This is a great casual spot that has great food, delicious drinks, and plenty of seating. It's the perfect spot to go to with large groups since there's something for everyone, including vegan and GF options, and they have an awesome patio with lots of seating. Service here was extremely attentive and friendly the two times I came, with staff regularly clearing tables, grabbing any extras you might need. The food was delicious, the brisket was a hit along with the queso, and this is coming from someone who usually doesn't care for either. The tacos may be a little pricey but size wise they're more like mini burritos. My only possible complaint is that the salsas really are not spicy and could use some stronger flavor. read more

Experience: This is a restaurant where you order at the register and take your number to any of the open tables indoors and outdoors, or along the bar with a view of the kitchen! The mixture of Mexican and country music totally goes with the HomeState vibe. The decor was intentionally chosen, from the raised wallpaper to the colored glassware and paintings all over, there are so many small details to notice. A little noisy, but still a nice ambiance with music and friendly people. Service: It was opening day, so there were A LOT of people working. But everyone (including the owner Briana!) stopped in to make sure everything was good and that we had a good experience. The nicest people. Never had to get up to ask for anything. Food: We had breakfast tacos (trinity and Don't mess with Texas) and anytime tacos (chicken and brisket) and YUM! Their flour tortillas are award winning and DO NOT pass on these! Impeccable service. Friendly staff. Amazing flour tortillas! I was excited to try Homestate, purposely trying to go at an off time to avoid the lines. We arrived around 12:30 and got in a rather short line with 4-5 groups ahead of us. This is a quick service restaurant so you order from the front counter and then find a seat on your own. The decor is kitschy with artwork based on their various taco flavors created by celebrities. Many of the taco flavors reflected in the artwork are not on the menu. The bar is wooden stools and wood paneling, and a wooden bar top with purse hooks (awesome). The other tables are also wooden bench, styles and picnic tables. All added to the kitschy understated vibe. We were able to quickly find a seat at the bar and our shiner bock beers came in no time. We ordered the loaded migas, the "don't mess with Texas" and the "Blanco" tacos. As well as the lil' queso with chips. I first tried the queso because that's what I was the most excited about. Having spent five years in Texas. I am familiar with Tex-Mex and was very excited to finally get some real queso. The queso was warm and creamy and light orange, filled with spices and what looks like pico de gallo. It was good, but a little on the bland. I think it could use a little more spice. The chips were excellent, crunchy and salty and perfect. Next was the Blanco, which had egg whites, Monterey Jack cheese and shiitake mushrooms. It was excellent, the egg whites were seasoned very well. The flour tortilla was also on the Salty side. Our meal came with two bottles of salsa. One red and one green. The green was the spicier of the two and my favorite. They both tasted very fresh and the red tasted more smoky. I especially enjoyed the salsa verde with the Blanco. They don't mess with Texas was a flour tortilla with refried Charro beans, cheddar cheese, bacon, and brisket and it was also very good. Less on the Salty side. It was really good with the red salsa. We shared the loaded migas which I believe is called the Lonestar. It was definitely my favorite of all of the things that we ordered. You just can't find migas here in California and it was a wonderful surprise. The brisket on top was so well done, and it was loaded with really fresh pico de gallo, cheddar cheese, corn, tortilla, and fresh fluffy eggs. I don't think I've tasted better migas in my life! We went so far as to dump our queso on top of the migas and that took it to a whole new level of perfection! Homestate should really think about just offering this as a menu option. We were really impressed with Homestate from the initial level of service through service at the end of the meal when we decided to order a chocolate chip cookie and a dozen tortillas to go. Throughout our dining experience, we were asked if we needed anything and were given the same level of attention. There's a lot more tacos to try so I know we will definitely be back. Our experience today definitely gained five stars. I hope they can keep that up. One thing we did notice was there was a lot of staff working and at times it seemed like they were bumping into each other and getting in each other's way. Unbelievable this place opened within walking distance to my house! It's so beautiful inside and I was so excited but blown away when I tried it. I grew up in Austin so these very much remind me of home. So much flavor in these tacos packed with quality ingredients. Extra plus are the homemade flour tortillas-I haven't tried the corn yet but will soon. Favorites so far are the Trinity, Brazos, Tijuana Panther, the Queso, and their Chocolate Chip cookies!! I highly recommend ordering online if you come around lunch because it gets busy and the line moved a little slow (they have umbrellas for waiting). We visited less than two weeks after they opened and will likely return. We dined around 5 PM on a Thursday, and they had lots of staff on hand, and some were training. There was one party in front of us and they did a nice job of answering questions. We placed our order at the counter, were given a number, and were told that if we wanted to order anything else, we could do so with staff at the table. When we needed a refill, there was no staff walking around, so we had to get up and go to the counter. The line was minimal, and this wasn't a big deal, but it might be nice if there was a way to indicate to staff that you needed something. I ordered a breakfast taco (Don't Mess with Texas), a brisket taco, and we shared the loaded queso along with an iced tea (I would have liked a fountain diet coke but they don't offer fountain drinks). I was surprised that the breakfast taconwas my favorite. The beans were tasty, the homemade flour tortilla is a star, and the salsa/hotsauces they served on the side were addictive. The brisket taco was solid with shredded brisket. The queso was a tad salty, but I do like that the chips served alongside have free refils. I don't remember what I ordered but I remember wishing that the salsa had more flavor to make up for the bland tacos. Despite this I went back today to give it another try. Visited this place to try their breakfast tacos. Boyfriend has been craving breakfast tacos for a while. It was very busy on a Saturday morning, but service was very quick! We took a seat at the bar and it was fun watching the assembly line in the kitchen. It was so efficient. Love that they provided each tray with full sized bottles of sauce. We come here EVERY weekend! We absolutely love the breakfast vibes and tacos are delicious! I usually get three trinity tacos and they are yummy with the green salsa! My husband gets the brazos and frio tacos and he is a repeat customer! We also love the iced cookie milk coffee. It's a special little concoction that is a good compliment to your tacos! Tried this place for the first time this afternoon. First let me say, I usually shy away from anything labeled as "Tex-Mex" because I get images of everything being smothered in sauce and cheese. Not the case here at all. This hit a perfect balance of richness and authenticity. Do not sleep on the house made tortillas - so fresh and delicious. Soft and pillowy with the perfect chew. We loved both their red and green salsas. Neither too spicy with amazing depth of flavor. That being said none of our tacos needed anything extra. We tried the brisket taco - tender flavorful beef was the star. The "Don't mess with Texas" which was my personal favorite- the beans combined with the bacon -chefs kiss- smoky, creamy... yum. The picadillo was our least favorite but only because hubby can't handle spicy- I actually enjoyed it but nothing could top the DMWT. Not to be outdone by the crispy potatoes which are my new vice. The place is nice and clean with lots of sitting space inside and outside. My husband and I decided to try a taco and some of their queso. So I had brisket taco with potatoes I think it's called the Tijuana panther and my husband had the ft.worth taco with chicken and we shared the queso with brisket. Their queso is delicious it had some guacamole, sour cream pico de gallo and of course some brisket and queso and comes with side of chips. For drinks I had the hibiscus limeade and my husband had a Coke Zero. Gilbert was very helpful and attentive with us.Being our first time here he helped us with our questions regarding the menu.
