Came here to try the tacos, but ended up eating nachos! The nachos were good, but had to order a side of queso cause they were a little dry. The beans were the highlight of the nachos- the side of queso was definitely delicious as were the chips. I would skip the brisket. I can't recommend the flour tortillas enough- wish I would have just gotten the tacos, but bought some to take home and the tortillas were phenomenal!! Also ordered the spicy Paloma, which was indeed spicy, but pretty tasty. Service was good, but it's an order at the counter get food delivered type place. Taco's were good, not great. They are very pricy for what you get. My hubby found chicken bones in this taco... plural...and so he didn't finish his lunch. Disgusting... The food was cold upon receiving and tasted like literal vomit. I don't like leaving bad reviews but this place made me feel sick after eating. The eggs were soggy and cold, and the cheese was not even melted. The beans had a horrendous acrid taste to it that resembled bile. I had to throw my food out, and left hungry. Not sure what happened because the first time I ate here I was pleasantly surprised with the food. Unfortunately my second time was terrible. I will not be eating here again. My friend and I went to eat at this place this past Tuesday on 8/2/25. I ordered two brisket tacos. I was surprised at how small they were however I ate them and they put on our table two different kinds of salsa the red salsa and the green salsa and I actually were using both of them on my taco and when I got home maybe an hour later after eating I was very very sick!! I think something in the salsas were bad and or they sat out too long but my stomach was very sick and made me vomit. Now that's food poisoning...... I called and left a message for the manager but they never called me back. Great service right, wrong. I would suggest you be careful with any of the food & salas for sure! PS. The people there were not very friendly and not very helpful that's another disappointment.. with the rise in cost of food they should be carrying about making a customer happy so they come back. Service is not existent so no review of that. Ambiance is basic, sit on a bench, at least it was a clean bench. So for two people, 4 tacos, a beer, a small margarita, $50 FIFTY DOLLARS out the door, you may also feel like the value is totally out of balance. Home State has horrible management, they have no idea what they're doing. They gave me gift cards for the South o Car night with nothing on them and now they won't recognize them and make it right. Their food is fair at best. their management terrible. Oceanside does not need another taco stand. This is historical building in Oceanside it used to be the old Red & White market. I get the hype... people have been talking about Homestate and for good reason. Our stop this morning was enjoyable on almost every level. The customer service at the front of house was great, and she helped us with our order. Even after I messed up and forgot a few things she was able to ring us back up and get us set for a tasty breakfast. The breakfast tacos are delicious, as everyone is writing about, but the tortillas! Yeeeesh, they're good! The flour were wonderful but the corn?!? Hands down the best I have ever had. I went on a corn tortilla journey earlier this year down in San Diego and whittled down to two excellent hand made corn tortilla places. I think it's safe to say that Homestate now takes that crown. The tacos were on the simple side but all the ingredients were top notch and I LOVE the way they prepare the scrambled eggs. A little on the soupy side- absolutely perfect. If I were to rate them down a bit it would be that the eggs were a bit over-salted and their salsas were a little lacking in punch. And whatever the Neches taco is...maybe pass on that one. Refried beans and scrambled eggs that just kinda turned to mush in your hands. But at any rate, the operation is efficient, the decor is fun and light, and as stated the customer service was excellent. Even though there was a line out the door (always a good sign) they got the orders up and people seated and served quickly. Didn't say a word that this order was mine. Then I thought there was could have been more cause there was only one single rolled up taco. Stopped by for breakfast on a Sunday, and there was a big line out the door! Fortunately, the line moves at a reasonable pace. The restaurant has simple, no fuss decor that creates a super casual atmosphere. The staff was very friendly when we went up to order and when they brought our food out to the table. We tried the hibiscus limeade, which was refreshing, sweet, and tangy. For food, we ordered breakfast tacos and queso with chips. We tried the Guadalupe, Don't Mess with Texas, and Pecos breakfast tacos. All the ingredients are really fresh tasting, but I think the balance of ingredients was a little off sometimes. I would have liked a little more chorizo in the Guadalupe, and a little less refried beans in the Don't Mess with Texas. The brisket in the Pecos taco was tender and juicy (kinda tasted a little like corned beef actually), but dipping it into the queso really brought the taco together since it's just eggs and brisket. The salsas on the side provided a nice fresh addition to the tacos, and we loved the chips and queso! Will have to try more of their menu! read more

