Tldr very flavorful skewers This was a random find on Google that I was curious about. It was empty when I walked in but the place seemed clean and the skewer warmer they use is really cute. We took out order using the QR code and water was brought out to us. They also had hot water!! Which I have not been able to have at any other skewer place I've been to so far. We ordered a whole bunch of things but here are some highlights: - mantou (steamed bun slice): is good!!! I judge all my skewer places by how the mantou tastes and this one is now one of my favorites. It's very flavorful with the seasoning and not burnt. I ordered 4 sets and they were pretty consistent too - dough soup: very tasty and hearty! They sell a vegetarian version here and I don't like tomatoes in soup at all but I didn't mind it too much. My friend said the broth tasted like bullion though so that's something to look out for - roasted okra: one of my favorite veggies and they have it here. Yum. - thousand page tofu (chiba tofu): I love this tofu. I don't usually see it anywhere so it was a good find for me hehe Overall this place is quite tasty. The seasoning they use is very flavorful and I would say it's on the saltier side but not too much to ruin the taste. The service is also slower than other places that I have been too but I'm ok with that for the quality of skewer that they are bringing out. Authentic North-East Chinese bbq. With the growth of Chinese skewer places that have opened up since Homey Skewer did, I am surprised that they aren't seeing the same customer attraction. I've looked over some of the one and two star reviews. Here are some updates and considerations: Credit cards? Yes, they do accept credit. Slow/rude service? I joke with my friends that if a Chinese place has more than 3.5 stars on yelp, it is not likely going to be authentic. A lot of this comes down to expectations held by many people (and their yelp reviews) regarding customer service. They aren't being rude. Regarding slow service. This is a small place with few staff. Be patient. They are trying to do it right, not fast. Drink some beer, snack on cold dishes that require little prep and chat with your friends while waiting for skewers. Food: For some people, this kind of food, isn't going to be their thing. For some this is an exciting and new experience. For others, this is a reminder of home, a taste and smell that brings back memories of a familiar place, so far away. We stopped here looking for wonton soup on a Monday night. It wasn't crowded at all; the inside has about 5-10 tables (can be broken up or made larger). We were greeted right away and sat down. Ordered via QR code and on our phone. I liked how the menu had a picture for every item. My date had a beer and fried rice. I had the wonton soup; it was so tasty and I could tell both the soup and fried rice were made really fresh. I think our server was the owner - really nice man and great service/attention. I ordered on Door Dash for pickup. I was charged $64 for such a tiny amount of food which was COLD also. I have had skewers in China and this place the seasoning was very poorly done. I don't know if this is an off day for this but I feel totally ripped off. The chicken skewers had tiny little pieces to the extent why waste the skewer? I just don't understand this place. This place is a hidden gem! Went here on a Monday night and it was totally dead ordered a bunch of skewers and some buns. Ordered on an I pad and sat down they brought me water. The vibe is super Bay Area chill decor. Food was delicious meat, perfectly cooked. Sweet spicy and complex spices. It was a little expensive but pretty standard for skewers. I used to like this place a lot more but recently I came back. The seasoning has gotten a lot more "saucy" and sweet, almost like a spicy barbecue. I miss when it was more of a dry cumin oil rub. Just not as good as it used to be and I don't like the direction its gone. read more

Outdoor seating only. The order came out in 15 minutes. We ordered the Kim chi fried rice. It's good but nothing that amazes you. If you're in the area and want skewers and rice, this is the place to go. But I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. The portions are a decent size and the staff's are very stern. Parking is no issue as you have the entire plaza. Be careful not to park too close to the location itself as there are outdoor dining and the tent made the parking lots smaller than usual so every car is pushed about 1 feet into their perspective lanes. read more

