nic" 4 choices of meat and 4 sides with 3 cornbread. We chose 1/2 rack of St. Louis rib, pulled pork, Texas brisket, and Chorizo; we could have substituted BBQ chicken for one of the meats). Being a December day, we also ordered up the soup of the day - chicken soup (which in one way this was a big mistake). Not that the soup wasn't good. It was excellent! The problem was the size of the serving; it was a meal in itself. We knew that if this was any indication of the portion sizes we were in for a massive meal. My wife's ribs and sides were very good and a big portion. For a petite lady, she ate about half and the rest went home for lunch the next day. The Pig-nic was massive. My college age son and I conquered about half of it and the 4 sides (garlic smashed potatoes, creamed spinach [which was outstanding], cole slaw and apple sauce). It was our lunch the next day. Food was all very good, properly cooked, not dry or hard. We really enjoyed some interesting beers and my wife enjoyed a raspberry hard cider. All in all a very enjoyable visit. It is a bit out of the way if you are coming from New Jersey but worth the drive. We will be back. read more

I've been meaning to write a review on this place so now that I have time here it goes.I took my father and sister here on Father's Day Early evening I was warned not to go but I didn't listen boy was I sorry I didnt .Im giving 1 star as for the service as are waitress was okay she place the forks and knives down with meat still on them .I would've walked out but I believe in giving them a chance .Ordered drinks then had to chase someone down to get another .The food was disgusting we got steak all bones no meat on it .Then I ordered something called trash ribs it was all fat that you bit into and ball of grease gross I will never go there again. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. The service was extremely slow even though there were only 3 tables. I ordered the ribs. They were so overcooked. I almost choked trying to swallow. They were inedible. When I asked the waitress if they are always served this way she just shrugged and walked away. They are also not follow safe Covid guidelines. We decided to give this place a try - I grew up in Mahopac but never stopped by here, mostly because from the outside it looks more like a bar than a restaurant and I hadn't really ever heard anyone talk about it - good or bad. But our pediatrician actually mentioned it a couple of times for the beer list and the food being good, so we gave it a shot last night. I was a little apprehensive when we got there because there was a fairly large group of people smoking right at the entryway, and the parking lot was totally packed - made it again seem more like a bar, and with a 1 year old in tow I wasn't sure how it would go. When we walked in, I again felt a little apprehensive because it looks a little divey, and it took quite a while to get acknowledged and seated - but to be fair there was a group of 50 people there for some event. The bartender was also our waitress, and she was really friendly and helpful - and kept apologizing for the delay in attending to us. Once we were seated I didn't mind waiting a bit anyway. The ambience was interesting. Granted, we were seated in the main dining room where there were two other families, and then the 50 people took up the better part of the room and were super loud (one guy kept slamming his arm on the table for some reason), but they were friendly. The other two families there were regulars, one actually being our pediatrician (who had recommended it to us a couple of months ago), and the waitstaff all knew them well so I thought that bode well. The staff was all super friendly too. The beer list was awesome - a lot of harder to find beers on tap, and I love that you can get a flight and pick whatever you want. We ordered the brisket melt and the Carolina melt, sides of mac & cheese, creamed spinach, and regular and sweet potato fries. I thought the meat on both sandwiches was really tasty, moist, and almost didn't even need sauce. The BBQ sauce was different - it almost looked like syrup but with a smokey flavor, though it was quite sweet. Our one year old loved it, and I actually found that I liked it on the sandwich. The mac and cheese was okay - would have been better if it came out hotter, and it's not your regular mac and cheese, it has seasonings in it and the cheese was a little different. I wasn't personally a fan of the creamed spinach, I prefer the creamed spinach at Bob's BBQ in Shrub Oak to this, but my husband liked it enough. Price-wise, the food is a little higher but you get a TON, so it really is like getting two meals. The sandwiches with the two sides and corn bread were around $13 each, and considering the meat was overflowing and the fries were heaped, I think it was worth it. The beer is pricey, but it's all craft beer on tap. I love that you can get a growler, definitely a perk that I intend to take advantage of. Whenever I visit my buddies up this way we usually stop in for a bite. The BBQ is well above average for the area and the beer list is great as well. It's a good place to go when you just feel like feasting. My favorite is the pulled pork plate, the sauce is so sweet and juicy it's some of the best pulled pork i've ever tasted. So, first of all, this isn't texas BBQ. Not close. Not even the same sport, let alone the same ballpark. With that being said, it was alright. The pulled pork was good. I really enjoyed it. The BBQ Sauce isn't bad either. The brisket on the other hand. If you're a "texas bbq" place, you better have damn good brisket. They didn't. Was dry, super super lean, no bark, no fat. I tried out Holy Smoke for Father's Day dinner with my boyfriends family last night and we had a great time. We made a reservation to be seated outside but it started pouring shortly after we were seated. Despite being very crowded for the holiday, the staff was able to squeeze us into a table inside within a few minutes, which turns out we would have preferred anyway as the outdoor tables were really too cramped for a party of 4. The restaurant has a super casual small town bbq joint feel with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and an extensive menu of bbq and american comfort food type options. The food took awhile to come out and service wasn't great, but the food was pretty good and were enormous sized portions given the price. The rack of ribs particularly was gigantic. A full meal of 4 totaled to just $75 and we all had plenty of lunch leftovers for the next day. Would definitely go back but they could benefit from updating the outdoor area a bit; add some nicer seating, an overhang or umbrellas, etc. read more