I've been twice now, once for breakfast, and once for dinner. I just really wish they made their tacos fresh. I feel like if they did that this would really be a good place that I could recommend. Tacos come as if they were made on an assembly line at least a day or two ago and stuck in a fridge. You can definitely tell they're not fresh made. That being said the breakfast tacos are OK and the brisket regular taco is actually pretty good despite not being very warm and the tortilla being a little stiff. Skip the potato taco. Brought family here for lunch. Not a bad line and plenty of seating at 3:45 on a Saturday. Pros- Brisket was super tasty. Boys loved it on their tacos and Migas (eggs with tortilla strips and meat dish) and I thought it was really good on the Tijuana Panthers taco too. The hit of the meal. Best deal are the black and charro bean sides which were very tasty and we would totally get those again too. The Lonestar Migas had a ton of eggs and a generous serving of brisket that was too much for my son to finish in one sitting We took a dozen tortillas to go and will make breakfast tacos with them for the following day. Cons - Table was clear of trash but not cleaned off when we sat down. It had crumbs and we had to wipe it down with some napkins before sitting. With the lowest tip on the screen being 15% and considering you stand in line to put your order in yourself, they could've wiped off the table. The Chicano Batman taco has soyrizo and my hubby and I both thought it was too greasy. Chicken taco was just ok - hubby didn't really taste the chipotle. My Spicy Paloma on the rocks was just ok too. Didn't have much alcohol for the price. They come to take the trash off your table - to clear it - but it feels like they are rushing to get you out to free up seating as it got busier while we were eating. At rhe bottom of my receipt there was a also a section for "Suggested additional tip" - why?? I got my own water, stood in line to order and you brought out my food only (and offered to clean off some of the trash but not all.). Officially my favorite breakfast spot in North County SD! My boyfriend and I ordered 2 tacos each (Trinity X 2, Pecos, and Tijuana Panther and shared a side of Lil Queso and Chips, it was the perfect amount for us. I was really curious about what all the hype was about this place since I've had breakfast burritos plenty of times and didn't see how they'd be so different in taco form lol, but this place more than lived up to the hype. The flour tortillas are out of this world delicious and everything inside the tacos is super flavorful without being greasy or overly salty like most breakfast burrito type places I've been to. The queso is also amazing, my boyfriend isn't that into queso dip and even he loved it. Truly great Texas style tacos! Within the last year I've had tacos both breakfast and lunch/dinner in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio and these tacos at HomeState definitely measure up. Whatever tacos you get I have to recommend you try them on the HomeState Flour tortillas. I know I know there are some tacos that pair better with corn tortillas but you can tell the flour tortillas are made fresh and whatever you put in there is going to taste delicious. We ordered the guadalupe, brisket, potato, and the chicano batman. When they get delivered to your table they dont look huge. They are wrapped tightly in foil but they are packed with flavor. The chicano batman was a little messy so be ready for that. Felt like a great late night taco or hangover food. I personally LOVE breakfast tacos and they use pasture-raised eggs and serve them all day. I also love that they give you two squeeze bottles of salsa with your order. My wife and I preferred the salsa verde but honestly they were both delicious. We paired our tacos with a "lil" side of queso and the spicy paloma and a ranch water and enjoyed it all. They have a great outdoor patio that is dog friendly and the inside has a good vibe of Texas meets socal. I dont think I'll ever come through Oceanside and NOT stop at this place. read more

