We were told that the wait would be 25 minutes and we were 2nd or 3rd on the list. 35 minutes later there are now 6 people in front of us. Shhhh: hidden gem in Sumner! It's a basic diner, but the staff and food really make it special. They were very busy when we went, but very attentive if you asked them for something. It was also freezing! However, once the coffee and food came the chill was definitely welcomed. Bill total was just under $50 for 2 adults and a child, which for the quality and amount of food was a really good deal. Let's get to what matters: FOOD! The menu was much smaller than the photos on yelp. Keep this in mind... there weren't as many choices, but it covered all the basic areas. They don't have a website, but do have Facebook, better updates on the menu may be noted there. We started with the cinnamon roll. It was clearly homemade, warm, sweet without being overly sugary, and likely the best I've ever had! It fed all 3 of as an appetizer. Hubby got the chili hash. He ordered the 1/2 order and couldn't finish the other 1/2. The full order should be reserved for professional eating competitors! I'm an eggs Benedict junkie and the was good. The eggs were poached to medium, which I prefer because I hate any undercooked white part, but it lacked the dramatic of the ooze which I loooove too. I get the hollandaise sauce on the side because I like to control the amount. I added a touch of hot sauce which took the good to great! The little got toast, scrambled eggs, and sausage which she devoured. The only thing that needs work is the coffee; it was a bit on the weaker side. Totally worth going!!! A friend and I had breakfast here, today. I had heard good things about the place so have been looking forward to trying it out. She had some kind of Farmers Omelette, I can't remember exactly what. I had biscuits and gravy, we both had the home fried potatoes, I ordered two eggs over-easy which is an extra charge but comes with a meat choice which I didn't want but the price is the same for the eggs without the meat so I ordered sausage links. It's a good thing I did, it was the best of the meal. The biscuits and gravy were almost cold. This is a common problem at almost every restaurant I've ever ordered them at. I don't know why but it's true. The eggs were not even close to over-easy, waaay over cooked. The potatoes for me and my friend were also waaay over cooked. The overall taste of everything was kind of blah. Not nasty, just not good. OK, the coffee was pretty good and as I said, the sausage was the best of the meal. I don't eat out often but can afford to eat out whenever I want. That being said, I thought everything was overpriced. Breakfast for two was $38.21. I left an eight dollar tip because the waitress was friendly and pretty efficient considering she seemed to be pretty busy. So, 46 bucks for breakfast for two seem pretty expensive to me and when I consider the food was not good, it was a complete waste of money. I won't be going back. I hope the waitress can find a job at a place better suited to her high level of service and personality. read more

I had them make a Reuben into a wrap and it was next, the homemade goodies are something to write home about! Today I got strawberry rhubarb cream pie and a caramel brownie with pretzel crust. After reading the great reviews on Yelp I was excited to try this place. Sadly, it did not live up to the hype. Coffee was slightly above room temperature. Corned beef hash was straight out of a can. The biscuits were dry and flavorless (tasted like premade store bought. My husband ordered the eggs Benedict, and basically got a hard boiled egg on a biscuit. Every time I try a new place for breakfast, especially if it's a small place with local ownership, I try their chicken fried steak/chicken. So I've eaten a lot of it, and I can say without question that this place has the best chicken fried steak of all those I've tried in Pierce and King Counties. The steak is so tender that the huge steak knife with which they serve it can rightly be said is just for show. The only utensil you'll need is your fork. The batter is light, and the generous amount of country gravy is outstandingly flavorful. Go for the Big Chicken, a double steak-extravaganza that will either put you into a blissful food coma afterward or provide you with a second meal. Oh, and the accoutrements are deliciously prepared, too. Choose the pan-fried (country) potatoes with peppers over the hash browns; they're crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, just like they should be. Rounded out with eggs and pancakes or toast, this dish is stellar. The 5-star rating is for the friendly customer service and the chicken-fried steak only. I can't vouch for anything else on the menu because I have never ventured beyond the CFS, and I've eaten here nearly a dozen times. But testimony from dining partners tells me that most everything else, especially the hobo hash and cinnamon rolls, is also delicious, and portions are generous. The only other advice I have is to get here early on weekends or expect a wait. read more

