The food here is always good and the service is friendly. I haven't had anything that reeeeeally blew my mind, hence the just three stars, but no complaints either. The food seems to be prepared fresh by cooks who know what they're doing. The portions are large and the price is right, too! My one complaint is that whenever I go there they seem to be out of the exotic burgers that I've heard so much about (ostrich, alligator, unicorn) and I feel this is the one thing that would make this place stand out....if I ever had a chance to try them. I was only at this place once and it was one of the best I've ever had. No wonder it won the best bar food. I didn't even know there was upstairs seating, all bars should have that. i was here on a Thursday night and it was too loud downstairs, so I went upstairs to eat. ordered a butterbuger and chocolate shake, the burger was great, what made it so good was the toasted bun and chocolate shake was as any that I've had, which I was pleasantly surprised. tif you don't mind paying more for a meal, this is a great place to go. read more

The good: Everything on the food menu is awesome. The Blackjack Barbecue Chicken is one of the best things I've ever eaten even though it is long gone. Also, Sidoff no longer runs the place. The bad: Get up for three minutes to pee, come back, and someone's sitting in your seat. However, this happens everywhere these days. The ugly: I had to drop a friend off at the airport, and as I picked her up at 5am, noticed the place was going to be open at 6am for some soccer game. Nobody gives a crap about soccer unless you're from South America or have roots to there. Once the US lost, everyone bailed immediately. I still had a drink in front of me. Sidoff not only took my beer, but all my money on the bar. I asked for it back, "No it's my tip." I never went back, but am grateful that Mark is running the place now. read more

I have visited Houlie's many times over the years and one thing that has remained the same is their consistency. Great for lunch or a casual dinner and won't break the bank. Also an excellet spot to catch a game on tv or to play trivia. Staff has always been well trained and attentive. Very good beer selection. My menu favorites are the Santa Fe Shrimp Wrap or the Ostrich Burger. The latter is one of the best non-hamburger burgers in town. No doubt. Their soups are pretty good in the winter. And in the summer, their outdoor seating is probably one of the most happenin spots on the East Side. I hear they recently added an economic crunch menu. I plan on checking it out. I believe all items on that menu are under $7. For a friendly atmosphere with some of the best bartenders in town, Hooligans won't disappoint. read more

I went for a fish fry tonight with my friend. They gave us four fish sticks a piece covered with a lot of batter. The french fries were hard and dry. All for $10.00. The fish here used to be better. This place is awesome because it has The Boot! You can also get many different beers in your boot as well. It can be pricey but come on who doesn't want to partake in having one! My boot of choice is Guiness!There are also plenty of craft beer choices on tap which is a plus. You can sit outside on nice days and enjoy the weather or just people watch. The upstairs portion is pretty cool, not to big on the downstairs. Besides some prices being a little high I think this is a fun place to go once in a while. Never had the food though so I can't comment on that. I would recommend to friends as long as they try The Boot! That's the clincher! read more

This place has amazing food, but unfortunately their customer service is horrendous. Went here on Sunday to grab a bite to eat, but was turned away due to there not being enough people in our party. The only tables that were open were ones reserved for 5 people or more and there were 3 empty ones with no one in line. Apparently they'd rather wait and hope 5 people collectively decide to go to boring north avenue to sit at their restaurant than service a smaller party that was standing right in front of them. I've purposely been holding off on writing a review on Hooligans, mainly because I feel my experiences there are so inconsistent. I live on the east side about two blocks away, so hooligans is often an easy go-to option when I'm looking for a casual sit down type of place. Everything about this place seems inconsistent to me. I've had awesome service and also service that was quite inattentive. Lately I've been noticing that the staff really seems to want to get you out of there as fast as they can. Normally I would understand this if there are people waiting and such. But when there is barely anyone even on the second floor why do they feel the need to push us out? The food is mostly pretty good. I like their burgers and some of the plate specials I've had have been very tasty. I most recently had their "traditional Mac and cheese" which on the menu is made to sound really good, but in reality the taste was so bland I felt like I was eating left over Kraft macaroni and cheese. They have a pretty expansive drink menu. I'd recommend sticking to beer or very simple easy to make mixed drinks. The drinks have average prices. Not a bad place, but I wouldn't drive far out of my way to eat here. Love the patio area out front during the summer months! read more

