It had a been a few years since we had visited Hong Kong restaurant and we won't be waiting long again! We each had a combination plate and both were delicious! We dined here this evening as our hotel was across the street and we had just arrived in town tired after a long drive. However, we were apprehensive after reading some of the negative reviews.. fortunately, we ignored the naysayers and discovered this absolutely magnificent gem of unique Chinese cuisine. My husband brought me Won Ton soup because I've been sick. This was the WORST Chinese food I have ever eaten. The won ton were gummy and were probably frozen. The center was not fresh but hard! The vegetables were way overcooked! Who puts mushy broccoli in won ton soup? There were a couple of thick slices of really dry pork. Dry pork in soup? How did they manage that I wonder. At best, on a good day this place is just ok. I ordered the scallop dinner. They charge almost 20 bucks for 6 little scallops, a table spoon of peas and a baked potato that was bite sized. I asked the waitress if she was joking when she set the plate down in front of me. She was shocked. She asked me what was wrong and I asked her if she saw a problem. She said no. So I told her. She came back and said the "chef" was making me more scallops. Being afraid of them doing something to my food I declined. After looking at the very extensive menu (honestly no menu should be that big, you can not make that many different things and have them all be good) we ordered. 40 minutes, yes 40, our food came out. I had a sweet and sour chicken combination. It came with a bagged salad mix that was DRENCHED in dressing. The chow Mein was very soggy, the rice was fine and my chicken was cold. My husband ordered kung pao chicken and it looked like a soup. He had to search for chicken but there was not a lack of cashews. We will not be back here, have no reason to ever eat there again. I love this place. Been coming here for most of my life. Even though I don't live here anymore, it's still a family favorite. It's what the family chose tonight. The atmosphere is kinda tacky; a little Chinese, a little "what ever American holiday is upon us." There were green shamrocks hanging on the walls tonight. Our party of four ordered the Family Special; an appetizer consisting of a huge pile of Mar far chicken and bbq pork. Dab on the hot mustard and sesame seeds and yum! Next came pork fried rice, almond chicken sub gum, sweet and sour pork and fried shrimp. Desert was the traditional scoop of ice cream and a fortune cookie. This is Chinese food for people who've never had Chinese food before. And while it is in fact an Americanized Chinese restaurant, that's no excuse for the lack of flavor they're serving. I personally prefer Americanized Chinese over authentic, but this is hands down the worst Chinese restaurant I've ever been to. Just look at the photos. All of the food is some sort of brown or gray color, sort of what you'd expect if you've had anything from a can of La Choy. The atmosphere is dated, the tables are uncomfortably high, and the expensive menu is disappointing. We spent just around $60 for 3 people, and I couldn't bare giving my leftovers to my dog. In fact, my wife and I ate so little, we went to Taco Bell after because we were starving. Seriously, skip this place. Go to Asian Express instead. Hong Kong gives Chinese restaurants a bad name, and is part of the reason why people say they don't like Chinese food. read more

I used to go to Hong Kong every other week and on special occasions when I was younger, but the first experience my husband and I had after it closed down and reopened with a new owner was so sad. Yes, it was a decently busy Christmas Eve 2023 when we went BUT by the time we left it was slow and most people let. The deal that made us decide to write this review is because my husband got the worst food poisoning he has ever experienced. The only food different he got from myself and my son(who didn't feel great after, but not as terrible) was the fried shrimp. He said it was smooshy/soggy, and only had a few pieces before he decided to not eat any more. Thank goodness he did not eat anymore because after a couple days later, he is still struggling. Decided to give it another go and order other dishes for take out tonight. I called and they answered right away, but asked me to hold a minute. After five minutes and listening to staff conversations (the receiver was clearly set down and I was not put on hold), and after 10 minutes began saying "hello?" into the receiver. You're need to take a little road trip down to SF to satisfy that craving. It's like a 6-hour drive or a 45-minute flight. You can totally do it! Now that we've got that out of the way, on to the review. This is wholly, unabashedly Americanized Chinese food. Emphasis on the American. As long as you go in knowing