Since another establishment on Sumner permanently closed, we found ourselves looking across the street for our Monday breakfast. After being seated, we ordered beverages and I usually can tell a location's dedication by what they serve for Orange Juice. Is it fresh squeezed? From a container? I was disappointed that my OJ tasted like water. Wife had two cups of coffee and both were watered down, not a good start Food took a bit of time. We weren't in hurry but the service was slow. It was about 30 minutes before we were served. Wife ordered a hobo scramble and she barely touched it. She said the eggs were dry. The potatoes were undercooked. It was kind of greasy. She did like the bacon and picked through it but the majority just wasnt appealing to her and was left in the plate. I ordered a two egg breakfast with hashbrowns. sausage and pancakes. The eggs tasted kind of old. The hash was above average and cooked well. But the sausage was just ok. a bit one dimensional flavor. The pancakes just weren't good. They weren't cooked hot enough and so they were kind of soft and a bit soggy. They did have a nice taste but the texture was a bit odd. The service was very good. And the decor was very cool, but the food just didnt taste good to us. Sadly, we will probably not travel to Sumner gor breakfast any longer.. read more

A nice place to go for breakfast in Sumner. This has become our go-to for breakfast out. The prices are fair and you get a great deal for the price. Service is usually good, although we have had a time or two when things seemed to take awhile longer than they should. My biggest complaint has been the hash browns. No matter how many times we have tried to explain crispy, they always end up coming out lightly browned on the outside and barely cooked on the inside. One server explained that the cooktop simply could not get hot enough because there is constantly new(cold) food on it. Overall, we will be back again but probably not ordering the hash browns. read more

My son has severe nut allergies. They were extremely accommodating and aware of switching pans type of protocols. I was impressed at their approach! The food is phenomenal to top it off. The pancakes actually taste like a real pancake mix, vs some fake pour batter. The hash browns aren't overly greasy. The biscuits are really nicely made. It's just all cooked very well and with love. First time coming here with my family. Food was good (had a Hawaiian omelet) however hash browns could have been cooked a little more. Waitstaff seemed a little overwhelmed with the busy volume, although our waitress was young so that may have played a factor in it. Hometown Charm Cafe is a hit! We had walked part of the Rails to Trails pathway and were starving! Boy, did we pick the right place! The service was top notch as well! Brunch started with a huge cinnamon roll- chock full of cinnamon and cream cheese icing - served warm and delish! I had the "senior lite breakfast" ...I admitted I wasn't 62- she was so cute and said "I'm not gonna card you"! Although I gave one of my eggs to my husband the serving was great. Could have had toast but upgraded the meal to include the cinnamon roll. My husband had the giant pancake combo- he couldn't finish all of the pancakes. Everything was fresh and tasted so good! What an adorable little space with delicious food! We had breakfast and a club sandwich with fries. All was delicious and reasonably priced!

Went to this place for the first time today and won't be back. My daughter ordered apple juice that she told me didn't taste right, when I tried the juice it was clear that it was rotten and tasted like it had spent 10 weeks fermenting into hard cider. Food was mediocre tasting and the second we got our food we had fruit flys SWARMING us and crawling all over our food. When we told the waitress multiple of them came to our table and apologized and explained they don't know what's causing the flies and that half their dining area was closed because of it and offered to move us to a different table, which we declined because it was very obvious the flies were just all over. They said the health department has been coming to visit trying to eradicate them and they "can't figure out what it is". One waitress said she'd get the owner and then came back and said the owner wouldn't speak to us but wasn't going to charge us for our meal (that bugs were crawling all over). I should think not. We parked out back and had to walk by the kitchen on our way out, which the door was open to and it didn't look sanitary to me. They had a giant unmanned stack of potato peels just sitting on the counter. No wonder you can't get the fly problem to go away. My stomach is starting to hurt and I'll be calling the health department. read more

I really wanted to like this place. First off. We were seated rather quickly however the waiting area is beyond tiny and cramped and way too many people seem to be waiting for a table. Good sign? Not really. We were sat upstairs. There is this really weird section in the back that could have more seating but appears to have a weird table set up where they ring in the orders and get rid of menus and dirty plates. Kitchen is downstairs so not sure what they really use that area for. Seems like a waste of space. I don't know if it's written anyway not sure if they serve alcohol. I don't need a mimosa or Bloody Mary with breakfast, however my counterpart was craving something. From the highschool staf we got, "we don't do drinks like that." Take that as you will. I'm very impressed with young people working but customer service is something you gain as you go. No offer of water or condiments etc. fine I can ask but I feel it should be offered. Coffee was watered down and not pleasant. I ordered my own hobo hash with Swiss cheese. Literally slices of packaged Swiss cheese not fully melted placed on top of the hash. We decided to check out this local cafe before going to see Santa. There was 8 in our party and the staff has us seated within 5 minutes of arriving. The coffee came fast and hot and the waitress took our orders fairly quick. The food arrived correctly as ordered and was absolutely delicious!
