I first heard of Hong Kong Express through a professor of mine from Taiwan. Coming from a Taiwanese family and from the west side of the mountains where good Chinese food can be found without a problem, I was thoroughly surprised at the food at Hong Kong Express. It is the best Chinese food in Spokane that I've had since moving here 2 years ago. I would definitely recommend anyone who goes here to order off the menu. Of course, the cheap buffet prices are a real eye catcher, but the quality of the food from the menu is significantly better and worth the extra money (the dishes are not overpriced either). I would strongly suggest the house special fried rice, the spicy peppered shrimp, and the pork chow fun. I don't believe the buffet is an accurate gauge of how good their food is. They also offer dimsum which is a huge plus in my book. For $2 a plate, it's not bad, seeing as dimsum plates in Bellevue, WA or Seattle cost $2.50 and above. The cleanliness of the place is definitely not something that's of any A+ standards, however it is typical for asian restaurants, thus it's not something that I really pay too much attention to. If it was effecting the quality of the food (e.g. molding veggies, things stuck to the glassesme tc.) however that would be another story. But it doesn't so the atmosphere doesn't bother me. The waitresses are super friendly. people may think that their way of service is very odd, but it is very typical of chinese people to act in this way. I will continue to come here as long as their open =) It is the only Chinese food that I will eat other than the stuff I make myself. read more

(As long as it closes, you are good) This fed me for 3 whole meals and I loved everything I tried. You can also dine-in for a little bit more, and you get unlimited food. Best Chinese food in Spokane. Easily. They are from L.A. and the owner knows what she is doing. Advice? Specify that you hate Americanized thick sweet gloppy sauces. She will agree and point you to good stuff on the menu. Most of the chef's specials are very good. Best dish in Spokane? Boiled fish. I know it sounds awful and English or something but it is spicy and tasty and the best thing to order, Chinese style, in Spokane County. They are Korean so order the BBQ beef and the kimchee. I would give it five stars purely out of comparison with other Spokane Chinese food but it's a HUGE step down from Chinatown in Seattle. Just the truth. You can get pretty decent Chinese food here from a reasonably priced menu. They have very good hot and sour soup. I usually order their Fu zhou fried rice and dim sum items with friends. You can't go wrong with egg tarts, sesame balls, and rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. They also have off the menu dim sum items. Be sure to ask for the pan fried turnip cakes. The folks here sure know how to make excellent fried rice. And yes the food can be on the saltier side. I would ask the chef to reduce the amount of salt next time when I am here. read more

