I loved their LA location. I was so excited for them to come to Oceanside. But then I found out they didn't have their soyrizo breakfast taco. I tried their egg and black bean taco,but it was kind of dry and bland. The egg and mushroom had more flavor but had an odd texture because of the mushrooms used. The tortillas were delicious, the staff is really friendly, locations super cute, and I can't comment on the meat selection. If they ever brought back the soyrizo breakfast tacos, I would definitely go back again. read more

An update, we went again on Saturday, July 29, 2023. We were met with the same wonderful brisket, Trinity and Don't Mess with Texas tacos. Enjoyed the Hibiscus Lime drink, too. I want to shout out to an amazing server, Olivia. She went above and beyond helping us order some more delicious tacos, she was on the ready with a smile and a can-do attitude. Let's just start with the simple fact that the tacos are pretty dang good. I had the emo, brisket, and potato, none of which disappointed. HomeState is definitely part of the new wave of taco shops with more ingredients and more complex flavors than your standard street taco shop. Everything tasted fresh, with the flour tortillas being the standout part of my meal. My one bone to pick with this place is the price. I get quality ingredients cost a premium, but $6 for pretty small tacos is wild, even by today's standards. $4 would be more reasonable as it takes 3-4 to fill up an adult. Good place to check out? The place was almost empty and we still had to wait about 20-30 min, for a kid's size quesadilla, potatoes and two tacos. The water-down salsas were flavorless. My tacos were stuck to the wrappers. I didn't ask for them to- go. Wrapping the tacos is a waste and when I asked for some sugar for my tea, I was handed only three sugar packets. I really like homestate. I didn't think I was a breakfast taco girlie but the don't mess with Texas breakfast taco is great. The charro beans are so good here. The potatoes and queso are really good.I prefer the breakfast tacos here over the lunch ones Personally. None of the lunch tacos scream out great to me and I would rather get them from the taco shop.The flour tortillas are my favorite but the corn is also not bad. I enjoy the brisket here as it's not greasy. The pico here is also good. I think the prices are a little high for what it is but all restaurants are pricey now. We came across this restaurant on our way to another breakfast location. Decided to take a chance, and we were not disappointed. My wife had a burrito with bacon, egg and cheese on a floater Tia, and she was more than happy. I tried the potato taco, the chicken taco, and the chorizo and egg breakfast. All very good with the exception of the tortilla on my chicken taco was cold. We enjoyed a fresh order chips which were homemade. It would be great if the star rating on Yelp could be separated by food and service. Homestate is walkable from our house so we were excited to try it. Adorable decor with a big patio and plenty of seating even a high top bar area around the kitchen. The customer service here is top notch. 5 STARS!! The cashier was patient the whole time we were there. She was bubbly and made plenty of suggestions to customers. CUSTOMER TIP: Since there is only ONE cashier grab a menu and take time to read thru it and decide what you want prior to getting up to the cashier. The line was out the door, mainly because they have ONLY ONE POS system. SOOO much time was spent with customers reading the menu and trying to decide what they wanted once they got to the front. We sat right next to the cashier and watched her wait at times over 10 minutes for people to look at the menu and decide what they wanted. SUGGESTION TO HOMESTATE: Post an employee outside the door to answer questions, make suggestions and hand out menus. Every employee we came in contact with, and there were PLENTY, were helpful, cheery and caring. Once at your table, if you want another drink or any food item, you dont have to get back in line. Ask any employee for what you want and they bring you the food and pay machine. They cleared trash as quick as you placed it on the table and made sure we were enjoying our visit. On to the food. Here is where the star rating is 3 Stars. We ordered the Picadillo taco on a flour tortilla. This taco WAS DELICIOUS!!!! Seasoned to perfection. Flavorful and juicy. We actually would love to be able to make nachos with the Picadillo! We had the Tijuana Panther taco. This taco was way overpowered by the cheese and would have probably have been alot better without it. However, the brisket was a tender, melt in your mouth moment but needed some more seasoning. We also got the Don't Mess with Texas. Although the beans had plenty of flavor and were creamy, the overall flavor was just bacon. Now I know that isn't a bad thing necessarily but the beans already have bacon in them so when bacon is then added on top of that to the taco, it's just a bacon taco. We got a Large Queso and chips. We were very excited about this Queso. Here goes another unpopular opinion... The queso was piping hot but had NO FLAVOR. It had obvious bits and bobs of herbs and what looked to be peppers and spices but it just tasted like hot liquid with a hint of cheddar. We had