Woke up at 3am in Chicago to catch a flight to Seattle...so really I got up at 1am local time. Wasn't able to nap at all since we had our toddler who was bouncing all over. After landing, we had a long drive to the northern burbs so I wanted to eat something on the way up, and thankfully Hood Famous was on the way. I actually met one of the owners 20 years ago, and was excited to checkout this staple of the local Filipino community. I will say it's not really a family restaurant vibe but more of a cafe with food - wish they had a high chair for my overtired baby, but thankfully my parents were with us to help corral him. I learned their menu rotates, but on this trip my family shared: Chicken arroz caldo - wow, the garlic and calamansi came through strong on this one. Perfect for a cool autumn day. Also came with some nice pieces of fried chicken skin to give some contrast Tocino pan de sal sando - a surprisingly large sandwich that hit the sweet and salty conmbination well Smoked salmon on mochi waffle with calamansi cream cheese - I mean, look at that combination of words. It was creamy and cool and the perfect first meal for our PNW trip Iced ube latte - I had just had one of these at Kasama, and this one was similarly great. I was in the neighborhood and my kids wanted a drink, so they suggested to try Hood Famous. Both of my kids said their drinks were really good! I decided to try a bite and ordered the Rice Porridge (Chicken Arroz Caldo). It was tasty, the only bad part was the soft boil egg. It was a cold hard boil "commercial grade" egg, the ones that you can buy in buckets. Anyway, it took away the whole experience. We bought a few cheesecake here to try with a group of people and as you can see, i was too slow in taking pictures hahaha. We also got a pan de sal to try as well. The pan de sal (1.25) - this was ok, I thought it would have had more Flavor but it was fine. It dried out pretty quickly as well as we had half of it when we left the store and the other half later on and that one dried up. The cheesecake was pretty good. I definitely like the Vietnamese coffee one but they were all really good. Can't believe I have not completed a Yelp post since my first onsite visit back on 3/10/19. Where I sat originally, now has a refrigerated case. Hopefully they will have the opportunity to expand their retail - restaurant - cafe - bar space. I have also visited the currently shuttered Ballard site to sample the various items to share with family, like the mini and full size cheesecakes, cookies, and calamansi bars. Product used to be also available at Uwajimaya or Asian markets in North Seattle. Due to parking and/or long lines, my other visits were pretty much reduced to takeouts and became more and more infrequent. However, Wendy K, Yelp Elite and IG friend, put Hood's Famous Bakeshop and Bar back on my radar screen with her posts of various beverages and baked goods. She even gifted me with several large ube cookies. She's very lucky to work nearby and have the ability to stop in often. I had stopped in on 10/23/21 ordered a tasty mocha and a selection of baked goods to go. Their pastry case assortment was so enticing. Another recent spontaneous visit on 11/4/21, I patiently made my way southbound during the rainy, morning commute. Found nearby parking, yay! Purchasing a rare periodical second printing compelled me to visit. I was able to actually sit onsite for 45 minutes with another mocha and just absorb the cafe's current vibe. Their shop has a nice assortment of merch - great idea for holiday shopping! It's a tiny shop but big on providing a welcoming atmosphere. It was very serene and pleasant being able to be seated and just be. I was able to bring home a sample of buko pie for The Homie. It was an unusual way to start my day which put me in an upbeat mood. Good thing since later that business day, I found out my contract was not renewed. Becoming unemployed again before the holidays reinforced counting one's blessings nevertheless. I stopped in again on 11/24/21 to pick up my online order for buko pie. Nicely packaged with baking instructions provided. This was very well received the next day at the family Thanksgiving gathering across the sound. Baked with love, infused with community and Filipino heritage, this was very meaningful. I came here by recommendation of a friend and absolutely loved it. They have a sign in the door which asks you to wear a mask. Unfortunately I didn't have one on me and the staff were kind to provide one to me after I ordered. There's tons of seating inside and I like how they have separate areas for ordering and pickup. I ordered the ube latte and the ube cookie. Both were amazing. One issue I had with the ube latte is that I couldn't taste the ube until I mixed the drink since all the ube was at the bottom. It was a bit difficult to do since the top was open. If you get this drink, I recommend taking a straw and mixing it before you drink it so that you get the full flavor. Read previous review for regular