Just had dinner here on Friday night. The whole experience was so frustrating due to poor service and poorly trained staff. I ordered the rib eye steak, asked for it to be cooked medium. My friend got a seafood boil. Our food came out in less than 10 minutes, which was surprisingly fast. I cut into my steak right away to check the temp, it was extremely rare. Cut into a different part of steak just to make sure, also rare. When I showed our server she agreed it was rare and took it back to the kitchen. She comes back after talking to the kitchen and tells me the cook said its not rare, its just the marinade that makes it look dark. I'm like, "huh?" Cause that made no sense to me. Still they cooked the same steak another 5-7 minutes before bringing it back. Now it was a perfect medium. It was obvious they just threw the same steak back on the grill, the 2 cuts i made were still visible. All was good till our server came back to check on us, she asked how the steak came out, when I said it was perfect, she continues to insist it was medium well when I sent it back based on what the kitchen told her, several times she made excuses and would not once admit or own up to the mistake despite me showing her the cut piece of steak on my plate. Had a better experience this time than the last time I came here. Happy hour from 3-6pm and there's a ton of items to choose from. On Wednesdays they also have BOGO on the lbs of shrimp and crawfish that we ordered. So it was 2 lbs of shrimp for the price of 1! Which was already a steal. Ordered the medium hook and reel special sauce, wasn't bad but I wasn't super impressed with it. Shrimp was cooked perfectly, and crawfish were fresh but personally wouldn't get again. The food was decent, but it was very annoyed when I ordered fried oysters and it took over 45 minutes to get it. My wife ordered 2lbs of crawfish and 1/2lb of clams and she was already done and I still didn't get my food. We went there around 3 o'clock, and it was pretty empty. A couple of things made the overall experience hit-or-miss for me. First, the positives--the flavors and seasoning here are honestly really good. The sauces were bold, garlicky, and packed with Cajun flavor, and the oysters were a highlight for me. Super fresh tasting and easily my favorite part of the meal. Where things fell short was the crawfish. We were told it was live crawfish, but it tasted more like it had been frozen for a while -- the texture was pretty rubbery, and it just didn't feel fresh. It was disappointing because the seasoning itself was great, but the quality of the seafood didn't match. The biggest issue though, was finding a fly in our garlic noodles. After that, we were honestly done eating, which put a damper on the whole experience. Hook & Reel has officially been added to our seafood boil rotations in the Sacramento area. We've had the chance to check out Hook N Reel two times with our second time being this past weekend. The first time around we went and it wasn't too busy so our food came out faster than expected but this past weekend it was busy and it took a little longer. So definitely plan ahead for those weekend crowds if coming in with a huge party. The service is also pretty good for the most part and everyone is pretty helpful with everything. The restaurant has plenty of seating and also a full bar available. They have plenty of TVs available throughout the restaurant with a huge screen next to the bar. Might check them out during NFL season to catch some games on the BIG screen. One thing I could suggest is lowering the music volume in the restaurant. It gets pretty loud as is with the crowds and with the music you just can't seem to be able to talk to the people in your group. They have a variety of different flavors available to choose from but we have gone with the blended flavor both times and it's been really good. One thing I wish I knew ,was to ask for the noodles on the side for our boil. That was our mistake for not asking if they came inside or out, so that's good to know for future reference.