Hooligans is seriously one of my favorite places. They have so many great choices and a pretty extensive menu: burgers, loaded tots, blue cheese potato salad, chicken tortilla salad, 3 cheese BLT and the caprese melt. Oh man. And their bloodys are nothing fancy but really good and relatively cheap. They are never crazy busy like all the other "trendy" East Side places so you never have to wait or fight a crowd. I am giving Hooligans only 1 star for a number of recent occurrences. When it was owned by John, I would have given it 4 or maybe even 5 stars. For the past year or so, the service from the bartenders and servers(most of all) has plummeted. I speak about the servers plummeting the most because we will almost always sit at a table. The past ten times I have been served at Hooligans, the servers ID me(which is fine, I get it), but there is always an attitude that goes along with it. When I go to a restaurant, I o to enjoy myself. This means having a drink or two and engaging in conversation with whomever I am with. This is hard to do at Hooligans now because the servers are constantly trying to flip tables. The last time I was there, our server asked us three times in three minutes if we were ready to order. The restaurant was not busy and our menus were not even open. After getting asked another couples times within 5 more minutes, we ordered in a rush to pretty much get this girl off our backs. After this, my mother asked for a water when she brought out our food because we had never received any. The server did not verbally acknowledge the request. Instead, she rolled her eyes, turned around, and bolted to the bar. She came back with the water, clunked it on the table, turned around, and bolted away. The whole time, she was aggressive, dismissive, and just someone that should not be working in the service industry. I understand that everyone has other things going on in their personal lives, but that is when you suck it the fuck up and put on your fake smile just like everyone else that is having a shitty day but do not show it. This is just one example of a server I have had here give terrible service. I still tipped her the bare minimum of 18%, but I only did so out of respect for John(the amazing founder of this establishment). I have been in the service industry since I could legally work, so I'm not writing this as some shmuck that doesn't know his thumb from his ass. I think that ever since John sold it to the GM(or whoever it was that worked there), it has lost most of its structure and class when it comes to good service. It feels like I am more of a burden to the servers that anything. On a different note, the food still rules, and that is the only reason I will continue to go there. My hat is off to the cooks that continue to kick major ass. The servers(most of them at least), however, need major attitude adjustments. read more

We sat outside and waited a little over an hour to get our food, our waitress was terrible as we sat and watched many people that came after us get served before us. It wasn't even that packed. Wow, amazing! We were here last Saturday night for the NCAA tourney. The place was packed, but they did an amazing job of keeping up with their customers. Our bartender and waitress were top-notch, always on hand to take care of us. The food was good, the drinks were cold and there were plenty of TV's to watch the games. This used to be one of my absolute favorites, good atmosphere, good wait staff, bang for you buck. Although I've noticed that the wait staff isn't particularly friendly any more and always seem to be wanting to rush you through lunch or dinner. The food has gotten worse over time as well, often cold, it's not very appetizing. The prices have gone up a bit well at the same the portions have shrunk astronomically. I used to not be able to finish my meal to save my life and now am wondering why I paid $15 for a burger and beer to still be hungry. Try Hooligan's at your own risk. read more

Went here. Ordered a beer out of a boot-shaped glass. My waitress never mentioned that there is a $35 deposit for the glass. The glass broke and they charged me an extra $35. In all honesty the policy makes sense, but is completely unethical to enforce this policy if it is never explained to the customer when the boot is ordered. Also, when I complained about never being told about the deposit, all I got was a terrible attitude from the waitress as well as the manager. read more

Hello sports fans! Ive been a patron of Hooligans throughout the past football season due to the fact that they were giving away a large flat screen television which people had to register for during Monday night football. Simple enough I figured. Show up to Hooligans and eat and drink every Monday with a chance to win this great television. Half way through the season I finally am picked as a weekly winner for the drawing after the season is completed. Bar keep has my name, phone number and email on weekly entry form and assures me I will be contacted for the final drawing which one has to be present for to win. Again, simple enough I figure. Super Bowl comes and goes and Im not contacted as promised. Turns out the television was given away and I wasnt given the opportunity to win as promised. After spending hundreds of dollars on $11 burger patties and $8 micros during the season, Im not even given the chance to win after winning weekly drawing. It appears that Hooligans picks and chooses who they want to win prizes. Duped and scammed seems appropriate and Im left wondering why I didnt give my business to the other east side bars whose prices are half of Hooligans for the same beer and frozen burgers. read more