Ordered the Enoki Mushroom Skewers, Thai Chicken Skewers, Lamb Intestine Skewers, Beef intestine skewers, and Corn skewer. The corn was the only item we would have again. It was my first time trying Lamb intestine and Beef Intestine and i thought it tasted odd. My friend who has had it before said that the meat tasted "old", and was covered up by the variety of spices/ sodium. The lamb intestine specifically tasted like what you would imagine the scent of walking into the fish section of an asian grocery store. Overall it was okay, but i wouldn't have it again. The service was nice though and the place was empty when we came around 10pm. Our server sat us down quickly and pointed us to the QR code to order our skewers. Im a huge fan of skewers and I have been to other places around here but have never tried this place yet. It looked promising on Yelp so I decided to give it a try and I'm so glad I did! I came on Friday at 6pm and we were the first people there for dinner. They have a barcode that you can scan so you can order on your phone and your meal comes out. We ordered beef, lamb, sausage, green beans, fish balls, steamed buns, corn, fish tofu, and fried chicken cutlets. Everything was delicious!! Their seasoning is super flavorful and also spicy. If you can't handle spice then I probably wouldnt suggest because it can get pretty spicy as you eat. Luckily I'm a huge fan of spice so I loved it. I really liked the steamed buns and the meats the most. They placed our skewers on a heated plate so they all stayed warm. They also had a container to keep the skewer sticks in when we were done. This is a small hole in the wall kind of place. It wasn't crowded when we went and they only have a few tables. I really recommend coming here. I'm giving them 4 stars and ranking up. They are 3.5 stars based on the customer service I received and portion size. I need to say the food was really tasty. Everything I ordered was delish. This place is a Cali-Hole-in-rhe-wall and pretty much meets how in the wall expectations, the food is good but here the portion sizes are small; the prices are low so it puts me on the fence. The customer service is aligned to what you would receive overseas. In a way you just get what you pay for. To sun it uo, yes I will return on a late night when I'm craving something good - they are open until 11:00/23:00, which is late for the sleepy San Jose town, and it beats Anything else that is offered after 8:00 or 9:00 pm. I'm only giving this place a one star because their fried rice wasn't too bad but everything else was terrible. They need to do a better job at customer service. You might as well shut down your business if you don't care for your customers. We were the only people in the restaurant and there were 3-4 workers (2 servers and 2 cooks). We orders two dishes and it took almost 30 minutes to get out food. The worst part was seeing the chef cook food for the two servers and watching them eat in front of us and until they were done eating was when they finally decided to get our food -____- I've never experienced anything like this. The inside of their restaurant is so tacky too. They had stains everywhere and had boxes all over the place one box even said "toilet paper." I went around 15 mins after they opened and had to wait about 45 minutes but it was still worth the wait!!! Small place with an extensive menu. They were kind enough put tables in the front for our party of 9 so we can dine outside. You order via a QR code and can pay via Venmo. We were there for a couple hours. They have meat, tofu, and veggies. We did notice that they use the same sauce/marinade for every single dish so not too much variety in terms of taste. When a friend sent this place to us and I was reading the reviews, I was slightly skeptical. The reviews are all over the place and I probably could've saved myself by listening to my gut instincts. The food was just ok, although we got only skewers and an order of dumplings. All the skewers had the same spices, which tasted like cumin and some sort of chili flake. None of the skewers were hot, all tasted very room temperature and honestly, they just tasted the same. We ordered a variety of skewers - beef, lamb, fish tofu, enoki mushroom, bacon wrapped enoki, A-choy, chicken skin, chicken wing, chicken gristle, and an order of dumplings. The only thing that really stood out was the bacon wrapped enoki, everything else was extremely mediocre. The dumplings were extremely, extremely bland and the skin was thick. The service was subpar, the waitress brought out the skewers without gloves on and we had to constantly ask her to bring us water. Maybe it was the language barrier, but she seemed very awkward every time we had to ask her what it was she was bringing to our table. They do not accept credit cards. I'm not sure if they did before, but they certainly don't now. They only accepted PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or cash. We asked her if we would be able to each Venmo separately instead of one check and she just stood there, really confused. We ended up just having one person Venmo. It felt like an insanely expensive dinner ($44/per person) for mediocre skewers that all tasted the same. Maybe their other dishes are better, but the skewers were not worth it. read more

I went here with two friends, who liked it a little more than the 3 stars (I rounded down from 3.25 and am holding to it). The Good: -Bacon wrapped mushrooms: yes, just yes. This place was just ok. My boyfriend and I came here on a Monday night when it just opened and we were the first customers there for the night. The interior looked really nice and modern-- the tables and chairs were clean and not sticky, and everything was wiped down. I ordered the A vegetable, enoki mushrooms, beef, lamb, and fish tofu skewers. We also shared a cold noodle. What really confused me was that the A vegetable and enoki mushroom skewers were cold. I don't even think they grilled it before they served it to us. It might have been cooked and just skewered? Not sure. But they were seasoned pretty well. The lamb and beef were seasoned pretty well too. But they were a little tough. Fish tofu was delicious though. What also confused me was that I found bits of the wooden skewers inside my fish tofu and had to spit that out. I enjoyed the noodles in the cold noodles but the soup was waaaaay to sweet. Came here a few times pre-COVID, and overall, service and food was pretty good. Their Kimchi Fried Rice was solid, and especially a big fan of their Enoki Skewers and Chive Skewers; most other places just fry up a mess of enoki or chive and slap some sauce in, but this place actually takes the time to skewer each piece, which allows for charring and just tastes and looks better. Be wary when coming at late hours though, I find that this place is prone to having customers that are super loud and annoying, but other than that, definitely try this place out. read more

We were going to there since last year, And tonight something very shocking happened to us while we were waiting at our table and waiting for the food, their servant put a dirty plate next to us and I didn't realize it first but my boyfriend mentioned it and said can you ask them to change it ( amazingly we still stayed) so I brought the plate to her and I said hey can you please change this plate with a clean one and her answer amazingly blow my head, she said no but I put a foil on top it. We need more places like this!! The skewers and dishes are all so flavorful and delicious! I feel like the same powder is just put over most of the skewered items to grill, but it is so good and it works. All the skewers are pretty good. My friends and I like getting the lamb, kidney, chicken heart, shrimp (the shrimp is grilled with the skin on), chicken skin, enoki mushrooms, a-vegetable, and many others. For the non skewered dishes, the preserved egg tofu is good, and my favorite is the homey cold dish. It has cucumbers, tofu skin, some other veggies, and peanuts in a sweet spicy sauce, and it is very addicting. We couldn't stop munching on the peanuts even after we finished everything. Whenever I have been here, it hasn't been too crowded and the items come out pretty quickly. This place is a little hard to find though since the sign above it is old and doesn't match, so you really have to look at the store front. Somehow when my friends and I come here, even though the skewers are just a few dollars each, we always end up spending at least $25+. I guess when you're just picking all these small, individual items, it's easy to go over! But we always end up finishing everything too.
