We met friends here on a Wednesday Night for dinner. The place is popular and they serve up great customer service and good vibes. The style is very cool and trendy, and nice for downtown spots. We found parking in a lot behind the venue, it cost about 1.05 for 1hr 15min of parking, pretty reasonable. We were able to get a patio seat with no problem. Pretty good tacos, with decent sized portions. Went for lunch a grabbed two tacos - the trinity (breakfast taco) and Tijuana panther (brisket). Both were pretty good and filling. The meat was tender and none of the fillings were dry. The tacos are about 1.5x bigger than a street taco. They put a good amount of meat / potatoes in there as well, so I was content with 2 tacos. There's street and paid lots parking to get here. There's a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating. The noise level is decent even with the music playing. The line really quick and the food arrives fairly quick as well. The staff are nice and helpful. It's a good place for families, with dogs, or a friend hangout. They have a restroom which requires a code number. I got the Guadalupe and Trinity burrito. These are a good size that you can easily consume one. Two might be worthwhile amd they're all wrapped up so you can take them to-go. The burritos were good and savory! You can also have some green and red sauce from the bottle. The sauces were okay. Alright this spot is serving up breakfast and dinner tacos that you can order all day and they're both great. I just woke up and hiked up some big hill to a turtle pond, so I went with breakfast tacos. At the top of the list is the "Trinity" its eggs, potatoes, bacon and cheese. Excellent, the potatoes and bacon are fried and crispy and the eggs are scrambled big fluffy style if you know what I'm sayin Also had a "Guadalupe" which is a pate egg blend with chorizo and cheese. Incredible. I slathered it in the verde sauce that they brought to the table, highly recommended! To drink I had a frozen Paloma, which tastes like a tamarind jarritos with tequila and grapefruit. Delicious. Service was great, everyone was polite, cheerful, and helpful in the dining process. We sat at a table under some lights but there's plenty of seats at the bar as well! The tacos from homestate are great at both locations! This particular location has plenty of seating, though it is first-come/first-served. When seated on the patio area, you would not know that you were right off of the main street. The bathroom situation is a little weird, you have to go into this poorly marked back area. However, the bathrooms themselves were fine and staff were happy to help when I was not able to locate them initially. read more

We went to Highland Park to meet some friends for dinner on Saturday night and ended up giving HomeState a try! I'm not going to lie here, this is a trendy looking taco shop in a trendy neighborhood so you kind of know what you get when you mix those things together. You basically get in line outside, order at the front counter, and then find a seat and go from there. The place was pretty packed when we arrived by got lucky enough to snag a back table with room for our dog as well (she wasn't eating, just chilling out). The menu here had a good amount of taco options as well as some other stuff, but I kept it simple and ordered three tacos. I went with the Potato Taco, the Ground Beef Taco, and the Brisket to round it off. The Brisket taco was solid, the Ground Beef taco was very, very good, and the Potato Taco was the winner of the taco contest by far. I absolutely devoured all three tacos in a matter of minutes and I truly have no complaints. Overall, HomeState Taco might not be the first place I think of if I want tacos, but it's definitely a solid spot in Highland Park and a good place to grab a bite to eat before a show at the Lodge Room. I did a take out, I'm supirsed they don't give chips. I tried both their chicken and brisket tacos and boy are they heavy. I felt kind of sick after eating them. I'm not sure if they just have a lot more grease or what but they tasted super fatty/heavy and it was tough on my stomach. I guess I more used to mexican food vs tex-mex nowadays. It's a great go-to place for some tacos and drinks! It's a order-before-sitting kinda place. They have a good list of breakfast tacos and "anytime tacos" so there's something for everyone. I usually get the potato and chicken tacos but my parter liked the Tijuana Panther one best (brisket). They also provide bottles of both red and green salsas and I shamelessly use so much! They're both pretty good but I typically lean towards the green one. Their alcohol selection is small but it doesn't disappoint! You can get margarita and spicy paloma slushies or on the rocks! The line fluctuates quite a bit in length but it's usually quick. Grab a seat and they'll bring the food over. If you order a drink don't stray too far from the front counter since they'll set the drink out there and not bring it w the food usually. I do admit it can get a little pricey so I come once in a while. They're also known for their queso so definitely give them a try if you're not too lactose intolerant They have a small cheap parking lot behind them but you can also look for street parking especially in residential areas. read more

Stopped in for some chips and dip and things were just ok! You order up at the counter and there was plenty of seating inside and outside (with heaters since it is winter). We came an hour before closing, and a lot of the tables were very dirty. The queso con carne was very good, but the chips that came on the side were clearly from the bottle of the bag. A lot of the chips were crushed and very salty, and the paper tray was not full. The marg on the rocks was very strong though, so that was great!!! read more

They move the line and you can take your tacos to go, grab a seat at the counter, at a table inside, or out on the patio and no one is taking 2 hours to eat some tacos so the tables turnover quite quickly. We sat at the counter becaus there was no room out on the patio and I got to observe how hard the employees work to keep things flowing and moving. There was a DJ out in the patio and I appreciated that the music wasn't too loud and people were still able to enjoy their conversation and the music. I like getting the Tijuana Panther taco and the Frito Pie in a Bag. I always order a side of the pickled jalapeños or pickled onions for whatever I order. They bring texture and brightness to every bite. My favorite alcoholic beverage is the Frozen Spicy Paloma and for non-alcoholic I really enjoy the Cooldown. Oof I hate to post this because I've been a fan of HomeState since their first location opened up well over a decade ago. But alas, I think I'm done giving them chances. I met some coworkers at the Sherman Oaks location a few weeks ago (my recommendation), and granted it was the lunch rush. But all the food came out cold and stale. I was embarrassed I recommended it. Then I came to this highland park location at 8:30 am. Surely the food would be fresh just 30 minutes after opening... nope! i got two tacos that I had to apologetically send back because not only were they room temperature but the potatoes tasted like they were made the previous day. I should have known when it only took about 2 minutes to get my food that it was not freshly made. The employees were somewhat accommodating if not awkwardly so. As if I had insulted them by nicely asking to warm my food. Look I'm not the kind of person who sends food back. But you can't eat a cold, stale breakfast taco. A few moments later they brought me two new tacos that were maybe 10° warmer. I choked them down and left. I won't be returning. Someone please fix this company. You have to make fresh food! If any ingredients were made more than 30 minutes ago, don't serve them. read more

I feel obligated to update my review, as a longtime fan of Homestate (and always will be) there are certain things that will never change about this place: the gorgeous patio, the wonderful staff, the charming walkable neighborhood. These are all still 5 star. However, it pains me to say that the food has slipped. On more than one occasion, I've ordered lunch and the tacos were lukewarm or even cold. This is not a take out order, this is for dining in. So clearly these tacos were not made fresh to order. Someone told me the hack is to customize it in some way so they have to make a fresh one. But that shouldn't be the case - I love their menu items and dont wanna have to add or subtract every time to make sure I get food that's fresh. Oh Homestate! At $5-7 a taco, I was hoping the flavors would blow my mind. I was sorely disappointed. The hibiscus drink was both too bitter and too sour at the same time. Not enjoyable at all. I have been to a few other home state locations and this one clearly knocks it out of the park with ambience. I love their outdoor seating, filled with plants and laughter.. The service is always exceptional as well. Everyone is always extremely nice and accommodating. There was a line out the door to order food and I was ready for a second Paloma, where the second register employee that does to go orders let me slip in a drink order there not having to wait in the line. I will say the potato tacos are a hit or a mess.