this, you will have a good time. There is nothing inherently wrong with greasy-crunchy-yummy-not-so-spicy fried rice, or thoroughly fried Mar Far chicken with magic "pink sauce" (the secret ingredient is mayonnaise, shhh!), or piles upon piles of greasy egg rolls (the more grease the better, people! roll in it!) and pillowy crab puffs. Come here when you aren't counting your calories, expecting gourmet flair or looking for authentic chicken's-feet entrees. Come here with your GP-native grandparents or your conservative boss who thinks she's being edgy by trying Chinese food. Whatever you do, though, if you come here expecting anything but greasy down-home Americanized cooking, you're gonna have a bad time. Best Chinese food IN THE WORLD, Vegas style! The Hong Kong is right in the center of Grants Pass' China Town, across the street from what is only known as "the doorway". There is no place to review the doorway here on Yelp, an' it's not like it's a legit casino or nothin, but I would review it if I could. Basically go there if you want to get ripped off or possibly Shanghighed. Literally. The doorway has the worst odds I've seen outside of Wendover. It's an awful awful place. Tell 'em Willy sent ya. Forget the doorway. This is about Paul's Hong Kong. I appreciate Paul's more than most people might, as I am privy to a little known fact: the very motif of the Kowloon Room was the inspiration to one of the stages of the original Mortal Kombat! I like to believe that Tobias and Boon spent many a late night drinking oolong as they feverishly hammered out their legacies at one of those charming worn out booths from ancient China. I feel real dumb about this now. I mean dumber than normal. I really should have known better, but as I passed the kitchen I swore I heard the cooks singing an old Chinese poisoning song. Poison, poison, it has no taste! Put it in the rice and they put it in their face! It was a song my mother-in-law sang, and we knew very well that when she sang it, we would not be eating her baked sweet cheese lobster and slimy swamp casserole. I wasn't going to take any chances being poisoned or seeing others get poisoned and gettin' blamed for it, so I wised up and pulled the fire alarm. I ran as fast as I could. I did a tuck-and-roll Scorpion would have been proud of after slamming through the door. I watched from the bushes, surprised as NO ONE made their way outside! Perhaps the patrons knew better. That Paul and co. were not capable of murder. Not even the worthless scum present that evening! As I sat there watching the door I realized my fear of death and my fear of hunger were intertwined, and when it came down to it, they were actually one in the same. So I did the sensible thing and went back in there to do what I do best: scarf. I spent precious minutes in those bushes not eating, and I had to make it up to myself, even if it cost me my life. Besides, it wouldn't have been the first time I died of food poisoning. I figured if this meal killed me, at least I wouldn't be hungry in the next world. I further rationalized as I crossed the parking lot, that I could have screwed up the lyrics to the song in my feeble brains, and then there's the fact that my mother-in-law's Cantonese wasn't the best. As I rejoined my family, happy to see they were not all dead, I began shoveling giant shrimps and handfuls of chow mein from my mother's and brothers' plates into my gizzards in a mad scuttle to catch up. There was a bit of elbowing, punching and wrestling. I got to punch my Aunt Barbara between the eyes twice, but in the end everyone would be sated. As always, everyone was pleased with the marfar chicken, that gooey gooey sweet n' sour pork and shrimp fried rice. Here's a tip, always take fried rice home, even if there's only a little bit. It feels great between the toes after a long day of watching TV! The great food would not be the only highlight of the evening. We were met with the greatest of treats. The staff let us play full contact Mortal Kombat in the Kowloon Room after dinner. Paul Chang HIMSELF announced the rounds, exclaiming EXCELLENT and WELL DONE when appropriate. There's too much to say, but I'll start bullet pointing here: 1. They put those dry fried noodle sticks in the vegetables. 2. They don't know how to cook meat, so they just deep fry everything: chicken, shrimp, even the fish in the sea food platter, with the same simple carb batter. 3. The salad comes with freaking dry pork slices. 4. The vegetables in every dish comes from those packages you find in the frozen section. 5. The "sweet and sour chicken" comes with this fake, sickly sweet cherry sauce, the same kind you find in a cherry sundae. 6. They give you crackers in the beginning, not even dinner rolls. Wtf are we suppose to do with crackers? 7. Even the freaking fortune cookies they give at the end tastes weirdly coconutty.
