This place has really gone downhill--and it pains me to say that. I have gone here for years but they have become extremely lax in terms of making sure they deliver quality food. I ordered a simple combo plate of pork strips, boneless spareribs and pork fried rice. Then what I got was essentially a plateful of rice which costs 50 cents to produce, some fatty boneless spareribs and some cold pork strips. I couldn't get over the presentation. The appetizers weren't even mixed in with the food but were just in separate paper bags of some kind. It looked terrible. Who wants to eat a plastic bin full of rice? Even if you were starving, such a presentation would turn anyone off. This restaurant needs to ensure every customer gets a quality meal. They should stop sparing quality so they can roll out more orders. So until that happens I cant recommend Hong Kong Dragon especially when there are so many other options available. read more

I liked Hong Kong Dragon when it was a small mostly take-out joint, but now it's absoutely beautiful! The food here is typical Chinese, but they make it as you order nothing is sitting out all day. I love HKD, Honestly, I see no reason to go anywhere else for Chinese food. All of the things I typically order here are delicious and well priced. It's close to home and the (older man) waiter that's usually working...hilarious. Try the peking ravioli, pan fried of course. Also, the General gao and orange chicken are great. I have never personally imbibed at HKD but, I hear the drinks are fab too. If you're around town and cravin' Asian, this is your place. read more

Food was good, service was ok. Very comfortable atmosphere.... However at the end of our meal the check came and to my surprise a 15% gratuity had been added to our bill. There was only three in our party and the total bill came to about $46.00, with the gratuity added the total was about $53.00. I had them run my card for the full amount and it had a suggested tip amount to add again. The waiter never told us the gratuity had been added and you really had to look at the bill to notice it. I don't know if this was just a one time mix up or a scam to get a double tip....I would just suggest everyone to look over there bill carefully. read more

It's a brand new Hong Kong Dragon! As of August 14, 2011, the restaurant has expanded. There's a beautifully designed large room for sit-down meals, and a full bar. The menu has also been expanded. Our last meal included the salt-and-pepper calamari, a personal favorite in other restaurants -- this version was terrific! We also had the shrimp with lobster sauce, which they do as a brown sauce - excellent. And the Suffering Bastard cocktail was right on the money. This is a terrific addition to "restaurant row" in Winthrop (La Siesta is next door). Prices are perfect. And it's guaranteed that you have probably NEVER seen a sink such as they have in the ladies room - gorgeous!! read more

Food is pretty good, not the best but a lot better than you expect from looking at the place from the outside. It only has a few tables, it's a very small place. The big problem I have with Hong Kong Dragon are the prices. Soup, 1 egg roll, rice, Szechuan pork and a can of Pepsi $18. read more

First time in Hong Kong Dragon. Stopped to order take out and was pleasantly surprised to learn that they have a FULL BAR. Placed my order and had one of the BEST Mai Tai's I have had in a long time. The owners were walking around talking to everyone and they are very friendly. My food was fresh and hot and great! Chicken Fingers were cooked perfectly and the General G's Chicken was spicy but not over the top. If you have a chance, I HIGHLY recommend!!! read more

You order Chinese take out cause it's fast and consistent. When the Sox are about to play potentially the last game to clinch the pennant you want the food on time. They say 30 min and you are still waiting almost an hour later - meanwhile the game has started - that's just not cool. State the time accurately. And why would it take almost an hour? Hong Kong Dragon has been a staple in Winthrop for 20 years and its always been reliable for decent, affordable Chinese food. Until recently its been takeout only. The owners were finally able to renovate and expand - even adding a bar! It's a welcome change with a nice casual atmosphere and the same very good quality food. Now I don't know if there are new owners or what but it was not the same. Food was awful. Not one thing we ordered was enjoyed! I ordered the general gaos chicken with white rice. The chicken was terrible! Well lack of chicken. It was all crunchy fried breading. My husband ordered the pork fried rice with lobster sauce and boneless spareribs and fried shrimp. I have been going to this place since I was 12. Almost 20 years later this place has continued to serve amazing food at a great price but has expanded from a take out restaurant to a beautiful, relaxing, contemporary establishment. They have updated their menu to include smaller portions for a lower price. This allowed me to try many different items such as the mixed appetizer plate (chicken wings, spare ribs, egg roll, chicken fingers, chicken terriyaki and steak terriyaki), chicken chow mein, fried rice and lobster sauce for about $30. Excellent food and service! I came in to grab late night take-out after injuring my right foot on 2-25-1. I hobbled into the restaurant in a boot cast. The ladies at the front reception area were so helpful and positive and helped me transport my food in a bag with handles! The dumplings were delicious and I loved the homemade (not pre-processed red gelatinous goo) sweet and sour sauce that came with the Chef Platter A5. I will definitely return on my next trip to Boston! read more

Hong Kong Dragon is a little nicer than your average Chinese restaurant, but I couldn't go more than 3 stars for an overall review. The lo mein is a highlight, but the fried rice is flavorless. Overall, not the best Chinese I've ever had but really good service and enough good bites to overlook the not so good. My husband and I sat at the bar on a Saturday night so we could watch football and tried several dishes and drinks. My husband gave two thumbs up to the mai tais. I tried a little myself and also agreed they were a step above most Chinese food joints. Both of us loved the crab rangoons. Huge serving and very tasty! For an entree I tried the garlic shrimp combo with vegetable lo mein. I liked the garlic shrimp (though it was a tad salty), but did not like the lo mein. It tasted over cooked and crunchy. Hong Kong Dragon is hands down my favorite Chinese cuisine restaurant. I have come here probably around 100 times over the years. They have many good menu choices. When you go in and order a combo plate, you get to swap your rice for lo mein or vise versa. You can also get a soup, which can be hot and sour, which is a spicy tofu soup. (Thats what I get) Or you can get the chicken noodle soup. You can also get an additional side. I get and recommend S9, which is lobster sauce, S15, which is chicken fingers in a sweet cherry sauce, or my personal favorite, S22. S22 is General Gaus Chicken, which is breaded chicken in a sweet sauce. I highly recommend this place due to the low cost, and high amount of food that you get for it. Try it out! read more

I love this place! It is my second time eating at the dinning room and I am already planning a dinner with some friends next week. The cleanliness and the modern design is excellent. The staff is friendly and super helpful. Most importantly, their food is fresh, delicious, and not pricey at all. Finally the Raspberry Mai Tai are to die for! This place is great! The food is unbelievable, the portions are huge, and the prices are so affordable! Every time I go here to eat I am surprised at how small my bill is in comparison to how much food is in my belly! This place has been recently renovated, and the restaurant really is a great place to go to eat. I have eaten lunch takeout once, and dinner a few times in the restaurant. I have tried the Chicken Bali Hai which was incredible (definitely try it!), the U-Dong Vegetable Noodles also incredible, the Garlic Pan Fried Noodles (seriously they taste almost like an Italian restaurant, delicious!), and a variety of appetizers. Definitely a great Winthrop restaurant, and worth trying! I was hesitant to go to the restaurant upon reading the back-and-forth reviews but I am so happy that I did!