to add ALOT of their green and red salsa to it to Zhuzh it up. I would not order it again. I must mention a lady behind us boasted about the queso and even asked for the recipe so IDK were she has had Queso before. We have had jar queso with more flavor. I dont know if the chips are HOMEmade but they tasted like ordinary chips. So they pride themselves on these in house, HOMEmade flour tortillas. I hate to say it but the flour tortillas were not anything better than the ordinary package tortillas. We expected a San Diego off the plancha tortillas and this was not it. SIGH... The Spicy Paloma Margarita tho!! WOOOO! Now this was tasty! We had 2 each because we could not resist. They were strong too! Not like a normal watered down slushy mix. It tasted fresh and you could smell the tequila! The spicy rim smacked too. The prices were reasonable at an average $5 per taco as the tacos were big and did have alot of filling. Margaritas were $15 so a bit overpriced. All in all if we do go back it will be for the excellent service, the Picadillo tacos and the Spicy Paloma Margarita. **I have noticed this message after reviews from the business; "Totally understand our menu might not be for everyone - if you decide to visit us again our team would be happy to look over the menu with you to find something you might enjoy!". Having lived in San Antonio, Tex Mex tacos and food is preference for me so I was excited to try this place. Tacos were small for its price but tasty. The establishment is clean but too posh for TexMex feel. Made me miss the mom pops hole in the wall comfort I always felt in SA when getting Tex Mex food and tacos. The ambiance is just as important as the taste of the food to me. The service was meh. I ordered flour tortillas with my tacos to go and I didn't get my tortillas so I had to drive back for them. Lined up for the grand opening and it was worth every minute! The service is friendly and efficient, the ambiance is inviting and fun, and the food was delicious. We ordered 4 tacos and an order of the potatoes with "lil queso". Brisket taco had so much flavor and there was a generous amount of brisket and perfect amount of everything else. I had it on the fresh corn tortilla...perfect! We also had the trinity breakfast taco with egg and bacon and other yummy ingredients on Homestate's homemade flour tortilla. Again, the flavor and proportions of egg to bacon was perfect. I love how the eggs were not over cooked so it made the taco moist and yummy. My daughter had the chicken taco, which was also seasoned well and not dry, like chicken tacos can be. Our 4th taco was the "Don't Mess with Texas" taco. Filled with refried beans, bacon, cheddar and potatoes. Very different experience than tacos I'm used to but delicious, nonetheless. Our potato side was hot and crispy and the queso was warm and had tiny bits of jalapeños(?), tomatoes (?) (not sure but it wasn't just your everyday melted cheese) and a perfect side for our tacos. I also got a drip coffee and it's awesome that they offer half and half and oat milk as milk options. They have these cute little glasses for customers to help themselves for water, as well as bottles of homemade red or green salsa. Don't let the size of the tacos fool you. They're a little bigger than street tacos but are super generous with their meat options. There are vegetarian options as well. The ambiance is bright and welcoming and I love the attention to detail from the raised wallpaper to the unique lighting and wood wainscoting. we had enjoyed the pasadena location of homestate and were excited to hear they were opening a location in south o. so we stopped for breakfast on the way to sd for the day. service was top notch. you order at the counter and sit down. they have staff members who will take orders table side as well if you have forgotten anything or want to order more so you don't have to stand in line again. the food was delicious and came out quickly. great flavors. don't forget the queso my wife took the kids to wash their hands and noticed a lady working on the computer and told them to not be loud so she could work. turns out it was the owner, brezzy. she stopped and talked with my wife and even came to wish me a happy birthday. then brought us free cookies as snacks for the road. oceanside, give them a shot. read more

The space looks nice and I was looking forward to try a new spot in SouthO. It is very pricey which is kind of what you expect nowadays for these kinds of spots. Unfortunately the food did not match the price. We can in around 6:45pm one evening, ordered and they brought out our food within 10 minutes. Come to realize that they are wrapped and labeled, they are not freshly cooked as they were not hot nor warm. It seems like they pre-make all their tacos and just have them in a warming area. To charge that much for Tacos and not have them fresh is beyond disappointing. Will not be going back or recommending. read more

Our first time trying HomeState and we were happy. My husband had the brisket tacos and he liked them so much and is a bit of a meat snob so he recommends them. I had the Comal and Emo's tacos as I do not eat meat so ordered the black bean (no lard) and was very happy. The spicy Paloma cocktail was interesting but would recommend the margarita.