Went here to pick up a catering order. Walked in to a pretty empty place with maybe 3 tables occupied and 4 or 5 people in the bar area. I arrived a little earlier than the order was originally placed for, and was informed in no uncertain terms that they would not start on the order early. Not at all accommodating, did not offer a beverage while we waited for the Dom Susan to ask the kitchen to start on the order. Hubby and I came here for dinner last night after doing a Yelp search for BBQ restaurants in the area. We were seated right away and it smelled amazing inside. They had the specials on the chalkboard behind us and the soup of the day was chorizo corn chowder (delicious!). The beer menu was extensive (you can get a flight of 4, 5 ounce beers) which is what my hubby did so he could try a few at once. If you're more of a bourbon person, they had a whole page just of those! Since I'm not a beer person I chose the Angry Orchard cider. The food was delicious and HUGE portions. We each got the combo platter (he got brisket and baby backs and I had the 1/2 chicken and pulled pork). In hindsight we could have easily shared the combo platter and STILL had leftovers. The mac and cheese is amaze-balls and the coleslaw was good too. The corn muffins had little kernels of corn so every so often you got the nice, sweet pop of a kernel. Somehow hubby still had room for dessert and ordered the fried vanilla ice cream. It was rolled in cinnamon and FROSTED FLAKES and drizzled with honey and covered in whipped cream. Another table had what looked to be make your own s'mores. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive as well :) Somehow I left my wallet at the restaurant and they were awesome and must have used my address to track down my phone number to call me to let me know. Six of us headed here at 4:30 last night (no. We're not blue haired seniors. Just needed to eat early.) and had no trouble getting a table. We had to get our own menus and ask twice for silverware and extra plates. This joint was pretty townie and featured an extensive menu of anything BBQ and anything that had the word "beer" in it. When my niece is in town, she frequents this place, just for the beer. For appetizers, we had the coconut Creole dredged shrimp, which had 6 shrimp and a little-too-sweet piña colada dipping sauce. We also shared the Loaded Nachos (a special), but the topping-to-nacho ratio was WAY off. I think I counted maybe 15 nachos. The toppings were interesting and plentiful: brisket, a few strips of pork, sour cream, olives, chili, jalapeños, chicken, white cheddar and a yellow Cheez-Whiz type cheese, the latter of which was no value-add. Our entrées consisted of brisket with garlic mashed potatoes, a few helpings of St. Louis ribs with fries, ribs and chorizo combo, "dino" beef ribs (two ribs weighing in at 2 lbs, 1.5 lbs of which was probably fat), and for me, a BBQ chicken sandwich and fries. I also ordered an egg cream (not so good, esp for $3.95). The mashed potatoes were cold, so they had to be sent back. Five orders came fairly quickly, and after 5 minutes, we were wondering what happened to the beef ribs. Seems that the chef on call when we placed our order was no longer the chef (his shift ended), so that order was never cooked. Yeah. Mr K got his meal about 10 minutes after everyone else did. My meal? Up there with one of the worst I've ever had. The pulled chicken was REALLY dry, the sweet sauce wasn't working, the roll was soggy and big. I picked at the chicken and then said never mind. Good thing I had partaken of some of the nachos. Really weird: When it was about 5 pm, the help went around to each of 10 windows and placed a thick panel into each. We couldn't imagine what they were doing. Maybe to block the sun? Nah. Wasn't sunny and it was late. To keep everyone roasty, toasty? Nah. Was warm enough. Turns out there's entertainment at night, so they needed to block the sound. Must be a local ordinance and surrounding homes must have complained about the noise. Would I come here again? Only if everyone else wanted to. And I'd order a salad. Minus 1 star from me, but 3 from others, so I'll give it a 2. read more