Had an opportunity to try quite a few items here. We had the brisket taco, Andy's migas,chips and guacamole, chocolate chip cookie and the summer lemonade. The taco had lots of meat and was very tasty. I'd love to try the potato taco next time and the crispy potatoes. The migas was also great. Not something I'd order myself but my husband had it. The chips were kinda meh. Didn't taste like they make them on-site. I could be wrong if they do but they don't taste like they are. The guacamole is amazing though. Definitely tastes fresh made. The cookie was ok. Not my cup of tea. I'd love to see more sweet options added. Speaking of my cup of tea I didn't care for the flavor. I love tea lemonade and mint but the flavor of this didn't work for me. It also didn't taste like they made it there. Maybe something from a bottle? I did ask for it with no ice because I had a tea lemonade today and don't want to be all caffeinated so late but it came with ice so it will water down when I'm ready and I'll mix it with some fresh brew, I'm sure it will be fine. The brisket's good. It's a clean and comfortable restaurant to eat at (particularly outside on the patio in the evening). The staff provide quick and welcoming service. I'll go again primarily because it's convenient to the South Oceanside neighborhood. But if I'm specifically craving good tacos, I'd probably make the choice to go somewhere else. This is San Diego County and it's filled with taquerias that blow the Tex-Mex style out of the water. Still, I think people should try Homestate and judge for themselves how they like the food. When they first opened the service was amazing! The food excellent! However the past couple of times the service was subpar at best! I ordered ahead of time only to get there 15 minutes later to be told it will be another 16 minutes... it would of been faster if I had just ordered it there- when I questioned why it wasn't ready the guy said we just caught up- all I witnessed was line cooks working like snails and servers standing around - all of the servers besides one were rude and acted like they didn't want to be there! My review is long overdue! From the first time I stepped into HomeState, I knew I was in for something special. As I entered, Victoria was the first HomeState Team Member who graciously greeted me however it wasn't a simple "hello" it was with engagement and it felt different...good different. Victoria's thoughtful gesture of mentioning my desire to meet Owner Breezy didn't go unnoticed. Breezy and her Sister Andy stopped by our table to say hello and took the time to engage with us (sat with us), making us feel important (& it continues each time I see them). Hearing about their restaurant journey was truly inspiring! Most recently, Olivia and McMurphy went above and beyond to ensure that our lunch experience was extraordinary. They rolled out the red carpet treatment, and it didn't go unnoticed. Now, let's talk about the food. Where do I even begin? The breakfast tacos, especially the Trinity, and Andy's Migas are my absolute favorite. And don't even get me started on the Frito Pie in a bag with brisket - it's a flavor explosion in every bite. The charro beans and homemade flour tortillas (Abuelitas recipe) are fire, and I never leave without grabbing these to enjoy at home. If you're in oceanside and want tacos, this is the spot. Food wise: I had the TJ taco and Piccadillo taco. All were amazing. Ambience wise: the decor was nice. It's like a lunch spot Service wise: Food came out fast. My order for screwed up but.. it happens Price wise: ok. More expensive than a regular taco shop but cheaper than your traditional sit down restaurant Overall: Id come back. I have always seen this place PACKED, so I was excited to finally try. The burger place next door was swamped but there were only a handful of people in Homestate tonight. I thought since the menu is somewhat on the smaller side, they would do super well what they had. Ordered one each of the regular tacos, the Tijuana taco and the loaded queso. The chicken taco was okay, it was very sauce forward (whatever sauce it's cooked in) and was salty. The picadillo taco was spicy (but I have a low spice tolerance) but again salty. The brisket tacos were okay. The queso was a big miss to me. It didn't taste like much of anything. The salsas also did not taste like anything. As I said I have a very sensitive spice tolerance and I kept putting it plain on the chips and did not taste anything. Something else that was a bummer was none of our food came out hot. I thought since it was around 6:30pm which I think is still within dinner and there weren't many customers to attend to at the time it would be fresh, it wasn't. I am giving the place two stars because it is nice inside and all the staff were very nice and personable, no complaints about them. Maybe I came on an off night and need to give them another chance..but everything really lacked flavor other than salt and we really tried to get a bit of everything. Pecos and trinity were favorites. Quesadilla was cheesy. Location is new and super clean. Spacious with indoor and also nice shaded outdoor seating. Decent parking lot. High chairs.