food/drinks --Bar review-- I came back, almost a year later, to see they have now expanded (they bought the space next door) to provide additional seating! They also have a decently sized cocktails and alcohol menu now, and I personally ordered the calamansi sour. The calamansi sour is very delicious and sufficiently sour, with a thin layer of egg whites for the texture. It's always great to have Asian ingredients infused cocktails, as they can be hard to find in a traditional bar setting. I also tried a friend's ube daiquiri which has a very strong ube flavor and not that much alcohol, though that drink is very watered down (hence the daiquiri is large in quantity of liquid). Overall, they have pretty solid drinks and from what I can tell, very varying qualities depending on the bartender making the drinks. read more

Cute little Filipino bakery/drink store located near Chinatown. They have quite a large selection of different things to try such as cheesecakes, cookies, as well as the drinks. We wanted to get some Coco Jam cookies but they were sold out/didn't have any which was surprising since we within the first two hours if opening. We ordered the Iced Ube Latte and Iced Pandan Latte. The Pandan flavor was much more subtle in comparison to the Ube Latte which had a more pronounced Ube flavor comparatively. The vibrant purple drew us to the shop in the first place and for good reason. I think this is how I developed my love for ube and ube flavored things. A few years ago, I visited the Hood Famous location in Ballard and tried out various flavors of their cheesecakes. The ube one was the most popular. Finally, visited the location in Chinatown/International District and got to try even more ube items! We ordered, an iced ube latte, hot ube latte, ube cookies, mini ube cheesecake, and a sticky bun (don't remember what flavor it was). Super pleased and happy with all the items we got! We barely got there in time before they were going to close to prepare for their evening switch, but we got there with minutes to spare! We sat outside and as they were closing the doors to make the switch, one of the staff members kindly told us ahead of time about it and that if needed to come inside to knock on the door to be let back in. Listen, the hype is real!!! Came here twice in one weekend while visiting Seattle and I can't wait for my next visit! This Filipino American cafe is such a hip vibe and would be perfect for just a chill productive session or hangout with friends. Hood Famous holds a special place in my heart. I used to come here all the time with my mother. Purple was her favorite color so when she discovered their ube cheesecake and lattes, she was beyond ecstatic. I no long live near enough to visit as much as I'd like but every time I'm in downtown Seattle I make it one of my priority stops. My most recent visit was no different than all the fantastic times I've dropped by and picked up a delicious treat. To my dismay, I had arrived too late for ube cheesecake, however they did have Pandan ($8.00), my second favorite. Hood is famous for the pretty purple pastry, however the Pandan is a close runner-up. The flavoring is just right. You can definitely taste Pandan but it's not overwhelming. The cake itself is super rich. The serving size is rather small, but it'll take you a couple occasions to finish it to not upset your stomach. The creamy, smooth confection envelopes your tastebuds in a heavenly experience. Truly amazing, delicious, you cannot pass this one up. Another Hood staple is their gorgeous Ube Latte ($5.75). I like mine iced so I can admire it's beauty. Even on a cold day, it hits the spot. Don't be a wuss, get it with whole milk or else it's not worth it (unless you really can't do dairy, I'm so sorry). It's hard to compare this because the taste is very unique. It wouldn't be fair to say it tastes like something else, it's really got it's own flavor you just have to try to understand. If you like your coffee strong just ask for an extra shot because it's definitely on the lighter side. One other item you have to grab are their Ube Cookies ($14.00 for a pack of 6). These will remind you of super soft and fluffy sugar cookies but better. Rich in flavor and texture, they have a longer shelf life compared to the cheesecake and other treats, so this is a great items for tourists who want to bring a little bit of Hood home. read more

Before flying back home I wanted a quick bite somewhere in the C-ID. Hood Famous stood out, and I now know why. First off the vibe, definitely a place you could find in LA's Silver Lake area or nearby HiFi. But why Silver Lake first? Because of the vibe, the crowd and energy. Music and people filled the inside, not to mention good food. We got the chicken arroz caldo, beef mechado pot pie and an ube cookie. The porridge was comfort food at its best. The beef mechado pot pie brought me back to childhood family parties, but the buttery crust was a welcome substitute to steamed rice. Ube cookie had a great chewy center too.
