I've had most of the proteins but usually enjoy the brisket. Was going chicken last time but they were out and quoted 30 minutes before replenish. No thanks brisket it is. The tacos appear small in the foil wrap but are loaded with meat and plenty of guacamole. The brisket meat is served cold which is weird. They serve queso, but it's mild and not my favorite. Spice it up with one of two good salsas red or green. Last time the queso was steaming hot and that was a Win. Last thing in this review was an $18 frozen margaritas which was comical. Decent flavor but small for the price. That is a never again for me, but sure I will be back occasionally for fresh flour tortilla tacos. There is a bar you can sit at inside or many tables out front. It tends to get very windy in this spot. I never knew there was a Homestate near by, I took my family there after I went to a couple of yelp events where Homestate was featured and loved their tacos, but I have never tried their hibiscus limeade. This was refreshing and amazing. My tijuana pather (brisket taco) fell apart but it was so good. Honestly, I've had several of their tacos and forth worth is my favorite (not pictured). The potato taco was also decent. These tacos are messy because it is filled. You will leave full after 2 tacos. The service was also great. They accidently left the bacon in the forth worth and fixed it right away. Even offered 2 cookies because it was busy and had to wait. That's great customer service. I will be making this location a favorite for tex mex tacos. Also parking is better after 6, it's only 30 mins prior right in front. This is downtown culver city so there's several lots and I'm not entirely sure about parking in the neighborhood, so just check signs. read more

I had the Guadalupe tacos today and they were bad. The chorizo is usually mixed into the eggs (unless they recently changed it), but my tacos look like they were just thrown together with leftovers from other orders. It gives "sloppy" and "we don't care." I always tip too, so it's especially frustrating when the quality and service aren't there. My last visits to the Culver City location has been disappointing lately, from the food to the customer service. I'll be sticking to the Santa Monica location because it's honestly so much better. read more

I was craving some breakfast tacos and queso after being away from Texas for a handful of years. We tried out Homestate, which was recommended by a friend who also left Texas. I had the Trinity and Pecos tacos. The Trinity was a classic and was a good mix of the potato, bacon, cheese and eggs. I knew we couldn't go wrong with it. The Pecos taco was dripping in grease and was really hard to eat because it was so wet/greasy. The flavor was okay but I wish it also had potatoes to help break up the wetness. On the side, we had queso and chips and also a side of the crispy potatoes. Both the chips and potatoes paired well with queso. The service was really fast and we got our food quickly, which we appreciated, and we sat outside on a cloudy day so it was nice weather. Our order didn't come with any napkins so we had to return to ask for some since they didn't leave any out to grab. It didn't feel too busy on a Thursday morning. read more

Outrageously poor service and zero accountability. My office placed a large to-go order yesterday for me to pick up at 8:30 AM today. I arrived a few minutes early at 8:15 AM and asked the staff member if the order was ready. Without even checking the order queue or the system, she bluntly told me she didn't have an order for me. When I was understandably shocked, she completely brushed me off and asked if I "needed anything else"--ignoring the fact that I was standing there waiting for a massive order my office had already paid for.I had to contact my office, who then called the restaurant back with the receipt. Only after that intervention did the staff member bother to look, revealing the order was actually in the back being prepared.The salesperson couldn't be bothered to do the bare minimum and check the queue when I first asked. Worse, there was absolutely no apology for the attitude, the dismissiveness, or the mistake. Completely unprofessional staff and terrible customer service. We will never be ordering from here again. I went to Home State during my work lunch hour, and it wasn't too crowded which was a plus. The woman who took my order was very friendly, and I was tempted to try their frozen margarita, but I've heard they are very strong, so I need to come back on a non-work day. I ordered the Guadalupe breakfast taco that has eggs and chorizo, the Vaquero taco which had brisket and pickled jalapeños, and my third taco was the chicken taco. I asked for corn tortillas for each of my tacos because I was curious to see the quality of the tortilla. They were not handmade, fyi. All three tacos came out on the colder side. The brisket in the vaquero was surprisingly dryer than I would have liked, and the egg and chorizo in the Guadalupe was pretty flavorless and the colder temperature made the texture of the egg and chorizo mixture a bit gross. I was not happy with the quality of the food considering it is on the pricier side. The names of the tacos are fun, but I'm afraid that when I go back, I will only be trying the frozen margaritas because the tacos need to at least be a bit warmer. read more