Sure it's not the best or authentic Chinese restaurant, but this place hits the spot when I'm craving Chinese food. It does look run down on the outside and the inside has seen better days. The buffet isn't huge and when I went yesterday, it was pretty bare (aka needing refills)... But the food is pretty decent tasting and I can get nice and full on greasy Chinese food. I like the noodles and Mongolian beef. And their chicken meatball things are good. The egg drop soup, though appearing to glow in the dark, is fairly tasty. Staff is really friendly and helpful, coming by frequently to ask if we need anything. Good deal for dinner if you have a bunch of people and kids. I've been a couple times and enjoy it. This is a case of "Don't judge a book by it's cover"! The building doesn't look like much on the outside (or the inside for that fact), but the food more than compensates for it. You just can't go wrong ordering off the menu or selecting the buffet. The killer deal is two dinner buffets for $12.99 if you order two beverages to go with it. However, there are plenty of great deals to be had. I used to work nearby, as a result I would eat there once or twice a week. I took a job farther away, so I hadn't been there in almost 4 years. The owner/waitress looked at me and said "You used to come here all the time a few years ago!", and gave me a bit of that "tsk tsk" look. True, the waitstaff is not your typical personality type; some people aren't sure what to make of it. Once you get used to it, it's endearing and you realize it's likely just a cultural difference. I ordered some dinner to be delivered to my hotel room and was very pleased with the food. I ordered via the yelp application and my food was delivered within 35 minutes. I got an order of the fried dumplings along with chicken in garlic sauce with steamed white rice. Everything tasted fresh, my only complaint is that the dumplings were very greasy as it appears they weren't drained well after removing from the frying pan. But I worked around the grease and enjoyed the meal very much. The garlic chicken had a tasty sauce, big slices of tender chicken and plenty of crisp broccoli. Soup of the day (beef something) , vegetable egg roll, pork lo mein, Mongolian beef and Sweet and Sour pork. Soup-Ok . Too salt but decent flavor Egg Roll- Good. Not oily but crispy and fresh Lo Mein-Wow! Mongolian Beef-Nicely spiced, tender beef, great veggies. S.S. Chicken-Fresh. Batter light and crispy. Not oily. Very good score overall. I found this place thanks to the GrubHub app, which allows you to order delivery from local restaurants - SO much better than your usual pizza chain place! This restaurant was on time, and food was delivered with utensils and condiments as promised. Here's my review of each of the items I ordered: -Pork Sui Mai ($2.25): Really porky. There was something odd about the meat flavor. -BBQ Pork Bun ($1.50): Not bad, but a bit too salty -Shrimp Dumpling ($2.25): Skip. This was more like a cold blob of something inside, and I'm not convinced it was shrimp. -Spring roll ($1.90): I find it odd the restaurant calls these spring rolls - maybe because of the wrapper used? These vegetable spring rolls are deep fat fried. They were pretty good. -Coconut Cake ($2.25): It was okay. I prefer the green coconut cake with no filling. This was white coconut cake with yellow filling. I am not sure what the filling was. -Beef Chow Mei Few ($9.99): This was delicious. Slightly greasy, it had a good flavor, and finally, I found the kind of noodles I like (thin rice noodles). I gave two stars because overall, the only good thing was the noodles; everything else needs improvement. Add a $2.99 delivery fee, $2.01 for tax, and a 15% tip ($3.77), my total was $28.91. The food was mediocre, bland and tough. Hard to eat and over priced. We ordered the orange chicken and a spicey pork dish with a side of pot stickers. The portion is perfect for 4, both entrees came with rice, one small packet of soy and chili sauce. $39.48 includes tax, delivery fee of $2.99. Second time, we loved it, much better at a 38 min wait time. The sesame chicken is so good, ordered mixed vegetables that came with sauce and both entrees with rice. Two pork buns for $1.50 each and came out to $31.70. Lots to eat, left overs and very satisfied. Over all: the app to order with, convenient but to track your order is a pain. You have to sign up to another app to manage that. If you don't, you hope dinner comes on time. The food has great portions, seasoning is well worth, the meat is tough to eat and the rice is cooked well. The delivery time and/or cook time is sooooo long and unpredictable. Omg you guys... Best Chinese food I've had in YEARS!!! Super huge portions. Each dish you order could easily feed 4. Everything is very fresh and flavorful. I ordered black pepper chicken and roasted pork fried rice and they delivered to my hotel in a reasonable amount of time, and gave me a third dish of sweet n sour chicken, all delivered in a nice little package by a smiling hippy kid. Other Chef's specials worth noting are salt & pepper shrimp, fresh squid that can be prepared 3 ways, sizzling black pepper beef and beef stir-fried flat rice noodles (gan chow gnou haw) amongst other seemingly authentic items. Additionally, I think this restaurant's the only place that offers dim-sum in town. Those not interested in the buffet, ordering entrees of the menu, can also find lunch and dinner single and 2-item combo specials like you'd find at a Panda Express (albeit fresh made). Bottles of Tsingtao for $3. Waitstaff is friendly, yet can be a bit obtrusive (misconstrued by some reviewers at other sites as rude), but I think they're just quirky and eccentric. I have ordered before and the food was always great, I wanted something different, so ordered the lemon chicken, I was veary shocked at it. All it was, was battered chicken and a slice of lemon on top, nothing else! Beef and broccoli was very good, and served with steamed rice. The coconut cake was not to my liking, it is a steamed or something cake, and the texture was not good, I could not eat them at all. I routinely eat out at Hong Kong Express and find the food to be good to very good with reasonable prices. I have to agree with most of the other reviews written and agree that the service is quirky but friendly. On the cleanliness of the restaurant there is some room to be desired, but I would not use words like gross. I have tried many of the dishes and the only one I was disappointed in was the chow mein. I can recommend the broccoli with garlic sauce and the egg fu young. It is hard to give this restaurant a proper rating as it is the best Chinese food is Spokane, but that is not saying very much. I give it a B minus based upon California Bay Area standards, but for Spokane I have to give them an A minus. read more

4 stars because I could taste and sense Flavorful home cooking from the buffet. The kim chee is the best I can remember (even better than Haha's). Good and quirky service. A little girl who was related to someone at the restaraunt spent a decent amount of time at our table. It was kind of fun. This is my favorite Chinese place in Spokane. Their food is all so good! Delivery is VERY fast, Portions are huge. . Our favorite menu items are the peanut chicken, the teriyaki chicken, the Singapore chow mei few, and the chicken and broccoli but really, everything we've tried here has been delicious. I've had Chinese food in China Town In Boston, San Francisco, and Honolulu, and, while not all of the food at Hong Kong Express is as authentic as you'll get at China Town, their Dim Sum is. The one problem we've encountered is that if you go in to get the buffet, especially the buffet to go, it is pretty common for them to run out of items, especially the teriyaki chicken, peanut chicken, and the broccoli chicken. read more

Hong Kong Express is my absolute FAVORITE Chinese restaurant. Their lo mein is delicious with roasted pork being my fav. The lo mein has tons of meat and lots of cabbage, finely shredded carrots and Bok Choy. The sauce is yummy too, which I think is hard to find. Also, they have a lot of "crispy" meat in their dishes, like the sesame beef. So good! The manager, Leo, is amazing! He knows my voice and puts in the order as soon as I call. This is my first time ordering from Hong Kong express I ordered the po-po platter and to sodas so with tax and tip and everything it came to under $22 I could easily seat eating for people on this platter Since it was just me I'm going to have lunch and dinner for many days to come I have so much left over and everything was excellent and I haven't even eaten all of the different foods to come in this platter and so I'm anxiously awaiting tomorrow to delve into some of the things that I didn't touch tonight This is the most fantastic deal I've had in a long time I highly recommend it give it a try I'm sure it won't disappoint read more