By far the worst BBQ I've ever had. The place smells better than the food that they prepare! Portions are huge but so is the price. Nothing special about the menu. BBQ sauces offered are terrible. At least, there is a good beer selection and my girls liked their mac & cheese, but that's about it. I have seen reviews that brag about this spot, but I'm thinking they have not visited Northern Smoke yet (close by Croton Falls train station) now that's great BBQ!! When I go to a BBQ restuarant, I always have the dillemma of not knowing what to order. Tack onto that the fact that, while I would usually go with a combo platter, I wasn't particularly hungry on this trip, and was limiting myself to one meat, and imagine my inner struggles. That was the preview to this meal. Let's go chronologically: The beer selection here is out of this world. Probably over 20 taps, and not a single one that didn't perk my interest. Normally, I have to go with one and done, but Holy Smoke offers flights, so that's a HUGE plus. Onto the meal: Because of my issue detailed above, I went with the old staple of a pulled pork sandwhich. Another member of my party got the pulled pork platter, and I'm not kidding when I say that we probably got an equal amount of pork. I had to forgo the roll entirely to even make a significant dent in the meat, but it was delicious. They were out of many of the sides on the menu, but featured Mac and Cheese, which WASN'T on the menu, so I got that and a side salad. The salad was really nothing particularly of note, but the mac and cheese was awesome. Other meals at the table included pulled chicken (very good) with creamed spinach (a highlight for me), and a two meat platter with brisket (which i didn't try but looked quite good though not the best brisket i've ever eaten with my eyes) and ribs (which were tender and amazing, and if I go back will be the meal I order). They also have churrizo on the menu, which gains extra points despite the fact I did not get it. One day....one day..... A nice atmosphere and good enough service rounded out a great meal that, all in all, I would definitely definitely revisit next time I'm in the area. read more

We were really looking forward to trying something new and heard good things about this place. The only good thing about this place was the beer. The choices were plentiful and the beer was delicious. Other than that it was mediocre at the best. We love BBQ food so I guess we have high expectations, but this was just tasteless. The brisket looked good but was extremely bland. The portions were huge, but we didn't even eat half. The only thing on the plate worth talking about were the garlic smashed potatoes. The service started out well, but once the waitress got a few tables she seemed t disappear never returning to even ask how the food was. Put it this way....By the time we got to the parking lot we realized we forgot the leftovers on the table....and at that point it wasn't worth the 10 steps back inside to get it. This place is wildly mediocre. I've heard many good things about it. But it turned out to be a huge disappointment. I got a rack of babyback ribs, with a side of Mac and cheese and creamed spinach. The ribs were VERY tough, dry and had no flavor, and retained the underside membrane, removing of which is BBQ 101. They tasted like they were cooked in an oven at 400 for 3 hours. Just lousy. The Mac and cheese was ridiculously dry and lacking. My girlfriends pulled pork was shit too. Tasted like a bland flavorless overcooked potroast. The only redeeming quality. Service was OK I guess. We have visited here a couple of times so far while up in this region visiting our son, the first time stumbling upon it while using our GPS to help us find something interesting to try. We love bbq food so this place caught our eye. While from the exterior this establishment may not look like much, inside it is a restaurant with character and charm in decor. When you first walk into this place it just looks like it needs a good cleaning. The table was sticky, the flatware was dirty and the condiment jars on the table were disgusting. I almost walked out until I saw the food on the table next to me. I convinced myself to stay with my party and order. Glad I did- the food was delicious. You must come hungry, appetizers are the size of entrees and the sandwiches are huge!! The waitress was so friendly and sweet. If this review was based solely on the food it would have gotten 5 stars but they really need to dust and clean the ketchup and BBQ sauce jars on tables. it's a real turn off. read more