Service was great, the elevated outdoor patio was reasonably comfortable if a bit sunny on a warm fall day, the vibes inside were not bad; the inside seating by the window was about it, the patio clearly is where everyone eats. Food came out fairly quickly, however I'm not sure on breakfast tacos. They're a great way to get more variety than a single (larger) breakfast burrito, but none of the three tacos I had left much of an impression. Guadalupe was a bit of a mess as soon as unrolled from the foil, although perhaps the most tasty one (cheddar, eggs, chorizo). Pecos (brisket and eggs) held together in taco form better and was close in taste, while Trinity (eggs, bacon, potato, cheddar) was maybe the most disappointing to me. Perhaps if I had eaten them in reverse order, maybe Trinity would have been hotter in temperature and more appealing? Not sure to be honest. read more

Really solid slice of Tex Mex food in a place where the tacos typically don't have cheese! The playlist of old soul and rock and roll was absolutely bumping when we walked in and I really appreciated the conviviality (is that a word?) of the cashier. The food came out relatively quickly and I think my dining partner and I were both pretty impressed with the different offings of the menu. We ordered queso and chips and had wayyyyy too much queso going on still after the chips were devoured, so the staff gave us an extra bag of chips to-go, ensuring that our gas would be deadly and our stomachs full. So many good reviews of HomeState, not only for breakfast but for the food in general. Had to try and see if the hype was accurate or just another LA trend... 1030am on a Sunday and no line so a great start. We had lots of questions for the person at the counter and he was super friendly and helpful. Pecos/Don't Mess with Texas tacos for me and Classic Miga for the wife. Sat outside and the wait was less than five minutes. I was hesitant at first when I saw how small the tacos looked and figured I would have to order a few more to fill me up. Both tacos were solid and surprisingly very filling. Then I added the two salsas that were brought out and those solid tacos became outstanding tacos. Just the right amount of heat and perfect for everything we ate. The Miga had a great amount of onions mixed in to add some flavor and texture to the eggs (and yes a lot of salsa too). The prices were spot on and we were told that we have to try to come back for lunch as we didn't hit the queso which is also supposed to be really good. If there is anything negative to say it's that there are only a few street parking spots out front (30 minute parking) so you may need to hit the local streets to find something and watch out for the permit only signs. But it's always funny to watch LA drivers TRY to parallel park while having breakfast. We'll be back soon for Queso and more! read more

You know you love a place when you start craving its food. That's what happened with me and HomeState. Friends introduced me to their tacos a few years ago, and after that, I was hooked. I've had their breakfast tacos and so many of their anytime tacos. My personal favorite is the brisket taco, and the picadillo. I've also enjoyed the Trinity taco. First timer here and was pretty disappointed. I ordered the potato taco, brisket quesadilla and a side of potatoes with their ranch. The potato taco was probably one of the worst tacos I've ever had. It was small, lacked flavor and COLD. They should really consider serving at least the potatoes that go inside of it heated. And speaking of potatoes, my side of them were way too salty and the ranch was good but it was an extra $2 which is just insane. The brisket quesadilla was my favorite but I felt like I was eating a kids quesadilla with it only including the meat and cheese so would've been nice to have the option to add onions or peppers to make it feel more full. They changed the menu a little like the frito pie in a bag used to come with brisket and you can ask for it still but the brisket so kinda weird and dry ish? Like it used to be saucy as in a chile type brisket. I will try the ground beef and hope that's saucier. The didn't put any of the cheese sauce in it not sure if it's a new thing, I added it from my queso dip instead. And overall it just seemed bland. I attend a family gathering, they served food from HomeState that was so delicious, I just had to write about it. A pre-order for 2 dozen tacos, tortilla chips and toppings was served. The tortillas were handmade and filled with a variety of protein, cheese and beans. Each was individually wrapped in foil and clearly labeled for your convenience. The food has a "Texas" flair to it, featuring brisket, pinto or black beans, diced potatoes, pickled red onions, Pico de Gallo, and vegetarian options too. I chose the "Don't Mess with Texas" soft taco. It was filed with Charro beans, bacon, potatoes and cheddar cheese. You can also buy a dozen flour tortillas as a side and save them for the next day! So worth the price ($8 a dozen). They are open 7 days a week, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Try them and you will want to go back for more. I had a pleasant time here at HomeState! They are known for their tacos; they are wrapped in foil so they look like mini burritos but they are in fact tacos! We ordered the chicken, brisket and Jiuana panther and they were juicy and delicious. They served it with green and red sauce which added an extra kick of flavor.   We also ordered a side of potatoes and the lil queso which tasted delicious! I definitely recommend getting this because it was one of my favorites of the meal!   We shared a hibiscus limeade and it was crisp and refreshing with free refills.   They provide outdoor seating with umbrellas which was on a first come first serve basis. The servers were friendly and brought our food to us.   This is a great spot for a casual lunch hangout! It is located at One Culver so you have the option of working remotely or casually hanging out in the area. Its a little pricy for tacos but the quality was worth it! read more

Home State is the newest and latest offering Tex Mex style tacos. The shop is located on Washington Bl in Culver City and they now occupy the space formerly held by Konbi which closed last January. For reference, this taco shop is next to GoGetEmTiger coffee shop. The menu offers both breakfast and lunch options, lots of breakfast tacos with eggs but I was not inclined to order eggs since it was a late lunch for Me. Was excited to try tacos with a Tex Mex twist and order the signature: Tijuana Panther and the Chicano Batman. Chicano Batman is one of the vegan option made with soydillo and potatoes plus other veggie ingredients. Tijuana Panther has shredded beef brisket and topped with raw cabbage slivers and other ingredients. Each wrapped like a small burrito, I chose the house made flour tortilla which was covered in foil. Additionally, also ordered a side of chips and salsa which is how I like to eat soft shell tacos. The staff from the order taker/cashier to the servers were super nice, helpful and quick to clear and wiper down tables after diners left. After paying cashless, you're given a number, go outdoors as there are No Indoor seatings. Umbrella shade Outdoor patio seating only. Server brought out my order with the red and green salsas. I unwrapped each taco and took pics to post. Everything looked good, but that's it because out of the 3 items I ordered, only the z Tijuana Panther shredded beef taco was good not great, because the meat lacked flavor, it could use marinate, seasoning and maybe more spices so even after adding the salsa, the taste improved from a 2 to a 3 star. The Chicano Batman taco seem to taste similar to a vegan chili with small chunks of fried potatoes smothered in thick sauce was bland and very messy...I had to scoop the contents which dripped with the tortilla chips. Possible the biggest disappointment were the tortilla chips which tasted semi stale, not fresh, no crunch and lacked any flavor no even slightly salted. I probably only ate 4 chips and just couldn't eat the rest. Of the the food I ordered only 1 out of 3 was just ok...earns 1 star. It was sunny but cool mid 70's, and the outdoor seating with the yellow umbrellas and music added an appeal to the vibe. Most diners were nerdy looking guys probably techies, dressed casual and appear to work nearby all in all it was a good positive energy. And because of that positive energy, great service and clean dining areas, I am generously award a barely 2.3 stars. After eating these Tex Mex style taco, I've come to the conclusion that I much prefer CaliMex which are California and Mexican style tacos which are probably more flavorful and includes more veggies, herbs and spices. Sadly, the menu does not offer anything seafood. I usually order Baja style fish taco or a Tostada crunchy shell salad loaded with greens. I have relatives throughout Texas and they eat plenty of seafood: chargrilled fish tacos, and grilled veggies. And I'm sure there are lots places that offer TexMex style tacos that are fantastic, but I was not a fan of the food here at Home Base. If your standards are not that picky on tacos and like them tasting bland, then maybe these are for you. Or try other tacos on the menu that might tastes great and perhaps you can rave about it. You'll never know unless you try the TexMex style tacos at Home State with multiple locations in SoCal and zero locations in the Don't Mess with Texas state. read more