Not too many BBQ places close to this one, and after living down south for many years, I've sort of turned into a BBQ expert. The portions were large and the sauces were pretty solid. Ok ! This was AWFUL! I had to give it a star in order to rate it !! Our kid had Mac & cheese loaded with pulled pork ! Loaded means within not drenched on top! Yes they put a lot on it but He says the pulled pork is ok! The spices on top were salty and didn't work well together because the meat was so dry! As for the 4 meat sampler ...YUK! chicken was over cooked/dry! Texas Brisket ...DRY ! The ribs were tasteless cooked fall off bone good but the BBQ sauce ??? Awful! Omg what was that! And they say they make their own sauce? Why would u tell anyone that? One tasted as if it's soy sauce and just as thin the other could have been maple syrup, plain!! Geez what an experience! In my tip earlier was, obviously only sarcasm, but I thought it would be fun to cook ur own meat at the table but the size of the grill was to make one nugget at a time!!! they had garlic smashed potatoes! O man never did I think someone would put whole garlic cloves and smash them into potatoes! If so that's not for us! The Mac & cheese is dry and made from asiago cheese! Stepping through the door of Holy Smoke is like entering another world. Your nose takes command of all senses as the aroma of Smoked BBQ fare dominates your being. Once seated, every thought and desire beckons for the menu... "What do they have, have much can I get". The mind glazes over and price is of little concern. GIVE ME BBQ, is all that matters. And satisfying it is, they have what you want, have what you need. Chicken, ribs, steak... Even chorizo if you're making a left turn. It's all good, kids, you won't be disappointed. We were served drinks first, with a wonderful selection of beers, I picked a nice German Wheat beer that was simply delish. This is a beer place folks, if you want wine... Bring it ! But where's our food ?! Panic mounts as our anticipation becomes overwhelming. Then, we are presented with our dinners... My life is complete, my baby back ribs are spectacular and shared with my dinner companions ( half the fun is to see their reaction). Their steak and chicken dinners were devoured like hungry wolves. Holy Smoke is changing in some respects, not the fare which is always very good and consistent. There are more tables in the restaurant and feels busier. The last time I was there only a few other people were being served by the one wait- person. This time, it was well staffed and busy , a good thing to see people enjoying dinner with happy sounds coming from every table. Went here twice and I have to say that I don't understand why their packed on the weekends. Food is kinda sub par and expensive.

Wife and I dined here a few times and each time, the service was outstanding and the atmosphere was casual and pleasant. Last time out, I ordered a mixed dish (don't recall the name of it) consisting of ribs, sausage, and chicken along with a few sides. My wife had the pulled pork which, by the way, is really outstanding! The servers brought out 2 trays just for my order (one for the entrée and one for the sides). The barbecue here is really tasty and well worth the trip. I, naturally, wound up bringing most of it home. There's a wide variety of drink choices and the meals are not really expensive. When in the area, stop in and give it a try. This is probably our favorite place for good, old-fashioned barbecue. read more

This place was such a disappointment. The service was terrible. The owner who looked like he was cooking the food to was walking around in his oajamas. The bus boys were goofing around belching loudly next to our tables and laughing about it. They were setting up for a party the next afternoon and we were there at seven o'clock at night. The place wasn't too busy but you shouldn't be dragging tables and scrapping them across the floor when your payong customers are trying to have a peaceful meal. One of the boys dropped a steak knife on the floor and just left it there for five minutes so I picked ut up. The ribs were dry and chewy. The side dishes were brought out cold and brought microwaved after we requested new ones. The only reason this joke of an establishment is getting any stars is because the beer was good. No resies for parties under 6, but there was only a 5 minute wait. Arrived as we said to...SLAM!! Put our names in, told her we'd called... But 3 parties arrived before us, so waited 35 minutes with a starving 10 year old... I mean, I get that you're a small restaurant so first come first served... But if someone takes the time to call ahead...?! The door girls were extremely sweet and apologetic, but might be time to revisit that policy. I'm from the South, born and raised, new orleans...My parents live in South Carolina. Soooo... I can put up with A LOT!! For good BBQ... I probably would not be complaining right now... But MEH. Ribs ok... I get that BBQ meat is pink, but these were undercooked. Add in gelatinous gravy, French fries out of an ore-Ida bag, baked beans so sweet they tasted more like apple pie and fried chicken with the smallest wing and drummie I have EVER seen... did they kill a chick?... And burnt hockey pucks trying to pass as cornbread. The spicy BBQ sauce and creamed spinach were good, but not good enough to make up. Service was nice enough and efficient... NEVER saw a bus boy though, so we sat glumly with our pile o bones waiting for the check. Finally, the place is an emergency responders job waiting to happen. Small double doors leading in, one side locked so you could barely get in or out even with polite peeps holding the door...with a step immediately underfoot, waiting to trip the unwary...mentioned it to the mgr... Again very nice and thank you for pointing out... But locked they remained. The road to hell is paved with the best of intentions... Sigh Still.
